In terms of pets, I generally think (some) small animal pets are more ethical to keep so long as you do it well. My sister keeps rats, for example. They're omnivores, but mostly eat plants. They do well in captivity and enjoy human company, plus they're really cute. One of her rats likes to climb onto my shoulder and cuddle into my scarf. They do need much more space than is provided in many commercial enclosures though.
Rabbits are another good vegan pet that actually does well in captivity if cared for appropriately.
As much as I'd like to have rabbits, my partner has a jack russell terrier. He wouldn't mean to hurt them, but they'd be terrified and it just wouldn't be fair.
You can get rescue small animals too. My sister's rats are rescues. She fosters them, although none seem to ever end up getting adopted by someone else.

Ignore the spam, and I totally agree! Rescuing an animal and welcoming it into your home is at least to me a very caring thing to do, and if you can afford it and you are educated enough to keep the little one happy and healthy, go for it. Personally speaking, I am waiting till I have enough space to adopt a hamster. They really need a lot more space than those pet shops tell you!

I foster cats. As a vegan I struggle with preparing them meat but unfortunately they are obligatory carnivores. I don't support breeding animals I do a lot of TNR as the most humane way of controlling population and all my cats are rescues, few of them were literally saved from plastic garbage bags as newborns after someone dumped them in the trash... :( unfortunately sometimes there are no clear black and white situations and the best we can do is to minimize harmful actions and choose lesser evil. Hopefully one day we'll progress to a society where people won't keep animals as pets and we won't have abandoned stray animals.

I have a pet rabbit I adopted from someone who had rescued but no longer wanted her. I had never had a rabbit before but fell in love with her. She is a bit of a sassy brat, and from what I've heard it is common for rabbits to be abandoned for not being cuddly or sweet enough. But if we take the time to understand them and meet them at their level they can be affectionate and make great pets.

You are right about the distinction between plant based and vegan. However, the person asking that particular question is right, I never say I’m vegan, always vegetarian, the reason being simple: for most people “vegan” has a negative connotation because of the social media “vegan influencers”, most are honestly not the type of people I’d want to be associated with.

Former male (college, not elite) gymnast. What a great question! For context, grips stretch and wear out with daily use generally every 6 mo to 2 yrs and men have separate grips for high bar and rings. Higher levels need more frequent and reliable changes and backups, etc. I never found synthetic grips to be as long lasting or effective and neither have many athletes I competed with, but that was over 15 years ago - perhaps better alternatives exist now. And I never found honey to work well for my hands (cornsyrup or good old spit was fine and honey tended to cake on the bar and become slippery), but I was crap at parallel bars anyhow, so what do I know? I feel so useful in the comments now! :)

Sometimes kids go through a rebellious stage and then as adults, choose to drop it and go back to values they had previously. This is a general thing but could easily happen with veganism.

just gonna jump in here and say, I personally despise the term "plant based" only because in my personal experience it is wildly confusing (as well as not necessarily aligning with the ethics the way i see veganism doing). For example, not that long ago, I was at a sports game with my partner who likes sports. There was a "plant based" burger option which my partner pointed out and was like "oh cool, a veggie burger we can eat (he is not vegan but eats 99% vegan with me, and does not eat meat unless it is kosher). Me, a vegan was like, um wait, lets check to make sure it is actually vegan. I asked the workers, who were like umm we don't know, and upon checking the ingredients of the "plant based" burger, it became clear that this was a BEEF burger with plant ingredients in it, advertising itself as "plant based" since the burgers base was largely plants or something. I have seen shit like this before. idk, i just really don't truest it and really don't like that it sometimes could literally be a beef burger with peas or whatever in it, and othertimes its used interchangeably with "vegan" or used instead of vegan to not offend people's sensitivities and problems with "vegans" so ya. not a fan lol

As for oysters, there is some debate if they even have sentience, I avoid them cause might as well, but we don't know if and how much they can feel. Would be interesting to find an answer to that.
Also, I don't know if this would be helpful for you, but there's many different brands that are specifically made with people who have IBS, crohns disease and other food limiting conditions in mind, that make packages to compliment your meals and get you to reach your nutritional requirements more easily. My understanding on the honey in gymnastics is that in many Asian countries at high level women gymnasts used honey to help them “stick” to the bar, essentially because they couldn’t afford grips. I think many of the Olympic gymnasts do have grips now but certainly you can see footage from poorer counties in past Olympic cycles where the gymnasts are doing bars and have no grips on. Those teams still tend to use honey to this day. High level gymnasts go through grips very quickly. There is also leather on the beam and vault.

Not being able to eat legumes is rough. There are plenty of other plant based protein sources, so I wouldn't think that makes veganism impossible. I guess instead of soy go for seitan and higher protein nut milks, but even then adding in some dairy and eggs might seem necessary. I do think those are possible to get ethically sourced. I just don't because there's no need and it isn't really an alternative to factory farms as the industrialization is necessary to meet current demand.

Hey, i have a few questions i have been contemplating about for a long time
    1. I feel strong emotion for factory farming of birds and mammals. They have higher sentience and theur pain experience is as advanced as us. They suffer in life and painful death. I just can't ignore that. However, i personally have no issue with eating fish or any invertibrates due to their primitive brain, complex emotions and pain reception ( anything less than amphibians). I'm a pescetarian right now.
    2. If someone keeps chicken or goats on his farmstead, provide free and healthy life to them and then kill them painlessly through nitrogen asphyxiation after they have passed about half of their average lifespans, would it still be wrong?
    3. I rescue street animals and feed them. It's mostly dogs. I just don't want to force my human mind and ideology on them. They just get crazy over meat and if i force them to eat veg diet, they mostly ignore or eat it out of sheer hunger. I just can't do it. They have short lifespan and i think they should enjoy what their biology wants them to. Happiness matters the most, animals mostly get it from food, company and sex. I think it's nit fair to deprive them from their basic sources of pleasure for my own moral ideology. I want to keep them on fish diet as well. What you say?

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen 8 місяців тому +2

I don't think the current evidence suggests that fish have a lower pain reception than most mammals; is been shown that are sentient and they do feel pain. It's different for other invertebrates, molluscs f.i., that have no or a very primitive nervous system.

Dogs can live fine on a fish diet or even a vegan diet (if you can afford a quality vegan dog food). Honestly the best thing for dogs is a commercial diet that meets their species needs. Most are a mix of meat and plants. Many dogs also enjoy plenty of vegan foods as treats (peanut butter, pumpkin, & sweet potato are all liked by most dogs).

My kids are grown now, but they are still vegetarians and to my knowledge, have never intentionally eaten meat. And that's despite disrespect we suffered as parents. My son told me years later that a friend's mother offered him a hotdog at a sleep-over birthday party, saying "Your parents aren't here. You can have meat here." He was five at the time, and according to his story, he refused the hotdog. During their teens, some of their friends and parents of the friends would nudge them to eat meat with similar arguments. So, at least in my kids' cases, the social pressure was very strong. We raised them with full understanding of the plight of farm animals, and why we didn't eat meat. Neither of them are vocal activists, but they have influenced some of their adult friends by example. This may be controversial here, but we started my oldest off as vegan like his father and I were at the time. But, back then, it wasn't as easy to be vegan, and we morphed into a mostly vegan, but sometimes vegetarian family. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't give them a bit of grace to eat dairy (think cheese pizza) at the time. In any event, I never experienced any push-back or rebellion.

I’m not vegan, I was vegetarian at 15. I toy with the idea of doing it again but I’ve had weight loss surgery and I’m just nervous I’ll have a hard time reaching my protein goal if I were to go vegan or vegetarian. Anyway.

took me 48 sec to notice the shirt. pretty aggressive lol. glad you're able to make calm videos, living in our world is a shit show. i love the word Plantbased. I think it's interchangeable on Menu Items but not for describing someone's diet or lifestyle.
-loved the show "evil" can't wait for another season.
-can't stand the smell of goats...lived on a goat farm long enough that goat cheese smells exactly like sweaty goat.
-I'm thinking it's misleading to say 'donate to an animal charity to offset the impact' what kind of charity are we supporting? petting zoos? what should we call the right type of animal charities? 'humans are animals' quote fits into this one well.
-interesting take on the Pacific Northwest climate change impact. I always thought this, but the wildfires have scared scare me recently. there are no trees left to burn in a lot of places mentioned. I moved from Hawaii only a year ago so this topic is fresh on my mind.
-home improvement gang...the work truly never ends.
    thank you another great video.

I work at a sex shop and I can confirm most lubes are vegan. Decades ago there were such little regulations that they would use animal fat and as you would expect women got sick. There are regulations and laws to prevent that now. The glycerin in lube is a very specific sugar product. Ph balanced is a great reference for the quality of products in a lube but if you want to avoid the glycerin all together wickeds simply line and all of sliquid is vegan and glycerin free

With IBS, I don’t think it’s impossible to be vegan, you just gotta find the way you can do it. I have a hard time digesting insoluble fiber, but I understand that fiber is good for me, and I am vegan and not planning to quit, so yeah, it’s been uncomfortable, lots of gas at night, lots of trips to the bathroom in the morning, but I kept trying to find the way to do it. I finally found a system that works for me, psyllium husk, fermented foods, not eating in the morning until I have some time to go to the bathroom. It’s been great for a few months now. Like with everything in life, there’s probably a solution somewhere, you just have to find it. Now if it’s food allergies, that’s a different story.

I've successfully been reintroducing some legumes in my diet, so I hope you're right!! However, you shouldn't assume that your IBS is the same as the next person's. People's bodies react differently, some experience more pain, some experience more psychological symptoms, etc.

    • @hugomarquez3189
      @hugomarquez3189 8 місяців тому +3

@@ddsbread5673 for sure, I don’t even think I have intolerances (maybe raw tomatoes and garlic), if someone has a histamine intolerance, for instance, fermented foods would be off the table, or would have to be reintroduced very slowly. And some cases are more severe than others, maybe for some people it is indeed infeasible to be vegan, but I’d wager it wouldn’t be but for a very small minority. Things usually have solutions, and human anatomy and physiology has evolved over millions of years relying mostly on plants, we’ve developed a microbiome of trillions of bacteria and viruses that subsists on fiber. Health outcomes data also consistently favores a plant based diet with lots of fiber, so my bias is that our bodies will do better on plants, even if some of us have to un-kink it first.

@@nom3nnescio I didn’t say the contrary, but sometimes also people think the solution is to not be vegan, when the solution could include being vegan. If I hadn’t known any better, I would have thought that my problem was tied to being vegan, but i knew that wasn’t the case, since I had IBS for almost 20 years, and I’ve been vegan for only 3. Yes being vegan made my bloating worse, my diarrhea worse, until I found a solution (which is still working for me btw). Sometimes you think the problem is related to being vegan, when it’s not. Being vegan can make it worse until you find the solution.

So yeah maybe the Pacific Northwest is less effected by climate change and maybe we are doing a pretty good job of being green but it’s still noticeable. Like to the politicians who are like “I don’t believe in climate change” just go outside and take a deep breath during one of those weeks when we have air worse than Beijing. My favourite vegan joke: Why does vegan cheese taste so bad? Because it wasn't tested on mice!
    😂
I love it because it's one of the reasons I was able to stop eating cheese when I first went vegan 18 years ago, even though the one or two vegan cheese options were really bad back then. I would just think of all the testing being done on animals (and the poor cows crying for their babies) and it was easy not to eat cheese. Now I tell it to any non-vegan who says "I need my cheese and vegan cheese doesn't taste good! Wah!" 🤪

The simple reason why "vegan" is used less and less now is it has become synonymous with "Christian" in its connotation.
I had a conversation with colleagues online (work meeting but killing time ) and everyone bristled when veganism came up, one person wouldn't even refer to a colleague who is vegetarian (because he's South Asian) who wasn't on the call, by name, like there's this vegetarian I don't want to say his name but... Like, what ? It was really weird.

I'm not vegan just a fan of Swayze's but I totally get it. (some) Vegans remind me of the religious people around me growing up, who thought I was going to go to hell for, well, everything.

@@mairzydoats4879 further, to say homelessness in PDX is due to a lack in available housing is a wild oversimplification. Shoddily written legislation regarding rent caps, increase caps, and income-restricted housing have led to a sizable number of luxury housing units that are sitting vacant and have for years. Multiple attempts to shore up those gaps have failed in the past decade. Portland had and has the ability to house a large number of those experiencing homelessness, and realistically if they did so it would cost less than what the current reality is since it all comes down to cost from a govt. perspective. If you care enough to get on the internet and come to literally the most inaccurate interpretation of my original comment, then perhaps you care enough to hit up some city commissioners. Would you like a list? Or does your “compassion” extend only to the nearly 500 comments you’ve left on this channel since you created your YT profile?
