    I have a hunter model and in 3 seasons it's all you need. Poncho, emergency shelter, sleeping bag or insulated cove in my hammock. Yes they are expensive but I've had mine 6 years and never had a rip, tear or leak. I can recommend it highly. The just came out with a jacket also!

      spudrubble my thoughts exactly, I gave the comment a thumbs down and started to say that you have never been ou t in the cold ,but didn't want to start a shit storm on this awesome site . There are a lot of faceless cowards out there who feel empowered sitting at home in mom and dad's basement. Hell, even the military mittens have a spot for wiping your nose in the cold .I highly enjoy this channel and took the comment personal .

    Jerven and Helsport are two norwegian producers that both make this kind of ponchotarp - PT. They both produce a variety of models from the simple unlined model to medium and heavy lined models to a high-end model with "zip-in" lining. Jerven makes most model in mountain and forrest camo and some models in snow and dessert camo. The model Lars is showing is the original vindsekk (Wind Sack) from Jerven. It is made as an wind- and waterproof garment for when the hunter is sitting on post doubling as camouflage. This original model has "issues" with condensation that can be dealt with by adding an UCO lantern etc. I like the medium lined Hunter model from Jerven the best. I have the short Hunter model. It packs up quite descent and is not to heavy. On its own it is a ponchotarp and a survivalbag. It is only a sleepingbag during the summermonths. In the rest of the year it will do as a ground cover and/or reinforcemrnt of another sleeping unit. It will take more abuse than your average sleeping bag but this is not anything like canvas or cotton. It can be repaired though.

    You make a good point when you speak about the benefits of canvas. It's been
    tested for ages. Yes, you will save weight with synthetics. From a military perspective, the lighter the load the quicker the soldier. I can see the Norwegian cover being very good for a blind, rough cover, or stand where you will be stationary for hours. To stay warm, activate a few hand warmers and you're good to go. It's good when you can't make a fire, just use a small stove to heat water etc...

      William Branstetter - Sorry my text didn't make the attached link above. As Master Tracker mentioned, the Jon E warmer is a slow combustion device that has been around for almost a century designed to provide ambient heat inside clothing. Be cautious however, since they can get extremely warm. They've staved off frost bite for many a soul caught in extreme cold conditions.

    It was most likely designed as a kind of one man tent to sit in while waiting for reindeer when hunting in the flat open mountain areas of southern Norway (Hardangervidda). The pattern shown is just perfect for that area.

    I have an insulated Jerven Fjellduk which i've been using for quite some time.
    Not only used as a poncho but also as a tarp, sleeping bag, tent and hammock.
    My favourite configuration is to hang it on a rope between two trees with both ends open and sleep in it like that or as a hammock, if there aren't any suitable trees i then use two branches tall enough to keep it from the ground and tether it down with ropes and rocks.

      Got the Helsport Extreme one. It's a bit big, bulky and heavy, but if you have no problem with that, it is a good piece of kit. Especially when one has found out the do's & don'ts, it will surprise you... in the possitive way that is :-) Most people stare themselves blind on only one feature it offers, rather then see it for what it is : a Multi-functional ( emergency ) item. I've slept in it for five days in spring, in mountainous terrain ( with a tarp as a windbreak )... and I was fine.

    • @R0b87
      @R0b87 7 років тому +4

      I have had mine for two years now. They do sell a patch kit, if you are unfortunate enough to tear it, although I suspect the biggest danger to the Jerven might be when using it close to a bonfire, and embers may burn a hole. Many people use the Jerven bag for their hunting dogs, as cover/groundsheet, so it can certainly handle the claws of a dog scratching it.
      + of the Hunter model is the full length, so it is pretty good as a sleeping bag/tarp. Also the padding/insulation of the Hunter makes it more quiet, mine does not have the rustling sound that the Original has.
      Biggest gripes of Jerven bags if used for sleeping bag, is condensation. Being waterproof, it does not breath well. So I just leave each end of the bag a bit open, for ventilation. :)

    as you rightly say, Lars, it's very expensive. I bought a poncho in camo pattern and it cost me less than £20. Cheap, yes, but it protected £1,000 worth of photo equipment in the rain very well, so it was worth it for me. Now, I guess that paying way over 100 euros is perfect when the use of it is for special purposes, but not for me. Take care...

    I have the Hunter model and it gets pretty damp when you've slept in it one night, even with my face outside, that is why I would not recommend to sleep in it multiple nights, it needs to be able to dry. But perfect lightweight option for a one night bivouac,
    I use it as a sleeping bag above 5 degrees celcius and I always sleep with my (mid layer) clothes on in it, very comfortable!!
    When multiday bushcrafting I use it together with my lavvu tent as a ground sheet / bivy bag / extra insulation. So the fjellduken is a good companion for your Hungarian tent. :-)

    I've got a "chem cloud nose" and "chem cloud sinuses". I bet it feels just like your nose. It sounds like it, more or less. Depending on what they are using it seems, the nose can be very runny for 16 hours straight, starting the minute I walk out the door. It can also start to bleed heavily without a warning. I never had problems with any of this until they started making some heavy duty chem clouds here.

  • @SLG1911

    I too much prefer canvas for most outdoor applications though, like gore-tex, you won't stay dry if you sit on very wet ground for long. These bags/poncho's have always seemed very flimsy and noisy to me for most of my field/hunting use. About a year ago, I bought a bivy bag/rain protection combo called the Bivanorak, from Hilleberg. You are likely aware of these. It is not particularly quiet, but it does a good job protecting from heavy rain, and it works well as a bivy sack too. Seems like a better blend of features too me, though everyone's use and interests are different. It keeps me from having to carry dedicated rainwear, or a dedicated bivy, and works well in either format. Pairs with a tarp very well, or by itself in a pinch. Can be used to sit on wet ground as needed, and also allows you to stretch out. Pretty nice so far.

    Damn, that pattern looks just like boreal rock, with the moss and lichen patterns on it. Never seen that type of printed fabric-pattern before. Really pleases my eye, have to say.
    Again, I have to say thank you for the honesty in your videos. Many reviewers would've said something like "It seems ok, it has a nice pattern and an inner lining" and all that bla bla bla. But real outdoorsmen don't need that bullshit, you talking about how it feels in the hand etc., about it's thickness and finish and that, is very helpful to a lot of people considering buying this. At least now I won't have to wonder what was in that paper parcel from Varusteleka. :D
    Hunting season just began here in Finland, hunters are shooting ducks all over the island that contains our cottage(in the middle of a large river). Yesterday driving home from the cottage we actually saw a group of about ten hunters who had felled a moose very close to the road, they had the carcass right there. Must've weighed hundreds of kilos, by the few seconds glance I got.
    PS. Who the hell among your commenters comments that you should blow your nose? I'm usually very cordial but I have to say that is some prime bullshit right there. This channel is about wilderness living and survival, not about empty sinuses. Are there folks so alienated from biology they are bothered by normal bodily functions? By Odin's single eye, that's some thick BS right there.

    Interesting to see you pick up a Jerven bag, definitely not the usual military surplus. :)
    I have a Jerven Hunter that I got from Varusteleka. The Jervens are uncommon here in the USA. AAMOF, I used it on an overnight camp last night. The temperature got down to about 40 degrees F. / 4.5 degrees C. It kept me warm although I should have put thicker socks on because my feet got a little cold.
    Despite the manufacturer's claims about the lined Jervens not having condensation build up inside, mine is out back on my patio drying out. I had some moisture buildup inside.
    I'll probably end up keeping the Jerven in my truck for winter. For a multipurpose quilt / sleeping bag / greatcoat, I like my Hill People Gear Mountain Serape better.

    Before I get too far into another one of your great videos, I have to comment about the structure you are sitting under...
    Get another 2x4 and nail it to the other 2x4 support, not flat against each other, but where they make a "T". Nail about every foot or so. That is super strong and will prevent either board from bowing under weight or typical stress. It looks like that foreground 2x4 is bowing a lot!
    There, I said it...now I can get back to watching...

    Many seasons now (like wow!!! I'm counting 17-20 years) I have had excellent results with the Swiss 'rubberized-nylon' Alpenflage poncho. This is a more rugged, roomy cagoule-like configuration vs. poncho/tarp and has been reliable in the harshest environments. The material is not really 'rubber' and is a hybrid plastomer of sorts... possible alloy of PVC/PU lamination to a synthetic base cloth... It's totally waterproof fabric. For the fit, functional storm effectiveness, camo pattern, and value... there is no better in my experience. That said -- I would not like an unexpected and out of control swift glassade on ice or snow if there was any exposure to cliffs, rocks, and trees. The alpenflage is surprisingly effective here in Alaska... especially in Moose and Caribou country.

    Polyester is pretty good when compared to nylon. A little lighter than canvas. That impregnating is going to make it shine for direct moisture. You may have to vent it more as it does not breathe as well as canvas. That reflective material is what I’m interested in. Does it work as good as mylar or is it a gimmick? I use an SOL Mylar bag inside my 2 pound sleep bag to plus up my bag rating of 40 degrees to about 28 degrees Fahrenheit as the temperature drops. My clothes add the extra insulation. If the temperature is going to be 30 F or less I bring a 20F or 0 F Wiggys sleeping bag or both. Wiggys is the only bag that is as compressible and as warm as down, yet should be cleaned in the washer machine. Why do I use the 2 pound sleep bag for temps from 55F to 32F? Because it is the most convenient way to add insulation when stationary without the weight or bulk penalty. I like the pattern on the Jerven bag you picked out. Have you thought about putting a zipper in a wool throw or blanket to wear as a poncho under your Russian camo poncho? I would wax treat the canvas on the Russian camo poncho and use a folded aluminum 3 legged stool to sit up off the ground. It can be easily slung over a shoulder. I will look forward to your report. On my channel , kurt Baier, I show how I put a zipper in a US GI Woobie and attached a mylar blanket. It’s to noisy for hunting but performs better for warmth.

    The Jerven Fjellduken is a extremely useful thing. It`s kind of a mediocre replacement for a good tarp but it really shine as a big rain poncho you can move around in, or if you need to sit still/take a nap, protect against wind. Perfect for fishing and hunting from a post, it`s good for camouflage and the shape disrupt the recognizable human form quite well.
    It packs about the same as a tarp but is more expensive, comes in thin waterproof standar , isolated ,winter.
    Several times it has turned wet and cold situations into relatively comfortable events for me and my dog , and as mentioned you can simply continue walking in it. A most useful all round equipment.
    ...not silent but i would not call it noisy... Recommended. One of those things that really can be "survival"...for real.
    I have no experience in it below - 15-20 celsius/or winter version.

    The problem with this kind of equipment is its really difficult test it in extreme conditions. For years i carried around a rubberised German army poncho and a mylar survival blanket thinking this would save me if I got in a really difficult situation. When that difficult situation arose they were not worth two Knobs of goat shit. I still carry a survival sheet and the poncho sometimes but i also carry a tourch , fire lighting gear, some food, a dry base layer, A variety of fire lighting equipment and the latest addition a silky gomboy 270.
    My understanding of this kind of equipment as with survival blankets is they wont keep you warm for an extended period of time.

    Oh you really are full of surprises! I would NEVER have expected to see you in such a Jerven bag. Both synthetic AND expensive like hell. :o) But good camo. I must say, that I do not really understand this preference of canvas all the time. Of cause it is sturdy but thick and heavy too, but compared to many synthetics, that is because the synthetic stuff is made thin, for light weight, low volume and easy carry. I mean, some cheap pseudo-military ponchos (Mil-Tec or so) of thin polyamide (Nylon)/polyester one can have in a small pocket, and they are still strong enough for every day use (I mean years) biking/ walking in the city at least (And in more open terrain). Do not mean the flimsy emergency ones. Polyamide (and most polyester) is stronger than cotton in wear and tear resistance, compared to weight ratio, so if one got a poncho of equivalent sort of weight per square meter or so, it should beat the canvas. also in rip and tear resistance. That I am sure of. Just take a backpack of 1000 denier Nylon, it is not so easy to tear up. Or if one are biking a lot. You get holes in your cotton blue jeans between the legs, where they hit the saddle much faster than in polyamide hiking pants eg. that's for sure. IMHO.
    Not to say, that one should not use canvas ponchos. One should do, what feels right and easiest for the location and situation, but it is just for saying it.
    Found this by accident. They seem to make strong Cordura Nylon ponchos, that they even use as hammocks and chairs when out hiking and camping. They seem strong enough. wildernessinnovation.com/ First saw them on their UA-cam channel: ua-cam.com/users/wildernessinnovationfeatured
    Not to promote them or make anyone buy their stuff, but just to support my claim, that it is possible to make strong synthetic ponchos with good tear and wear resistance. :o) Nice sunday no matter what.

      And the colder the weather the more that stuff rustles.
      Back in the '80s a lot of guys in the British army used to buy nylon waterproofs in DPMT to wear over their combats for rainy exercises, at night you could hear them rustling as they moved from several hundred metres away. Often this would be patrol sections doing a reccy close to or inside an enemy line so rustling around like that is not too good.

    • @Wylder955
      @Wylder955 7 років тому +4

      Same could be said about the US gen 1-2 gore-tex jacket and trousers those things are really noisy compared to to a normal field jacket. I only use gore-tex in extremely wet,muddy conditions (easy to clean) or deep snow otherwise a field jacket i think in uk it's called a smock is perfectly usable to keep warm or keep away moderate rain and snow provided if you apply a good waterproof coating you can stay nice and dry for hours.

    • @chrisosh9574
      @chrisosh9574 7 років тому +1

      I always preferred the British '58 pattern olive drab poncho to be the best thing if you were staying still in one place for a time, it was totally waterproof, works as a basha or ground sheet and it had almost indestructable press studs for joining several together. Although it was some kind of rubberised or plastic material it didn't rustle much. For my combats, I used to spray them with a silicone tent spray a bit like Scotchguard so they would repel most rain unless it was heavy or persistent. compared to modern kit though they were quite heavy.

    • @Wylder955
      @Wylder955 7 років тому +1

      Only used ponchos when i had to stand watch during the summer or something similar and it had good..ish airflow since it's loosely fitting on the body compared to a gore-tex jacket which is breathable as a rubber glove. Nowadays for normal outdoors activities i stay inside when it rains haha

      Keith Spence yes it is expensive. But the quality of it is very high. Hunters in Norway wich hunt raindeer in the cold mountains in Norway, have been using these items for a long time. This has saved many unfortunate hunters who have been surprised by bad weather in the mountains. This is not a toy. It is a very high quality gear. I do not know any hunters who go hunting raindeer in Norway that does not have some kind of Fjellduk. Mauntain cover. Highly recomended.

    Hej Lars
    Just to say something on your running nose comment. I recognized it as well. What many people, especially the ones from not so cold climates, do not get. It is condensation. It is the same as taking a cold can out of the fridge on a warm day. The temperature difference between your lunges and the "visible" part of the nose is, probably in your case right now, around 35°C. The moisture of the exhaled air condenses on the colder surfaces close to your nostrils. 1. there is no way to avoid this. 2. even if you wipe it off, it will keep going almost instantly. 3. pulling in the water keeps your nasal mucosa moist as well. 4. pulling it all the way through keeps at least some of the water in your body. (/smartass)
    Besides pissing off some sensitive viewers, there are only benefits for you keeping that habit. I cannot wait to get winter here in central Sweden as well. I was marveling when I saw the snow coming down on your Silky F180.

    Hi Mate, thanks for posting your review, I'll be honest, I actually like the concept behind the system, but having seen the material and overall thickness, I am a bit sceptical about the thermal qualities during winter (mainly high winds and rain combined with low temperatures) and the actual material type it is made out of, even though it is reflective internally - I thought it was made from similar material to german/belgian ponchos and a lot heavier duty. Not keen on the detatchable arms either, like I say, I really like the concept behind it, the pattern and the overall light weight and versatility, just not convinced by it and it's price tag.I am a big fan of Scandanacian surplus stuff as it is well thought out and designed... If you could do an overnighter video I would be very interested in your thoughts, lets face it, Russian weather is a bit more hardcore than that in Northern England! Thanks for posting, and all the best. Nick

    • @fegman
      @fegman 7 років тому

      I appreciate that, and appreciate that in comparison to British Army surplus as a whole, Scandanavian equipment is much more superior in my opinion (based on equipment I actually own) very well designed and thought out, good quality etc. I'm not totally ruling it out as a sleep system and shelter, just very sceptical :)
