  • Wow, it's been awhile since my last one. Sorry for the delay. Took some time to edit. This is an a complete overview and guide of the care of the Aphonopelma seemanni tarantula. A very beautiful T but not recommended for handling because of its nervous temperament.

    Yours is so calm and docile! Mine is very jumpy and skittish. I’m not sure I’d be able to pinch grab her. Even a paintbrush touch makes her go into threat posture

    Ty for this! I love my Seemani. She's currently molting, the pet store had adult crickets in with her and I could tell she was pre-molt- had to get her out of there. The beginning of week two and she's molting as comfortably as possible with no pests...bugging her...haha.

    Serpentarium is a good store in the U.S. Not sure if they are all over, but I know they're good in California. According to your prices, though, they might be too expensive. I just bought an A Purpurea for 42 bucks. 3rd instar.
    By the way, do you know anywhere online I could search for a small Temprature/Humidity measure device from? I looked at local shops and they're all just too large to put in my little habitat. I only want something small enough to put in for a moment to measure the humidity and the Temprature once a day.

    I recently brought one of these as a juvenile. It’s my first T. as an owner, but I’ve looked after many before due to my animal care qualifications. I’m still an amateur though.
    However, I seem to have an issue with mine. He/she was very docile when I got them, but they were kept in cricket boxes with no water bowl. After spending a few hours head in bowl after getting them home, it seemed to invigorate them pretty darn well. After being fine to care for, it seems to have turned quite defensive. Not in the typical way either, they have become quite simply aggressive, to the point I can’t even change the water without it coming for my arm. Despite waiting for them to calm down afterwards, they’ll pace for an hour or so after being disturbed in any way. I’ve had them for a few weeks now and it’s only recently that it’s become near un-keepable. Any suggestions? I don’t particularly want to get rid of them, but it’s a real struggle at this point. Gorgeous arachnid.

    interesting regarding feed response, my g.Pulchripes went through a moult a while back and is in a crazy hungry phase at the moment. anything that goes in the tank, food or not, gets attacked without any warning. I brushed the abdomen with the round end of a soft plastic pippet and wham, I had to gently remove it from the burrow where my T was holding on with its feet! and the pippet is obviously now useless as it's full of holes!? hates Tongs too. Or do I just have a psycho T?

      +Marcell Love Marcell, You really have to know the temperament of your individual well before you can be able to pick them up like that. I only pinch grab my REALLY CALM ones so I don't recommend doing this at all for the reasons you stated. You also need a firm grip. Sadly, this female passed away early last year. I have a new one but there's no way I'm pinch grabbing him. He's very spunky lol

    Are zebra and gold knee tarantulas the same species? I just got one but the previous owner didn't know what it was. They look very similar how do I tell them apart??

    • @Jon3800
      @Jon3800  5 років тому

      Elizabeth Monty hi Elizabeth...when you mean “gold knee tarantulas” do you actually mean Chaco golden knees (Grammostola pulchripes)?
      If so they are COMPLETELY different. If you refer to mythbuster video 20, I show off this species. They’re big black species top and underside with prominent golden knees while the species featured here is blue, with gold stripes and with an orange underside. If you want email me at slickjon@hotmail.com with a CLEAR pic of the T in question and I can help ID it properly for you.
      Unfortunately Common names with tarantulas have become an extremely bad practice because pet stores try to market 20 different common names to describe one species. For example “zebra” name can be used in a dozen species like Costa Rican zebra (A.seemanni), Thai Zebra (C.albostriatum), Brazilian Zebra/striped leg (N.chromatus), Pink zebra beauty (E.campestratus) all of which have completely different temperaments, care requirements. To as misinformed owner they can technically be considered “golden knees” because their leg patterns are golden in all of these species.
      Hope this helps

    hey jon i am so happy today i woke up this morning and my mature female A Seemanni laid an egg sack (uploaded a video on my channel) it turns out that she was wild caught and gravid i guess i got a bonus $28 T plus a nice egg sac weeks later, any advice on how too make sure the hatching goes smoothly? im still a beginner despite having a growing T collection lol

    • @Jon3800
      @Jon3800  7 років тому

      Tom, I've NEVER experienced an A.seemanni sac. Apart from the expalanations of eggsacs highlighted in T mythbuster video 40, you should leave the sac undisturbed, keep the enclosure humid, and pull it out after 30-35 day and incubate them in an incubator similar to what I've shown in my incubator video

    Samuel, I did discuss premolt behavior in a plenty of vids, so I'm not going to go into detail... Avics show the same conditions as any other T in premolt. The only thing different...the bald spot will NOT be visible (since avics do not throw urticating, they rub it off) and they web profusely right before they molt. Just like my P.miranda did in feeding video 72. Recorded her intense web building, then molted the day after. Look for those.

    John, a girl just sold me one of these today. It's a healthy and awesome spider and I am not bothered regardless -but she told me she is a 'Costa Rican Zebra' and yet mine is lighter brown with less defined leg stripes. Its about 3 to 3.5 inches long, but quite grown-on and stocky. Could it be a different species? (I dont care anyhoo because the spider is awesome).

    • @Jon3800

    • @DJ-eg1zg
      @DJ-eg1zg 9 років тому

      Jon3800 Hi John,
      I couldnt borrow a decent camera yet, but I have found out by looking online. it's a variant called 'Sp. Nicuragua'. Its mid brown with cream white stripes. It'll get more brightly coloured with age. It's also one of the worst tempered spiders I have yet to see. I am awaiting a priority order on a critter keeper, but at the moment she's in a large tub. This morning I tried to move her bottle-cap where she has her water and she dashed forward with old-world speed and threw multiple strikes at the tongs. I own haplopelmas, a chilobrachys Vietnam Blue, a bad tempered cyriopagopus, pokies and an OBT to give you an idea of what I'm used to -but I can tell you this zebra is NASTY. Do you think it could be because she doesn't have a hide yet?

    • @Jon3800
      @Jon3800  9 років тому

      Damien, it could be the brown morph of this species, it's quite possible if it has the SAME features as this species does (orange spinnerets, underside) individuals vary but this species can be nasty. That female had struck at me a couple of times

    • @DJ-eg1zg
      @DJ-eg1zg 9 років тому

      Jon3800 Yes, she has the orange spinnerets so she's probably just a morph. I think of her as a Haitian brown with leg decorations ha ha. Have you yet to encounter a Vietnam Blue?

      I've hears that a few of them floating around, but never saw one in person

    1) Pokies: I'm sure you've saw glimpses of codedark2's MM P.regalis mating with my female last year and explained this in mythbuster video 23 where every pokie was covered....Pokies only have bulbous palps.. they do NOT have hooks. It applies to every single species.
    2) It is probably fasting.
    3) Sizes will vary from 3-4.5 inches. It would VERY obvious to spot a MM GBB at that size. They stick out like sore thumbs. MMs have the same features like the MM A.seemanni, hooks + palps

    I just picked up an unsexed A. seemanni the other day. I suspect a male. He is far more aggressive than my research had suggested. Hopefully he calms down as he gets to know me. I'm not sure if he is done growing. I'm not sure how to measure him.

    • @Jon3800
      @Jon3800  9 років тому +1

      Alex Stamm Tarantulas unfortunately are incapable of getting to know their owners. A.seemanni in my experience can be defensive when they can be so maybe yours had an off day. As mentioned, A.seemanni's grow to a max of 5''. In older videos, I show how to measure tarantulas. I measure them from tip of the first leg to tip of the hind leg

  • @budgetfood7566

    Mine is a good demo for people who claim that I should handle my T's as "My friend gets his out all the time" people do not seem to believe me that T's are not really good pets for that. Mine has a main defense mode of charging as soon as the lid is unlatched. It is safe, because I do not handle it, but it is a fast hard charge and it shows people that although they might have seen a T in docile mode they are quite capable of moving faster than you would think possible. I am sure if I was to handle it then it would have had a fall by now. They are not overly agro, like the OBT, as after they charge they tend to calm down. But you never know when they are going to bolt, they do not seem to do a threat pose first, it will catch you out, and you will jump. A great spider IF you are a tongues, brush and cup keeper... not so good if you are a fingers and hands type of keeper.

    I bought a spider from a pet shop it didn't have a scientific name, it just said bahian bird eating spider on the glass. It was the diameter of a quarter when I got it. It molted four or five times the first six months, and is now almost the diameter of a dinner plate. I know its not a goliath.

    My A. semani, which was Robc's at one time, is haplopelma nasty. It flips out when you feed it or fill its water bowl. Surprisingly however, it is still handleable. Forget pinch grabbing it like you do with yours. I need a prodding stick to get her out. She'll flick her legs up and wrap her two tusks around stick. She can be lifted up with gentle force like a pit bull. I'll gently strike the floor with my hand to move her towards my other. That's how I handle her.

    Ok so I understand hobbyists frown upon handling T's, but I just purchased one of these beauties and all I can think about is holding him. Ive owned emperor scorpions and used to carry them around the house without worry, but now that I have a T in front of me, Im hesitant to hold it. After seeing how quickly they can grab and tag something with their fangs, Im just unsure. A scorpion will at least give you plenty of warning before it stings you.

      Zinnshady24 it really all depends on your T's personality and current mood. Some are more handleable than others, and some are just grumpy little guys.
      You ALWAYS want to check their temperament before handling! Use a pencil/pen/paintbrush/etc. to tap the T's leg a couple times. If he reacts defensively or aggressively, best to let him be. If not, you can coax him onto your hand (or pick him up as shown if he'll let you).
      Hope that helped! :)

    After seeing your comment below, I decided to remove my comment on your video, and blocking you. A kid like you that makes fun of me doesn't deserve my help. Have a nice day.
