This is the sixth film of the series THE ULTIMATE PERFOMANCE CRUISING CATAMARAN, where we interviewed long term cruisers/liveaboard owners and made catamaran boat tours. There are good discussions about catamaran life, lightweight construction, sailing speed in different wind conditions, advantages of ocean crossing on a light, fast and comfortable catamaran.
This time in the San Blas islands, Panama we met Gerhard, a proud owner of Catana 471 catamaran.
What is so special on this boat?
Daggerboards, high bridge deck clearance, tulip shaped bows, asymmetrical hulls, centred weights and enourmous sails area: yes, it is the ideal combination for a true performance cruiser. The excellent seaworthiness of the Catana 471 has been proven by all owners on the seven seas. Vinylester barrier make a solid and safe base to rely on. All lines come back to the safety of the cockpit on an electrical winch so there is no need to crawl to the mast foot to do your manoeuvres. This boat is extremely easy to single hand. Extra big portholes for light and ventilation for navigation in the tropics. This is the owner’s version with one hull dedicated to a master cabin (proper shower and ensuite bathroom) and 2 guest cabins on the opposite side. Galley up and wide spacious saloon with dedicated chart table, offer all the comfort you need.

The best decision you could made, the right boat and that you now cruising. I am still here in P.H., but ready to leave for cruising in 1 or 2 years.
Since 4 years I own a Freydis 46/49, owner version, so the right vessel is ready to go and need to see more than Greece.

@@UmadumSailing haha… floating campervans I call them. Btw, It would be nice to do a list of most common perf. cats and of cours some more “exotic” ones, like yours… For me, monohull sailor, beside Outrmer there is not much other cats that I know…

gerhard sails the oceans always singlehanded, his wife’s doesnot like it, she flies in, when he’s is there...
