  • Part 23 of 33 of a road trip from Brisbane to Tasmania, returning via Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Central Victoria, Great Alpine Road and Canberra.
With only three days to go before we departed from Tasmania, we used this day to travel into the Esk Valley to view more historic towns and National Trust Estates. We drove past the Launceston Airport to the charming town of Evandale where annually enthusiasts hold penny farthing bike races. This is another town where most of the houses date back to convict times. The bakery, itself in a convict built building, had excellent vanilla slices to go with their coffee.
Clarendon, Brickendon and Woolmers Estate are not far from the town and are worth a visit. There are entry fees for all of these properties with proceeds helping with their upkeep. Between them they present a comprehensive picture of colonial life at the time and the quality of convict construction, particularly stone masonry.
Finally, to Cataract Gorge Reserve for a visit and lunch in their excellent café. Cataract Gorge is on the South Esk River a few hundred meters before it meets the North Esk River at the headwaters of the Tamar River at the sight of the original Launceston port. The gorge boasts a large swimming pool, cascades and river pools, a suspension bridge, a small dam and a chair lift that carries passengers over it all.
