the blending of sadness and anger here is perfection. his body language and the softness of his voice at the beginning is sad, but he gets angry as the music picks up and it’s breathtaking. i’m sure any other children of broken homes here can agree it’s a cathartic performance to see - murray head snarling into a microphone with the collective rage we all wish we could confront our parents with. chess is such an important musical to me and this song is a big part of why
What I love with Murray Head in Chess is that he's not your traditional musicals singer - not like Tommy Korberg - and yet his voice is so perfect for this role.
Murray is the best at singing this song as it brings a lump to my throat every time he sings it and the passion for the part if there even though many others have sung it Murray’s version gets to me every single time.
OMG! Goosebumps! Is this available in its entirety somewhere? CHESS is the one and only musical that defined my childhood. There is nobody above or equal to the works of Benny, Björn and Tim ever in my mind!
+frasseh What about his brother's version? There's really not a clean recording anywhere so it's difficult to compare (but I think it's worth a listen)
Nothing against him, but Adam Pascal completely misses the point of "One Night in Bangkok." The song is supposed to be about a condescending villain, sneering at the people who go to prostitutes and fall for tourist traps. Adam Pascal plays it more like he's having fun with the locals than looking down on them.
Murray Head may not be the best technical singer but nobody puts as much emotion into their singing as he does. That is why nobody has surpassed him as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, IMO. He set the bar that others have been tried to reach, tried to copy and have failed.
Even for trained tenors this is a MONSTER of a piece. The amount of raw emotion and range this character in the musical needs to show throughout the entire production is hell on anyone’s vocals.
I wonder if it's almost harder for a trained singer - Murray Head is often singing slightly off the note and is prioritising emotion over technicality.
@@BlueLucario98 true but i can sing it, im not trained i just sang over time to get better but the 2 high notes the i was only her son and the last part then she said Whooo yeah i can sing those but its mixed so yeah, this song is dope though
How dare they cut away from Lasse playing one of the top 5 guitar solos of all time?? What hurts even more is that this is perhaps the only time he played it on video...
ua-cam.com/video/wt9A89GZ_Oo/v-deo.html I agree! I am an aspiring singer and I love to do covers. Please check out my cover I did of I know him so well, as well as I Don't Know How to Love Him and Can You Feel the Love Tonight! Thanks so much!
Personally prefer Adam Pascal singing this. He's got a much stronger voice. But I really liked this. I always have an appreciation and respect for the OG's.
Oddly, if you're singing the thoughts of a child, in a voice that we can all hear that child singing, it won't be in a thirty year old voice with the richness and vibrato of a very accomplished singer as Adam is. We will hear and feel the voice Murray presents on this song. The purposeful, let's say thinness of his voice. Maybe the original voice was selected for a reason. Mind you, this is my opinion and usually my opinion doesn't account for much.

I think Murray is a wonderful Singer and he is georgious to look at. Tommy Körberg he is ok but he is a big diva to be better than others and i dont like him. But Murray is wonderful in many ways
Came here to listen again to Lasse Wellander`s great guitar solo. R.I.P.
Me too. Miss him so badly
Me too.
Yes! Me too.

I agree....the balance of anger, despair and disgust in that last bit is absolutely gut wrenchingly perfect.
His performance is mesmerizing 🌷
His sincerity onstage is just stunning.
The guitarist at the end with this smug smile stole the show ))
Abba's guitarist Lasse Welander
He was having so much fun. The whole orchestra actually 😂💗

Murray Head is incredible. This is powerful and heart-wrenching. So well done.
Wonderful - the old rocker nailing the guitar solo at the end ... and loving it !
He would have been smashing solos his whole life. He's probably a bit freaked out he's there in a suit!
man did he ever---he is ALL in.....
It's actually ABBA:s guitar player - Lasse Wellander - so he's pretty famous after all :)

Listen to Anders Ekborg first, the swedish version.
Love the way he pours emotion into this song. This comes from a guy who is a metalhead at heart.
That solo! Lasse Wellander!

I'll second that question. I Didn't know there was a concert recording with the original cast.
Thanks for posting this Murray Head track. What a great singer!!
Sad or not, but Murray Head is the best to sing this song. Much better then all others.

Adam pascal is way better he's just screaming on this

James Fox on the 2009 UK Tour is worth a listen if you can catch him, he hit and held some ridiculous notes.
Good to see that Benny is playing live there!
Thanks for uploading. Love Murray's version of this.
My god….my heart breaks every time I hear this song with this guy. 😭👌 💔
Just so wonderful music mmm made in Sweden🇸🇪Forever in my ❤️
Lasse Wellander will live forever

artsy gala he really is an amazing singer! It's a shame there isn't more stuff from him floating around!!
You obviously haven’t heard Drew Sarich be Judas
Not now....in his twenties maybe.x.
Agreed! He has such a unique voice and such passion.

How it should be sung. Beautiful. Thanks.
I love the guitarist - he's clearly having way too much fun jamming in front of a full symphony orchestra.
I'm searching for the whole concert televised in the 80's. Anyone got it? Please upload!
Its all on youtube but in 4 parts under chess part 1-4
Woaaaoo! Benny Andersson, my hero! Notice he’s playing on his GX-1. The ”Dream Machine ” (Stevie Wonder)...
Apparently this song is called Pity the singer in musical circles since it's very hard to sing.
Even for trained tenors this is a MONSTER of a piece. The amount of raw emotion and range this character in the musical needs to show throughout the entire production is hell on anyone’s vocals.
It seems pretty brutal.

Lasse's Wellander great solo!
Loved seeing Prince Albert of Monaco rocking out on the guitar solo at the end!

Amazing
Wow. He looks so much like his brother.
I’ve been rewatching Buffy and listening very carefully when Giles sings 😂
I can hear Peter Gabriel singing this and once I do the music sounds so much like early Genesis.
I prefer the chess in concert version with Adam pascal but credit where credit is due.
very nice
How strange this feels.
P. S. We fed on your heartblood. Perhaps that what made us survive.

them there be some very tough vocal chords.... In the concept album -- he really belts some of those notes and sustains them.
Chills

Weird thing about Murray's voice - he sounds like he's stretching himself an octave before he actually hits the top of his range.
Yo you heard Raúl Esparza do this song? It's 👌💯

Not even close to Anders Ekborg's version of this song. Not even close.
Hey everyone, listen to Peter Jöback's cover of this. It's so much more powerful
Don't think he has the right voice for this song... He's clearly straining on the high Cs, not in a good way.
Well, it's much better on the studio version.
Is there a good way to strain ?
Anders Ekborg's version is so much better.
