My favorite 'short practice' routine is to a) start the metronome at a different tempo than I used yesterday, b) start playing whatever comes to mind, and c) see what happens. My goals are to bury the click and pay attention. Within a minute or two, I almost always come across either something that's awkward/sucky that I want to improve or something that's cool that I want to reinforce and explore. Sometimes I have an agenda before sitting down (i.e. I haven't worked on thing x in a while, etc.) and so I dive right into that. I rarely get into ruts because there are so many things I need to both maintain and improve

Definitely would recommend inverse/open-handed drumming, just trying to do what you already do but flip it on its head. At first my right-handed ghost notes on the snare were really, really rough, but being somewhat ambidextrous, as it were, is really useful for extending your general repertoire. Easily one of the things that improved my playing the most, makes me wonder what low-hanging fruit I've been missing all along.

That’s a great suggestion! I’ve done that a time or two along the way, probably wouldn’t do that if I ONLY had 5 minutes but if I had 6? Absolutely!
