Personally, I always took it that Siegmeyer was a patient man and WAS a great warrior. But he has gotten older and perhaps his mind and skills started to fade. This was compounded by the undead curse, and he began to fade more and more. His quest is to prove he is the man he used to be. I think he is in the process of hollowing even by the time we meet him. He's essentially a once great adventurer with dementia, going on one last quest before he no longer can.
Dementia was exactly my take also, since it's no small problem in Japan. It perfectly explains the parent-child role reversal, as well as Sieglinde's frantic worry that he might be "causing trouble" somewhere.
I've been feeling like a Siegmeyer myself for a long while now, even though you were talking about a fictional character, what you were saying really resonated with me as a person, like you were speaking directly to me when explaining siegmeyers behaviors and mindset, and really gave me a perspective on the way I have been the past 12 months, thank you for this, I see now what I must do to pull myself out of this rut. I had no idea the answer to my issues would be in a Dark Souls lore video of all places. This was an amazing piece of work, truly.

Also importantly: after you save him in Anor Londo and talk to him again in Firelink, he says "I'll be heading down below shortly. There wasn't anything worthwhile up above." How could such a pious and jolly knight regard the image of the goddess Gwynevere as 'nothing worthwhile'? Because he never saw her. He gave up at ornstein and smough and turned back.
And she doesn't even have a 100% physical block shield either, not to mention said shield can't be used for parrying. Sieglinde pretty much did DkS2's illusory ring challenges without that even being her end goal.
He would spawn in and instantly run into a hole....and it would be glorious! Seriously though modding DS1 to have quests like DS3 and having Siegmeyer grow with each encounter with your character so he becomes stronger would be cool. You summon him in BoC and he acts as a distraction for the tentacles and once you destroy the 2nd bug he makes the leap over to the 3rd one and charges through all the brambles and one-shots it with a cleave would be awesome. It also allows you to extend the plot by finding him and his daughter fighting in Ash Lake (as Siegmeyer is now a badass) and having the choice of who to side with (of course it would be nice to add more Sieglinde content). Would need to find some good impersonators to record audio which would be a pain but the idea of these lore ideas becoming mods and getting mods like, The Plot Against The Gods, would be pretty cool.
i think everyone likes Siegmeyer for more than just his charm, though i can only speak for myself. we like his personality, his speech, but perhaps we also resonate with "being in a pickle" and telling ourselves that "we'll think of something, you'll see!" our goals are blurry, solutions to our problems are half-cocked, our present is waiting for solutions and opportunities to come to us, our futures are more of the same unless someone knocks us out of it or we change ourselves in some way. waiting for something that has no guarantee of arriving is no way to solve problems or live. for this video, this knight of the internet thanks you sincerely.
I always saw Siegmyer as the guy who aspired to be more than he could handle. He seemed to be that guy who spends his life savings to try and fulfill his dream, even when his family tries to tell him it isn't realistic, but he just doesn't have the capability to make it come true. He seemed a good man who's head was in the clouds, ignoring how his choices have hurt those around him.
That "peaked in high school" bro, who is hard working, but keeps trying to peddle MLM schemes, or borrow money to start overly ambitious businesses he has no experience in.
I think he had grand aspirations and would tell his daughter stories of adventuring. So as she grew she became an adventurer, and that overshadows her father's stories. So he felt he needed to prove he was an adventurer as he didn't want his daughter to view him as less than her. She knows he feels this way, which is why she so desperately wants us to get him to stop. Because she knows he isn't as capable as her, but she still adores him anyways.

That's a nice comparison. Better, even. It implies Siegmeyer has a sluggish temperament and a good soul, not a lack of willingness with poor character.
Great video. His choice to create his own obstacles is his most defining trait, behind his own warmth. The conspiracy behind the gods subplot is so unfinished a thought that I tend to not apply it to much of anything. In my mind, they end up in Ash Lake because this is a place his daughter knew there was a bonfire but no one for her father to harm - it's the one place that she could safely kill her father over and over again as his body reformed to ensure that his hollowing would complete safely and as rapidly as possible while endangering no one. Siegmeyer was a flawed by likeable person; his daughter may be the biggest badass in the series.
Wow. Over the course of this video, she has totally become my favorite character. A dedicated, intelligent, professional woman, and she isn't even undead! She's amazing!
There isn't any plot unfinished in Dark Souls and Sieglinde is a piece of shit and I kill her everytime I see her. What trouble could Siegmeyer be sleeping standing up for centuries like a log somewhere. The only thing that makes sense is that he's a deserter and it's her duty as a family member to end him. A knight takes a oath to the crown so wtf is he doing in Lordran having his own adventures instead of in Catarina serving his country. What a selfish asshole I'm glad she kills that jackass.
Someone HAS to make a mod where you can summon Siegmeyer as a phantom and then he just sits there in front of the fog gate and waits for you to beat the boss alone
He stands for a minute studying their attacks, gets ready to charge in and either instantly eats every attack or unluckily gets dropped into a pit and fades
An excellent analysis of my favorite Dark Souls character, though I will say one thing about his death at Sieglinde's hands: while the plot against the gods certainly sounds feasible when you put it as you have, I think the much more simpler, obvious possibility is the real truth: Siegmeyer's "final" adventure is because after having been saved by you in Izalith, he's had his epiphany. He is undead, his time is limited, as hollowing comes for all eventually. He's made amends with Sieglinde, and so he sets off, not expecting to be seen again. Sieglinde's words at his death are those of a mourning daughter. The "trouble" he caused was his needs for assistance from the player character. The reason it's over, is because he has gone hollow, and has been put to rest. This chapter in the book of Sieglinde's life has been completed. She came to Lordran for her father, and with him gone, she has nothing to stay for. She is not undead. She can't link the Fire. She returns to the world of the living, to her home, to live the rest of her life. As for how or why Siegmeyer goes hollow, I certainly don't think it is because Sieglinde killed him over and over again until he went mad. Such a fate I think is too cruelly out of character for Sieglinde. I think it just came with being his "final adventure". You gave him his epiphany, but he still had no direction. He sets out aimlessly, and wanders to the farthest reaches of the world. Ash Lake is not easy to reach, it is an exhausting journey. He in all likelyhood laid here to rest, as he often did, only to never awake again as himself.
she called it his final adventure because she knew that getting to ash lake would be both a great feat and a moment of closure with his family, and finding those two things he's been seeking would remove what little purpose he had left. she didnt stop him and only put him out of his misery after he hollowed because it was inevitable for him to end up like that, and quite frankly it's a better fate than if he had hollowed waiting for a damn gate to open
why would he go hollow from getting exhausted, hollowing doesn't come the same death does to an old man on his last hike. if adventuring is his life then how would an adventure to a mystical underground lake make him lose his purpose???

my interpretation is that sieglinde knew her father well enough to figure that finding out everything that happened while he wasnt looking would be enough to make him go hollow, and thought it would be a fitting end to send him off while giving him a closure that he very much needed, despite not being able to handle it. rather than making him go hollow by killing him until he gives up, she made him go hollow by giving him the harshest reality check in the history of mankind and then took him out after he went hollow

No matter how many times my dad upset me or let me down, you have no clue how lucky I feel that he is a present guiding force in my life. As long as you're there, with him, giving him the tools of your trade and stories of your day, I think your son is in good hands.

As a dad this is a constant struggle. Considering this video in light of all fat boys flaws and ineptitude in being a Knight and adventures she went on to be one hardcore little lady. If your trying to be better you are on the right path, you will never know till they have developed and become who you helped them to be. I would like to oppose this characterization with a few facts and theories of mine: First things first, Siegmayer has the Catarina armor, an armor set only given to knights in Catarina who have proven themselves in the battlefield. Would a man, who is just indecisive and actually does nothing himself, ever get such meritorious deed worthy of being bestowed this armor? Doubtfull. Also, his comment of his head spinning is actually pretty valid. Remember his armor is a giant metal ball. Even if you ignore the fact he could easily dislocate or outright shatter his neck while rolling with that kind of helmet on, just being disoriented while wearing a helmet that blocks 80% of his vision in a literal death house full of traps and enemies is a death sentence. And removing the armor in a dangerous place such as this is a bad idea. Would you tell soldiers deployed in Afghanistan to remove their helmet or bulletproof vest to run faster in enemy territory? As for Anor Londo... Siegmayer is supposed to have scaled in throught window that is open right behind him. So he didn't clear *any* knight to get there, so he cannot just backtrack throught the window and both the stairs and the room are blocked by enemies. No way back, and it's dangerous to go forth because he has no idea of 'how' strong the knights are, just that they 'are' strong. The bit about Siegmayer not helping you back is also false. He gives you the little being's ring, which you can otherwise only get as a starting gift, and a unique offensive miracle. He does repay you, just not physically. Do bodyguards expect their payment to be their clients to stand up to physically protect them in return? As for Sieglind, while Siegmayer seems to love her, and she does so too, she already killed her father once. We do not know the circumstances behind that, but Siegmayer clearly doesn't hold a grudge. But, as you said, Siegmayer wasn't there when his wife died. Why? That fact is so simple, and you mention it a couple of times in your video without realizing it and making the connection: Siegmayer... is an *undead*. What is ghe treatment of undead in that world? Shoved in an asylum until they rot. Wouldn't that explain why Siegmayer, a recognized knight of Catarina, is free to roam away from his country and yet missed his wife's death? Because he had to leave. And his daughter is probably burdened by the fact that her father, once a recognized knight of Catarina is running around as another undead, looking for trouble and adventure and "causing trouble". That aggro dialogue of Sieglind shlws she has sone hate for the undead, especially those who lose their mind. Finally, Siegmayer isn't a coward, someone who uses others for his own advantage and doesn't repay them. And he proves that by willingly casting himself on a pit of dangerous monsters to help us go past them, throwing away what little is left of his life and his mind on the wind in order to repay the kindness we have shown him. This also goes against what you said about Siegmayer lying about the moss. Remember, it takes one poison moss to get to Quelaag's lair from his spot, and one to get to the wheel elevator.... or to the Ash Lake. I really don't know why you didn't mention him willingly *trying* to return the favour of you killing the knights in Anor Londo by being the one to step up this time, knowing that he would die. But that *is* a huge oversight. In the end Siegmayer was a jolly, happy go lucky knight who wanted to go adventuring once his life as a knight and as a human ended, but he found himself being overpowered by the reality and actual logistics of said adventuring. Not a delusional manipulator, nor some fool who was slaughtered by some terrorist/rebel wannabe daughter because he wouldn't be able to keep a secret. Which makes little sense, as it would actually be better for Sieglind to not tell him anything, which would have kept Ash Lake and Siegmayer apart.
All these videos read way too much into the characters and stretch to ascribe aspects to them that I don't think exist, I think the Dark Souls characters are honestly quite straightforward and simple, and were always intended to be. I've watched a few of these videos and I find it hard to pay them any credence, I think people just love "the dark secrets behind your favourite characters 😳😳🤪😢" shit despite the fact it's generally reaching.

@@bluegum6438 some of them seem like really well thought out deep analysis that makes sense like the ash lake video but then others feel like complete stretches that don’t work. It’s seems like an attempt to deeply analysis everything when only certain aspects can be analyzed in such a way.
I once had the exact mentality and it was this game series that allowed me to overcome that. His story also tells me that if you stick around long enough you will find something that will give you the courage to put you life one the line. And often it is the influence of a "hero" who showed you that it is possible.
It's a surprisingly common mentality among the Souls playerbase itself (just wait around and summon other people to do everything for you), which also results in a noticeable chunk of said playerbase faltering super hard when they can't do that. There's a massive difference between them and the players who actually do everything themselves and are brave enough to take risks while making calculations on the fly regarding how to bypass certain hurdles. And you always know who is in which of these categories if you either co-op or invade just with a few moments of watching how the host behaves (cower away or boldly participate in the front line). And Siegmeyer shows that those waiters aren't really bad people, but just have let their fear of losing take over their actions in a way that's hurting themselves more so than anything else.
I feel this in a very intimate way. I just got out of a nine year relationship and it was emotionally abusive for me but there is definitely an element of me becoming attached and comfortable and lazy. I got comfortable in the emotional neglect and was on the verge of marrying into this life. More or less resigning myself to this as there was nothing more for me to strive to. She saw how she was hurting me and took the difficult step to end it and I have been so lost and listless and depressed and even suicidal but I have been slowly, so slowly finding myself and this video came out at just the right time. My 41 page script has become a 66 page script. I'm consulting editers and practicing new skills for a new job and doing it slowly. One day at a time. I want to be a reliable person. I want to be my own person again. I don't want to just die. I want to fight and this is 100% reinforcing my commitment to change. One day at a time. One page at a time. One thing at a time.
I was in an abusive family that I let keep me down for many years. If I had the will that I do today then I could've gotten out of it back then. It took my girlfriend and one of my friends to really tell me that I had to leave that family. But I'm here today and so are you. I'm glad you found the strength to keep going. My guess is that he's heavily influenced by Don Quixote. Chances are that he was an elderly nobleman, possibly with a knighthood, but dramatically out of practice, obsessed with stories of the chivalrous knights of Gwyn and in the shadow of heroes like his daughter. I would guess that becoming undead reinvigorated him because of the prophecy of the chosen one linking the first flame. Learning about what happened to his wife likely completely destroys both his faith in the gods and his spirit.
I genuinely believe that Siegward and Siegmeyer are narcoleptics, which is cool because it's played for laughs and doesn't get explicitly mentioned (it would probably be viewed more like a curse than a disease) - it makes their accomplishments in climbing and combat feel more epic, knowing they have to deal with chronic fatigue and tiredness. Many narcoleptics try to manage the illness by taking frequent naps. Edit: Just watched through to the end, this might be your best video yet - the theory makes perfect sense.
I viewed his frequent naps and lapses of attention as nearly going hollow. Hollows always seem to be very relaxed when left alone and they don't seem to get attacked by other enemies.
I feel as though Siegmeyer is like a lot of peoples dads. charismatic, is strong and not necessarily dumb, but has a subtle dooming ego, and needs others despite never admitting it
Siegmeyer is a badass hero in my mind who just gets stuck every now and then and we all need that sometimes. This guy is strong enough to make it inside Anor Londo's rooftop archers past the mirror guardians, he fought his way through blight town & the great swamp, he braved and slew the same demons & past the same lava in the ruins you did. If only you could talk to Sigmeyer that you want to cooperate with him as an adventuring party he would have never hollowed because he'd see his efforts as just as impressive because you did it together.

You've inspired me to cosplay as Siegmeyer. I will drop my summon sign, and when people summon me - expecting me to be a valiant, charming, & courteous warrior - I will, instead, just hang back and watch them fight.
i never liked the guy, never understood why people liked him, calling him "onion bro", the only thing i respect is his optimism as an adventurer who doesn't let things get to him no matter what situation hes in to where hes bound to get out of the most challenging cases on his own.
What if sitting and thinking about a problem is what keeps Siegmeyer from going hollow? He's just meditating about a solution to an obstacle and we keep coming along and solving things, so he has to move on to another; rinse, repeat, go hollow
@@artey6671 well, if he isn’t aware of the undead prophecy, which seems difficult because the crestfallen warrior straight up tells us (with it implying our character, if they could speak that is, at least mentioned the bells of awakening) without the need to ask upon first talking to him. Maybe The crestfallen Warrior wasn’t there when Siegmeyer trekked through fire link? Maybe he didn’t know the solution to opening Sens Fortress cuz he didn’t ask the needed questions. Or more over, didn’t talk to the right people about it.
i always sorta assumed siegmeyer was meant to just be an old adventurer much past his prime and potentially suffering with some form of senility. sieglinde's got the same sort of frustration a person can feel about a parent suffering from alzheimers or dementia. hollowing in this case is siegmeyer losing himself to whatever illness, his daughter having to fight him since he's no longer the same person, the grief still there after he's died but the slightest amount of relief, "he won't be causing any more trouble".
Damn, that is horrible. I feel for people who have to helplessly witness it and bring up the strength every day to do their best and not let frustration get the better of them, as hard as it is though.
Damn that's interesting, goes with the theory Siegward was romantically involved with a fellow plotter (against the gods). She was without her husband for a while was she not?
I hate how hard & relatable this hits, whilst at the same time, love it. In my mind, Meyer knew of the plot, and has been trying to get to Ash Lake. Being left out tho, he has no idea where it is, and that's how we find him - still sitting and waiting outside of Sens. Also explains why his travelling pattern is erratic. He was near enough to it in Blighttown, and yet finds himself in Izalith due to not knowing about the illusory walls. It is only after Linde finds him, that she escorts him to Ash Lake, with the premise being the plot. However, once they arrive, there is nothing but ashes and the Deity's skull. Linde knew that her dad's purpose either was the plot, or finding her mother, and that he'd lose his sense of purpose. Might explain the "final" bit. So once he sees how late he truly is, and/or learns that his wife has been dead all this time? He goes hollow, and Linde does her duty, granting her old man the mercy he needed
It's honestly a little disturbing how much Siegmeyer reminds me of myself in some ways ; not someone who couldn't solve his problems, but someone who didn't even bother to try in earnest.
I always thought of Siegmeyer the same way as Don Quixote. An errant knight who has delusions of grandeur, is saved by the kindness of others (much to their chagrin), and has a family back home that constantly worries over them. He left on a journey because he was dissatisfied to only read about it, he had to live it. Yet, It was a fool's journey as he had to rely expertise and talent of others to get there. Though somehow still, he traveled to the furthest places and was a most memorable companion.
Thanks for making this video, it has made me reflect on myself. There are many parallels between this character and I. I don’t ask for help but many people have offered their help nonetheless, I do nothing most days and tell myself I’ll get to what I gotta do, but when I do start working on something, I dive in headfirst, and usually fail and then I fall back into a depression. This video, of all things about a video game I’m passionate about has taught me much. I do feel a sense of optimism after this video. I am currently telling myself I’ll change my ways, I do truly hope I feel this way when I awake in the morning. Whatever may happen in my future, i am glad you held up a mirror to my face, so thank you.
Damn, this hit me harder than a freight train, or any amount of therapy I had so far. I am a Siegmeyer too, booth in my inactiveness as well as the tools I left to gather dust and as I watch this video at 3 a.m. I need to get my shit together and little by little make progress by small good habits. If I ever get to have a dear little Lin in my life, all I want to is not to be a burden or a disappointment to her.

I feel like I've been living like a Siegmeyer for way too long and that the older I get, the harder it becomes to take action. It's not that I don't know what to do or how to do it, I'm just incapable of getting off my ass and I don't know why.
Have you considered a therapist? They do more then help with mental disabilitys yknow. Helping a person beat chronic procrastination seems right up their ally. Course, finding a therapist right for you will require trial and error, but thats what dark souls pushesat you. So i think you can succeed.

I'm really enjoying these didactic takes. The reason the first game is special to me is that while 2 and 3 tell fascinating stories in an ingenious and compelling way, the first game gives strong messages of personal encouragement. That sets any story apart from others.
How is it that this game is the ensemble of Philosophy? I have been rewatching Dark Soul's lore every couple of years, and every time I revisit this I am absolutely struck and dumbfounded by the Ideas and experiences I've missed just by being ignorant. The exact same feeling overwhelms me with each tidbit of philosophy I just so happen to come across in life. Truly good work you do hear Hawkshaw, I would have never come across these "epiphanies" had I not watched your videos all these years!

Damn this one hit me close to home, thank you for this. Ive always liked the Siegmeyer character in all his appearances throughout the games but this re contextualizes how i see and saw him. Truly excellent work and one of my new favorite Dark Souls videos. Long may the sun shine!

Another great, well thought out video. I'd just like to mention one thing I realized recently about your Anor Londo encounter with Siegmeyer. The window behind him is open, and it's actually directly above where you had to drop down after running from the archers and before the bonfire (you can see it clearly from the third floor balcony.) So he followed the same path as you and dealt with the archers, but then chose to clamber up instead of dropping down. This feat of athleticism did him no favors, as he ended up sandwiched between several silver knights instead of finding the bonfire. So instead of just trying to get somewhere that doesn't matter, it seems he took a wrong turn, decided, "welp, another brick wall," and set about to pondering instead of turning around and finding another way.
This has been a revaluation for me. Ive spent years working hard with the thought that it get better, that one day I'll be happy and get to doing what I want rather than what others tell me to do. I've worn myself down till I'm merely trudgeing from deadline to deadline and it's made me ill. Im going to learn from this, I'm no longer going to wait for my gate to open. Thank you
“Tricks of the mind” - pyromancer after mind controlling a undead into attacking his buddy, then playing it off after he’s done looting and the mind control wears off.
That at very at the end makes it better, in a silly, personal way. Because sometimes we just need to start and charge in, even recklessly, as Siegmeier did. But we also need means of maintaining that motivation, of keeping hope high. Because of that, mimicking the war cry makes a lot of sense.
If Siegmeyer is the thesis, Sieglinde is his antithesis, then Siegward would be the synthesis. It took him until the end of time, but he finally became his best self. Aww
@@THExRISER even the names are indicative of this, he is the Holder of Victory in name. Sieglinde is the soft victory, siegward is the Guardian of Victory. Of all three, only his implies no movement. He holds victory in his hands and does nothing.

Yeah guys this is me from the future (ooOOOoOOOO) and to be clear, it did actually helped me a lot trying my best at all things I did, for real, it drastically improved my life, but for the specific situation I was in, it was actually a matter of just not understanding of why I was unhappy, truth was, I was already doing my best but I simply didn't find joy in it. It's quite a different type of content. Vaati focuses moreso on presenting the lore nicely, in broad strokes, with some theorisation. This video is moreso a character analysis, about the meaning of the character, and the developer's intention.
15:17 As a Catarinian Knight Enthusiast, I believe that Siegmeyer is indeed a experienced knight, no doubt. But unfortunately, he lacks one crucial thing for someone of his stature, knowledge of the Bells of Awakening, or perhaps even the Undead Prophecy entirely. But, the man has valor and strength in wide swaths, so he clings to what makes his people renown across the land, that being merriment. If he would've started thinking like that, he would've been hollow far before we encountered him. Fast forward to Dark Souls 3's Siegward, you can see bits of Siegmeyer's personality in Siegward, but also the observant demeanor of Sieglinde, making me think that the beginning of their names, the "Sieg" part to be exact, is more like the surname. That may mean that Siegward is Sieglinde's child.
My mans just said that making all the way to the bottom of blightown is no big deal and barely two steps from where he was. He was in firelink he had to traverse quite a bit to get there
Siegmeyer is like a really buff dude watching his friend fight off the guys who were trying to beat him up earlier, and then praising his friend for doing his job.
Great video and thank you very much for your amazing work. I always thought of Siegmeyer showing the consequence of immortality. He has lost motivation to solve problems, since time will solve every obstacle for him. When chances are greater than 0, you just have to wait a finite amount of time for problems to be solved. "Sometimes you only have to give it some time". Eventually, a gate will crumble, a boulder will become a pebble and a swamp will dry out. In Anor Londo he is not waiting for five strangers, but calculating the bodies/lives/tries he has to spend, until he will manage to defeat five silver knights, weighing if it is worth it, or if he should simply wait. He is fully aware of his undead existence and all consequences of it, so he is pitying his mortal daughter. His daughter, in contrast, is using her one life to determinedly master every obstacle in her way. It also might be From mocking the player. After beating Dark Souls, I had this great sense of accomplishment. However, with infinite tries and enough time, everybody is able to beat this game. Something also Siegmeyer might realize at the end of his journey. He is no big adventurer, and sadly, me too wasn't that special defeating Gwyn after hours and hours of gameplay. Siegmeyer showed me a mirror: the tragedy of an undead character.

Watching this was better than morning coffee. This was what I needed. Thank you for creating such a rich perspective on this so well-liked character! It's so amazing to see the way the Dark Souls lore has expanded across the years. It really helps me to feel connected to others who share the perspective that I have as a lore-delver; That by putting so much of themselves into the efforts of the game we who are focused on delving into the story and details of the game's development we get a little closer to understanding the developers themselves. To me it just feels that as I'm playing games and my perception has developed, I can see certain things that developers try to connect with the player on in order to paint a picture, but I can't catch many of the deeper nuanced information on my own for plenty of reasons.
It interesting how we can ponder about one character so much, when he is not quite chatty, but only a few words are enough for examine of his nature, yes I enjoy this video very much, splendid work.
I've always seen a lot of myself in Siegmeyer. Now it really comes to alignment. How does one really change to a positive mindset? I don't really understand.
People can't answer that. Many can't put it into particular words, and for those who can, the answer is either too long or unfit for you. An example of the latter was DarkViperAU playing GTAGuessr with SomeOrdinaryGamers - because of their particular way of viewing and using the map, they knew different locations and reference points, and under a different light, so what one uses as landmark won't be known or understood by the other. But you'll come to understand. It's not one singular monolithic thing, but a general amalgam of a form specific to you. Atomic Habits, Power of Now, Positive Thinking (book by creator of cognitive distortion concept) are some book suggestions of you wanna look for a different way of seeing things, but the important bit is looking, anywhere, everywhere.
I definitely agree with you, this video really opened my eyes to how I need to adopt that positive mindset. But I havnt personally ran into any motivations to change or inspire me to change my mindset. I hope one day I get the clarity to help myself move forward.
Fantastic deep character analysis, for both the Siegs! Great video, everything you've been putting out recently has been so fresh. It's like the experience of my first watch of Vaati's stuff all over again.
I think the off screen death of Siegmeyer's wife is seriously overlooked. Especially, since his true suicide mission comes after he is told his wife's last words. I wonder if this whole time, Siegmeyer was running from having to face her death. It would explain a lot of things such as Sieglend's bit of frustration at him not staying still. I doubt she would be pleased by him running off at such a time, but of course understands his feelings and cares about him. It would also explain why he is always so lost in thought, as he always has her in the back of his mind. It's likely him realizing his limits adventuring with us, followed by him hearing those words and coming to terms with her death left him feeling ready to pass on and join her. At least that's how I always read it, since these games are totally up to interpretation.
The way to let him die in battle, in gallantry, is to let him die alongside you laying waste to the chaos eaters, paying his debts to you. Anything less is a bitter end and undeserving of him

Personally, I always took it that Siegmeyer was a patient man and WAS a great warrior. But he has gotten older and perhaps his mind and skills started to fade. This was compounded by the undead curse, and he began to fade more and more.
His quest is to prove he is the man he used to be.
I think he is in the process of hollowing even by the time we meet him. He's essentially a once great adventurer with dementia, going on one last quest before he no longer can.

I've been feeling like a Siegmeyer myself for a long while now, even though you were talking about a fictional character, what you were saying really resonated with me as a person, like you were speaking directly to me when explaining siegmeyers behaviors and mindset, and really gave me a perspective on the way I have been the past 12 months, thank you for this, I see now what I must do to pull myself out of this rut. Seriously though modding DS1 to have quests like DS3 and having Siegmeyer grow with each encounter with your character so he becomes stronger would be cool. You summon him in BoC and he acts as a distraction for the tentacles and once you destroy the 2nd bug he makes the leap over to the 3rd one and charges through all the brambles and one-shots it with a cleave would be awesome.
It also allows you to extend the plot by finding him and his daughter fighting in Ash Lake (as Siegmeyer is now a badass) and having the choice of who to side with (of course it would be nice to add more Sieglinde content).
Would need to find some good impersonators to record audio which would be a pain but the idea of these lore ideas becoming mods and getting mods like, The Plot Against The Gods, would be pretty cool.
It wouldn't matter much as the BoC is the second worst designed boss/boss arena in the game, with Capra Demon being the worst

i think everyone likes Siegmeyer for more than just his charm, though i can only speak for myself. we like his personality, his speech, but perhaps we also resonate with "being in a pickle" and telling ourselves that "we'll think of something, you'll see!"
our goals are blurry, solutions to our problems are half-cocked, our present is waiting for solutions and opportunities to come to us, our futures are more of the same unless someone knocks us out of it or we change ourselves in some way.

I always saw Siegmyer as the guy who aspired to be more than he could handle. He seemed to be that guy who spends his life savings to try and fulfill his dream, even when his family tries to tell him it isn't realistic, but he just doesn't have the capability to make it come true. He seemed a good man who's head was in the clouds, ignoring how his choices have hurt those around him.
That "peaked in high school" bro, who is hard working, but keeps trying to peddle MLM schemes, or borrow money to start overly ambitious businesses he has no experience in.
I think he had grand aspirations and would tell his daughter stories of adventuring. So as she grew she became an adventurer, and that overshadows her father's stories. So he felt he needed to prove he was an adventurer as he didn't want his daughter to view him as less than her. She knows he feels this way, which is why she so desperately wants us to get him to stop. Because she knows he isn't as capable as her, but she still adores him anyways.

Great video. His choice to create his own obstacles is his most defining trait, behind his own warmth. The conspiracy behind the gods subplot is so unfinished a thought that I tend to not apply it to much of anything. In my mind, they end up in Ash Lake because this is a place his daughter knew there was a bonfire but no one for her father to harm - it's the one place that she could safely kill her father over and over again as his body reformed to ensure that his hollowing would complete safely and as rapidly as possible while endangering no one. Siegmeyer was a flawed by likeable person; his daughter may be the biggest badass in the series.
Wow. Over the course of this video, she has totally become my favorite character. A dedicated, intelligent, professional woman, and she isn't even undead! She's amazing!

There isn't any plot unfinished in Dark Souls and Sieglinde is a piece of shit and I kill her everytime I see her. What trouble could Siegmeyer be sleeping standing up for centuries like a log somewhere. The only thing that makes sense is that he's a deserter and it's her duty as a family member to end him. A knight takes a oath to the crown so wtf is he doing in Lordran having his own adventures instead of in Catarina serving his country. What a selfish asshole I'm glad she kills that jackass.

An excellent analysis of my favorite Dark Souls character, though I will say one thing about his death at Sieglinde's hands: while the plot against the gods certainly sounds feasible when you put it as you have, I think the much more simpler, obvious possibility is the real truth: Siegmeyer's "final" adventure is because after having been saved by you in Izalith, he's had his epiphany. He is undead, his time is limited, as hollowing comes for all eventually. He's made amends with Sieglinde, and so he sets off, not expecting to be seen again.
Sieglinde's words at his death are those of a mourning daughter. The "trouble" he caused was his needs for assistance from the player character. The reason it's over, is because he has gone hollow, and has been put to rest. This chapter in the book of Sieglinde's life has been completed. She came to Lordran for her father, and with him gone, she has nothing to stay for. She is not undead. She can't link the Fire. She returns to the world of the living, to her home, to live the rest of her life.
As for how or why Siegmeyer goes hollow, I certainly don't think it is because Sieglinde killed him over and over again until he went mad. Such a fate I think is too cruelly out of character for Sieglinde. I think it just came with being his "final adventure". You gave him his epiphany, but he still had no direction. He sets out aimlessly, and wanders to the farthest reaches of the world. Ash Lake is not easy to reach, it is an exhausting journey. He in all likelyhood laid here to rest, as he often did, only to never awake again as himself.
she called it his final adventure because she knew that getting to ash lake would be both a great feat and a moment of closure with his family, and finding those two things he's been seeking would remove what little purpose he had left. she didnt stop him and only put him out of his misery after he hollowed because it was inevitable for him to end up like that, and quite frankly it's a better fate than if he had hollowed waiting for a damn gate to open
why would he go hollow from getting exhausted, hollowing doesn't come the same death does to an old man on his last hike. if adventuring is his life then how would an adventure to a mystical underground lake make him lose his purpose???

honestly i watched this vid on shrooms this morning before online classes and i truly felt that.
my interpretation is that sieglinde knew her father well enough to figure that finding out everything that happened while he wasnt looking would be enough to make him go hollow, and thought it would be a fitting end to send him off while giving him a closure that he very much needed, despite not being able to handle it. rather than making him go hollow by killing him until he gives up, she made him go hollow by giving him the harshest reality check in the history of mankind and then took him out after he went hollow
Even Hawkshaw will struggle to convince me Seigmeyer has any negative character traits.
He’s that loveable oaf that bumbles his way through the land. Probably waving at the snakemen in Sens Fortress, taking selfies with the Silver Knights, making merry with gwyndolin. Ya know. The usual.

As a dad this is a constant struggle. Considering this video in light of all fat boys flaws and ineptitude in being a Knight and adventures she went on to be one hardcore little lady. If your trying to be better you are on the right path, you will never know till they have developed and become who you helped them to be. The best way to know your doing a good job is how others perceive your child, parents evening is always a good chance. If they are a joy to teach you then all is good
I would like to oppose this characterization with a few facts and theories of mine:
First things first, Siegmayer has the Catarina armor, an armor set only given to knights in Catarina who have proven themselves in the battlefield. Would a man, who is just indecisive and actually does nothing himself, ever get such meritorious deed worthy of being bestowed this armor? Doubtfull.
Also, his comment of his head spinning is actually pretty valid. Remember his armor is a giant metal ball. Even if you ignore the fact he could easily dislocate or outright shatter his neck while rolling with that kind of helmet on, just being disoriented while wearing a helmet that blocks 80% of his vision in a literal death house full of traps and enemies is a death sentence. And removing the armor in a dangerous place such as this is a bad idea. Would you tell soldiers deployed in Afghanistan to remove their helmet or bulletproof vest to run faster in enemy territory?
As for Anor Londo... Siegmayer is supposed to have scaled in throught window that is open right behind him. So he didn't clear *any* knight to get there, so he cannot just backtrack throught the window and both the stairs and the room are blocked by enemies. No way back, and it's dangerous to go forth because he has no idea of 'how' strong the knights are, just that they 'are' strong.
The bit about Siegmayer not helping you back is also false. He gives you the little being's ring, which you can otherwise only get as a starting gift, and a unique offensive miracle. He does repay you, just not physically. Do bodyguards expect their payment to be their clients to stand up to physically protect them in return?
As for Sieglind, while Siegmayer seems to love her, and she does so too, she already killed her father once. We do not know the circumstances behind that, but Siegmayer clearly doesn't hold a grudge. But, as you said, Siegmayer wasn't there when his wife died. Why? That fact is so simple, and you mention it a couple of times in your video without realizing it and making the connection: Siegmayer... is an *undead*. What is ghe treatment of undead in that world? Shoved in an asylum until they rot. Wouldn't that explain why Siegmayer, a recognized knight of Catarina, is free to roam away from his country and yet missed his wife's death? Because he had to leave. And his daughter is probably burdened by the fact that her father, once a recognized knight of Catarina is running around as another undead, looking for trouble and adventure and "causing trouble". That aggro dialogue of Sieglind shlws she has sone hate for the undead, especially those who lose their mind.
Finally, Siegmayer isn't a coward, someone who uses others for his own advantage and doesn't repay them. And he proves that by willingly casting himself on a pit of dangerous monsters to help us go past them, throwing away what little is left of his life and his mind on the wind in order to repay the kindness we have shown him. This also goes against what you said about Siegmayer lying about the moss. Remember, it takes one poison moss to get to Quelaag's lair from his spot, and one to get to the wheel elevator.... or to the Ash Lake. I really don't know why you didn't mention him willingly *trying* to return the favour of you killing the knights in Anor Londo by being the one to step up this time, knowing that he would die. But that *is* a huge oversight.
In the end Siegmayer was a jolly, happy go lucky knight who wanted to go adventuring once his life as a knight and as a human ended, but he found himself being overpowered by the reality and actual logistics of said adventuring. Not a delusional manipulator, nor some fool who was slaughtered by some terrorist/rebel wannabe daughter because he wouldn't be able to keep a secret. Which makes little sense, as it would actually be better for Sieglind to not tell him anything, which would have kept Ash Lake and Siegmayer apart.
All these videos read way too much into the characters and stretch to ascribe aspects to them that I don't think exist, I think the Dark Souls characters are honestly quite straightforward and simple, and were always intended to be.
I've watched a few of these videos and I find it hard to pay them any credence, I think people just love "the dark secrets behind your favourite characters 😳😳🤪😢" shit despite the fact it's generally reaching.

@@bluegum6438 some of them seem like really well thought out deep analysis that makes sense like the ash lake video but then others feel like complete stretches that don’t work. It’s seems like an attempt to deeply analysis everything when only certain aspects can be analyzed in such a way.
I once had the exact mentality and it was this game series that allowed me to overcome that. His story also tells me that if you stick around long enough you will find something that will give you the courage to put you life one the line. And often it is the influence of a "hero" who showed you that it is possible.
It's a surprisingly common mentality among the Souls playerbase itself (just wait around and summon other people to do everything for you), which also results in a noticeable chunk of said playerbase faltering super hard when they can't do that. There's a massive difference between them and the players who actually do everything themselves and are brave enough to take risks while making calculations on the fly regarding how to bypass certain hurdles. And you always know who is in which of these categories if you either co-op or invade just with a few moments of watching how the host behaves (cower away or boldly participate in the front line). And Siegmeyer shows that those waiters aren't really bad people, but just have let their fear of losing take over their actions in a way that's hurting themselves more so than anything else.

I feel this in a very intimate way. I just got out of a nine year relationship and it was emotionally abusive for me but there is definitely an element of me becoming attached and comfortable and lazy. I got comfortable in the emotional neglect and was on the verge of marrying into this life. More or less resigning myself to this as there was nothing more for me to strive to.

In the end, just like an onion, Siegmeyer has layers.
My guess is that he's heavily influenced by Don Quixote.
Chances are that he was an elderly nobleman, possibly with a knighthood, but dramatically out of practice, obsessed with stories of the chivalrous knights of Gwyn and in the shadow of heroes like his daughter.
I would guess that becoming undead reinvigorated him because of the prophecy of the chosen one linking the first flame. Learning about what happened to his wife likely completely destroys both his faith in the gods and his spirit.
That replication of his war cry at the end was amazing thank you for adding that.
I genuinely believe that Siegward and Siegmeyer are narcoleptics, which is cool because it's played for laughs and doesn't get explicitly mentioned (it would probably be viewed more like a curse than a disease) - it makes their accomplishments in climbing and combat feel more epic, knowing they have to deal with chronic fatigue and tiredness.
Many narcoleptics try to manage the illness by taking frequent naps.
Edit: Just watched through to the end, this might be your best video yet - the theory makes perfect sense.
I viewed his frequent naps and lapses of attention as nearly going hollow.
Hollows always seem to be very relaxed when left alone and they don't seem to get attacked by other enemies.

Siegmeyer is a badass hero in my mind who just gets stuck every now and then and we all need that sometimes. This guy is strong enough to make it inside Anor Londo's rooftop archers past the mirror guardians, he fought his way through blight town & the great swamp, he braved and slew the same demons & past the same lava in the ruins you did. If only you could talk to Sigmeyer that you want to cooperate with him as an adventuring party he would have never hollowed because he'd see his efforts as just as impressive because you did it together.

Maybe The crestfallen Warrior wasn’t there when Siegmeyer trekked through fire link?
Maybe he didn’t know the solution to opening Sens Fortress cuz he didn’t ask the needed questions. Or more over, didn’t talk to the right people about it.
i always sorta assumed siegmeyer was meant to just be an old adventurer much past his prime and potentially suffering with some form of senility. sieglinde's got the same sort of frustration a person can feel about a parent suffering from alzheimers or dementia. hollowing in this case is siegmeyer losing himself to whatever illness, his daughter having to fight him since he's no longer the same person, the grief still there after he's died but the slightest amount of relief, "he won't be causing any more trouble".

I hate how hard & relatable this hits, whilst at the same time, love it.
In my mind, Meyer knew of the plot, and has been trying to get to Ash Lake. Being left out tho, he has no idea where it is, and that's how we find him - still sitting and waiting outside of Sens. Also explains why his travelling pattern is erratic. He was near enough to it in Blighttown, and yet finds himself in Izalith due to not knowing about the illusory walls.
It is only after Linde finds him, that she escorts him to Ash Lake, with the premise being the plot. However, once they arrive, there is nothing but ashes and the Deity's skull. Linde knew that her dad's purpose either was the plot, or finding her mother, and that he'd lose his sense of purpose. Might explain the "final" bit. So once he sees how late he truly is, and/or learns that his wife has been dead all this time? He goes hollow, and Linde does her duty, granting her old man the mercy he needed

Onion knight is pretty much me. I've wasted my life in indolence and lethargy, hoping for others to bail me out. This one hits right in the feels.
I always thought of Siegmeyer the same way as Don Quixote. An errant knight who has delusions of grandeur, is saved by the kindness of others (much to their chagrin), and has a family back home that constantly worries over them.
He left on a journey because he was dissatisfied to only read about it, he had to live it. Yet, It was a fool's journey as he had to rely expertise and talent of others to get there. Though somehow still, he traveled to the furthest places and was a most memorable companion.
Thanks for making this video, it has made me reflect on myself. There are many parallels between this character and I. I don’t ask for help but many people have offered their help nonetheless, I do nothing most days and tell myself I’ll get to what I gotta do, but when I do start working on something, I dive in headfirst, and usually fail and then I fall back into a depression. This video, of all things about a video game I’m passionate about has taught me much. I do feel a sense of optimism after this video. I am currently telling myself I’ll change my ways, I do truly hope I feel this way when I awake in the morning. Whatever may happen in my future, i am glad you held up a mirror to my face, so thank you.

I am a Siegmeyer too, booth in my inactiveness as well as the tools I left to gather dust and as I watch this video at 3 a.m. I need to get my shit together and little by little make progress by small good habits. I feel like I've been living like a Siegmeyer for way too long and that the older I get, the harder it becomes to take action.
It's not that I don't know what to do or how to do it, I'm just incapable of getting off my ass and I don't know why.
Have you considered a therapist? They do more then help with mental disabilitys yknow. Helping a person beat chronic procrastination seems right up their ally.
Course, finding a therapist right for you will require trial and error, but thats what dark souls pushesat you. So i think you can succeed.

I'm really enjoying these didactic takes. The reason the first game is special to me is that while 2 and 3 tell fascinating stories in an ingenious and compelling way, the first game gives strong messages of personal encouragement. That sets any story apart from others.
How is it that this game is the ensemble of Philosophy? I have been rewatching Dark Soul's lore every couple of years, and every time I revisit this I am absolutely struck and dumbfounded by the Ideas and experiences I've missed just by being ignorant. The exact same feeling overwhelms me with each tidbit of philosophy I just so happen to come across in life. Truly good work you do hear Hawkshaw, I would have never come across these "epiphanies" had I not watched your videos all these years!

Another great, well thought out video. I'd just like to mention one thing I realized recently about your Anor Londo encounter with Siegmeyer. The window behind him is open, and it's actually directly above where you had to drop down after running from the archers and before the bonfire (you can see it clearly from the third floor balcony.) So he followed the same path as you and dealt with the archers, but then chose to clamber up instead of dropping down. This feat of athleticism did him no favors, as he ended up sandwiched between several silver knights instead of finding the bonfire. So instead of just trying to get somewhere that doesn't matter, it seems he took a wrong turn, decided, "welp, another brick wall," and set about to pondering instead of turning around and finding another way.
I was so not ready for this revelation of Siegmeyers character, but even more so to hear the Undella Town theme after so many years, wonderous content

- pyromancer after mind controlling a undead into attacking his buddy, then playing it off after he’s done looting and the mind control wears off.
That at very at the end makes it better, in a silly, personal way. Because sometimes we just need to start and charge in, even recklessly, as Siegmeier did. But we also need means of maintaining that motivation, of keeping hope high. Because of that, mimicking the war cry makes a lot of sense.
If Siegmeyer is the thesis, Sieglinde is his antithesis, then Siegward would be the synthesis. It took him until the end of time, but he finally became his best self.

Yeah guys this is me from the future (ooOOOoOOOO) and to be clear, it did actually helped me a lot trying my best at all things I did, for real, it drastically improved my life, but for the specific situation I was in, it was actually a matter of just not understanding of why I was unhappy, truth was, I was already doing my best but I simply didn't find joy in it. I was very stressed about disapointing people I loved, when in reality all I needed to do was talk about it.

I’ve always like his work better. Vaati is good for the basic surface level lore information hawkshaw digs deeper.
It's quite a different type of content. Vaati focuses moreso on presenting the lore nicely, in broad strokes, with some theorisation. This video is moreso a character analysis, about the meaning of the character, and the developer's intention.
15:17 As a Catarinian Knight Enthusiast, I believe that Siegmeyer is indeed a experienced knight, no doubt. But unfortunately, he lacks one crucial thing for someone of his stature, knowledge of the Bells of Awakening, or perhaps even the Undead Prophecy entirely. But, the man has valor and strength in wide swaths, so he clings to what makes his people renown across the land, that being merriment. If he would've started thinking like that, he would've been hollow far before we encountered him. Fast forward to Dark Souls 3's Siegward, you can see bits of Siegmeyer's personality in Siegward, but also the observant demeanor of Sieglinde, making me think that the beginning of their names, the "Sieg" part to be exact, is more like the surname. That may mean that Siegward is Sieglinde's child.

Great video and thank you very much for your amazing work. I always thought of Siegmeyer showing the consequence of immortality. He has lost motivation to solve problems, since time will solve every obstacle for him. When chances are greater than 0, you just have to wait a finite amount of time for problems to be solved. "Sometimes you only have to give it some time". Eventually, a gate will crumble, a boulder will become a pebble and a swamp will dry out. In Anor Londo he is not waiting for five strangers, but calculating the bodies/lives/tries he has to spend, until he will manage to defeat five silver knights, weighing if it is worth it, or if he should simply wait. He is fully aware of his undead existence and all consequences of it, so he is pitying his mortal daughter. His daughter, in contrast, is using her one life to determinedly master every obstacle in her way.
It also might be From mocking the player. After beating Dark Souls, I had this great sense of accomplishment. However, with infinite tries and enough time, everybody is able to beat this game. Something also Siegmeyer might realize at the end of his journey. He is no big adventurer, and sadly, me too wasn't that special defeating Gwyn after hours and hours of gameplay. Siegmeyer showed me a mirror: the tragedy of an undead character.

As someone who struggles with motivation, Siegmeyer is very relatable.
Watching this was better than morning coffee. This was what I needed. Thank you for creating such a rich perspective on this so well-liked character! It's so amazing to see the way the Dark Souls lore has expanded across the years. It really helps me to feel connected to others who share the perspective that I have as a lore-delver; That by putting so much of themselves into the efforts of the game we who are focused on delving into the story and details of the game's development we get a little closer to understanding the developers themselves. To me it just feels that as I'm playing games and my perception has developed, I can see certain things that developers try to connect with the player on in order to paint a picture, but I can't catch many of the deeper nuanced information on my own for plenty of reasons.

I definitely agree with you, this video really opened my eyes to how I need to adopt that positive mindset. But I havnt personally ran into any motivations to change or inspire me to change my mindset.

Fantastic deep character analysis, for both the Siegs! Great video, everything you've been putting out recently has been so fresh. It's like the experience of my first watch of Vaati's stuff all over again.
I think the off screen death of Siegmeyer's wife is seriously overlooked. Especially, since his true suicide mission comes after he is told his wife's last words. I wonder if this whole time, Siegmeyer was running from having to face her death. It would explain a lot of things such as Sieglend's bit of frustration at him not staying still. I doubt she would be pleased by him running off at such a time, but of course understands his feelings and cares about him. It would also explain why he is always so lost in thought, as he always has her in the back of his mind. It's likely him realizing his limits adventuring with us, followed by him hearing those words and coming to terms with her death left him feeling ready to pass on and join her. At least that's how I always read it, since these games are totally up to interpretation.
