- Jamaica 101: Barbers - Every Jamaican trip to the Barbers will always be on full of tales, excitement and wisdoms. I encountered these two seasoned Souljah's taking care of fe dem business under one Banana tree on a dirt path. After seeing Marvin attempting to cut his friend Ken's hair with an old rusty razor blade, I went and bought them couple bic razors complete with handle so that he could carry out the procedure more safely.
This clip is one of many that I have made on my 1st trip to the Island of Jamaica. It is part of a documentary that I hope to complete sometime after my return to the UK
It's amazing how all barbershops have this sort of conversation in common. Everything about this interaction is relatable.
Everyday I listen to this reasoning,
Yes sah loud and clear dis is parable from de humble Jamaican brother
I'm glad i found this...pure thinking and.nothing better than a thinking man. Youths today hard fi learn the positive things.
I like these people, the Jamaicans I've known in the past and these gents in the video seem to think very deeply about things. It commands respect, they seem to only speak if it's the truth.

Wow! I viewed this video 8 year ago 😄 feels like yesterday.
I love this language/accent (I know some consider it just an accent, even though I am not Jamaican I would consider it a language) so much. It honestly is very beautiful.
as a Jamaican, I can definitely tell you that it is indeed a language with its own grammatical structure. Its taking time, but people are slowly accepting that what we speak is more than just an 'accent' or 'broken english'. :)
+Blue Lagoon exactly, not to mention people often see it as a less educated culture, because they believe it's broken English, when in reality it's really more like its own language because there is a grammar difference. It bothers me when people think that.
that's the same way I feel darling. Don't worry though, the younger generations, like myself have begun to realize how foolish these ideas are and soon our language will be given the credit it deserves.
Because it truly is beautiful.
Wise bredda.

Let me try...
A. Jack of all trade.
B. You can say I have been for about two months now.
(Everyone knows ' Yeh mon', means 'yes'.)
A. This man learns fast (da man yah tek on faas.)
B. Because you see (as the situation is), right now we don't have any money to pay a barber.
A. True.
B. The barber is charging J$500 and $400, and we do not have that, so we do it ourselves.
Tired. Use context clue to understand. You don't have to understand every word.
That Patois sounds so easy-going, you get relaxed just listening to this :D I only understood a few words and sentences, too bad there's no subtitles, I'd love to hear his wisdom
+Rene van der Kraats Thanks for the feedback... I might have to add some. :0)
+Rene van der Kraats If you understand the grammar it is really easy to understand. There are some words that are different too. N'yam means to eat. And "haffi" means to have. Fi = For. It's 99% English with different grammar and a few colloquialism from the island. But it's all English.
Wise-dom
