The MLM companies is only if you are there from the very start. Heard about that on the show about Lululemon story and The only thing was in my cul-de-sac we all took turns having parties. We had fun but since a lot of us have the same friends it wouldn’t work. I have an Uncle and Aunt that did Amway but he had a ton of people under him. He was in the Air Force. He wasn’t pushy but he had some extra money that he saved. Most people though have the same friend group. My family doesn’t live here so I don’t have a lot of extra people to invite. Most of my old friends live out of time. I also am a nurse and worked like 1-2 days a week. I really didn’t want to go to in the evening. I have 4 kids and 2 dogs and a husband. Just wanted to get of my feet. Congratulations on the baby, I worked L&D for years and now work in a specialty office, Maternal/Fetal medicine. I can talk about that and really know it well. I feel like most of those parties have everyone knows what so take a catalog , ask me questions and get what you want. Literally we must have had 10 people have the same party. She gave the same speech I was like yes I know from 3 weeks ago. The one that was the best was Tupperware. My Mama had like a pitcher from 40 years ago that was cracking and they gave her a brand new one. They are expensive though, and my 4 kids would have destroyed them. He was very good about explaining it to her but she really believes in it. The other thing is any profits you also have to have a good supply on hand as well. I would have referred to that one on Lulumon (?). They had a pretty in-depth discussion with all the people down the chain.

I think part of why his example didn’t work is because in her eyes she’s already made it into the equivalent of the “nfl” for the mlm. She was experiencing some success from it and had reached the level of getting the trips and the car. So for her it was more like I already made it to the nfl I just need to train harder to get back in. I already succeeded where 99+% failed and I can get back to that level if I just go harder. Meanwhile she’s brainwashed and pushed by her up lines to continue thinking this way. She’s too far gone. It’s extremely sad. Edit: plus I don’t think she really sees it as scamming. She saw it as if we all work hard we can all get to that level. At least from what she was saying I don’t think she realized it was scamming.

I have a "friend" (old acquaintance) who said Avon saved her life & was trying to sell to me even though I told her I would never buy from an MLM & it wasn't personal. She and I both have chronic health issues & she recently left her partner because he became abusive. She said "I hope one day you know what it's like for that to happen so you can understand." That's messed up. Literally wishing abuse on someone. Over AVON. The kicker is she's a close friend of my ex who horrifically abused me for a decade. And that last part is not a secret.
This brainwashing MLM bullshit is so insidious & disgusting. Much like my ex/her buddy.
ETA: Before she joined Avon, she started a small skin care business where she'd curate boxes for people (cute idea!) I was her first (& only) customer. This was a solid year before the pandemic. She still hasn't sent the box to me (4 years later) because she can't afford *the shipping.* Hm. I thought Avon was paying her so well it was life-changing...

The worst part of MLMs is the "cringe sob story". They capitalize on misfortune. There's nothing wrong with self improvement, but how does coming from a sad "blended family" create a fun buying experience for people? And if her mother is there, now you're publicly guilting and or shaming your mother for having a blended family! I am so glad Ramit called MLMs out for the money scams they are.

Yes, they prey on moms with young children! It’s disgusting to me. 20 years ago, they did this to me with Mary Kay. I won all these prizes because I was buying products to sell. I was not MAKING money. I put our family 9,000 in debt trying to “help” my husband out of guilt from staying at home with my babies. My sweet hubby said “please don’t keep trying to help me, you are hurting us. So, long story short, I got out, ended up with a bunch of products that I basically gave away, then threw away. We ended up, going down to one car, paying my debt off slowly, eating only home cooked meals, living a very simple life. And finally, I could actually enjoy my babies and eventually home educating all 5 of them and now they are grown, I’m helping a single mom by home educating her 2 little ones. The simple life is the content life. ❤

I watched a sappy Christmas movie a couple of years ago and all i get are romance suggestions along with trash reality because i watched love is blind. I only find the good stuff because i Google things like top Netflix documentaries or series, etc. UA-cam, Hulu, etc all figure out what i like much better. The other night i watched the longest third date, which i did really enjoy, knowing i had just further wrecked my suggestions. There is almost nothing humans find more difficult than admitting they made a mistake or that they were wrong. Noone wants to hear it or be told «I told you so!» and we go very very far just sticking our heads in the sand just to not have to admit it. The sunk-cost-falicy is really really difficult to get over. Also I think a lot of us are brought up that making mistakes and failing is bad and we should be embarrassed about it instead that there is no shame in making mistakes and that you only have to learn from your mistakes and that is okay. But many of us keep going and going all in in the hope of the eventual impossible pay off until it litterally comes down on our heads and we get homeless with nothing to eat and nowhere to go and everyone has left us. Then we cry in regret. I wonder what happened to this girl now that Monat has gone over to direct sales model instead of recruiting 🤔

The write off part reminds me of that scene in Schitt's Creek lolol except more sad in these cases bc the ppl aren't rich. A write off from my understanding literally just means you don't pay taxes on that portion of income, it's just a deduction of what you're being taxed on. So, less than 25%(tax brackets, location, joint vs individual, blah, blah) of the cost of the phone could even be close to considered "earning" anything. Like, write offs aren't an excuse to just buy things. Theoretically, say you deducted your income down to 0 from business expenses...cool, you don't have to pay taxes but, you spent all your money.
