- Jamaica 101: Jamaican Yam farmers financial struggle between , Buyers, Import & Exporters is laid out in this short clip. Farmers complain of having to sell their years crop for as little as $30 Jamaican dollars for a pound of Yam. $30 is equivalent to 22 pence at the time of writing. Yellow Yam sells in Brixton Market for an average price of £1.39
This clip is one of many that I have made on my 1st trip to the Island of Jamaica. It is part of a documentary Jamaica101 that I hope to complete sometime after my return to the UK

They need to create a finished product. ex:cassava or yam flour, chips, cassava bread etc. People need to understand the market & how it works. You must make a finished product in today's world to survive. I also come originally from a farming community (Santa Cruz St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) and completely understand the position the people are facing.

project10bball They could cut the yam and freeze it. Like mixed veg. Then you can just drop it in your boiling water when ready or in your soup. I live in England and would definitely buy that product. I would also love to buy frozen ackee rather than tinned. Jamaica needs to capitalise of its diaspora because I would love to be sure that the sweet potato or mango that I’m buying is from Jamaica and not from anywhere else.
kwacou yellow yam isn't turned into any finished product that I know of, maybe foofoo flour but that's it
Monique L I live in Australia and can't buy fresh yam, but we do buy frozen dasheen/taro and cassava from Fiji, so you have a great idea. I we would love to see frozen yellow yam for sale
If the farmers get together and forge some exclusive arrangements with local eateries, hotels, resorts, etc they can be a part of the farm to table group that uses fresh produce from farmers on the island
with the amount of Jamaicans outside Jamaica, the island shouldnt be in this sort of problem. Jamaicans are allowing chinese to drive them out of existance.

Maybe what could be a solution is a company that knows how to produce a finished product from the yams. After their market research etc then farmers could work together to ensure there is always a supply of the produce... You know the story. They'd have to ensure though that while they supply the company they also have part of the supply available for the local market.
Additionally, while yam farming is what the community is good at and has been doing for generations, other crops are necessary to be planted so everyone is not harvesting the same product at the same time and causing a glut on the market and low financial gains for farmers. Work smarter, not harder.
Yellow yam from Jamaica is at $2.99 Can per pound........expensive. Yam weighs quite heavy. But we buy it nonetheless (lol).

A book to read about Jamaican economics which is good I got it in Jamaica by Dr Dennis Chung is Chatering Jamaica Social, Economic Problems also gives very good dating and evidence of Jamaican GDP growth etc
I will send you a link about the financial Crisis in Jamaica and this documentary was done in the 90's but the problem which they are talking about former prime minister Michael Manley was warning us about what would happen if we have to much imports as well as IMF loans and Manley died in 1997 so all of the economic problems are a result of which the former Prime Minister warned us about and when I send it to you I would recomened you watch the other parts in full
That is actually quite expensive for a starch for a country of this GDP produced domestically.

Here is a solution; form a group called "#JamaicansYamFarmersAssociation!
Then apply for an export license.
Jamaicans abroad and even open-minded people outside our #Diaspora will be happy to buy your delicious yam when they're exported.

Where in Jamaica is that? I love the golden yam. I paid $3 US per lbs where am at.
Anywhere on the island as long as you buy direct from the farmer
@beckton11 This is troubling. I had the feeling it had something to do with this. So-called fair trade and countries being exempt from fair trade. It's so sad to see a country like Jamaica importing things like Patties! OMG

Yams are high hi Prosecco what they need to do is find their own market and stop selling to the exporters the problem is they don't have the transportation to get their goods the market

it is the Latin American a Market which has pushed out the demand for caribbean produce because the latin American Market 'Columbia,Mexico,El Salvador, Nicaragua' are all exempt from certain child Labour laws that is another reason why the Carribbean market and export system is always comprimised then Jamaica consumes 80% imports which then Devalues the Jamaican Dollar because Jamaica then spends money which they do not have they are even importing Patties now and Group Economics will fix it

Percy... that was my main concern on Silent Hill. Crazy hairpin bends high up in the hills, cars racing around like it's nothing... they toot the horn as they whip around them bends, like that's gonna warn people or traffic coming the other way. I saw car wrecks over the cliff where they its too far down to retrieve the wreckage... it just stays and rots... It's madness!!

That's the problem with Caribbean people. We are all so negative. Notice how many options the gentleman with the camera gave the guy, but he always had a negative response. Not one positive response came from him. Hold your yams my friend, because things will always be tough as long as you don't start thinking positively.

Seems like your didn't listen to wat the man said the problem is money which they don't have to get anything started, plus it's hard to get people to join together for a common goal such as forming a union or co-op becaause everyone pockets is different and as he said some people need money now so they will circumvent the union and still sell to the thieving middle man..

I am in favour of her dropping the Queen as head of state in Jamaica so Jamaica will be republic instead of the monarchy so I like that but she has a feminist advisor in her cabinet as well as be a defender of gay rights and she has made Garveyism madatory in the schooling system so right now there is a real toss up with her but Politicians are corrupt so there is a lot to be suspect about £1 get you $136 JMD now that all comes from Loans they can't afford
