one time a spring compressor slipped off and my arm got pinched between the top of the spring and the top of the top plate, mighty painful and luckily i had a spanner in reach to retighten and release my arm!
20 years later here i am doing the same job on a w204, the only hassle is the new shock's shaft needs pulling out quite a way to get the nut on...

why not take it to a workshop for mounting the springs up to the new shock, safer and probably cheaper then buying clamps.

I see how the spring cramps are changed when you reload the spring on the new shock strut, you have the ends opposite opposing so you've had to reposition those cramps- its too difficult to get them in aliment and get the top together, if you had 2 sets of cramps one set that is shorter and can be done up after the spring is already compressed you could do it easier- you've done a trick you aren't showing. Most people would be better off to take it to a workshop that has the purpose built spring compressor(its a pedestal cramp unit), be cheaper then buying those very dangerous spring cramps- hats off to you for being able to do it that way, but the average person will have big trouble keeping the spring straight to fit the strut! took me a couple of attempts....positioning is critical.

Thanks for the great detailed video. Can you please kindly advise the torque specs for the bolts in this video? If not do you have a trusted source? Thanks!

the main nut on the shock is 85nm(it really needs 21mm strut socket so you can use a torx 50 thru it to hold it or you can bust the other end) a, the 3 top mount e14 bolts are 33nm, the bolt e18/21mm nut is 100nm so are the 2/ e14 that connect the hub to the strut. The sway bar link rod is 98nm(ARB mount).

Sigh of relief at the ending. Definitely a dangerous job. I dont trust any of those spring clamps in the slightest. Lol.

Can you just buy the entire strut assembly and do away with the danger zone?

take the new struts to a shop to get them reloaded, is smarter then doing this. He has played some tricks here he's not showing here- I bet he has 2 sets of cramps one set cut to be a smaller length so they fit internally of the mount points. . Mercedes have designed them to be loaded in a dedicated pedestal screw press- to protect their service revenues!

I do wonder how many people got killed by this job? Only really safe ways should be showed on videos. And I am afraid there isn't any.

Ive seen dudes do this with speaker wire. While on the car 2 dudes sit on front bumper and third dude loops speaker wire around the compressed spring. Next the guys get off the front bumper and the spring is tied up in the compressed setting.

I do not want to encourage anybody. I heard of somebody that broke his jaw with one of these springs, I would not do this myself, I am just making a comment. There are several videos where you can see people removing the spring without compressing it, just removing the top bolt and it looks very unimpressive and not scary at all. Look at the following video at exactly 1:00 ua-cam.com/video/kLpw6pbbDxA/v-deo.html look at this guy doing it with tie wraps ua-cam.com/video/xaZ2WCawCfs/v-deo.html Now watch the following video at 10:25 ua-cam.com/video/dLVvS6CuNlQ/v-deo.html The spring breaks and the guy almost gets injured. Look at this other video at 11:30 the compressor breaks and he gets injured. ua-cam.com/video/70Xj-83sdvM/v-deo.html Seems to me that coil compressors can be a lot more dangerous since the spring or the compressor might break and since the spring is a lot more compressed it is a lot more dangerous. *DEFINITELY NOT A JOB TO DO YOURSELF* I'll pass on this one.

@@mikeicee what kind of compressors did you use? I was having major clearance issues around the base of the strut assembly of my e350. It's freakish how much these particular springs have to be compressed.
