i live in norway and every one i know pretty much owns one ! they are amazing! one of those acctually kind of saved my life when i was on a mountain expedition with mates, a snow storm blew in suddenly and we coulndt move or see more then 5 metrtes! we ended up findingf a boulder and linked our 3 jerven duk's together and set it up against the boulder and light our little camping stove wich heated it up like mad!
During the army, I had the thermo extreme. It made my troop able to survive outdoors in -40C for a week. Fell in love with this and bought my own jerven thermo. Introduced this to my gf who also bought one for herself. Now we combine ours to one large sleepingbag which keeps us warm on 0-5C.
In recruitschool, I was one of the 'bad guy' actors. In the play, I barely escaped an encounter and then had a troop follow me. I hopped over an edge, rolled in, snuck in the jerven bag. As I hid, it became so cozy I fell asleep till' the next morning. It cost that troop their whole night. I paid dearly in quite the amount of ticks though. Been completely convinced this is the nicest thing I own ever since. I own three jerven bags now (mini hunter, king size, thermal) and can easily and lightweightly survive the wilderness for days in any norwegian season with two of them. My knee went bad on a trip, and putting up the emergency shelter to rest up was unreasonably easy.
The Jerven bags are excellent bit of kit, costs but one of the best bits you can ever get, IMO. It is one of my top 3 survival items ever. The camo pattern works in most environments at most times of the years. they do a white, orange, woodland and other patterns but the mountain moss is the best. So many uses and so warm for it's weight. I have had mine several years and it has travelled around the world a bit. :) Thanks Funky
It is windproof and waterproof less the zips and holes at the corners but is not breathable so you have to watch condensation and make sure you air it out after you sleep in it. It also blocks scent for hunters etc.
Tinky Pete hi. It looks good but at that price I would use a poncho, liner and a hd casualty blanket. Not as versatile but for the emergencys here in the UK I think it would be a good option. Also the inclusion of a Snugpak thermal poncho liner and poncho may be another option. I would also want it in orange. I don't see the point of having an emergency item that hides you! Jmo. Thanks for the review.
Gretat demo man!! I am good buddies with a retired Royal Norweigan Air Force captain, and career rescue diver. He’s been on the Sea King rescue helicopter for decades. He has told me many stories of people they have saved that survived only beacuse they carried one of these. Obviously I carry one too.
I'm a big fan of items that serve more than one purpose. This Jerven bag has just been added to my list. Great channel by the way - just found your channel the other night. Keep the great content coming.
When using it as a windbag or just pulling it over the head when resting a smart trick is to use a small candle inside. I usually bring a gravelight and place it between my legs. Keeps you warm!
This awesome bushcraft channel and the video he's are awesome way for people to learn and be education and I am glad to support this amazing man and his amazing bushcraft channel 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👏👏👏
I always thought our own gear was some of the best, guess what ... we are now ordering Jerven bags. Fantastic. Greetings from the (now much warmer) Alps. C. :-)
Great channel. I have just purchased one of these, took me ages to discover it! I would like to give the hammock option a try but I'm a little on the heavy side (14 stone). Good idea?
I got another version, Jerven Thermo, living in Oslo more then15 years ago. There are tent parts to that version. Used when foto/video/hunting/fishing etc. My "problem" is that I can't find an excuse to acquire the Hunter model:-).The model I use still is like new! The price is low for this gear. Considering quality and multi use. Exellent video, ATB from Sweden. Johnny
I got the Helsport Fjellduk and that one has arms that zip onto the armholes, plus it also comes with a hood that zips in the upper front part, leaving the top bit to accommodate a bergen. Mine is the Extreme, which has a thicker insulating layer, thus making it bigger & heavier. The cam's practically the same, also has a signal panel and a belt ( strap ). Have slept in it @ -5 °C, was out like a light, but you have to remember that it's NOT made to be comfortable, it's just a multitude of things in one neat little package. You have to sleep in it with the zip facing upwards, to allow some of the damp air inside to get out. The bulk of the condensation will be absorbed by the liner ( if you have it zipped in ), and will thus pool in the bottom ( so make sure you've got a good insulating layer underneath the bag. I use it for overnighters when on motorcycle trips. Sadly, I do find it way too expensive for what it is, but still, a good piece of kit.
Thanks for a good, methodical reviewand for the links. One prepper/tactical question: how does the cammo and fabric appear under night vision. Does it retain some contrast or does it light up like a Please-Shoot-Me blanket?
Biscuits9mm Hi, We just started getting these for mountain. IR thermal almost invisible, why they ship with orange highviz flag. These things are fantastic, we use strung up as little tunnel tents, super warm. Wish we had years ago.
Interesting piece of kit, like the fact that it has multiple uses. Will have to save some pennies and get one to replace my currrent system of poncho and poncho liner which works really well as a cheaper option, but size is a limitation. Good to see you out and about again
i have the extreme version thats the most insulated saved my butt a few times in some storms here in norway i always have it in my pack winter or summer you never know always keep the original on me too its very small and take very little room. genius to throw over yoy when raining or hard wind etc etc its a real lifesaver but none of them are truely water proof over a very long time cause of the zippers and corners etc etc the millitary even get wet. but yeah the extreme version has kept me warm in a blizzard winter storm at -25 celsius just dont sit on it it need to breathe around you to create warmth. great video and review brother
Thanks for posting this video Funky! I received the Jerven Hunter this last Christmas from the wife (feeling very lucky to get one they are hard to find here in the states)but haven't had the time to take it out yet. I agree with you, the quality is amazing and they carry a 10yr warranty. I am looking forward to trying that "cocoon hammock" you set up. Keep up the good work I've been enjoying your videos for quite awhile.
They explicitly say that those mounting holes can't be used to hold human weight on them as a hammock. I've got one of the insulated ones myself, take it with me as an emergency shelter when I'm out snowmobiling.
I really miss the good old day, in your shed. The camping, and other adventures of yours. Hope you can get it together soon. Anybody who has gone through a divorce knows how devastating that is. So I wish you a quick recovery.
lifes hard at the moment with lots more crap to go through, believe me i would love to swan off camping and have a shed to chat in but real life has to come first. if youtube was my job then maybe it will be different, the fact is im working long hours and i just have to do my best. the solo and friend camps will be here at some point but right now it has to take a back seat. sorry about that cheers :)
I owned one a couple of years ago. The large size is big enough to be used as a hammock cocoon. The only real issue is they are not breathable and condensation can be a big problem.
Thank you sir for a nice video , im from Norway and i just got the extreme thermo version woodpattern camo in the mail today , looking forward to trying it . I ll check out the paracord link , seemed like a quality product
thanks , stumbled on your video, its great Fantastic bit of kit but well outta my price range,.. i look forward to seeing more vids Its cool to see thaat UK people are doing this aswell laters funky
Nice versatile bit of kit, great pattern but shame the pattern is repeated in A4 blocks ...thats a bit lazy considering the thought that went into the rest of it.
Hi, thanks for your vid. Did you really made the hammock with just the grommets? I have the old hunter kingsize and never dared to put my full 100kg of weight onto these.
by the way...I'm off work for a while because my fingers are jacked up and I'm admiring the gloves you're wearing in this video...wondering if I could take a look at them...more info? thanks mate
so not waterproof or breathable. if not waterproof, whats the point, making a basha out if it when raining still going to get wet? although as you say versatile
hello funkyprepper, good video, awesome fjellduk ☺ but I ask me if the hammock option is recommended by the manufacturer? whats about guarantee if you destroy it by using as hammock? best regards from germany Torsten
That looks like SUCH a cool piece of kit Darren!!! By my reckoning it looks like THE ultimate shelter system, why would you need anything else if you had one of those in your arsenal?!?! Good to see you out and about again my friend too!!! Just need to try and sort an overnighter or two now with Scott and the boys and it will be back to business as usual once again! :D
It's what scandinavian special forces uses, and they basicly live 30 days inside a Jerven extrem bag. It got 10 years warranty on the fabric and a nato stocknumber. Its made in norway so that is whats add the pepper to the prise.
nhm86 yes I understood all of this from the video and I am not someone who isn't afraid of spending on a good bit of equipment. my comment was more linked to interest of the longevity of the item. I see they warranty them for 10 years which shows they are backing their product. I will probably get one to see for myself if they are any good. ( they sure do look it !). atb Rob
Hi Funky, oooh I have looked at the jerven bag many times but can't justify the price of it a.t.m . I would have to be using it a lot to get my money's worth, but have to say it is a fantastic bit of kit and you showed it adaptability well :-). Love the cocoon hammock one as can see myself snugging up in that! Take care Vee :-)
looks awesome but very expensive to much for someone on military pension or the like but it does look like a top quality product & highly adaptable if I could afford one I would definitely get one thank you for sharing my friend much appreciated

Great vid. love watching all of yours always informative and enjoyable. Which it this one your using the original (£125) or the thermo £269.95. I will be getting the original. You forgot to say in the vid which speak for itself. 10 years warranty.
If You want to see different uses of this bag, especially the shelter options, the Norwegian Armed Forces has made a youtube playlist /watch?v=8TpOOyAG8CI&t=1s Its in norwegian, but You'll get the point.
they do not promise what goretex cannot hold. they are not breathable, they are not waterproof (no waterproof zippers used, so you can't lay in a puddle, if you want that get a British bivy and a basha). when you can deal with these "issues" it is a robust, versatile piece of kit. and the mountain camo is worth the money, imho.

great video and review brother
how xoes the arms behave when you re walking with it ? Are they annoying and slide down and so on ?
Wicked looking bit of kit Funky. The camo pattern is spot on. Cheers Funky 👍
Just bought one off your great review, thanks very much. Can't wait to try it.
thanks for another great video! the notification that you've posted again is one of the best parts of the week! keep on keeping on!
Made my own bud.. And own the jervan hunter.. Simple but amazing bit of kit

Austrian army issue
@@vonsprague7913 Thanks for your time. 👍
@@theronin365 just glad you saw it my friend.
How soft is the inside lining? Does it feel like the inside of a sleeping bag or do you feel like you're wrapped up in a plastic table cloth?

KEEP ON ROCKING MY UK BROTHER!
Sorry? Not from UK, American.
I just did a google image search for this, in rocky mountainous country this is practically an invisibility cloak.
I owned one a couple of years ago. The large size is big enough to be used as a hammock cocoon. The only real issue is they are not breathable and condensation can be a big problem.
That's a great bit of kit, shame it's out of my price range but something I'll keep my eye on.
Great review, great vids 👍🏼
do you perfer summer camps or winters camps
Thinking about buying 3 or 4 cigars for my next camping trip, any recommendations? Preferably not too pricey.
Any chance of you testing this in an overnight camp Darren looks a great bit of kit!

Yes., thats a fantastic shelter System. A little bit expensive, But worth every penny.

I know this comment is 2 years old; but just a headsup, don't use it as a hammock.

interesting item at £249 the quality needs to be top drawer. be interesting to see how it fairs. atb Rob

Hi Funky, is there any way of sending you a pm?
looks awesome but very expensive to much for someone on military pension or the like but it does look like a top quality product & highly adaptable if I could afford one I would definitely get one
thank you for sharing my friend much appreciated
I have exactly the same model + camo pattern :)
What are your thoughts on it having used it for a while please
It does what it is supposed to do but it is not comfortable. It is very good though for emergency use as a relatively compact and versatile piece of equipment. I have not used it in extreme winter conditions and I
would not want to do so. For very cold weather you would need something more.
Many thanks
Great bit of kit there! Little on the pricey side though. I'm gonna stick with my German poncho for now.
just watched this again...just as easy making a double layer square bivvy sack out of a roll of roofing sheet...
make sure the bags are made with the correct orientation...and use a regular Corinthian inside.

Great review video as usual! May I ask - what's the woolly pully? Looks super warm for the current cold weather.
Austrian ay dachstein sweater. They come mainly without zips, rare with zips. Boiled wool handmade sweaters, about the best out there. I picked mine up unused even though it was made 1985. Unbelievably good sweaters.
Nice video of a nice product. I have a couple of different bags like that and like them a lot. I often use my insulated one as an under blanket for my hammock.
Thanks for sharing - Martin
I love that camo pattern, but to be brutal honest I would rather have a good old poncho and ponch liner.
I have cut a slot in my poncho liner to stick my head through in the middle, from shoulder to shoulder.
hey,
i am a norwegian hunter and you should try the helsport x-trem flex. I think it is a little bit cheaper and also
pretty good.
Ya awesome item! Thanks for showing and cool uses Darren! Never saw the hammock use. Take care Friend.
thanks sepp, its a brilliant piece of kit.
yes its expensive but what you get is top quality and lots of options.
cheers my friend
A really good video. A nice bit of kit very well thought out and versatile. Bit pricey tho!!
I have the same mate...Cracking bit of kit....
Great Video ... your the Boss!!

cheers my man
Great looking kit
Looks f**king cool!!!!
very unique design!
That is an awesome piece of kit. I would definitely like to have one of those.. :D
Brilliant
I came across these on a Finnish surplus site and I have to say I have been considering one when I can afford it. I think the mountain is probably the best compromise for year round camo. It always made me think of a modern version of the communist bloc plash palatka or the Lavvu or NVA Zeltbahn. All of them are multi use shelters, ponchos, and sleeping bags in a pinch. It just seems like this is a modern version of those earlier designs.
brilliant bit of kit :-)
cool camo pattern.
that's a real nice product and review but wow the price shocked me but you get what you pay for.
Great review, not too msny of these around. Wish I had the moolah for a Jerven, way too steep for my economy.
Great kit funky
great bit of kit that, for bug out too. great vid too

that jumper looks really snug were do we get that ?
Cat Weasel. Lol. Nice video Funky
Hmm, maybe something to have a look at
haha first clip where i see someone using it as a hammock..
