MAKING-OF AVAILABLE: • Say hi, Mimi! - Making of
My 2nd Blender test. This one is much more ambitious than the last one since it tackles Grease Pencil (amazing tool btw, and not too hard to use in this case), some rigging (mainly modifying an existing rig), and much more extensive compositing.
Also learning DaVinci Resolve (more extensively, though I'm yet to fully master it at the moment).
A huge shoutout to @hisanimations and the entire TF2-Blender community for the tools and tips. 👍

Credits (please correct me if I'm wrong):

(My modifications consists on removing facial features for Grease Pencil overdraw, adding a lattice for jaw deformations, modifying materials, adding bones for the hairs, and switching all rotation orders from quaternions to euler).
Spy's voice comes from different movie clips with Thierry Lhermitte (in particular "Le père Noël est une ordure" from 1982 and "Le Dîner de cons" from 1998)
No AI was used there, it's pure voice mixing. (Figured I might leave that note just in case) 😉

I know this sounds ambitious (even I had to do a lot of experimentations on my part), but I hope this will set a new standard on how Mimi should be animated. She has one of the most beautiful designs I've seen as of late, and she's well deserving to be animated on a level worthy of the design.

The 2D facial overlay effect is surprisingly fitting! Makes Mimi way more expressive, would be cool to see more grease pencil animations like these.

They're not just 2D, on a couple of frames you can see the shadow on the teeth, and the side view shows that the mouth is not just drawn on.

It took me a few times to realize the clicking at 0:21 was Spy trying to go invisible and not Mimi trying to shoot while out of ammo

I honestly think it’s wholesome about Mimi sentry and Engineer being father and daughter, I guess engineer got a little lonely in both the battlefield and workshop and decided to build himself a robot daughter.

If you're trying to set the standard for Mimi, I gotta say, that bar is high. The subtle details of her lights' glow to reflect her mood. The economical use of the stock sentry sounds to convey language. The mix of blender with hand drawn, chef's kiss. It's a lot of effort but if anyone shares the love and appreciation for this world and its characters, they will venture down the long path to mimic your mimi.
Yeah this is a high bar indeed. xD
But at least the goal is set, and it doesn't have to be perfect just to be good.

Mimi was an interesting concept for humanised sentry, and I really loved her design. So it was mostly a shame that she was viewed as a "threat" and was used mostly in animations that
A. Involve her beind killed off by a TF2 character with no remorse (to signify how much the tf2 community hated mimi's existence) And
B. Not so safe animations (which further boosted the hate against her)
And this, is just beautiful. I always wanted her to be done justice, and this ticks all boxes. From her portrayal of being Engi's daughter to being a relatively shy type of character. Not to mention the already fluid animation.
This is simply amazing and You have my approval.

I like how Mimi was originally roasted for being another palpable R34 source, but through time evolved into a wholesome daughter character for Engineer. Especially in this case, if you turn on subtitles.

Thismis actually the most expressive animation ive ever seen. It is peak cuteness. The sound she makes when she yells at engie, the genuine flinch, the awkward smile, and of course her slow flare up. I honestly cant think of a more expressive 3d animation peice.

After thinking about this video, I might actually start donating to That Gray Cartoon Pony. It makes me very happy knowing that Gray is still enjoying their hobby and putting out amazing and heartwarmingly silly videos. Speaking of amazing, HOW THE HECK ARE THOSE ANIMATIONS SO LIFE-LIKE?!?! The quality of this animation trumps Motion Capture and surpasses AAA games and even God of War with it's movie-like production.
Reference footage, a decent workflow, hand-animation, proper education, practice, and love.

Only took 16 years but the TF2 community has finally gotten around to making gajinkas of the Engineers buildings.
I love how smooth this is! The movements feel natural, and the way the eye and mouth blend perfectly despite appearing to be drawn by hand is super well done!
Sounds are well done too, really ties this whole thing together.
Overall, this may be short but it is damn impressively done!

Does anyone else LOVE how Mimi is animated so realistically?
According to the "Making of" video, this was because Gray literally acted it out themself, and used their movements as a reference.
Something I noticed is that at 0:08 Mimi closes her eyes and looks sad when aiming, maybe that means she doesn’t like killing?
I think she was just squinting her eyes to see her target
I think she was startled and was going to shoot the startler in the face.
Best Mimi sentry animation
It’s not just being like “oooh she hot” (not all of Mimi’s content does that, but way too much of it does), it’s showing what she would (maybe) be like as a character
I’ve come to love the idea of Mimi, as engine’s sort-of daughter. A dad/daughter dynamic is just so endearing and, dare I say it, legitimately wholesome.
Mouth and facial animations being present even as early as 0:05 _(where it would be super easy to not animate and just hide them)_ is a clear sign of some great craftsmanship.
This just melted my heart lmao. I love the little details too, like how the light on her head goes from red to pink when she got rlly embarrassed, and how when she waves her gun it sounds like there are bullets rattling around inside

Oh my God, everything about this is so great. Literally having to replay this video multiple times just to go frame-by-frame and appreciate the detail and smoothness of her hand-drawn expressions, the subtle smear frames, and the overall attention to detail in this animation. Not to mention, the sound quality being top tier. Even down to hearing the ammunition inside Mimi's hand rattling when she sheepishly waves.
It's just *SO GOOD.*
Dude watching this is pure animation bliss, the drawn expressions on her face, the detail in the hair moving, and the smears when the arms raise up as well as the sound design is beautiful

I love this type of Mimi compared to the rest, seeing her get embarassed over something as simple as being on camera is so adorable especially for a father daughter relationship between her and engie, also I absolutely adore the animation style of 2d faces on top of 3d models, it gives a whole nother level of expressionism and character to these models, keep up the great work man!

(Opinion) I don't really like the other ones, they lack the "Mimi element", people try so hard to make them more like Mimi they forget to make them more unique and they come out kinda half baked
Which bots don't you like? Personnally i think senthia (the normal sentry variant) is okay since they're essentially the upgrade to mimi for intense battles. Level 1 and 2 look off tho.
But yea,i agree with you though. It feels like alot of them try to replicate the mimi feel without diverting too much besided maybe the dispenser.

Holy crap, this is the smoothest, most fluid animation I’ve seen. I know this was made in blender but Jesus Christ, you even made really smooth 2d animation with the face! You made the most life like robot I’ve ever seen! I really want to see more of this type of animation on the channel. Amazing work!

This Mimi was so much more expressive. It caught me off guard - I only really found out about Mimi and her sisters recently, so seeing this version really caught me off guard
I should also add that I loved her first model first, I'm just saying the expressions here were amazing
Also, even if this doesn’t end up being a standard for Mimi, this is still the best one imo just by how fluid she is, and even the little lights shining depending on her mood

Okay, i have an idea for an animation, Engineer, Dispenser woman and Mimi (and maybe the teleporter if they already made a modle for her) are trying to take a family photo, Mimi is trying to get out of the photo by running away, then Engineer takes out the Rescue Ranger and teleports her into his arms (you should include a metal restocking sound afterwards because it take 100 metal to teleport buildungs, and engi will be standing next to the dispencer)
Honestly, this is the first time of Mimi being animated that doesn't feel just "off"

Since there is plenty of praise for the animation, I’m gonna say this short alone made me want to see all Engi’s holiday and Birthday photo’s of him and Mimi.
That is if she doesn’t hide them first, but he seems to proud of her here to let that stop him.
And I never really kept up with the humanized sentry guns in the fandom, so that’s saying something.

Im not gonna lie this is the most WHOLESOME mimi sentry video i have seen so far! I really like how she is actually really shy instead of the really sassy anime-like character that she is made out to be in... other... videos. But the best part of it all is how she is animated, using the 2d face design as the main point of intrest! i doubt many people would have ever thought about truely animating a 2d face over a 3d model or even bothering to try to begin with! I think a new achievement has been made in the world of 3d animation today because of your efforts. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, the OG mimi model has a sort of anime vibe with the eyes and teeth (which remind me of the TFC version of the sentry gun), its probably the face that made people make her behave the way she does in their animations.
