I think it's interesting that Figo is still disliked, if not outright hated in Barcelona, while another great that made that fobidden jump, Michael Laudrup, is still loved in Barcelona. And being revered in both Madrid and Barcelona, having been named one of the all time foreign greats in Spain in the early '00's.
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories I think it's partially also because of Michael Laudrup's reputation as a diplomat. Always humble and never bad mouthing others. Also it might've helped he explained that him leaving was due to a breakdown in the relation with Johan Cruyff and not him not loving the club.
@@WutangToft I agree. I think he was somewhat admired for his “my way or the highway” mentality as well. In a world where footballers became media stars and increasingly looked like pawns in a bigger chess game, Laudrup outright refused to entertain any idea that he didn’t like, and he’s ready to quit for his belief. A stubborn yet superbly gifted player will earn the love of many, unlike those who failed to produce. People probably felt that more blame lies on Cruyff’s shoulders, especially after the disastrous Champions League Final.
In Figo's transfer documentary on Netflix, it was very clear that Barcelona's president became too confort and lenient towards their star player, the president thought Figo would never leave and didn't want to raise his salary. While Florentino Perez said to Figo "I don't want all of this money, I want you!". So I truly think that Figo leaved Barcelona not only for the money, but because Real Madrid's president believed and valued him while Barcelona's took it for granted.
A few things I would like to add is despote Lorenzo Sans' UCL's, Real Madrid was still in big financial problems that Perez revealed after he won the elections. To make an idea of how bad it was, Madrid needed to sell their training grounds to be able to clear the club of their debt. At that time, If a player decided to not move to the club, the father club had to pay half of the release clause to the buying club. In retrospect, if the deal fell through, Perez was paying the Real Madrid socies with BARCELONA'S money, an idea wich the president Gaspar couldn't entertain. Amazing documentary with beatiful editing! Such a shame You aren't a bigger channel
You're absolutely right da_stoof, the way the whole thing was engineered by Perez was brilliant and Gaspar could never pay Madrid just to keep their own player. Thanks for your comment mate I;m really grateful. Hopefully the channel will grow bigger as I have a lot more stories I want to put out. All the best mate
You make some crazy in depth documentaries and deserve a far bigger sub count. Everyone should share this video to get the ball rolling. The Calciopoli film was a masterpiece. Tbf to Perez he’s made good on his promises with the club dominating La Liga and Europe on a far too regular basis.

Mate, what an awesome video on what I consider to be the most controversial transfer of all time! I’ve seen copious amounts of documentaries on this transfer but this one is head and shoulders above the rest! Keep up the great work mate, looking forward to the next one. I can appreciate that these videos must take an enormous amount of time to create but is there any chance you could do a documentary on Hillsborough?
Thank you so much man. Yeah they do take a while but I really enjoy doing them and it’s really rewarding when people say they enjoy them. Yeah I can definitely do one on Hillsborough, that’s a great idea. Thanks for the support mate, all the best
Yeah I think that’s fair. I understand why the fans were so hurt but at the same time Figo wasn’t being unreasonable in looking for a pay rise to match his status as a world-class player. Like a lot of things in life it’s not a black and white situation. Thanks for watching and commenting mate. All the best
Barcelona cheated there way to every trophy by being doped out of there minds especially when Ped I mean Pep was managing them! Robbed Manchester United of two champions Leagues or maybe more back in the stockov and romario days😢

That predicament Perez engineered for Barcelona is absolutely incredible if true. Either Real Madrid get Barcelona’s best player, or Barcelona have to pay for Madrid fans memberships for a year to the tune of £19 million, absolutely vile stuff. I’d love to hear exactly how he convinced Figo to sign that deal.
I agree Harvey I thought it was really intelligent and crafty. As to why Figo signed it, there are different stories. Some say his agent signed it on his behalf without telling him. Others say Figo signed it because his agent was in serious financial troubles and the money he would make would help clear his debts. Who knows. Thanks for watching and commenting, all the best
Thank you BadBlood I really appreciate that mate. Yes absolutely you can make suggestions, I was joping people would. I will definitely add the FIFA scandal to the list and I'll give you a shout out at the start of the video for recommending it. All the best mate
@DanRenoyasFootballStories I saw from reading your comments that you are a northern lad. I am also Sir, what area? I am NW in a town called Blackburn. I no longer live there, so I am content to state the town. A general area will do 😉
Thats 3 of your videos ive seen now. One to go it seems. All have been good to watch. Not much time for madrid but the barcelona fans went way too far with their treatment of figo
Mo Johnston to Rangers. He agreed to sign for Celtic (having previously been a hero in the Celtic colours before a move to France), posed with the manager and the strip, then later accepted an offer for more money from Rangers. Humiliating for Celtic.

Thank you so much for the suggestions I was hoping someone would suggest videos they’d like me to do. I’ve got two I’m working on at the moment but I’ll definitely do one of these in the future. All the best mate
This transfer ain't how you suggest the single most controversial transfer in football history. Sol Campbell from Tottenham to Arsenal and Ashley Cole from Arsenal to Chelsea are two transfers just as controversial. also Franco forcing the transfer of Alfredo Di Stéfano from Barcelona to Real Madrid is much more controversial
I used to like Barca but they do seem to enjoy playing the victim card- Di Stefano figo and messi. They had a point with De Stefano but Figo did all he could to stay; it was the board who showed a lack of desire to keep him.
Yeah that's a fair point Dave. Barcelona were a mess behind the scenes at this time and if they had offered Figo a contract that reflected his status history might have been very different. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, all the best
As a football club chairman I can’t think of anyone who’s been as successful as he has so you have to give it to him he is the best. Thanks for commenting mate, all the best
While the documentary is good, I kept thinking that it could have been shorter. Some things are being repeated several times. I've noticed that in other documentaries I watched.
Thanks for the feedback mate. I’m new to this storytelling and video editing thing so I appreciate any feedback on how I can improve them. All the best
How naive to expect Figo to feel the same way about Real Madrid as the fans do. They really didn't get it, 24 years is a long time ago so maybe they've worked it out in the meantime?...?.... Figo isn't even Spanish, ffs!!!!!
A lot of people have made the same point to me mate - that the burden of history between Barca and Real was not Figo's to carry and that he was well within his rights. I must say I'm surprised at how many people think the Barca fans overeacted. I suppose as football fans we may expect an unreasonable level of loyalty from players who don't have the same emotional connection to the club that we do. Thanks for commenting mate, really appreciate it. All the best
Barcelona embarrassing themselves like they did with Messi 😂 Figo wasn't Catalan or even Spanish he was Portuguese and he didn't care about the petty racism,he just wants to kick a ball for the team that pays the most
Yeah that’s a fair point don and a lot of people share that view. Footballers are professionals at the end of the day and have to look after their own interests. But I think for a lot of fans when a player joins a club they have to respect the culture and traditions associated with it. Depends on your point of view I suppose. Thanks for commenting mate
And still majority of football fans are naive enough to not really realize that (almost all) players value more their self interests (especially money) than loyalty to club. Even winning titles are perhaps not their primary preference?
I agree there is a degree of naivety to it. I’m currently working on another video which explores this theme in more detail. Watching this video back I wish I’d gone into it in greater depth so I’m going to put that right with the next one
Genius by Florentino Perez… giving Figo £1.7m upfront as a nice big dangly carrot… and then saying if he didn’t join after all it’ll cost him £19m…. Figo took the bait and took a gamble… maybe he didn’t think Perez would win and he’d pocket a nice couple mil for doing nothing… but the best bit of this is that if Figo didn’t join, the season tickets for the Madridistas would cost the same as Figo would owe Perez, so essentially Luis would have been paying for the Real fans tickets for an entire season 🤣🤣🤣 you couldn’t make it up lol!
Mmmm funny Dow ,i'm sure that Figo thought like Johan cruyff, back in the 80 's ,i'm from rotterdam, and in those day's Johan ( rip) made the décision to go to feyenoord rotterdam, and wel ,you know that year ( i was 14 year's old ) feyenoord won the double ,championship and cup ,while loosing against ajax 8-2 ,well anyway, i have friends that refused to go to the games and they even said that it diden't count for them the prices that year ,i'm a old hooligan, when i was young and Johan teached me that it's only football not war cheers folks
Very true Robert, at the end of the day it’s just a game but we attach other things to it such as culture, history and politics meaning for many people their football team is a representation of them and their identity. Thanks for watching mate, really appreciate it
How is it the same as Steven Gerrard? Gerrard was from Liverpool and been with them since a child whilst Figo was Portuguese not Spanish or Catalan and owed nothing to them 😂 why would figo care about Barcelona? 😂
I think the point is that he was embraced by Barcelona to the extent that he became ‘one of their own’ and a symbol of who they are, a way of emphasising how the relationship between player and club seemed so impenetrable and a transfer to Madrid thus unimaginable.
Hi Conrad. I'm not sure what I could put in a Patreon that would make it worth people's while. Maybe once the channel is more established (hopefully) I'll be able to create one. Thanks for stopping by mate and thanks for the comment. All the best
Figo? Really? Not that whole Di Stefano fiasco? Same 2 clubs were involved and that is what started the "legend of Real Madrid" lol, I have a book on the entire history of football that explains it all.
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories It's called the history of football or something like that, my father bought it for me way back, hardcover, but it's in a somewhat textbook format, with quotes, citations and everything. @@DanRenoyasFootballStories I also watched the Calciopoli video you did and was really impressed with the depth. I think you also use mucic really well in your stories. It's never too loud or too quiet.
Really looking forward to the next one 🙌
Thanks bro
incredible content, please make more videos
Thank you Lawrence I'm really glad you enjoyed it and thanks for leaving a comment it really means a lot. I'm just putting the finishing touches to the next video so it should drop in the next few days. Thanks again man, all the best
This channel needs promoting.
Thank you Damiano, I really appreciate that mate. Glad you enjoyed the video. There's a lot more to come mate. Thanks for your support, all the best
This was well executed, great story telling 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you mate really glad you enjoyed it. All the best man
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories likewise pal, keep up the good work!
Thanks bro
Top class production 👏
If i may be so kind as to make a suggestion for a future post.
The corruption of FIFA that only came to light in 2015.
A general area will do 😉
I’m from Manchester mate but I live in Liverpool - and support Arsenal 😀
@DanRenoyasFootballStories A Gooner being raised in the NW, how did that happen 😳 🤔
I am a Liverpool fan now live in London - kinda ironic, really 😆
Keep up the great work!
Thank you Mohamed, I most definitely will. Thanks for watching mate, all the best
A few people have mentioned this one and I’d love to do a video on it I just can’t find enough good footage to use. I’ll keep working on it though.

Thank you so much for the suggestions I was hoping someone would suggest videos they’d like me to do. I’ve got two I’m working on at the moment but I’ll definitely do one of these in the future. All the best mate
They got it wrong. In 2000 Zidane was the best player in the world.
He had been the inspiration behind Frances WC & Euro champions.
And now Luis Figo never really accepted anymore at Barcelona, even as an ambassador to the club.
Yeah very true Gio and I understand why the Barca fans can’t forgive him. Thanks for leaving a comment mate, all the best
How do you have less than 1k subs
Thanks Maks! I’ve got 849 more than I expected mate. I really appreciate your comment, all the best my guy
Wow, just wow….
Thank you Sibtain I’m so pleased you enjoyed it and thank you for leaving a comment. All the best buddy
That's why Papa Perez is the 🐐
Worshipping billionaires tells a lot of those worshippers.
As a football club chairman I can’t think of anyone who’s been as successful as he has so you have to give it to him he is the best. Thanks for commenting mate, all the best
@@HMS1955-hs6zi I'm not worshipping, I'm just giving respect because he knows how to run a football team
Meant no harm or disrespect. Just thought how you could improve. Good luck.
NO mate not at all no offence taken, I'm genuinely glad when people point out how I can make them better I really appreciate it
How naive to expect Figo to feel the same way about Real Madrid as the fans do.
Tbh bro my cousin blew me
Imagine the insane levels of racism if Luis Figo were black.
Sadly you're probably right mate
They were equal in treatment for a change! I still remember that pig head dripping on the field.
What is it with Barcelona and financial problems?
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories I think you can make another edition of this vid much later at some point. It would be nice
I always thought Figo was a better drinker than Ronaldo, from what I saw anyway.
A better drinker?
Amazing 😂😂..Hala Madrid
Mo Johnston to rangers was worse 🐀
Yeah that’s a fair shout mate I’ve got that one on the list to do. Thanks for commenting mate, all the best
@@DanRenoyasFootballStoriesgreat video but. Top quality 😉
Thanks mate, really appreciate that. All the best pal
Thanks for watching mate, really appreciate it
Gooo
How is it the same as Steven Gerrard? Gerrard was from Liverpool and been with them since a child whilst Figo was Portuguese not Spanish or Catalan and owed nothing to them 😂 why would figo care about Barcelona? 😂
Yeah that’s fair enough mate a lot of people feel the same way
I think the point is that he was embraced by Barcelona to the extent that he became ‘one of their own’ and a symbol of who they are, a way of emphasising how the relationship between player and club seemed so impenetrable and a transfer to Madrid thus unimaginable.

Celtic vs. Rangers is a bigger derby. Religion has been around way before the Civil War and Francos dictatorship.
You’re right mate and it was only after uploading and watching it back that it made me think
That dirty top doesn't suit Gerrard 🤮
😂 it just looks wrong doesn’t it! Thanks for commenting mate, all the best
Great documentary, figo had it tough lol. Subscribed to your channel 👍.
Too much meandering and regurgitating... Hands down your worst vid.
Figo? Really? Not that whole Di Stefano fiasco? Same 2 clubs were involved and that is what started the "legend of Real Madrid" lol, I have a book on the entire history of football that explains it all.
Yeah that’s a fair point mate. Which book is it you’ve got?
@@DanRenoyasFootballStories It's called the history of football or something like that, my father bought it for me way back, hardcover, but it's in a somewhat textbook format, with quotes, citations and everything. I'll dig into the archives and get back to you.
I appreciate good football history like this, good vid. Earned a subscriber.
Thank you mate and yeah if you could let me know the book title, it sounds like my kind of thing. All the best man
