I’m at trucking school right at this moment and I was getting frustrated with backings up, looked at your video and all of sudden everything became clear! You are a life saver, thank you
That would’ve been a huge help when I was first learning! I was oversteering & finally had someone else let me know why I was having such a hard time. I know this is old but your explanation would’ve made that so much easier. I’ll be watching & subscribing as I’m going for my first job next week and can use all help with backing maneuvers!
Got yelled at my 1st day backing because my “instructor” could not tell me how never go past 9:00 or 3:00 on Correcting REALLY!!!! You are the best Subscribed thanks
Thanks so much for explaining it how you did. The trainers here don’t teach anything, watch me struggle, and laugh at me. I’m not going to give up. You’re much appreciated!
I’m at school, my fourth day. My straight back was horrendous, I couldn’t keep my combo straight. I just got out of the truck after watching your video, and got every straight back in between the cones for the first time. Thanks
Hopefully it helps me tomorrow! I'm having one hell of a time and my instructor just says small turns but doesn't give any real examples or techniques like 9 to 3 and hold for 1 to 2 seconds. I hope this works tomorrow when I go back to school! Thank you kindly good Sir!
I was at my Longshoreman training for 6 hours yesterday trying to back the freaking yard dog truck back. I kept drifting off not understanding why. My trainer watched me screw up the whole time. I went to my car for a break frustrated went to UA-cam and came across your video. After watching I was able to get it done in 30 minutes. You are God sent
I still use this to this day....I always tell people to "turn towards the problem" meaning if your trailer is drifting to the right, then turn the wheel to the right to straighten it out.... drifting to the left, turn the wheel to the left and it'll straighten out.....whatever helps you remember it easier will work...to all the CDL students, youll get it! I promise.
My trainer sucks big time! I just started school yesterday and I was having the hardest time straight and all he could do was yell and not give me any pointers and, he told me don't use both mirrors and then I was confused!!! So with being said I will do exactly what you said and go there in the morning and kick butt!! Thank you so much Mark
@@RushinTruckin I kicked butt just using the technique you taught and it worked so well that I was able to move to my offset backing and aced that to!!! Thank you so much
After a couple days in class & in a semi truck, I developed a profound respect for truck drivers! We have to perform a straight back, offset back, & 90 degree alley dock in my state. A good straight back is an essential part of all three maneuvers. Even though I was learning how to do this through a CDL class, I felt this video was extremely helpful. Using small steering motions to slowly move the trailer over is crucial. I went from thinking I couldn't do this to I can do this! I passed all three of my CDL tests (pre-trip inspection, backing maneuvers, & road test) on my first try this past Saturday. Moving my 12 o'clock hand towards the drift & then back really helped me get through the backing maneuvers. I thought that I could have done better with my backing, but the third party CDL tester actually complimented me. He's said, "It's been quite some time since he had someone do so well." I wasn't expecting to hear that, but I was thrilled just the same! Regardless of the maneuver - once I got those rows of cones in both mirrors, I knew I had it! Thanks again for your help offered in this video clip.
The alley dock is very difficult to explain via text but I'll try. Start with your tandems at the 43' mark and your trailer bumper 10' out and 10' away from the closest corner of the spot you want to put it in. Before moving at all, turn your wheels all the way to the right. Roll back slowly holding the wheels there. Watch the trailer tires. The second they go from rolling backwards to sliding only, STOP! Cut the wheels all the way to the left to straighten things out. This is where it gets very difficult to explain... timing and corrections. Each trucks turning radius is slightly different which means they straighten out quicker or slower than the other. At this point, your trailer tires should be in 1/4 line with the opening of the spot. Now you need to pay attention to your tail swing. *this is where experience and practice come into play to be able to anticipate what's going to happen and how/when to correct it.* Problem scenario 1 and how to fix it: if you notice the nearest corner of the trailer is turning too much and is going to cross over the boundary line (ie hit the truck in the spot next to you), STOP! Turn your wheels all the way to the right then slowly move forward about 6' then STOP. Turn your wheels all the way to the left then slowly back up again. What this does is reduce the jack knife angle. If done correctly, you should only have to do this once, twice max! Problem scenario 2: you notice your trailer 2/4 isn't turning enough and will cross over the far boundary (ie hit the truck in spot on the other side of the trailer), STOP! With the wheels still turned all the way to the left, pull forward 4'-6', STOP, turn your wheels all the way to the right then back up 1' NO FURTHER! Turn your wheels all the way to left and slowly back up. What this does is increase the jack knife angle to get the trailer to turn quicker. Using the above information, you should be able to compete the maneuver. VERIFY with the person giving you the cdl test but I believe you get 3 goals and 3 or more pull ups (depending if you used any on your previous maneuvers) You only have 70' from the opening of the spot which may not sound like a lot but it's plenty. I hope this is clear enough for you to understand
My instructor told me to look at the numbers on the bulkhead instead of tail of the trailer and he never told me how long I need to wait and how much to turn when manuvering. You taught me way more in just 10 minutes than my instructor did in 3 days. Thank you!

I am learning back up this week, and am really struggling. Tomorrow when I go I am gonna practice this lesson. You made my concept very clear thanks. God bless you my brother.
Thank you very much for this video. I Had my first day of yard training at CDL school today and it was a struggle. I did exactly what you said new students do. I believe this is going to help a lot. Thanks again, much appreciated.
This video has opened my mind for the straight backing test at school, I was frustrated that I couldn't keep my trailer straight. The simple clock positions, what to notice in the big mirror's and minimal wheel movement is key. Pov reference is a game changer. Thank you for this video.
This is the best technique video I've seen for hand positioning and how the movements influence the trailer. I haul boats and typically have great visibility when backing. Driving a TT for the CDL test was a very different experience relying exclusively on side mirrors and flying blind on offsets. With two days left until test day, you saved me. My sincere thanks for posting this. 🤜🤛
Thanks man. I just started straight line backing n My instructor talks to the other students who have finished more than he helps us. This video gives me more confidence to go out and do actually what you’re showing. You just got a new subscriber
Your video was truly a blessing for me. I’m going to the driving school at a college, paid a lot of money to go. Two days into backing my sorry instructors told me maybe I wasn’t cut out for the job. After watching the video, I smoked it. They would only let me look at one mirror, and they made it so hard. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. I was in school today doing my straight line backing and did terrible. I actually wanted to give up but after watching this video, I’m going to give it another shot.
Today was my first day at the yard and backing was giving me the most problems. We're also parallel parking and alley docking but I just did str8 backing ten times and was def oversteering and making things worse so tomorrow I am definitely going to try this!
@@sanric4076 it’ll definitely get better just takes practice! I’m doing a lot better on my straight back, I’m on lane change and it’s going good ! Next will be the alley dock I can’t wait !
Why do these CDL schools tell us not to be watching UA-cam videos on backing a semi truck. Watching this video I think is going to help me. At the school, no instructor has time for you. I failed my test two times already, but I told myself I’m not giving up.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us beginning truck driving school. I’ve been in training and know trainer has given me as much details as this video you have made. Thanks so much for making the straight backing maneuver more easy and understanding to us beginners.

Just started today! Clutch, no problem, shifting no problem, but straight back I didn't get it today. The technique taught is "turn your steering wheel towards the problem" and it just doesn't click with me. Watching your video just gave me a different perspective that I know will aid me in conqueroring this maneuver tmrw! Ty!!💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
This is the 5th video I’ve come across this evening and I am appalled with how many students come to the comments to state that their instructors did a poor job explaining to them what you guys come on UA-cam and do an AMAZING job with. I’m in trucking school right now and my instructors are not making it any easier for me with how impatient they are with my backing. After watching this video, I am far more confident that I will do better tomorrow! Thank you!
Excellent information! In fact, I agree that you explained the maneuvers clearly and concisely, better than the school that I am attending! Thank you! 🙏 EMaris.

I am in CDL school right now and totally failed the straight back. This method will help me so much! So glad I came across the video! Thanks for the help! ❤🎉
Thank you! This should help a lot. I'm training to be a switcher at Fedex and the guys they have training me aren't able to explain to me how to correct the issue. You've explained it perfectly and demonstrated it very well. All I need to do now is practice it.

Thanks again for your help offered in this video clip.
That’s awesome! Congrats!
That is great 👍 I am about to test soon I am so nervous about the yard test any pointers did you get thr 90 alley dock?
The alley dock is very difficult to explain
via text but I'll try.
Start with your tandems at the 43' mark
and your trailer bumper 10' out and 10'
away from the closest corner of the spot
you want to put it in. Before moving at all,
turn your wheels all the way to the right.
Roll back slowly holding the wheels there.
Watch the trailer tires. The second they go
from rolling backwards to sliding only,
STOP! Cut the wheels all the way to the left
to straighten things out.
This is where it gets very difficult to
explain... timing and corrections. Each
trucks turning radius is slightly different
which means they straighten out quicker
or slower than the other.
At this point, your trailer tires should be in
1/4
line with the opening of the spot. Now you
need to pay attention to your tail swing.
*this is where experience and practice
come into play to be able to anticipate
what's going to happen and how/when to
correct it.*
Problem scenario 1 and how to fix it: if you
notice the nearest corner of the trailer is
turning too much and is going to cross over
the boundary line (ie hit the truck in the
spot next to you), STOP! Turn your wheels
all the way to the right then slowly move
forward about 6' then STOP. Turn your
wheels all the way to the left then slowly
back up again. What this does is reduce the
jack knife angle. If done correctly, you
should only have to do this once, twice
max!
Problem scenario 2: you notice your trailer
2/4
isn't turning enough and will cross over the
far boundary (ie hit the truck in spot on the
other side of the trailer), STOP! With the
wheels still turned all the way to the left,
pull forward 4'-6', STOP, turn your wheels
all the way to the right then back up 1' NO
FURTHER! Turn your wheels all the way to
left and slowly back up. What this does is
increase the jack knife angle to get the
trailer to turn quicker.
Using the above information, you should be
able to compete the maneuver. VERIFY
with the person giving you the cdl test but
I believe you get 3 goals and 3 or more pull
ups (depending if you used any on your
previous maneuvers)
You only have 70' from the opening of the
spot which may not sound like a lot but it's
plenty.
I hope this is clear enough for you to
understand
Thank you thank you I am going to practice 😊
I will get on the test 90 off set right or left side or parallel right or left side and straight back
My instructor told me to look at the numbers on the bulkhead instead of tail of the trailer and he never told me how long I need to wait and how much to turn when manuvering.

This is the only backing that I have done so far, but this was huge help! Not a fan of double clutching yet, but I will get there! Thanks for helping us new drivers!
M B you’re welcome! I’m glad it went well. Keep up the good work
Doing the same on my lunch lol
@@lil_wooddale44 Good luck to you!
Currently in cdl school and I’m struggling with my straight back ! This video gives me some sense of assurance. Thank you
The BEST explanation, MARVELOUSE!!!!!!!
I appreciate your work THANKS A LOT.
You’re welcome!
You need to do more tutorials man, you are so clear and understandable, great views with the headcam
Preciate it
please do alley dock
The alley dock is very difficult to explain
via text but I'll try.
Start with your tandems at the 43' mark
and your trailer bumper 10' out and 10'
away from the closest corner of the spot
you want to put it in. Before moving at all,
turn your wheels all the way to the right.
Roll back slowly holding the wheels there.
Watch the trailer tires. The second they go
from rolling backwards to sliding only,
STOP! Cut the wheels all the way to the left
to straighten things out.
This is where it gets very difficult to
explain... timing and corrections. Each
trucks turning radius is slightly different
which means they straighten out quicker
or slower than the other.
At this point, your trailer tires should be in
1/4
line with the opening of the spot. Now you
need to pay attention to your tail swing.
*this is where experience and practice
come into play to be able to anticipate
what's going to happen and how/when to
correct it.*
Problem scenario 1 and how to fix it: if you
notice the nearest corner of the trailer is
turning too much and is going to cross over
the boundary line (ie hit the truck in the
spot next to you), STOP! Turn your wheels
all the way to the right then slowly move
forward about 6' then STOP. Turn your
wheels all the way to the left then slowly
back up again. What this does is reduce the
jack knife angle. If done correctly, you
should only have to do this once, twice
max!
Problem scenario 2: you notice your trailer
2/4
isn't turning enough and will cross over the
far boundary (ie hit the truck in spot on the
other side of the trailer), STOP! With the
wheels still turned all the way to the left,
pull forward 4'-6', STOP, turn your wheels
all the way to the right then back up 1' NO
FURTHER! Turn your wheels all the way to
left and slowly back up. What this does is
increase the jack knife angle to get the
trailer to turn quicker.
Using the above information, you should be
able to compete the maneuver. VERIFY
with the person giving you the cdl test but
I believe you get 3 goals and 3 or more pull
ups (depending if you used any on your
previous maneuvers)
You only have 70' from the opening of the
spot which may not sound like a lot but it's
plenty.
I hope this is clear enough for you to
understand
Best video teaching straight back up by far!!! earned my sub
Thank you!
It’s my 3rd day in school and I’m having a hard time backing up, I’m so excited to try your tactics. I’m sure it will help me a lot. Thank you 🙏🏼
I am learning back up this week, and am really struggling. Tomorrow when I go I am gonna practice this lesson. You made my concept very clear thanks. God bless you my brother.
This is the best demo I’ve seen yet; simple, and very effective! Thanks Sir!
Sheldon McDowell you’re welcome! 😎😊👍🏼
You explained it better than my big mouth instructor from school I just watched this video and I understand it clearly now thanks
We thank you for the heads up Rush. These Jewels are Priceless!
This is platinum, right here. This is the best backing up I ever seen. Thanks again!
You’re welcome! Glad it helped
Good job Scott. Glad to see you are helping so many people.
Thanks, bud! Hope you and the fam are doing well
This is my biggest problem, thank you for that approach...👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great vid, well explained in 10 min, school teaches in 4 days.
Thank you
Thanks!! I'm in CDL school now and I'm about to try this technique. Seems like it will be perfect to use.
Thank you so much!
oh wow!! I'm glad it helped you! :-)
Thank you so much. I was in school today doing my straight line backing and did terrible. I actually wanted to give up but after watching this video, I’m going to give it another shot.
How's it going? :)
I am in cdl training schools right now watching your video open my eyes
Thank you
Today was my first day at the yard and backing was giving me the most problems. We're also parallel parking and alley docking but I just did str8 backing ten times and was def oversteering and making things worse so tomorrow I am definitely going to try this!
Just started school myself and I was really struggling as well I’m looking forward for school tomorrow!
@@mariomonzon7473 yesterday was my first day and I’m not doing good I hope it will get better! Good luck
@@sanric4076 it’ll definitely get better just takes practice! I’m doing a lot better on my straight back, I’m on lane change and it’s going good ! Next will be the alley dock I can’t wait !
@@mariomonzon7473 I’m doing much better too omg I’m going on the road tomorrow I never drove manual before lord help me
@@sanric4076 you’ll be fine you just gotta remember to not let that clutch go and always give it gas !
You actually break down the steps I love this video 👍🏾
Why do these CDL schools tell us not to be watching UA-cam videos on backing a semi truck. Watching this video I think is going to help me. At the school, no instructor has time for you. I failed my test two times already, but I told myself I’m not giving up.
I like your backing training easy and simple to understand thank you so much
Love this Vid. Would be cool if you can eventually do one for how do an alley dock and 90. They way you explained made it easy for us to comprehend.
The same day I recorded this, I was thinking of how best to do it. I could've gotten it done but it started raining 😔
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us beginning truck driving school. I’ve been in training and know trainer has given me as much details as this video you have made. Thanks so much for making the straight backing maneuver more easy and understanding to us beginners.
Another great video! Definitely keep them coming. You do a great job explaining things in your descriptions, teaching and use or the video. Always learn something new from your videos whether it be $ wise or procedure or misc stuff.
I appreciate that! Thanks for the continued support!
Awesome tutorial. Thank you very much. I spent the whole week trying to understand the concept but couldn't. Thanks to your video, now I have a clearer idea.
Really good video Scott, very helpful, you would make a great trainer, be safe out there
Thank you!
Thank you so much! I have really been beating myself up over the straight back. You helped me and I am appreciative!
This guys backing lesson is PERFECT! Disregard all other videos and watch this one and I guarantee you'll master backing and pass your test! I just passed because of this video, THANK YOU!!!
Thanks, Jason! Congrats on passing
This is a massive help. I've been struggling the last two days. Thank you.
@@DuragAllDay you’re welcome
I’m currently In a school and I have a hard time backing up in a straight line
Stormtrooper 24 you’re definitely not alone, just read through the comments. Give these thoughts in the video a try and see how they work for you. Come back and lemme know how it goes!
@@RushinTruckin
I swear to God me too just today I was struggling 😭
And my instructor was yelling at me
God bless you… I’ve been oversteering & overthinking for a week now.. tomorrow I’m gonna use your method
Looking like you would make a good trainer. What ya tink ? 👍
Possibly. We'll see what the future holds 😎
Thanks for this video! I'm in class now and you just made this so much more easier!!
I really appreciate this, first day backing and did exactly what you said at the end, excellently explained!
Ty!!💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Thanks man, you explain it a lot better than other videos. Simple explanations regarding the steering
Thank you. I was really having trouble and I was embarrassed but you simplified for me!
Saved this video! I start CDL school in 3 weeks and this looks easy with some practice! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this. I was struggling so much, this made it easy
Thank you!
You're welcome. I hope it helps
Thank you. Had a bit of a struggle on my first attempts yesterday but this helped a lot.
My gosh, I have the dreaded snake issue in the straight back. You are god-sent. Thanks 🙏
I just started straight line backing at truck school and your method and words made sense to me. I'm going to try that tomorrow. Thank u ❤️
You’re welcome. Lemme know how it goes
Excellent information! In fact, I agree that you explained the maneuvers clearly and concisely, better than the school that I am attending! Thank you! 🙏
EMaris.
Thank you so much man. I just started truck driving school and I am struggling with straight back. This really helped. Please keep posting more content
This is the only video a new person who wants to be a truck driver needs. It's good for parallels offsets straight backs and more if there is more. I thank you for this video. 👍🏻
Thanks bro watching your video has boosted my confidence when it comes to straight backing it now
I like your simple and precise practical approach. I'm a beginner feeling very frustrated in making bucking attempts. Indeed, watching your clip, I feel motivated. Thanks for sharing 👍
it clearly makes sense now. lightbulb went off and you are awesome. Thanks!
Great! You’re welcome
Thank you! Everything clicked after I watched this. You kept it pretty simple and my dyslexic brain appreciates that! 👏 Good job sir!
This video was amazing. I did my first straight line backing today and I was having trouble with correction. Steer towards the drifting side. Brilliant! Thank you.
Am
In CDL school and am having the same problem and this video had open my eyes thanks for the help
Just had to do this today at trucking school. Didn’t do very well but first day on the yard. This video really put it in a different perspective.
I am in CDL school right now and totally failed the straight back. This method will help me so much! So glad I came across the video! Thanks for the help! ❤🎉
You’re welcome! Best of luck
Thank you! This should help a lot. I'm training to be a switcher at Fedex and the guys they have training me aren't able to explain to me how to correct the issue. You've explained it perfectly and demonstrated it very well. All I need to do now is practice it.
Thanks I have backing tomorrow I am so glad I was led to your video. I am sure that it will help
Thank you heaps, I was messing it up before lunch break. I watched this video during my break and low behold it was perfect advice. Thank you for taking the time to teach us newbies.
Love it! You’re welcome
Something so simple helps. This was very good.
The way you explained it was a huge help! Thank you
Man I’m in class now sitting in the car with the Aircondintion on and couldn’t figure this out hopefully this works and I’m already subscribed all the instructors never explained that or I missed that 10 min makes so much sense! Hopefully this works and solves everything me and a few guys need this!
Man, thank you so much. You explain so easily and clear.. I’m in middle of getting my CDL, used your idea and got it. Straight back..
Best instructor EVER🙏🙏🙏
Thank you
