- Coon Shrimp should be a staple in your Summer Steelhead arsenal. Coon Shrimp that you cure, are even better. Take a look into the "Bait Lab" in the FHN studio, with Duane Inglin, as he shares his proven, #1 Coon Shrimp recipe.
You'll learn how to cure your own shrimp and how to rig and fish them for success.
Recipe for Coon Shrimp Brine (for 1 qrt. jar)
1 bottle Pautzke's Nectar
1 Tbsp Pautzke's Fire Dye
1 Tbsp Agave (liquid sugar)
10 to 15 drops pure anise oil
1 to 2 Tbsp Pautzke's Fire Power Krill Powder
1/4 cup Pautzke's BorX O Fire
1/4 cup non-iodized sea salt
1/4 cup rock salt
1/4 cup refined white sugar
1/4 cup raw washed sugar
Follow the steps in the video and you'll be very successful in producing a very durable bait that works well. Good Luck

So I made these with minor variation 3 weeks ago for summer steelies, but I'd thought you better know that these work AMAZING on Columbia River sockeye! Got limits 3/4 days fishing!

Ready to try this cure. Would I be able to substitute the Borax for Fire cure? Will doing this sustain the longevity of the brine, or make it too hot?
You can use Fire Cure in place of the BorX O Fire, and yes it will add sulfite to the mix. I would use 1/2 the amount of Fire Cure as compared to the BF.
About your fire cure eggcure mixture with sandshrimp ,could powdered sandshrimp work as well?
Yes, absolutely... Most won't have dehydrated sandshrimp, so I show how to do it using fresh or frozen.
Would this recipe work for springers if you added some sulfites? Or would you want to cut back on some sugars and use more salts in place of them? Thanks for answering all my questions, Erik.
It will work for Springers. Add 1/2 Tbsp of Sulfites. Fish one rod from the jar with Sulfites, fish one rod without Sulfites and see what they want. When you are sorting your shrimp to cure, I always make one jar with the bigger shrimp for Salmon.. 😉

Rusty, same rules apply in Multnomah as anywhere, one rod with sulfites, one without. The fish will let you know 😉
Sulfites or Salfates are basically food preservatives. I believe Slamola and other bite stimulants, might be metabisulfites. All very similar.

Wilson, typically one finger width from the bend in the size one hook, to the eye of the size 2 or 4. The second hook size is personal preference. Good luck!!
I watched the video you did a coupe years ago with this cure. I believe it's the same as then. If I remember right you said they will keep for a few years in the frig and fish just as good if not better. I was wondering if you still think that? How long will the be good and what is the quickest you would use them after curing. Thanks
MWE- thanks for the continued follow. To answer your question, I have litterally kept them in my fridge for up to four years and they have fished great and caught fish. Also, give them at least a month or so to cure before fishing them. -D

Do you thaw out the shrimp before curing or just throw it in the brine frozen?
I thaw them enough to separate and sort by size. Usually in the refrigerator for a few hours does the trick. When I put them in the brine, some are still slightly frozen. Thanks for the question. Good luck, DI

Thank you for the comments. Typically I don't bobber-dog them, because of durability. However, they fish great suspended under a float. ;-)
Another question. If using Fire Brine, will that make the shrimp too brittle over time? Would Fire Brine shrimp last 2-3 years?
No, it actually makes them soft overtime. Initially they fish great, then after several months, they begin to soften. They keep much longer when cured in nectar...

They probably will, I haven't tried them, but they work on everything else. ;-)
How long will they last after they are cured
I have literally had them last a couple years in the fridge, and they fish great. No need to try and freeze, because they won't. Just keep them in the refrigerator.
