You will get it. Do it over and over again. When your trailer drifts off the wrong way, ask yourself - what did I do wrong? What will I do the next time? Look at the trailer sides - make it more left and right. Make the movement stop - If the trailer drift to the left, to stop it, give it some left.
This is everything you need to do and learn about straight line backing. I learned so much watching the video, specially your advice about mastering the truck and every backing maneuver by practicing the straight line backing.
I just watched this video because I'm having trouble with straight line backing. It is my second day I offset Park both sides, but I can't backup. After seeing how you had your mirrors adjusted, I think that's probably part of my problem. I couldn't see the right side of the trailer properly. I think if I go slowly and try again, I'll be fine. Thank you for the video
It's now been 2 months and I have been driving for my company for a month. I got over all of my problems at the beginning and it really was how I had my mirrors adjusted. I can Blind Side and driver side back into most places now. This video was a lot of help
Are you at NATS in Woodlawn? Someone there does not want me there. My you tube channel may be one of the reasons why. When I ran a range, had a 99 % passing rate.
Keep working at it. If you loss your left tire in your left mirror, the trailer is going to the Right. Turn the steering wheel to the right, and your left tire will be back.
@@manueltrasancosvalle9632 Hi Manuel, Riding stright up the left line is a good way to learn how to Stright Line Back. If you can keep the left rear trailer tire on the left line, all the way back - You should be able to do all of your skills. Steve
Thanks for all the videos Trucker Steve going to be going to trucking School here In a month or 2 I live in Laurel so I'm thinking of North American or CDL Book Club I'm leaning more towards North American because of your videos I appreciate all your videos and your knowledge
I no longer instruct at North American, but they have a school in Carroll County with no more then 12 Students. Jeff Mills, CDL Book Club my be a good choice. If I’am training, I want to train on a 48 to 53 foot trailer. Also drive a sleeper tractor. Your test will be in a day can. At North American, I’am one of the MVA tester.
@Trucker Steve , CDL Instructor Got you thanks for the info 👍🏼 I really appreciate the response. I'll definitely check into all of that, that you explained again appreciate the response and the videos
You keep backing until it CLICKS. When you make a mistake, WHY? What did I do wrong? Do it again and again- be really good at it. The trailer only goes where you let it go. Please refer my channel to your classmates. Steve
Thank you for your video, so no more than a quarter turn, maybe just a little, I've been oversteering and it's been killing me, so the quarter turn is the key, not too many videos show the hand at 12oclok then quarter turns to 9 or 3, thank you very much.
@@kokoedoho6265 that’s is called Motor Skills. When you park your car or pick up, you don’t even think about it much. Your brain - hands and eyes react and you will park your vehicle. With practice, you will learn to react to your trailer. When it’s starting to drift to the left you will stop ✋ it by giving the steering wheel some left to stop the drift. Mirrors must be properly adjusted for you. Relax and enjoy the journey and learn to be in control of your trailer. You are the Boss of your trailer. It will only go where you want it to GO !
hi thank you very much for your video, excuse me I haven't been able to do it for several weeks. Every time I can't straighten my truck when I'm in straight back. either I'm turning in the wrong direction or I don't understand the concept. Help me, plus it’s been over a month, I can’t do it
Number ONE Rule, be POSITIVE! You can do this. If the Trailer is drifting to the right, turn the steering wheel just enough to make the trailer to go to the left. You are looking in your left mirror- you can see the Trailer starting to get straight again. You need to learn to stop 🛑 this movement be giving the steering wheel a little left then getting the steering tires straight. That is the trailer is center in the left and right mirrors. Read all comments for backing a trailer. For all videos- may be of a help to you Sounds like you are over steering. Yes you must turn the steering wheel and learn to react to the trailer movement but don’t over steer.
My small adjustments turn into big. That’s where I’m messing up. I don’t see the trailer moving as fast then I start back going straight cause I think my fronts wheel about to hit a cone. This industry not for quitters and I didn’t start school to quit. Being the only female in school also is a lot of pressure because I’m overthinking and telling myself this is a mans world and job and belittle myself. It’s me vs the trailer and my mind everyday 😭 only on day one. Instructors say I’m doing good but I don’t see it because I stop and get out to much which is a habit I don’t want to build because the test is limited on getting out.
Keep doing it over and over again. You will soon learn to react to the trailer. The trailer is going to your RIGHT. REACT - turn to the right to stop it or to bring it back to the left. As the trailer is coming to the left, you should be looking at your LEFT MIRROR. You will see the left side of the trailer moving to the left. When the trailer is where you want it, STOP THE MOVEMENT by steering to the LEFT the center out the steering to get the trailer straight. Practice moving the trailer left and right. Practice stopping the trailer movement. Soon you will be the MASTER OF YOUR TRAILER. Its only goes where you let it go.
Hey girl ! How did it go ? I’m in school now and I’m having the same issues you are. Please tell me you got your license ! I’m embarrassed that I can’t get it after a week :/. Lmao.
heyy trucker steve,I'm good doing my maneuvers, but my biggest problem is keeping the truck center or straight when pulling all the way down before i do my straight, anyone has any techniques or suggestions to help me out.
You may be looking down or aiming down as you are going down the lane. Also, you may be over checking your mirrors. AIM HIGH - Look down the lane - May be a reference object at the end of your lane. Aim High in driving, keep the tractor trailer center in the lane or highway. When you drive your car, you are not looking down but far down the road which keeps you in your lane. If you looking to the left or right too much, you will driff off your lane. Hope this is some help to you. Elijah
Trailer is drifting to the right ( steer to the problem) as you steer to the right, looking at your left mirror- you will see the trailer coming back to the left. To stop the left movement, steering a little to the left will stop it the center to 12 position. Practice moving the trailer to the left and right and stopping the movement over and over again. You will get it. Also learn to look at the correct mirror.
Should have video the right mirror. Okay Backing the trailer is centered in the left mirror. You will see the trailer drifts to the left. No longer straight- that means in the right mirror, the right trailer tires has disappeared. To get the right tires back , I need to steer left more the trailer back to the right and the trailer centered in the mirrors. Center in the left mirror. Do you understand what I’m writing to you? Backing up, I am keeping the left side of the trailer parallel To the line on the left side.
1. Pull up forward until the tractor and trailer is straight. Stop 2. Adjust your left and right mirrors Make sure you can see the sides of the trailer and the the trailer tires. Left and right sides. 3. Before you start, you should also see 10 feet of space or more On each side. Pull up half the distance and stop. Use the video on my channel 4. Once you get it back several times, pull up more . Expand the distance. Small turns on - don’t over steer - seeing the tires is okay, but even more important is the sides of the trailer. Check out all alley dock videos on my playlist ( click onto the playlist) and videos on my channel. Are you on a dirt lot? You need no less than one hour per day practicing. By week 3 on the range, you should have it Hopefully your class is the proper number of students so you can get your time in.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor yes it’s a gravel yard and we just do 5 at a time we actually moved to offset today and I’m stuck on it because I don’t get the straight line backing
@@concettawilliams6609 Make sure your driver seat is properly adjusted. Try to relax in the seat - left mirror is the primary mirror. Turn the steering wheel and learn to control the movement of the trailer. Yes, just like a game! Your job is to be in control of the moment of the trailer When another student is backing up, get in front of the tractor trailer and as the trailer drifts to the right you should be saying- turn the wheel to the right Drifts to the left- say turn the steering wheel to the left. Note. Many new students keep looking at the wrong mirror when backing up. What state is yours CDL School?
I just need a yard and a truck for a Day I can learn all this with no issues going to school and getting to drive only a hour a day I was just warming up now you tell me to come back tmr 😬
i’m having issues with my set up i always end up to close to the right or my trailer ends up crooked but i’m constantly checking each mirror pls help it’s messing with my skills as welll
This video is for straight line backing. Not sure of what range skill test you are having problems with. If you’re trailer is going to much to the right after a set up, you’re set up is more than 45 degrees. View all videos on how to fix a poor setup. Some are on the SHORT Videos - some on the long videos. Let me know what is the skill. Reverse offset- standard testing- offset ect.
Are you still reversing while turning to the 3 and 9 o clock position or are you on the brakes at that time and start back reversing as you straighten the steering wheel back to 12oclock?
Still moving back , never stoped. I’am always reacting to the trailer. If I’am straight and center in the lame, and I can see my left and right trailers tires I will do this. Straight line back - the right trailer tire disappears- I will thrn the steering wheel to the left ( 9 o’clock ) and the the tire will come back. ( back to 12). Same with the left tire. But turn the wheel to the right ( three 0’clock. Hope this help you. Easy to turn the wheel if the tractor trailer is moving learn to read the tailer. If it starts moving to the left, the trailer is taking to YOU. It saying, please turn the wheel to the left - move the trailer to the right. Check your right mirror. What the right trailer tire is back in view - wheel back to center.
After 5 hours of practice, you should have your straight line backing fairly good. I always say 1 yards but it’s about 2 feet off each side. Make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted. The left mirror is very important - you must see the left trailer wall and left trailer tires. Once you can learn to move the trailer wall right and left, you getting there. Learning to control the movement of the trailer. Takes practice.
Thank you for the video and the info currently in CDL school just started straight line backing tonight don't think I did horrible for my first time ever but I got a ways to go before I feel comfortable
Best to you Logan. You will learn to react to your trailer. Make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted. If the trailer is drifting off a little to the right, react and steer to 3 and the trailer will come back to the left. A small turn to 10 will stop the movement. Have fun with this. Move the trailer and see if you can control it.
FMCSA says, when a CDL school sets you up for your CDL test- you are proficient in all skills. You can back up your car because you’re motor Skills ( brain ) knows what to do. Backing up a trailer is learning a new skill. Motor skills will kick in with practice. Read all comments for more information. You can do this!
Sir, please it seems to me you are using one hand on 12 O'clock. How about using two hands on 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and then 12 and 6 o'clock? Is that possible. Thank you.
Yes it is. On the first day on the range, many students are over steering. I have them drive down center in the lane about 100 feet. If they are right handed, they put their hand on the steering wheel at 12 O’clock. I’am teaching small turns and using the proper mirrors to straight line back. Most importantly to see the movement of the trailer and how to make it go right or left. Also how to stop this movement. Once they understand this, they have it. If I have 10 students, 8 of them will be straight line backing by the end of day 2. It just a training session. When they practice most have two hands on the wheel if needed.
After the third week, you should have been good ( okay not very good but good during week 4) When you are backing up - straight line, is anyone telling you where to turn the steering wheel? A little help is okay but you need to back it up on your own. If you make a mistake, ask yourself why. Do it again and learn to react to your trailer.
I’m a little confuse so when you lose your left tire can you turn to the right when you lose your right tire turn the left ? would that be running toward the problem
Okay, do this. Pull up center in the lane. Your tractor and trailer is center and straight. Your mirrors are properly adjusted. Your right and left side of the trailer is center in each mirror. Also you can see your left and right trailer tires. Okay, back up straight for a short distance. Turn the steering wheel a little to the left. As soon as the left tire disappears, STOP. Now check your left mirror. The left side of your trailer is no longer parallel to the left line and you can not see the left trailer tire. Now check the right mirror, your trailer is not straight and going to the right side of the lane. There your PROBLEM. Let’s fix it, steer to the right (about 3 o’clock. ). As you back up look at your left mirror. As soon as the trailer and tire comes into view, just turn the steering wheel a little to the left to stop the movement to the left Then center the steering wheel to keep the trailer straight. Keep working on learning to control your trailer. Many students keep looking at the wrong mirror or they oversteer. You will good if you keep working at it. What school are you attending? Best to you , Steve

I was very disappointed. Today was my first day doing straight back and I couldn’t make it myself until instructor corrected me and I did it. But the problem of my school is too many people waiting in the line so you can do only 1 back in an hour.
That is a BIG problem with CDL Schools. Keep good records of your time doing range and road skills. If you had only 20 minutes, don’t record 1 hr. If you spent 20 minutes driving, don’t put down 1 hour. Use your cell phone to video the range.
I currently attend North American trade schools and I see that’s where this took place today and yesterday we’re doing a straight line backing. I’m optimistic that I will get this down. I just had trouble with the small adjustments to keep my tractor and trailer and the alotted space.

Im learning at this exact school right now for the class A that offset taking me a while to learn man i wish you where still here
Are you at NATS in Woodlawn? Someone there does not want me there. My you tube channel may be one of the reasons why. When I ran a range, had a 99 % passing rate.
Thank you so much for this video, I am struggling with the Straight Back.
Good stuff I always end up with my trailer in my right mirror over and over again . Still learning hopefully I get it soon I’m on my 4th day of school
Keep working at it. If you loss your left tire in your left mirror, the trailer is going to the Right. Turn the steering wheel to the right, and your left tire will be back.

Thank you for your video, so no more than a quarter turn, maybe just a little, I've been oversteering and it's been killing me, so the quarter turn is the key, not too many videos show the hand at 12oclok then quarter turns to 9 or 3, thank you very much.

Wow that’s awesome!!
hi thank you very much for your video, excuse me I haven't been able to do it for several weeks.
For all videos- may be of a help to you
Sounds like you are over steering. Yes you must turn the steering wheel and learn to react to the trailer movement but don’t over steer.
Thanks for your lessons
Thanks you!!
I'll try it!!
You are the BEST ..
Thanks You.
Thank you
Simple nice
Thank you.
Lmao.
thank you appreciate your help
Why did you not put a cone in front center as a reference point for going forward ?
The cones on the right is for the offset skill and the cones on the left is for the parallel park.
Many states, no longer have these skills.
Three lanes for those skills and only one lane for the the new range set- up.
Thank you!
heyy trucker steve,I'm good doing my maneuvers, but my biggest problem is keeping the truck center or straight when pulling all the way down before i do my straight, anyone has any techniques or suggestions to help me out.
Elijah
@Trucker Steve , CDL Instructor Thank you Steve, will definitely take this advice
Thank you this was so helpfull
Thank you man.
Hi so im lost if my trailor is going towards the right side do i move my steering wheel to the left 9 Or turn it to the direction its going right 3?
Trailer is drifting to the right ( steer to the problem) as you steer to the right, looking at your left mirror- you will see the trailer coming back to the left. To stop the left movement, steering a little to the left will stop it the center to 12 position. Practice moving the trailer to the left and right and stopping the movement over and over again. You will get it. Also learn to look at the correct mirror.
Good video
Thanks thanks I need all the help I can get💯
Glad to be of help to you.
👍👍👍
You said “ I lost the right tire” i’m trying understand what you mean if you are in the left mirror
Should have video the right mirror. Okay
Backing the trailer is centered in the left mirror. You will see the trailer drifts to the left. No longer straight- that means in the right mirror, the right trailer tires has
disappeared. To get the right tires back , I need to steer left more the trailer back to the right and the trailer centered in the mirrors. Center in the left mirror. Do you understand what I’m writing to you? Backing up, I am keeping the left side of the trailer parallel
To the line on the left side.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor Yes thank you, i’m going try this out tomorrow!
I am struggling with straight line backing I don’t get the concept of straight line backing I can’t see the wheels at all
1. Pull up forward until the tractor and trailer is straight. Stop
2. Adjust your left and right mirrors
Make sure you can see the sides of the trailer and the the trailer tires. Left and right sides.
3. Before you start, you should also see 10 feet of space or more
On each side. Pull up half the distance and stop. Use the video on my channel
By week 3 on the range, you should have it
Hopefully your class is the proper number of students so you can get your time in.

Your job is to be in control of the moment of the trailer
When another student is backing up, get in front of the tractor trailer and as the trailer drifts to the right you should be saying- turn the wheel to the right Drifts to the left- say turn the steering wheel to the left.
Note. Many new students keep looking at the wrong mirror when backing up.

Is this back maneuver the same for all size trailers
Yes. Smaller trailers move faster then 40 plus size trailers. For all trailers.
i’m having issues with my set up i always end up to close to the right or my trailer ends up crooked but i’m constantly checking each mirror pls help it’s messing with my skills as welll

You can back up your car because you’re motor Skills ( brain ) knows what to do. Backing up a trailer is learning a new skill. Motor skills will kick in with practice. Read all comments for more information. You can do this!
Shit I need it did my straight back today it was not good
Sir, please it seems to me you are using one hand on 12 O'clock.
Thank you ❤️
Thank you! Always keep learning to be the master of your Trailer. It only goes where you let it go.
Hey, I passed my parking exam 8/17 🎉 thanks again
GREAT! CDL DRIVER.
I go before the examination on the 16 and my straight line backing is still horrible after 3weeks
After the third week, you should have been good ( okay not very good but good during week 4)
When you are backing up - straight line, is anyone telling you where to turn the steering wheel? A little help is okay but you need to back it up on your own. If you make a mistake, ask yourself why. Do it again and learn to react to your trailer.
Great presentation
I’m so bad at straight line backing somebody asked me if I was trying to do off track backing 😂😂😂😂😂
Perfect❤
STOP. Take a deep breath-

The first week students need to learn how to straight line back.
After two weeks on the range, you should see improvement. You are just getting started. Relax and get into the tractor and work on your skills. You will be okay. You can do this.
PLEASE adjust ur mirrors until you can just barely see the tires. I fucking sucked at backing for the the first two days and am getting better finally bc I learned to adjust my damn mirrors🤦🏻♂️
So many times, I get in the tractor to help a student only to find the mirrors are not adjusted correctly.
