@@Annabvrhsn hahaha by the end I found the imposter to annoy me just as much as the main characters. They all just kept doing the same thing over and over. And I still don’t understand the ending.
I was so thrilled to read this book given all the amazing reviews. And then….. I loved the beginning but the second half lost me. Thank you for your review, I am happy I wasn’t alone in my opinion about the second half.
@@audradriscoll503 the second half was soooo vastly different in tone from the first half. The first half literally had me wanting to sleep with my lights on lol
Hi Violet, I definitely have to check this one out. Speaking of terrifying novels, I just finished The Return by Rachel Harrison today. This was my first novel by her and it was also the creepiest and most disturbing and unsettling novel I’ve ever read in my life. Have you read it yet? Would love to see a review on your channel of that one, I’m definitely a Rachel Harrison fan now.
@ I literally can’t wait to watch your review on it. Not sure why so many people on Reddit and Good Reads didn’t enjoy it, this novel terrified me and I don’t get scared easily.
Love the video! Another quick note about Felix is that he has decided to step away from writing. I don’t know what he said on Reddit, but I do know from a group that we are both in that he announced after the release of the prequel story The Church beneath the Roots that he wasn’t ready for the success of Stolen Tongues and that writing was no longer fun for him and his mental health is suffering for it. That’s not to excuse whatever he might have said. But it is a little more info on what is going on in his life. 🤷🏻♀️ and I agree, this book is so unsettling in so many places! ❤
@@trinathompson5006 thank you so much for sharing this!! I know very little about the author and wanted to share what my followers had shared with me. I’ll definitely be looking into this!
I have been looking forward to this review! I had a feeling we would be on the same page on this one, so to speak :) I enjoyed this book at first too, I didn't find it to be super scary, but that's perfectly fine, I don't really react to books that way. But then it just fell apart completely... I found Felix to be quite an uninteresting character, and the whole thing became so repetitive and any tension the book had in the beginning just fizzled out. I read it a couple of years ago, and I went in to it pretty blind, hadn't heard anything about the Native American's reactions, but I do remember thinking the treatment of those characters was really off putting. And very boring, from a story telling perspective. It felt like something we've seen a thousand times before. Blackwell is obviously talented, and had the chance to go in a completely different direction, but chose not to, and that's a shame. I know that the sequel (or is it prequel) to Stolen Tongues is out now, but I'm not gonna pick it up, I felt enough frustration with this one. Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts!
@@mariewesterlind I’m so happy so many people told me to check this book out!! It’s definitely worth reading for that first half alone, but oh my does it take a turn for the worst! Idk if I feel the need to read the sequel either tbh
Sure portraying native Americans in a ‘mystical’ manner is something of a trope, but everything ive have read or heard from Blackwell has been both respectful and affectionate towards that community and culture.
@@seagull8415 That’s great to hear! I’m very unfamiliar with Blackwell and this entire issue, so I just wanted to highlight that something was going on in my video since it had been brought to my attention.
I agree completely. I loved the first half of this book, but then it started seriously meandering. And I didn't find the reveals to be particularly original, and the plot holes were annoying. On the other hand, I also realize that this is a debut, and his skills will likely increase over time, so I'm definitely interested in checking out future works from him.
I loved how spooky and creepy the first part of the book was, by the end I was rooting for the evil thing.
