The opening chords are based on a symmetric pattern by which the minor ones in the bass are in direct contrary motion with those in the treble, similarly to negative harmony. It could be thought as an extension of the octatonic scale which includes other symmetrical neighboring tones (strikingly conceptually similar to Scriabin, but very different in application and sound). A similar passage is found in the opening of Angel of Dusk (the Double Bass Concerto), but this technique appears everywhere through Rautavaara's corpus of work. It is based on the keyboard visual simmetry between Ab and D natural (as exemplified in his Etudes). Arthur Honegger also uses harmonic symmetry in direct contrary motions, for example at the beginning of his 5th Symphony.

Very reminiscent of his Cantus Arcticus written around the same time

C’est beau comme la non-rétractabilité des serres des oiseaux rapaces ou encore, comme l'incertitude des mouvements musculaires dans les plaies des parties molles de la région cervicale postérieure¯\_(ツ)_/¯
