During my army service, we did many "hikes." Nobody told us how far or how long it would be. Because we're grunts, we don't need to know. A hike would mean anything from a quick run around the block to weeks of cross country skiing in the forest in -20C weather.
But here's the thing: while we didn't know anything, the army knew everything. We had plenty of water for everyone, plenty of clothing, plenty of food, plenty of everything, and before leaving we were given explicit instructions about the gear required. Because while it's my responsibility to shut up and keep moving, it's the army's responsibility to keep me alive. Our hikes weren't easy, even with excellent equipment.
So I feel I have some authority in judging these "level 2 hikes" she's talking about. What she did was incredibly irresponsible and dangerous. The way they're condescending and arrogantly downplaying endangering other people's lives and even causing severe physical harm is disgusting and disturbing. I hope these people get locked up for the harm they're causing.

From what it sounds like from her own words, she didn't have ANY sort of emergency plan. "Is there 911 in Columbia?" If you won't let people prepare, the responsibility is on you to ensure the safety of everyone on that trip. She told them "conserve water" while she knew she brought more than enough for herself because "yall don't want to see me dehydrated" okay, sure.... what about the rest of your team who didn't have the privilege of information? Hypocrisy is actually dangerous in this case.

You absolutely cannot tell how healthy someone is by how they look and that is incredibly ableist to say. In my 20's I was the skinniest I have ever been (5'7, 135-150) and I looked great on the outside, but I was a drug addict and was not healthy on the inside. Now I'm 36, clean and sober for over 6 years, and I'm at the heaviest weight I've ever been (over 200), but I'm also the healthiest I've ever been. I take care of my physical health now and go to the doctors regularly for lab work. The outsides do not always give a clear picture of the inside. Sure I could do some crazy things to lose weight but that would take away from all of the work I've done on my mental and emotional health, as well as my physical health that doesn't involve weight. As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder, has multiple mental health conditions, and has tried to unalive themselves before, I would rather be overweight and happy than skinny and miserable.

They made such a big deal about the candy bar and I thought that type 1 diabetes meant that you need insulin to level blood sugar, so a candy bar would have raised her blood sugar even more right? Or does the blood sugar teeter so that sometimes you need insulin for high blood sugar but if it dips too low you need sugar? Thanks and sorry if that's a dumb question but there's been so much talk about the woman and the candy bar.

    • @arlenecargill9883

Yes that's right Elizabeth. It should not go below 4 or above 14. If it's low then you need sugar to raise it. A small candy bar or a few jelly babies work but there are products made specifically for that. The more exercise you do, the more sugar you can tolerate and if it's too high, you can bring it down by walking around.
JLW obviously knows nothing about diabetes.

@@Lizzypoohxo Yes. Diabetics, especially type 1, can have volatile blood sugar and can absolutely go too low. It is affected by everything like how much insulin you've taken, physical activity, stress, how long its been since you ate, ect. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is incredibly dangerous and most people I know with diabetes keep some form of sugar on hand, whether it be glucose tablets, soda, or candy to use in an emergency. My cousin is type 1 and had a continuous glucose monitor that will alarm her and my father (she lives with us) that she has gone low. She has almost died several times and my dad has had to go in to wake her up and get her some form of sugar. Theres ever parameters you follow for how much to take and how long you should wait before you test your sugar again to see if you need to take more. It would be normal for this woman to have a candy bar. Maybe she was feeling low on the way there or took it before the "hike" because working out is known to lower blood sugar.

“We set the stage right.” NO. YOU DIDN’T. I’m a person who would have LOVED an excursion like this IF I had been mentally prepared for what to expect. Preparing for a 2 hour hike and being faced with something 8x that long would have messed me up. If only because I would have been so ANGRY that it would have ruined the experience.

    • @Lizzypoohxo
      @Lizzypoohxo Рік тому +15

The mental preparedness is huge for me! I live close to a creek and then further up is one of the tallest waterfalls in California. I prepare a little differently depending on which one I go to. If I'm going to the waterfall I wear my hiking boots, if I'm splashing around in the creek I wear my tennis shoes for example.
If I go to work knowing I'm going to have a 12 hour shift, I don't really mind it. If I'm scheduled for a 6 hour shift and have plans after work, I will probably be upset when I am told I need to work a 10 hour shift. The physical is hard to prep for if you don't know what you're getting into, but then add the mental aspect and that kicks it up a notch

Sometimes it’s a matter of logistics (especially if you are expected to bring your own supplies), but sometimes you just need some time to mentally run through the plan and ground yourself. Also, if a surprise activity is dropped on me, I feel like I don’t have the option to say no, which means I’m going to resent having to do it even if I might otherwise enjoy the activity.

@@cousindexter i think a lot of it but because she was also working on loosing weight, she thought she found a way that worked maybe. Under any other circumstances I think she would have checked it sooner. Also she said she passed blood cloths for four months and didn't bother to go to doctor.
I actually wonder if ketones had a link in her having the cancer being so agressive?

And actually makes it worse. Cause apparently, they flagged down some rando who was on a motorcycle and had him take the woman to the next destination. They didn't get her medical help. 🤦

It’s really cringe.- ETA I’m just curious… do Mateo and Sasha live with her? They’re always there. Also, if these orders are all from her, what do they get out of it? Do either of them go live on their own socials?

I can say 100% that a “walk” in Dallas is different than in Columbia. Even a “walk” in West Texas is different than North Central Texas. I’ve walked, hiked and climbed in the US and other beautiful countries. However I KNEW what I was getting into. I’m not in the best shape but I was able to prepare for the trips and I took more than 90 days to prepare. Informed consent is a thing…an important thing!!

Terrain and weather makes suuuuch a huge difference! Even if a person works out everyday it doesn’t mean they’ll be able to hike hilly terrain. When I was in Colombia, I went up La Piedra del Peñol. At the time I was playing volleyball for my college and worked out nearly everyday…and I was dyinggg by the time I got to the top of the rock. In order to train for that I would’ve focused on climbing. It’s annoying that JLW is pretending like working out for 90 days equates to the level of fitness she surprised her group with.

My husband is T1D and it would be so dangerous for him to not know that he would be going for 15 mile hike. I truly can’t believe they are trying to make it seem like it was fine and nothing was dangerous, diabetes is not something to play around with.
Edit: also I don’t know if the person is type 1 or 2 but it would be an issue with type 1 because physical activity makes them need more carbohydrates/sugary snacks.

You can have a cooler for 2hrs but 15 hours?! Idk.
Do you have any Informationen what diabetics need to do when having insulin on them during hikes?

I live in a chronic state of fear of being misunderstood. Goes back to my childhood of people just getting too tired of me or too worn out of listening to me that they just don't let me finish, so I just provide WAY too much information all at once just in case I get cut off or sent away. It's impossible to write comments that aren't huge paragraphs with editing after I've read it 2x. I live in FEAR of something like this where, if it IS a normal, perfectly safe, totally clear cut excursion that would have been fine for EVERYONE and no one could have problems with, but she just told the story really shit and didn't provide enough context and her exaggerations for effect were taken as fact. The difference is, in my opinion, the defensiveness. The WAY she goes about the second video. "this was out of context, I never meant THIS, I didn't say THAT!" she's so used to being attacked (questioned) she can't just explain "I left out some stuff, or I didn't remember this right, or I was joking here" it's just from 0 to 100 of "it's everyone misinterpreting my words cos they hate me!!!"

Oh my god I wear contacts that I can’t sleep in, and it just hit me that if I thought I was going on a day hike, there is a good chance I wouldn’t think to bring glasses or my lens case etc. since I can wear my contacts comfortably for up to like 15 hours. So if I had to suddenly camp out overnight, I would either have to throw out my lenses and have compromised distance vision the next day (i.e. everything beyond 1 foot in front of my face is blurry) or risk eye damage by sleeping in them. Yet another reason not to spring a surprise overnight on someone!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s clear this woman does not account for anyone with any type of medical condition or disability.

I’m reminded of The Office when Michael accidentally outs Stanley’s affair, so he starts making up rumors about everyone else to obscure the truth. And he’s all like “these rumors are crazy! Maybe we shouldn’t believe any of them.” And then the rest of the office is like, “Michael, we heard all of them from you.”
