- Part 1 of 5 of a TV documentary about the great Donegal fiddler Johnny Doherty. Made by Ulster Television, and first aired on RTE on 04/09/1972.
The original summary:
"Tinsmith, storyteller and traditional fiddler, John Doherty, still travels the hills of Donegal. Here he talks to Sean O'Haughey of the Irish Folklore Commission."
I love to see this being of Irish descent from the Appalachian mountains here in the USA it very nice to see where our tradition came from and how it still holds true today.I come from a line of fiddlers and myself being a fiddler it is very Interesting to see how it traces all the way back across the pond to the old country. #irishpride
If you don't mind me asking, what part of the Appalachians are you from? My grandmother is from Maggie Valley, NC. She grew up there in a one room house in the woods with her eight siblings

Great documentary w remarkable footage of Irish culture.
Great stuff - the days before the brand-consultants set upon the west of Ireland with their Wild Atlantic Way and fake salmon.
I wish I could've met him!!
Thank you for sharing this history!
This is just great, thanks for posting. Hearing the Donegal speech (not to mention the music) is lovely and brings back fond memories of visiting Doherty relations there.
great stuff, ive to watch the other 4 now.
thanks that's brilliant!
thank you so much for posting this
God rest and protect the the great people of Ireland ❤
Great video. *****
Excellent,
@fgx900 the name of that song at 6:36 is "the flowers of red hill".
This Donegal version is usually known as "Old Cuffe Street." Different second part from "Flowers of Red Hill."
I have a humble question. I certainly mean no disrespect -- my family name is Quinn -- but the gentleman carries no suitcase. How did he keep clean clothes? Seems an obvious question. He makes me so proud of my Irish heritage.
BlindTom61 it is staged for the tv camera crew,so they are probably minding his suitcase for him
I love song at 6:36 anyone know the name of this song ?
plz thx
Wonderful!
Is it perhaps available on DVD?
🍀🇮🇪
Are the other two playing "Cuffe Street" Frank and Con Cassidy? Or if not, who?
Larry Sanger It certainly sounds like the recording of "Cuffe Street" made by Frank Cassidy and John Doherty off the "Níl Gar Ann!" CD showcasing Cassidy. A fantastic duet if I may say so myself.
Bring back the Derry/Killybegs Train
Go raibh máith agat, Martin
This is awesome, but is his fiddle out of tune or just me . No disrespect meant
FortWarren Not out of tune, just tuned down, as was often the case in the Donegal tradition, and others across Ireland as well, before the "standdardization" of Irish music in the 60s.
