    a list of tools would really help me.

    Superb video, thanks. My only concern was for your safety when using the spring compressor. It would be sensible to have a retaining strap / chain around the tool and spring in case of slipping (it can happen). Stay safe.

    A really good video that has made me confident about changing my front springs. All i could find on the various Merc forums was a load of old faff and waffle but your video told me everything i needed to know in one go.

      I’m happy that it helped you! The right spring compressor and half the job is done! No need for alignment after this job.

    Mr Mercedes replaced my springs and now the car sits low at the front, they say and i confirm the correct coded springs are fitted, but they cant get their heads around the springs may be mis colour coded or they were not manufactured to spec.
    So i say thank you for this video, and cluck Mr Mercedes i will replace the front springs myself !

      You’re welcome, glad I could be of help. If you buy the springs at a Mercedes dealer, you’ll get an exact fit as they’ll be ordered according to your VIN number. All aftermarket springs are a gamble and the small difference in price definitely isn’t worth it.

    I've got the new springs ready to change. What torque settings should I use for the big top nut, the 3 small top bolts, the elbow and the 2 bolts onto the hub please ?

      Sorry, I don’t have any torque values at this time and I can’t remember the numbers.

    Hi, what brand spring compressor are you using?

    • @carscloseup
      @carscloseup  Рік тому +1

      There’s no name/brand on it, but it’s a heavy duty version. I bought it in a local tool shop. Probably made in China, but it had hold up very well.

    Why did you replace the spring?
    Avantgarde to Elegance?

      I’ve replaced the left spring because it was broken, then i decided to replace the right not to have the issue of that snapping too…

    How do you keep the top plate straight during reassembly? Mine goes at an angle each time i remove the spring compressors leaving the spring off centre on the strut

    • @carscloseup
      @carscloseup  Рік тому +1

      If you place the top and bottom of the spring, in the correct position (there are grooves where they are supposed to sit) then the top plate will sit correct, but it’s supposed to sit at an angle, it’s not sitting straight!

      I know it’s difficult to see on the video, but it has a slight angle, but again, it’s important that the spring is positioned correctly; start by positioning it at the button and then you can turn the the top plate to the correct position. Then Slowly releasing the tension of the spring, you might have to correct the position during this stage, before the tension is fully released. Hope you understand my english, because it’s not my first language 😅

      about the torque specs; just observe the tension when you release the bolt, then tighten them at about the same torque. I know it’s not the correct way, but I have done multiple repairs without torque specs and never had any problems….

      @@carscloseup Thanks. It turns out I stupidly had the spring upside down as there were no markings and i was convinced it was the same at both ends. That slight turn out of the spring to engage with the bottom perch was not easy to spot but is a show stopper if it ends up at the top of the strut. All done now and thanks again for the great video
