A pro like him is not dumb enough to confront a supe without knowing their strengths and weaknesses, so he knew that Starlight was bulletproof. On that note he would also know that a particularly powerful gun (like a high-powered sniper rifle) would at least knock the wind out of her.
Hmm, maybe. I can also see him not being aware whether or not Starlight was actually bulletproof. You gotta remember that "a pro like him" is no longer in the CIA, where he would have had the access to all the information. But he naturally still has some connections. In any case, I don't see him actually caring about Annie surviving his shots.
She was going to arrest Hughie and eventually get him killed because that's what Vought do so the only way to take down Starlight was to shoot her so Butcher was in the right to do that.
What yallre talking about is the difference between empathy and sympathy. Empathy is "damn bro, i feel the same depression sucks" Sympathy is "shit, man, depression sounds like it sucks im sorry you're going through that"
I can empathize with Homelander without needing to grow up like him. I know what it is to grow up in total social isolation, though. All I can explain is that you develop a type of "independence" that is very, very distinct... I will try my best to think of a way to explain, forgive me if I fail. The way you feel alone in your own mind. Take that for example. Most humans feel "alone" in their own mind, I imagine. You can be sitting right next to someone and feel alone because you are inside your head and they are in the "outside world"/not in your head with you. Just take that feeling and amplify it. Interacting with other humans doesn't feel extra unnatural or anything, but it does feel similar to interacting with animals in a way. They are foreign to you and whatever is going on inside their mind is indecipherable. The "otherness" of others is just more amplified. Very similar to the Harlow monkey experiment, when you are suddenly thrust into "society" or being around your peers you might as well have been dropped into a proverbial lion's den. That may sound sociopathic to liken other people to animals, but maybe that is the key. Some isolated people see others like animals, and some of us feel like *we* are the animal among "society".

You imagine if you went through the Vietnam War as a soldier and the horrors that happened to Kreese, happened to you instead. You feel the emotional impact upon yourself as if you walked in his shoes. Shorter example?: Empathy: A woman understanding the pain another woman would feel giving birth. Because they have the same "parts" below. Sympathy: Being a man and knowing you could never actually truly comprehend what giving birth is like, because you dont have the right "parts" below. You just KNOW it's painful Even if you are someone who can EMPATHIZE with people. There are some things that are just too hard to comprehend, that you can't imagine yourself in those experiences. Perhaps you may also believe that you personally can not Empathize with that situation or person because of that. So you can only Sympathize with them.... Sometimes an individual may commit acts that wont allow you brain to 'attempt' to empathize. (Like Hitler, KKK, Nazis, etc.) OR... I am Completely wrong... I'm drunk af...
I mostly agree but think your empathy examples could use some modifying slightly. The second especially I'm not sure works. There are plenty of women who can't empathize with other women's childbirth experiences and are dismissive of their struggles. And there are men who can empathize with women's childbirth experiences. You don't need to be able to go through something to empathize with it. More than anything you just need imagination and the desire to do it. Similar experiences and characteristics can help, but they're not required by any means.

That "fatherless/motherless behaviour" take was really thoughtless and just seems like an excuse to not have to think about that whole problem too much. ("People behave in ways I don't like so I'm just going to pretend it's because they don't have two parents") Having two parents won't help anything if they're bad parents. And having one parent is better than having two that are fighting and making life a hell to live in. Better scenario would be to still have contact with both parents after their seperation. (If they're good parents that should be involved in raising the child that is).
