I agree I mean I get the only use one mirrro, if the trailer didn't move. But since it does I think it would be smart to use both. But my instructor said use driver.
just learned straight backing yesterday and this is exactly how i decided was best for me wherever im seeing too much trailer small adjust toward that side and bam straight back and the other side starts to appear . and it really is very small adjustment needed, now to add to the challend my training area is on a slanted hill with a speedbump in it aswell. so i got mirrors shaking all over the speedbump when the hill changes trailer wants to do some tweaking and this method got me through all that . overall whenever i see to much of that trailer i steer toward it and right back to center ! great video !
Yesterday, my instructor placed the cones and he asked me to back up in straight line. I failed repeatedly, again and again. It became a mightmare! I had never experienced anything like this! This was like nothing I had ever done in my life. I was thinking to leave the shool and apply to a trucking company for training. I thought I could never learn this in school. Today, I asked the instructor to remove the cones and I told him I wanted to back up alongside the curb only, looking through passenger side rear mirrors. So, for 3 hours I steered back alongside the curb and finally figured it out. What I figured out is exactly as shown in these nice technical videos. I focused on the "FLAT" mirror with which I could see the whole right side trailer wall. I paralleled the trailer wall with the curb (in this video the both sides of the trailer are paralleled with both side cones.) and I backed up. I saw myself in this video. The principles are exactly as shown in this video. 12 oclock. then 9 oclock then 3 oclok. Steer a little to the right and left. Make minor steering moves. Move slow. Use the clutch to control the speed. See it, feel it.
That's a great story sule man! Thank you for finding our videos and for not giving up! Many students have a terrible first day. You're normal. Stay safe out there.
I did the backing straight on a 28ft it’s a lot harder moves way more than a 53ft but what work for me was turning my steering wheel where you could see the tire and if you didn’t see the tire on one side then check the other side and turn the steering wheel on the side where you see the tire and it help keep it straight well for me it did .
Thanks for these videos. Just started school and the guys here need to take lessons from you guys. Have an old guy screaming instructions to you from a golf cart. If I was in your area I'd come to your school. Thanks again!
Great Video, my instructors is teaching us the same way you are doing it. I would like to suggest, it would be helpful if you showed the steering wheel movements. Once I looked at my instructor and seen he was using one hand and placed his hand at 12 then all his turns would be small 9, 12, 3, I instant started straight backing better. thanks your videos are very helpful
You have to watch both mirrors, William. You're looking for the SIDE of your trailer. Don't confuse the side with the front. The front of your trailer sucks eggs and deserves to be ignored for an eternity...scratch that, 2 eternities. (Please excuse that drama). You have to know what your trailer is doing before you can tell it what to do. Spot the side of your trailer in both mirrors as you are backing. When you see more of the side of your trailer in one mirror, steer a little toward that mirror. As the trailer moves behind the truck, steer back to center. Then watch both mirrors again. Repeat.
@@Cdlcollege Hello! Does this also work when doing angle back up? "When you see more of the side of your trailer in one mirror, steer a little toward that mirror. As the trailer moves behind the truck, steer back to center. Then watch both mirrors again. Repeat"? Thanks.
My school taught us to use just the left mirror and use the trailer abs light to guide the trailer in. Talk about a steep learning curve with only seeing half the truck.
Adam Try to make a video for how to do setup/swing. i.e. If you do driver side offset and after that, u have to do the same side parallel then you have to do setup or swing
I've been learning to back this week and I'm struggling. I've been searching for videos and found yours. I like your videos but, it would help to be able to view the wheel as you describe your actions as well as your mirror view.
Just found your videos, and they rule!!!! I just got my A license, but have no real world experience.Any best or most helpful tips,or most important things to focus on when starting out? Thanks so much,Joe
New Driver Things to Remember: watch your trailer through every turn. After graduating, many students forget to watch their trailer during turns. Out straight, turn late when you have a trailer. Every turn you make is on behalf of the trailer, not the truck. Check your mirrors every 10 seconds. Always know what's going on around your vehicle. Sitting 6 feet off the ground gives you a unique perspective. You can see things ahead of you earlier than the folks driving 4 wheelers. If you work for a decent outfit, you should be given plenty of time to deliver each load. Try to arrive at your destination as early as you can. It's better to wait to be unloaded, than to be late to your appointment. Thank you so much for your awesome comment, and for watching our videos. YOU rule, Joseph.
How do you "go back to the center"? By countersteering the same amount you steered, whether to the right or to the left? I am still struggling with understanding the basic dynamics of the infernal duo tractor-trailer.
Wait until you get to the Alley Dock, assuming you have to learn that maneuver. We have a simple technique to ace it without jackknifing. Check it out sometime: ua-cam.com/video/PqLEdFbCQa0/v-deo.html Thanks, again, for watching and learning.
great video for first timers. so when doing the straight back even the slightest bit of drift left or right you adjust the width of your hand stead. how long do you hold the correction?
You're not adjusting the width of your hand. You are steering about as much as the width of your hand (4-5 inches). Small steering correction for small trailer drifts. As soon as you see the trailer lining up behind the truck, return the wheel to center (now the trailer, truck, and steer tires are all in a straight line. Thanks for watching and commenting, John.
When do you straighten up the tires of the tractor after correcting? Do you go left AND right BEFORE you straighten up? Or left and straighten up, right and straighten up?
Doing the straight back it was very difficult for me I was given 3 days to learn it and because I wasn't able to get it right I was dropped from the class hopefully I get another chance somewhere else within the school thanks for the video
At the end of the video, you are steering a little to the right and then counter steering to the left, to straighten the truck, and repeating that until parallel to the cones correct?
Close! I am waiting for my trailer to drift to the left or right. When it does, I steer in the direction of the drift and watch my trailer as it moves behind the truck. Just before my trailer is behind the truck, I steer back to center. I then wait for my trailer to drift left or right and repeat the process.
@@Cdlcollege Ok, sorry, not the very very end. That is straight line backing when the trailer is already between the cones. I meant the maneuver starting from 9:40, in order to get even spacing between the cones and trailer and then making the trailer parallel for straight line backing. I kinda got lost @ 9:50 after you said "don't hold it for too long" then went silent for a few seconds.
Great video, thank you! Better if you show how exactly you steering. You said you steering just a bit, about 5-6 inches, so I have a picture of it. My question is: Do you countersteer? Just a bit of steering and back to the center?
Think about it this way. Ivan: to successfully straight back, your steer tires, the truck, and the trailer must all be in a straight line. So, when your trailer drifts to the right (or left) your vehicle is no longer in a straight line. Steering to the right will force your trailer back behind the truck. Just before the trailer is directly behind the truck, steer back to center. Now the steer tires, truck, and trailer will be in a straight line again. Hope this helps, mister.
@@Cdlcollege Appreciate your answer! When I was watching my teacher, sometimes he does counter steer, I don't know why, maybe when it is too much of drift to the side. But on the second lesson and after watching this video I noticed how important to watch both mirrors, especially right one. Thank you!
When you say steer a little to the right how much are you turning is it 12 to 2 or 3 or 5? And how long do you hold the steer before returning back to 12
Your trailer will tell you when to steer back to center, William. You should return the wheel to center just before the trailer lines up with the truck. Thank you for watching!
Sir how to get the trailer go more slower is pressing the clutch something I can consider? Thank you so much for this helpful video starting school pretty soon just got my permit today
Sir may I ask u one question about back. I saw ur each video and love it. But I m little confuse when I m backing trailer drift to left I steer to left according to drifting and when it go right I do steer right . I want to know when trailer came behind the truck after steering right then hold steer centre back
You see your trailer drifting to the left in the driver side mirror. Steer left to fix. Trailer moves right. Just before the trailer is behind the truck, steer back to center. Thanks for the question, karan!
It sure is...what is the best way to center the vehicle? My trainer says I need to straight up. While I do straighten up the truck is at a angle and I give up...
I'm assuming you mean center your vehicle in the lane when pulling forward. The best way to keep your vehicle centered is by watching your mirrors when you're pulling forward. You want to keep both lines of cones in your mirrors. If one line of cones begins to disappear from one of your mirrors, you're not pulling straight forward. In the video, I demonstrate how to do this. My head keeps moving from mirror to mirror. You can see the line of cones in my mirrors the entire time I'm pulling forward. I also show what you'll see in the mirrors following a crooked pull forward. Watch your mirrors pulling forward and backing up. Thanks, Sharen!
I'm having thee absolute hardest time doing this... Mainly because the schools trucks are terrible the steering wheels aren't straight when I'm 12 o clock the steering wheel Isn't its lots of play in there steering wheels wayyy more than 10 degrees... What can I do to get this right while dealing with this issue?
Hi, Elz. You'll appreciate the truck you drive at your first job if you're training on a beater. The key to straight backing is to watch both mirrors and correct a drifting trailer as early as possible. Steer toward the drift and then return the wheel to center as the trailer lines up behind the truck. The trailer will tell you how much to steer. Thanks for the question and for watching!
Elz Da Trucker our school has the same problem all the trucks that seem to drift quite drastically. If someone has driven before then they can do well. The rest of us are a little lost for quite some time. Hang in there keep watching videos of this quality and you will do fine best of luck Pam
My boyfriend wanted to know how long should you hold the wheel when you steer to a specific side to straighten it out evenly.. how you mentioned in the video..? Is it like for 5-15 seconds?
My question is where are your hands and the wheel when you say turn to the right? Are you turning the bottom of the wheel to the right or the top? This seems so easy but I am really getting thrown off while trying to back on my first day of training.
Ok!! N class for cdl. We r training n a sleeper Bert. We I do my straight back, i use both mirrors to correct the drift. The trainer close the curtain on the passenger side because he said I'm only suppose to use 1 mirror ( the driver side). Wtf!! How do i suppose to know what's going on, on the other side. His way makes it so difficult. I over steer, tracker doesn't b lined up wit the trailer. It's a wonder why students still doing just straight backs after 8 wks n class
You need BOTH mirrors to successfully straight back. What if a child (or puppy!) walks into your line of sight on the passenger side? Professional drivers use both mirrors when backing. You're being scammed.
It would help out alot if we could see your steering wheel as you back up. They tell us to turn the opposite of the way you want the trailer to go.......but that isn't what you say. You say, the trailer is going alittle to the left so you turn left. I'm confused.
Hahahahaha, I guess it is. Maybe I've been overthinking this? The trailer is veering off to the left and I don't want it to go to the left.......so I turn my steering wheel to the left so the back of the trailer goes to the right. I'll try that on Monday at school. Lol. Thanks.
Jovani!!!!!! Yes, watch your trailer very closely. As soon as it starts to move away from you, fix it! You'll be a professional in no time. Thank you for watching!
I am in CDL classes right now.......and our instructor has us with right hand on BOTTOM of steering wheel, left on window, using both mirrors. I'm finding it difficult to keep straight towards the end....keep losing end of trailer on the 240 ft. straightback lane.

But on the second lesson and after watching this video I noticed how important to watch both mirrors, especially right one. Thank you!
When you say steer a little to the right how much are you turning is it 12 to 2 or 3 or 5? And how long do you hold the steer before returning back to 12
I'm over steering I wish you could have shown the steering wheel
Your trailer will tell you when to steer back to center, William. You should return the wheel to center just before the trailer lines up with the truck. Thank you for watching!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you help a lot
Amazing, helped me a lot
Just did my first back 30 min ago i was,all over the place..so pissed..Im not use to sucking at something
It would help if you showed your hands on the steering wheel making adjustments as you go.
Sir how to get the trailer go more slower is pressing the clutch something I can consider? Thank you so much for this helpful video starting school pretty soon just got my permit today
Thx for posting this I got confused when doing it, because I didn’t know you were suppose to turn it the opposite way u wanna go lol
Great video oh my God
Is there a video for 45 backing to a dock?
In UA-cam, type 'CDL College Alley Dock'. We have an easy-to-understand video for you.
i have a question? do you keep your foot on the clutch when u backing?
Yes. We also control our speed with the clutch. We use the brake only to stop the vehicle. Thanks, Film Tastic!
CDL College, LLC thank u been looking everywhere for that answer
I was wondering the same thing about using the clutch when backing.
This video really helped me before my test and to understand a backup
Do cdl College, has location in new York ???
Really good I did really easy that way
Are we looking at the tires of the side of the trailer?
I'm at my 4th week and I'm super frustrated with backing
Ask me a specific question and I will help you, Sharen. Is straight backing getting the best of you?
It sure is...what is the best way to center the vehicle? My trainer says I need to straight up. While I do straighten up the truck is at a angle and I give up...
Thank you!
CDL College, LLC were practicing straight backing and we dont even have cones or parking lines lol
Im not sure why some of the time you say turn left then go back to straight and other times you say turn left and then turn right??
My boyfriend wanted to know how long should you hold the wheel when you steer to a specific side to straighten it out evenly.. how you mentioned in the video..? Is it like for 5-15 seconds?
When you're adjusting the steering wheel to make corrections... Are you turning the wheel from the bottom or top?
Right hand at 12oclock only use right arm to steer from 9oclock back to 3 back to 12
My question is where are your hands and the wheel when you say turn to the right? Are you turning the bottom of the wheel to the right or the top? This seems so easy but I am really getting thrown off while trying to back on my first day of training.
great video best ever seen on youtube ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you, Batikan!
We have videos for the other maneuvers, also (Offset, Parallel, and Alley Dock).
CDL College LLC Do you have POV for offset?
We do have an Offset video, but it is not POV.
Thanks, Chris.
@@Cdlcollege Thxs. The trainer said i'm suppose to use the driver mirror only.
It would help out alot if we could see your steering wheel as you back up. They tell us to turn the opposite of the way you want the trailer to go.......but that isn't what you say. You say, the trailer is going alittle to the left so you turn left. I'm confused.
Think about it. It's right in front of you.
Hahahahaha, I guess it is. Maybe I've been overthinking this? The trailer is veering off to the left and I don't want it to go to the left.......so I turn my steering wheel to the left so the back of the trailer goes to the right. I'll try that on Monday at school. Lol. Thanks.
Very helpful
Thanks, Richard! Happy to have helped you.
Thank you so much so confused I'm backing up
Jovani!!!!!! Yes, watch your trailer very closely. As soon as it starts to move away from you, fix it! You'll be a professional in no time. Thank you for watching!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, the trailer is always moving more left and always fail this I get so frustrated. what am I doing wrong?
Whats a little ? Do you hold the position until you start to see it center ?
I am in CDL classes right now.......and our instructor has us with right hand on BOTTOM of steering wheel, left on window, using both mirrors. I'm finding it difficult to keep straight towards the end....keep losing end of trailer on the 240 ft. straightback lane.
When you say steer right, are your hands on top of wheel or bottom??
Are you using the top mirrors for this maneuver? I was told to only use the bottom
Do youuuuuu have a video for offsetting.
Do you ever break while backing? Sometimes I feel that the vehicle is moving too fast in R.
I'm only in training, but pretty sure you use the clutch to stop or slow it down in reverse. Clutch in, to neutral and brake if you need.
