I did the retrofit about 9 years ago and the issue started to happen again. I had to rewatch your video to remind me of what was back there. Took it apart and found a lint ball stuck in the u trap. Easy to clear and we are back in business. Thanks again for posting this a decade ago!
Add me to list of failed drain pipes/rubber grommet. Just replaced the old design with the new one today. Thankfully we didn't have any damage to our hardwood floors after we found water on it one evening. Found this video and others showing the problem and fix. As shown here, it's a straight forward fix. I defrosted the fridge over night, instead of taking apart taking apart the lower freezer components and then using a hair dryer, chipping away the ice, sucking out water, etc. as shown in other UA-cams. If you have some way of having your food stored somewhere else overnight, this is the way to go. Way easier/faster. The instructions in this video are good, however for my Whirlpool Gold Series fridge (about 10 yrs. old), I had to do a slight modification to get the new drain pipe installed. The white plastic o-ring that needs to be installed over the existing exit tube from the freezer makes for a very tight fit over the new drain pipe. I used a small utility blade to shave off some of the plastic from the inlet hole of the drain pipe, then applied a very small amount of plumbers grease to help make it easier to slip it over the new white plastic o-ring. Worked like a charm. As shown here, the real issue is with the original rubber grommet that was used in the production for these fridges. Very poor design. The new drain pipe should definitely eliminate ever needing to do this again.

For those who are having trouble with the p-trap tube connecting into the spacer bit you inserted over the old drain: Mine was a itch-bay to get on that thing. I trained a hair dryer for about 60-90 seconds on low, which made both parts fit much easier.
Your video is the very best for showing everything you're doing inside the panel. I will definitely try switching out the drain tube to see if it will be the missing step and help me fix my Maytag leak for good. to finally be successful. My biggest barrier has been pulling the refrigerator out; prior owner had a much too large unit slid into a cabinet frame.
Matt, I can't thank you enough! You saved me many more days and months of misery! For the last 2 years, I have had to use a butcher knife (not very wise on my part) to chop, break, and pry up thick sheets of ice in the bottom of my freezer (I have a Whirlpool French door refrigerator with a pull out drawer on the bottom). I watched your video and I said, " I can do this myself." (I actually had a local repair service tell me that it would be over $200.00 for them to come out). After literally cleaning up water and chopping ice for almost two years, I had had enough. I ordered the part (about $12 - and I agree wth the rest of the posts...I feel that the manufacturer should have had to pay for it even though it was a cheap part). I watched your step by step video, and I replaced it myself. (I am female and my husband could not believe that I had fixed it myself when he arrived home). T was quick and easy and it has been over a week and I have no ice build up! Thanks again Matt! Your website is now in my favorites! Keep up the good work. You saved me a ton of money as well!

The repair on my KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS5 was exactly as you said it would be. The ice formed on bottom of the freezer. We had it repaired by a service company 2 years ago. Then it started freezing up again. I watched your video. Ordered the part for $11.00 and removed the old drain and installed the new one. Perfect. Thank you for your help. Highly recommend this video if you have this problem.

Superb work, Matt. Thank you for a clear, thorough description of the problem, removal of the old parts, and installation of the new ones. After we watched this video, my wife called Whirlpool; they sent us the repair kit free of charge. Installation was exactly as shown here. And water has stopped leaking onto our kitchen floor. Many thanks.

This video was just what I needed to fix my Maytag bottom freezer. I defrosted the unit and removed all the ice (shown in one of your other videos), and temporarily removed the "duck bill" flapper valve, as it looked like it would plug right back up. I ordered the P trap kit from your 1 800 number, and will put it on as soon as it arrives. Great job on all your videos! They are extremely helpful.

Great job. My problem was that the fan blew pet hair up the drain ramp and plugged the duck-bill drain valve. I have ten thumbs, but with your video, I managed to clear the problem.
I would like to think you for this DIY video to resolve a relatively easy problem. I only wished my husband and I went to youtube first before going through the hassle of utilizing the warranty we paid for which was pretty much worthless. After viewing your video, I ordered the part and my husband followed the steps. Please keep them coming.

Appliancevideo.com, thanks for an incredible video. I will call Whirlpool Canada on Monday to get the part (hopefully for free) and thanks to your amazing step-by-step, clear video, I am confident I'll be able to install this myself and fix the problem. I'm really, really, thankful.
Call our parts number at 1800-803-5465 we ship to Canada and have several locations there.
You rock! I just had a repairman come out twice in two weeks to a rental I have to defrost and clean out the line on a 2 year old fridge. I was so worried that this was going to keep happening and racking up the bills. Thanks to you I'll be able to fix this myself and show my kids one more thing mom is handy at! Thank you so much!!

Update from 3 weeks ago. The kit was very easy to install as stated previously. However, the freezing ice in the bottom of the freezer continued. Did some more reading....finally got it to stop. Held a hair dryer to the small hole inside the refrigerator freezer as shown on the video for 45 mins. (was able to push the top shelf against the back of the dryer to hold it in place. Then it stayed and I was able to walk away and let it do its' work.) During that time, the water disappeared and hasn't returned in a week. Very happy. The final step is defrosting the plugged tube of ice.
Thank you for the update , sometimes you can get a wrapper or other things such as food stuk in the drain trap. If it happens again you will need to completely defrost it and blow air throgh the drain with an air compressor. Please help us by

Thanks so much for this video! This helped me determine what was wrong with my refrigerator and fix it. I also appreciate the comment from someone who said you have to thaw the drain tray in the back of the freezer so the water would be able to go down the new tube. That was essential to making the new drain tube work. I had to connect a Christmas paper tube to my hand hair drier to get the hot air back to the back so it would thaw the tray. There was a LOT of ice in it, too. Finally I heard the lovely gurgle of the water going down the tube into the drain tray under the refrigerator. Thanks again for the great video you made!

I ordered the drain tube kit, installed it, then thawed out the drain after taking the freezer out. Broke one of the clips holding one of the vents on and had some trouble getting the upper trays back in and aligned, but hopefully this will be the last time I have to take the freezer out and thaw out the drain tube. What a chore, but sure glad I watched this video first.

Ordered parts suggested for any possible fix (except master board) last night and took the front apart this AM. Got all the ice out - and was there ever a huge backup! No wonder the refrigerator was running 60F...no circulation from below whatsoever. Next, when parts arrive I will install the drain kit and away we go. I'm just a do-it-yourself kinda guy but this was really a simple job with the help of this video. THANKS so much guys.

After a year of use our Whirlpool refrigerator displayed all the symptoms: Ice buildup and leaking during defrost cycle. When I often try to fix mechanical items at home I usually break them or have to call for help from certified plumbers, electricians and appliance persons. I was hesitant to try to fix the refrigerator, but followed the online instructions from Appliancevideo. It was easier than I thought. Just a note: Be very careful disconnecting the original defrost drain tube. Take your time and you should have no problems. Thanks, Appliancevideo folks!

Thank you so much for the video, very clear on the steps. My whirlpool 36" is 2.5 years old and water keeps coming since this summer. I went to a service center asking for help and they mentioned this is a known issue. I called Whirlpool service center and was told that they can send me the part for free. But they need the part number in order to ship the correct lit. Thanks for your video, so I was able to give it to them right away. Now the kit has arrived and the refrigerator has been defrosted for 48 hours. I am ready to install the kit by myself. Thanks again!

Excellent video. Thank you
Ok. I got the p trap drain from you. Blazing shipping and was the right part!. Pulled everything from freezer did just as the video shows. Then took back off and installed the p trap tube and sure enough the factory grommet was indeed just as the video shows. Took about an hr and a half-two hours taking breaks and allowing time for some ice to melt. The turkey baster works great. Thanks so much for your video and the quick shipping of parts. You guys are awesome!.

Thank you for another outstanding video and the replacement part. Our 4 year old KitchenAid just did this water ruining our flooring and the bottom clip breaking off the funnel. As others said this should have been a recall since these cost over one thousand dollars. thank you again for your informative videos.

This was incredibly helpful! I have a Maytag, but the build is just about identical. As it turns out, I only cleaned the existing nipple (it was pretty disgusting!). Now that I know the fix, I can easily do the maintenance every year or two. Thank you :)

this fix worked for me! I had this problem back in April of 2018 and haven't had an issue since (its now Jan 2019). I didn't need any new parts, just cleaned everything and reassembled. I spent the most time defrosting and thawing the ice buildup inside the freezer.

Successfully executed the replacement. This video made it extremely easy. I only had a problem getting the old tube disconnected from the drain pan. I tried several ways but was not able to disconnect it and was afraid I would crack it at the drain pan, and then have to replace the drain pan too. So I just left it in place, but bent it backwards and installed the new tube right beside it. The new tube will just free float over the drain pan. I know there is a risk that it could adjust and move outside the drain pan, so we will keep an eye out. Thanks again for the great video.

After paying $75 for a repair person to "fix" this issue through a home warranty that came with our house. Then having them come back a second time because they didn't actually fix it, it stopped working again a few months later. I finally bit the bullet and invested to $12 for the part and fixed it myself in less than 15 minutes (including cleaning out lego pieces from behind the fridge).Awesome simple video, I may never call a repairman again, I will just keep checking back on this site!

336,000 views ... maybe, just maybe ... it's a design problem that whirlpool should pay for
Clearly a design flaw. It should have been a recall instead, or at least Whirlpool should notify the affected customers with a free replacement kid, instead of having their fridges silently damaging the floors.
@@thx1234567 count me in on that. I will have to replace my whole kitchen floor. I am 76 yo senior woman and I couldn't afford a repair. Now, I believe I can do this myself, just pray I can squeeze out enough for the part. I am so glad I finally found the EXACT VIDEO WITH MY EXACT REFRIGERATOR. The different, but similar ones just confusing. As far as the kitchen floor? I just have no idea, but maybe it will dry at least..

Good Video. After removing and inspecting the factory installed rubber piece I found it was indeed very sticky and clogged with lint/dust. Cleaned it up real well with some liquid dish soap. Dried it well with paper towels. Scraped out the remaining lint residue with a flat tooth pick. Cleaned it in liquid soap again. Dipped JUST the outlet end (narrow slit opening) in vegetable oil. Dabbed excess oil with a paper towel so as to leave piece effectively dry. I EXPECT this free fix to remedy the water leakage issue we have experienced. I also anticipate needing to clean it every 6 - 12 months. It's a 15 minute job. It would take me that long to order a new one online and at least twice that long to go to the parts store and order it. If you're savvy enough to set a reminder on your phone for 6 mos. like I'm gonna do you should be all set.
As far as a class action suit as suggested in the comments below... That seems like a lot of time, effort and money. While I'd like to get my curled hardwood flooring fixed, I'll wait and see if it self-corrects. If not I'll sand and refinish it myself. Probably in 6 months when I clean up the rubber outlet piece. If anybody takes on a class-action let me know. Peace!

Great video!!! Finally a fix. Can I add- that when putting on the white rubber "grommet" spacer, soak it in hot water for a minute to soften it so it slip on much easier. Do the same thing when sliding the drain tube over the white grommet. Soak the top of the drain tube in hot water to soften it and it will slip very easily over the white grommet. This video was extremely helpful to me! THANK YOU

FYI I recently bought a home with a KitchenAid French-door Stainless Steel fridge, Model: KFCS22EVMS7 that has the same problems and defective part as show in the video. The part is available on Amazon for less than $20, but I called KitchenAid first, and glad I did. They are coming out next week FREE of charge (Parts & Labor) OFF warranty to fix the problem which they are well aware of. Well done KitchenAid A+++ :)

I just used your video to replace my old grommet with this drain tube replacement (ordered on Amazon for only $8) and your instructions were VERY easy to follow - only took me about 20 mins, using a hand wrench also, my electric drill doesn't have a 1/4" socket adapter (I will definitely pick one up now after all that manual labor, haha) ... Anyways - thank you so much for this video, I had NO trouble following it at all... all done!

ApplianceVideo.com I didn't have a question... I was simply thanking you for the video
Sorry about that , thank you for your input.
I had a 33"model Maytag. Bought about 2012-13? and it started leaking at corners. While it is a serious Maytag design flaw, at least I was able to obtain the parts after watching this video ($14 via Amazon) and installed them/fixed it myself in 15 min! And I am 70.5 years old. Great video. I think, however, ApplianceVideo must have also previously removed the fan installation for the video; the circulating fan was a bit difficult to get around on my Maytag unit but still it was a good self-help video. Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed video, this was exactly what I needed before deciding to call a repairman. I was able to follow your video exactly, and found the grommet that was clogged. I think I may have to do a 24 hour defrost to start fresh but I will know that in a couple of days if ice starts to build up again on the bottom. Thanks.

+Marcello Lariosa This video is exactly what I needed too. Marcello - Did you end up needing to do the 24 hour defrost? I've got the new parts installed, but I'm worried it's still frozen solid up in there and the water won't make it down to the p-trap. Otherwise, I will just have to wait and see too! :)
Great Video. Thanks
