Man, I was really excited for this until I played it. The combat did not grab me at all. Also disappointed they went with the style of locking you into a combat zone with a party of enemies instead of just having enemies freely wandering the world, though I guess that's been the style since Seiken Densetsu 3. Interesting DF brought up the Tales of Arise comparison, as the demo of that similarly turned me off.
Anyway, here's hoping Ys X scratches my action rpg itch.

I have experienced no stuttering on my (admittedly monstrous) PC at 1440P.
The one thing I hear some people complain about is the base game FOV is a bit small, but a fan mod\ patch\thing exists to change that.
I got it recently for a friend. He has a full time job. And yet, in 2 weeks, he's fifty-something hours into it.

08:22 - When Thomas speaks, you notice that the sharp parts in the image are the hair at his left side, and his left eye. Other parts of his face, like the nose, his right eye and the right part of his hair are blurry. That's because the camera is set to use a small f/ stop (aperture widely open), thus the depth of field is very shallow. I advice changing the f/ stop (closing the aperture) to widen the DoF. Sure, it will lower the bokeh effect (blur in the background), but the face will be sharper in more places.

    • @BenPyman
      @BenPyman 2 місяці тому +1

@@sniper007ukI would expect a PS VR3 to still use controllers. VR2 has the same type of motion controllers as all other VR headsets, so VR3 would probably use something similar, which would make backwards compatibility much easier.
The main reason there isn't VR1 back compat is that it used a very different tracking and control scheme (with the external camera and move controllers), with some games (like astro bot) relying heavily on design of the tracking system, which makes it extremely difficult or impossible to translate without major redesigns.

I did a ctrl+f 'Digital Foundry' on their latest podcast (never seen it before) "The XboxEra Podcast | LIVE | Episode 223" and only two mentions came up at 1 hour 30 minutes, both were from Speshal_Nick who I'm pretty sure isn't the guy you were referring to. He was claiming that Digital Foundry has 'made sure that resolution doesn't matter this generation' so therefore they don't see the point in PS5 as everything runs at 60 fps which was the key benefit of PS4 Pro over PS4 Amateur. However, if the PS5 Pro suddenly means it has a better resolution than XSX then 'I'm sure digital Foundry will suddenly care about resolution'. They seem to believe that XSX is a more powerful system than PS5 in some ways, but that DF are biased to focus only on the strengths of the PS5.
I think we can all agree that's nonsense since DF are clearly and openly biased that the Steam Deck OLED is the best system this generation!

  • @techsamurai11

Tandem is the holy grail - I don't know if it's achievable for large TVs. It's essentially Dual-cell using 2 OLED panels which you'd think would be more complicated and expensive than Dual-cell but somehow they've struggled to generate Dual Cell for TVs. It also begs the question of how cheap Dual Cell would be using a monochrome LED and colour LED panel together for which you wouldn't even any local dimming which is now becoming the more complex part of the TV with 1,000-10,000 dimming zones.
1,000 nits full screen is overkill for TVs, most high-end LEDs top out at 700-800 for full window and it's irrelevant if 700 or 850.
For OLEDs, if they can hit 500-600 nits full window and sustain it for a few seconds with 400 nits full window sustained, TANDEM may be less important at that point.
Also, Tandem reduces the risk of burn-in massively.

There might also be a bit of counter-reactionary mindset there in misunderstanding what we mean when we point out these issues or when DigitalFoundry does. They might be thinking we are saying that these issues completely ruin/make games not worth even trying out or buying, which isn't what we are saying, it's just that these issues make the games presentations less attractive which is a disservice to themselves. I think some people see criticisms like this as an attack of developers (which some people are rather...obtuse online, so I don't blame them) when it reality we are simply wanting solutions to ensure even higher fidelity gaming in the future.

Please don't test AFMF 2 with RTSS's or any third-party's framerate control! Use Radeon Chill, available in the same page of the Radeon App. Chill is integrated to AFMF 2 for the best results with frame pacing, VRR and the like. I usually lock both limits to 60 (= 120 with FG). Even more important, don't use the Radeon App's Anti-Lag + external FRC - AFMF 2 is designed to run with Anti-Lag and FRC but it doesn't want both simultaneously.

Functionality such as FRC is not supported by any official Windows API. The only safe and robust way to implement that is either as part of each game engine, which some do but most don't, or as part of GPU drivers or first-party utilities made by the same people that have privileged information and access to their driver. Anything made by a third-party without such access like RTSS is inherently a hack, that will work on a best-effort basis but you are always risking some issues such as the fact that a FG system such as DLSS or FSR will not know to account for the third-party frame limiter's interference when calculating extremely precise timings for ideal frame pacing. I lost count of how many times I saw people including pro reviewers mention problems with RTSS, in all GPUs.

Resident Evil 4 is seen as one of the best games of all time. Its remake is on PS VR2 exclusively and is incredible. Add in GT7, Horizon, Resident Evil Village all as exclusives in its first year, and 90% of the best PC games are there now, and now the adapter for those that aren't. The PC is across the other side of a 2BR apt.. both TV and PC connected by WiFi.. I am actually VERY impressed with how well it's working given the setup. She was playing it pretty much all day Saturday and it never skipped a beat she said it was working great. I was actually shocked. Of course Riven is a pretty slow paced puzzler but the couple times I was watching it, it looked great to me. 01:47:00 People simply are spoiled. For the first time in like 25 Years a truly game changing technology hits and 99% of ppl on Reddit are complaining like mommy stole their candy and in other posts write "yeah my Intel 960 (from 2011?) with my GTX 1060 is still fine", when in reality it's very likely that even a 150$ CPU could double their framerate (paired with a GTX 1060). You don't have to buy a new PC every 2 Years, but everything > 5 Years is a LONG TIME even "right now". Just as an example: Ryzen 5000 was released in 2020 and Ryzen 7000/9000 produce around 15-30% more frames. That is the difference between "somewhere in the 40ish frames" and "more than 60 FPS". Now imagine how big the difference is when your PC is 7,8,9,10 Years old. If you only play Pixelart games like Stardew Valley - fine, but if you want to play Tripple A Games on Ultra Settings, you simply need a "Ultra PC". If you don't have one, take 2500 EUR/USD and buy one. If that is not in your budget range, stop complaining and play on lower settings. The game will still be fun.

Those camera cuts in College Football are so jarring. Going through frame by frame, there's a lot of weird stuff going on. The initial scene pauses for a few frames, then when it finally cuts to the new angle, the players are in a generic pose for a frame, before popping into their mocap positions; the cheerleaders spawn in with a lower LOD, missing some of their hair and stuff... it looks crazy, and you can sense that something is "popping" into existence even without slowing it down, even if you can't see all of those details that are changing. It's ironic the PSVR2's biggest problem is lack of quality software, when that's the biggest issue with PCVR as well. There's plenty of capable headsets for cheap and even the "high end" ones aren't _that_ much better. I see a lot of people say they won't buy into VR until the headsets are better, when in reality the hardware is already there, but when you do jump in with both feet like I did 8ish years ago, you quickly realize there's precious few games that are anything more than a glorified tech demo.
What we need is less dedicated overpriced VR games that developers never recoup development costs on, and more that take a No Man's Sky approach and simply add a VR option to existing and upcoming games. I find it odd how many games will take the development time to implement high end ray and even path tracing that few people have the hardware to run, but oddly ignore supporting VR that has a _TON_ of installed base headsets that surely couldn't take that much time to implement when we already have mods like UEVR that shows how easy it is to convert a single image to two. They only need to map the controller inputs which they already do for gamepads to begin with.
It just seems a no brainer to do that little bit of extra work to make your game stand out vs path tracing few can realistically use. And that's coming from someone that actually _does_ have a GPU fast enough for path tracing.

One of the biggest points in favor of a single SoC type architecture is that it gives developers more access and control to the underlying hardware. In the 80's and 90's all game devs essentially shipped a custom OS with their game (boot disks). There just wasn't enough space to have a a BIOS and OS running on the same machine. Upside was devs had direct access to all system resources - guaranteed. With the proliferation of standalone CPUs and GPUs and their added black box magic and drivers on top of drivers, this just isn't the case. The amount of computing power we're leaving on the table is staggering. Hardware manufacturers have been getting way too comfortable for way too long.

I was quite impressed with AFMF2. As Rich alluded to; the biggest benefit is getting a game to output at a consistent framerate somewhere in the sweet spot of your monitors VRR rate. There's a driver native framecap thing available in Radeon Chill - using that disables something else IIRC. In addition to DX11/12 it works on Vulkan (and I thing OpenGL). More options are always good. I tested it on Jedi Survivor; it didn't help with that games awful traversal stuttering.

2:25 Was Gamer Network not invited or only DF? Is it standard practice for all subdivisions of a company to be invited separately to such events?

Rich specifically thanks people from Gamer Network for their footage so they must have been invited. I suspect invites are grouped by publication (the people doing the inviting have relationships with publications) rather than parent company (whoever that happens to be this week).

I totally don't understand the negative narrative around it. It's an awesome device, and for all the love John gives the Quest 3, it will be a cold day in hell before I give a cent to Meta.

If you listen to gaming podcasts non-stop who say "PSVR2 is dead", you'll believe it.
If you don't listen to the podcasts and simply play the awesome games that have been released, the headset is alive and kicking and extremely fun and immersive.

That’s true. And some of the negative stuff is also driven by people who won’t/can‘t afford the device. Which isn’t anything bad but it’s not a nice way to constantly bully the platform.
Sony could have done so much more for the very good headset but it’s like it is. There are definitely some nice games available.

The biggest advantage of the extra RAM on the Ally X I have noticed is less hitching, which is an issue with the 16GB handhelds. Still would have preferred a 24GB Legion Go as the screen size is hands down better to the point where I keep finding my Ally X screen to be tiny and narrow by comparison. If the game doesn't suffer from having only 16GB, then the Go is the ideal choice, if its hitching a lot, then its the Ally X and its almost to small screen.

With regards to supporter question 4, I use the recommended spec shown on the Steam store page as a guide. If the developer tells me that my PC is good enough to run their game, I expect a stable 60 FPS. If the developer tells me that my PC is not good enough to run their game, I'll wait to play it until I've upgraded.
If my PC is better than or equal to the recommended spec shown on the Steam store page, and I'm regularly dropping below 60 FPS, the developers have messed up. Bearing in mind that I always wait 3-6 months to play a game to give the developers chance to fix launch problems with patches, so by that time, yeah I don't expect to encounter any serious problems.
