    Sand shrimp is by far the best summer run bait!! Hook mine a little different than Jordan, but this bait catches fish all summer long. I run the hook from underneath so the hook point comes out were the mouth would be, then two half hitches around the lower tail. First one around were the body and tail come together then just under the tail fan. When its hangs it lays straight and looks great in the water. Great eps. Jordan

    Sandshrimp are my favorite steelhead bait. I mostly drift fish with just the tail I run the hook through the scoots with the egg loop over the last ridge on the tail so it lays flat. Also with a corkey

    Jordan, also in reference to what I just said about the rod length (I like) I always had trouble setting a 1ought hook. At the time (1989) I realized that one reason I was having such trouble setting the hook was because of my stretchy monofilament line (usually Maxima Ultragreen in ten or 8 lb test). So I went down in hook size, 1s, 2s, 4s, but the most effective hook and hook size I found for hooking steelhead and salmon was my old standby back in the U.P. of Michigan which was a #8 Lazer Sharp Eagle Claw wide bend hook. The wide bend hook in that size was equivalent to a #4 Mustad and similar to a "circle " hook in design. My catch rate went up. Of course I was using lighter line compared to the modern braids you guys use. The reel I was using was a Quantum QD 1310L which I installed a "knucklebuster" switch on (from the QD1400 series models). I also used a Shimano reel (that came with the knucklebuster --direct drive --switch); however it along with a home built rod it was on was stolen out of my vehicle
    and the Shimanos were no longer available with that feature.

  • @jonlobello7151
    @jonlobello7151 4 роки тому

    Jordan, I build rods and I always favored a little longer rod blank (10 footer)for drift fishing, because I like an extra long handle behind the reel seat for comfort and less fatigue, so with the extra long handle the actual "working part" of the rod is in the 9 to 9-1/2 foot category you're talking about.

      G Loomis is no longer "G. Loomis." Gary sold to Shimano. Now makes blanks only that he sells to custom rod makers. His company is in pacific northwest.

      Mark Oberlatz I think his company is called Edge rods, I saw them at the sportsman show. Most “G Loomis” rods are still made in Washington though, and they don’t use shimano blanks.

    What do you mean by “mending” a line?

    • @morningstar829
      @morningstar829 4 роки тому +1

      mending the line is using the tip of your rod to remove any slack in the line by lifting the line off the water and placing the line back down on the surface of the water in such a way that if a strike happens you can set the hook quickly. When using a bobber on any body of water you will see the line begin to move differently from the water (hence why high vis line is great) and it will start to form bow's (called belly's) between you and the bobber. These bellys make it impossible to set the hook when you get a strike if they are too big because there is too much slack between you and the bobber.

    • @case1bolt
      @case1bolt 4 роки тому +1

      mending the line could also be called re-positioning. basically picking the line up off the water and re-positioning it so the water is pulling your float/drift-setup rather than the line itself. you'll see him do it as the current starts to pull a u-shape in his line on the water. that means it's pulling more on the line rather than his float, so he lifts the line up off the water and reels in some slack so he can still get a good hook set. same in reverse is it starts to go downstream from his position, but he'll release line in a controlled manner rather than reeling in to keep just enough slack for natural presentation, but not too much so he's still in position for a good hook set.
