Nice HO! Side note, near a year ago, the actual full scale Big boy 4014 came cruising by my house on tracks located just 150 feet from my front porch! Rolling thunder! Shook the ground as it passed! Quite magnificent to behold!
Most fortunate. I've seen many videos of the real 4014 running and try to place myself near it's wake. Videos just don't convey the magnitude of experience. Thanks for sharing!👍
@hikerdude5265 by all mean do! The in person experience is wonderful!
Great review! Glad to hear that the move went well. Love the new set up!
Thanks for this review, a comparison between all the current Big Boys in the market would be awesome !
Thanks the review, looks like a remarkable train. The video quality is superior, once again great review.
When James said the big boy came in a trix box I actually thought it was a trix cereal box😂😂
Great new studio, MTH and Broadway Limited Big Boy's have a lot more features for half the price. I always appreciate your reviews, a great guide before I decide to buy or not.
Although thats true, with trix you allso pay for the brand and for the fact that they hand make these in Germany.
MTH has downsized no longer ran by Mike Wolf and sold off its HO division to ScaleTrains so you will have to wait until then so in the mean time any issues you are out of luck and MTH has had plenty of issues with HO (Bought two, sent both back, even tried to buy another today and the dealer was nice enough to test it and it was a dud saving me more of a hassle). Broadway Limited quality has gone down the tubes with Paragon 3 (three pole motors and a crappy decoder to boot, really?) and 4 isn't turning out to be much better (Own several Paragon 1's and 2's that are much better than their current crop). At least with a Trix/Markiln locomotive I don't have to worry about quality control being a concern.
When you buy a Marklin you end up with a Marklin made in its home country with great engineers unlike the other cheaper alternatives. It’s truly the Mercedes of trains.
Great informative video!!!..Thank you James!
THAT IS A GREAT LOOKING ENGINE. I HAVE A BIG BOY HO FROM THE LATE 60'S AND DOSEN'T LOOK AS GOOD AS THIS ONE. TKS FOR THE SHOWING.
Good review - hope you get settled in the way you want.
Great review James, you’ve set a standard I’m sure you’ll maintain. I’m really happy with my MTH Big Boy though. For about half the price, I got 4 passenger cars, smoke and wake your neighbors sound.
Was just going to say. $1000.00!!! I’ll stick with my MTH as well. This sure is a nice make though. Amazing review. Now just have to win the lottery.
fantastic review of the BIG BOY. For me the TRIX BIG BOY is the best on the market. I got two of them the 4013 and the 4015. Maybe a 4014 will follow. Take care. See ya next time.
What controller do you use to run your engines?
It's really important to see the smoke generation to determine if Marklin/Trix have addressed the synchronized chuffing, They seem to have made a lot of cosmetic changes this time around, but nothing mentioned about any smoke improvements. I consider MTH the bar for other manufacturers to beat since their synchronization is the best IMHO. Smoke billowing from a smoke generator in an unrealistic steady stream is what has prevented me from buying this beautiful Big Boy up until now. It looks like, as of this comment, you have the only review on the 2020 big-boy. Smoke demo would be greatly appreciated, make it a full review, even if you have to "drop in" a couple of smoke generators.
Just a little comment from a german: ABV = Anfahr- und Bremsverzögerung
You did mix the letters up a little bit at 09:22
Funny to pronounce for all non german speakers
Exhaust ports? She sure does look beautiful. Does the front of the smoke box smoke? It was on it's first run to Ogden back in May 2019.
Dropped at 9:10. While I really want the Trix Big Boy and all the quality and functional accuracy that implies, I am scratching my head as to why, at a grand, this does not come with smoke generators installed at a time where most of the Big Boy manufacturers include them. And I don't mean the smoke generators that ooz out like other Marklin/Trix locomotives and most notably on an otherwise perfect BLI example, but with synchronized chuffing that the soon to be defunct MTH has on their Big Boy. Despite the crappy smoke generators, BLI is still the best (I have BLI and MTH), but a Trix with MTH's chuffing smoke would blow it away. No smoke generators (even the oozing ones), no sale.
Thank you James, you saved me from pushing the buy button. I was supper excited when I saw it on the Trainworld Virtual Train Show a few days ago, but with your honest review, I've got to pass on this one. Really appreciate you review approach of showing us enough to make up our own minds on the models. Oh, and welcome to the military retiree community and best wishes on your future pursuits.
what was wrong with it? i was too lazy to watch the entire review tbh
@@ecpcharles Best to watch the review and form your own opinion. I have an early release of the Athearn Genesis #4014, so this would have been a possible replacement for what I currently have. The replacement I am looking for has features that surpass what I have and this model does not have enough of them to warrant my purchase. It is a beautiful model but I'm not looking for a display engine. Simply, feature to cost ratio did not live up to or meet my expectations.
@@carlsktx ah, i understand. I had an athearn big boy for a little while(was trying to buy and flip it, I dont model UP and have no use for onr) and the athearn ones look good enough tbh. just get the chalk writing decal and youll be all set.
@@carlsktx lmao unless ur like some ppl and want to own one of every bigboy built irl!!
@@ecpcharles My Athearn 4014 is a runner that I use to pull the fleet of heritage cars that I have acquired and built. I also have an Athearn Genesis #844 from the last run which I had to repaint, plus a BLI Challenger #3985.
Really digging the new studio James👍! As for the Trix Big Boy, it's a nice looking engine but the sounds seem to be off a bit, in fact it really doesn't sound like an articulated locomotive at all! It sounds more like a 4-8-4 more than anything! Great review though!
Great engine in every way. Must be very expensive but Trix is one of the best out there. Smoke is a must with me. Too boring without smoke and sound. Super realistic.
Good video James! The model shell is absolutely beautiful, love the cab interior floor is very good. For sounds, not so good in general. In my opionion the recent MTH HO bigboy has much better sounds, the loco has a big presence. I think the MTH wistle is spot on, big and powerful. The Trix one is pretty standard, thin and too clean and no depth. The MTH bigboy and the real bigboy wistles are raoucus and powerful. The absence of smoke is for me a minus.
He could reprogram or swap out the decoder to have better sound perhaps?
@@gilbertporter4992 you could I'm sure but for 999.99 MSRP you shouldn't have too....
MTH is closing next year unless a buyer is found.
Trix is Märklin...known for crappy sound! I have a beefed up Rivarossi 4004 with ESU Loksound 5...really great I think!
It looks great but there using an old big boy file from Ecu in 2005 that sound was bad then
Nice review James. I love your little studio looks so comfortable. The sound are not really realistic but again this model came from a German manufacturer so their sound decoder must be very different.
Have you heard that Athearn is bring the P42 to the Genesis line! I am so hyped for it after I get some questions answered I will likely pre-order one.
In Germany its already a meme that märklin the number one has the steamlokomotives with the badest Sound 🤣🤣🤣 but for me as a German Märklin is culture so who matters about the sound
Mr Creator XY, ya some people don’t really care about the sound, it’s just the details of the engine that get them.
@@vermontrail-fan5557 me XD
I expect the Germans to do better. No reason for not getting the sound sampling correct or not including smoke generators at a premium price.
I got it in 3 rail version. Very impressive model.
Have you looked at the Fleischmann/Roco Z21 DCC controller?
So you can get the smoke box for most Bachmann locomotives too that come with sound?
This may be the most accurate looking. But it’s not the most accurate sounding
That is true
I agree most of are horrible
I agree
yeah but you can reprogramm them on the Märklin/trix decoders
I have a TRIX Big Boy (4011) from 2004, and the Model sounds very different in recordings than it does when standing in front of it. I‘d bet that that effect applies to this one too, I can’t really imagine TRIX shipping it like this. And in case the new model does indeed sound like this, there‘s just a standard ESU LokSound in there, it‘s not that hard to reprogram it ^^
Awsome modle but I think the brodway limited big boys are the best HO ones although expensive but the best I think is the lionel one they came out with in O scale it will have all the details as this one and a gloss paint scene and much more.
The forward/reverse thingummy in the valve gear is not set right for the selected motion.
I had hopes with the accurate detail, but the valve motion around the eccentric crank represents indirect-Walchaerts which is incorrect....
Trix are for kids. Rich kids.
Looks beautiful but wrong sounds and no classification lights for 1000 usd ! Scheize😆
Why be such a perfectionist? It sounds darn good. I like smoke and choo choo sounds the best.
@@michaelgmoore5708 because it has 4 digit price tag 😁
@@michaelgmoore5708 that sound is nothing like the real one! I have seen the real 4014 and have worked with the crew so
Thanks for the video. My 2 cents worth and my opinion. I have the 4014 Rivarossi pre excursion with a coal tender. This Trix is almost double the cost and IMHO not much difference to warrant the price. The Rivarossi came with ESU LokSOund V4. It couldn't have been more in-accurate. Terrible sound and terrible throttle response. Replaced it with a Tsunami and now it runs and sounds like the real thing.
Nice Newest Ho Scale Big Boy 4014 Locomotive.
Sounds like only four chuffs per rev? And even then like someone walking through potato chips. The whistle is off. Nowhere as husky, resonant or throaty as it ought to be. The deck plate looks tiny. Is the paint on the gray side? Not as impressed as was expecting or hoping to be. Thanks for the review.
Wait till October. BLI and Athearn comes.
Nice
Man o Man , at three pounds you would almost have to have Code 100 rail !!!! LMAO. WOW .. massive !!! Great Review !
Is there any ho scale big boy that made just like the real big boy? I mean, big boy rear bogie is fixed/rigid, right? It's a mallet type steam loco.
I've never seen ho scale big boy with fixed rear bogie.
Mine came new from the factory with broken parts and poor paint job. The speed at spped step 1 is too fast, and it goes from standstill to that speed too sudden. No gradual acceleration.
The whistle is way off and the bell is off. ..I'd be dropping in a lok sound decoder in it ...by the way is this diecast or plastic?
nice
is this a die cast metal construction?
Approximately how much would this cost with three rail? Been trying to find one but have been unable to find it.
Trix American version - T22163
Trix European version - T22014
Märklin (3-rail) version - 037997
@@jlwii2000 OK thanks man :)
If I decide to buy a UP4014 excursion model, it‘ll be this one. Why? First of all, I don‘t use the smoke option because it messes up both layout and models with a shiny, oily film that makes the models look weird and the track lose conductivity. Second, neither BLI nor MTH EVER replied when I asked for advice or spare parts. Like, they don‘t care. You bought the model, now it‘s your problem. Trix has all the available parts listed on their website, and if I break a ladder or the motor turns to dust, I can order a new one no problem at all. The performance is silky smooth, I like that. As for the sounds, I would want to listen to that in person at my dealer, since a video played back via my laptop speakers can (!) be misleading. Who knows, maybe the sound really does suck, maybe it‘s pretty good, I‘ll find that out soon.
I've only had bad luck with MTH HO and Broadway Limited quality since Paragon 3 has gone down the tubes. It is only Paragon 2 and earlier for me if I go that route. With Trix I know it works.
To everyone complaining about the sound, just drop the new UP 4014 sound file from ESU's library into it, problem solved. This is a brand new locomotive, it's going to take some run time to wear the driving wheels in properly before it will pull like it should. My Trix Big Boy from 2002 absolutely destroys my BLI and MTH Big Boys in the pulling department. BLI's sound is VHS-quality garbage, too!
This. I got a deal on an original release Trix and with the current crop of Broadway Limited quality control issues and MTH no longer around who had even worse problems I can do without synchronized smoke chuffing for an actual functional model. You get what you pay for.
The siderods position on the fireman side still upset me. By the way good model.
Why is there a x on the numberbord?
Even the numbers on the cab are smaller HOLY CRAP
Dang a Thousand Dollars what you get with that much Money A very Cool 1 Engine or few Engines with some Cars Track and the Board to put it on but one Engine wow.! It is Cool James then popped up the "Add" for the Feng Shui Buddha Bracelet Yup I could use 3 of those maybe change my Buddya mind it's all Good just kidding ya James Glad your in your New place cant wait to see your Layout and I will say the sound from that Engine is Pretty Darn Accurate.!
James I'm Dabbing into HO for my Dad I still have a 100 loving for my N scale But my Pop wanted something Bigger he Thinks HO looks more Prototypical but N scale to me is no slouch..
But I decided to get him his first Layout I got a Athearn Genesis GP 50 with Tsunami Sound 2 it's the Burlington Northern 3106 it has a Rotary Beacon and the Gyro light in the Nose do you think that is a Good start off Engine for a Small Layout I do have a Powercab and I just picked up a ProCab-r and I got a RB02 to Run it Wirelessly this Engine with all its features was Around 220:00 I'm asking Guys that have HO layouts to help understand for me to Help my Dad I know a Good share of stuff on my N Scale but with HO it's a new learning Experience.. So I wanted to ask.!
Take Care James stay safe..And Happy Model Railroading.🚂🚂🚂
I thought the sounds were great. I watched videos of the real excursion train the sounds do justice. The herald on the cab floor is amazing.
I agree as the accuracy of the details of the engine. Movement of the wheels is probably one of the best. Better than BLI. The chuff sound is not great. The bell sound is spot-on. The whistle, oh man, you think Trix could have done a better job.
This engine is magnificent!
I suggest you use a stabilized camera. When you hand hold, the camera is too shaky and it deters from the video as a whole. Keep up the good work.
Very nice. Just a bit out of my pay range.
i got big boy aswell but mine is rivarossi
I think it is awesome, true the sounds are bad, they probably should have used simulations versus real sounds that were recorded improperly. A good sound engineer could probably improve them.
I have the exact same model from the same brand.
Does it not have a bell?
10:13
I really think the programmers need to understand that at SLOW speed the chuff is not anything but a slight puff. The only decoder I know of that really provides prototypical sound is the TCS. I have a TRIX 4015 and intend to install the TCS decoder in it. As for detail, I must say the Broadway Limited is my all around favorite, but I love the TRIX. Athearn? Thumbs down!
Is Trix still made in Germany or have they moved to China?
No, their new trains are made in Hungary
Looks great, but the sounds are TERRIBLE. To each there own I guess. I'll stick with my MTH from 2010 I believe? And soon the Promontory Version from Athearn in October with sounds recorded from 4014 during Southwest Tour!
James, will you be reviewing Athearn Promontory version when it comes out in October?
yes, I will be reviewing that version as well.
Would the Trix version work on Bachmann track?
NMRA set the manufacturing standards that guarantee the compatibility of different brands and Trix is part of the NMRA. it my need 22+ curves to run its best
@@BoG9110 OK fair. But why does Marklin have three rail system? It's incompatible with most other model train brands which are not three rail.
@@thunderturbine8860 Marklin brand is 3 rails and Trix is the Marklin's 2 rails brand. They changed the branding name to avoid confusion between 2 DC/3 AC rails locomotives
@@jonathanmegevand3266 oh OK. That makes sense
@@thunderturbine8860
It's mainly because Märklin was the first manufacturer to start with H0 scale models in the 1920s, and back then, with the tin tracks, reliable operation was either three phase or clockwork. And ever since then they've stuck with it.
In general three phase doesn't look as good, but it is more reliable and long-lived, and especially on turning loops you won't have to deal with electrical separation etc.
Very nice workmanship. Well detailed. Can I borrow a grand from anyone?
To me, if the driver diameter is still undersized, then that is a big deal. Why can't Trix fix the driver size issue?
I believe that is because they should navigate Märklin/Trix radius 1 curves. That's 360mm or a tiny bit over 14 inches!
@@akroto I believe they should get their mind straight on which market segment they are going after. If they are going with starter crowd that is still using radius 1 curve, then this model is overpriced. If they are going after advanced modellers/collectors, then we certainly have a problem with major dimensional inaccuracies. It is not just Trix, but a lot of other model companies seems to have a problem trying to compromise to different segment, but end up with a product nobody is happy with.
They have solid collector markets. Some people will buy anything of it says Märklin (and to a degree Trix) on the box. They've made the most gaudy Crocodile locomotives in gold plated (2019) and solid platina with gold details and diamond and ruby lights (2001?, I believe it did cost 35000€). I doubt those models ever saw an operating session.
@@08trader They are very determined with their market: Europeans, mostly. To them, the US is just a side-market. Marklin/Trix produce mostly european (and especially german/swiss) models, and even the models of US prototypes is aimed at the european buyer. And yes, they are mostly overpriced, IMO. But they manage to keep selling their stock, and produce a whole load of new models every year.
If you want a Big Boy and live in europe, you basically have two choices that are readily available: Rivarossi, and Marklin/Trix. Personally, I'd love to be able to get an MTH or BLI Big Boy here.
Broadway Limited Imports still makes a better sounding big boy imo
If trix just sells a dc version, I would get that and just convert it. ESU has excellent big boy sounds
BLI makes a better EVERYTHING big boy👍
@@gettonmoreorless3741 I thought the decoder is the same as from ESU so you can program any other sound you like with the Locprogrammer from ESU...
@@JasperWest Is it? I have never heard that sound file.
@@gettonmoreorless3741 you can check some UA-cam video's were people build in aftermarket esu decoders on Märklin or Trix Big Boys. On these video's the sound looks the same to me... I have two Märklin Big Boys witch i want to convert with new sounddecoders because of the terrible old standard sound (see my YT channel). So I'm looking for better sound files as well...
It's a nice looking model, but I'll stick to my BLI. I must admit I'm not a big fan of Märklin/Trix locomotives. First off, they use metal gears, which is on a plus side really solid, but also super noisy. Second, the decoders used by Märklin/Trix is usually weirdly programmed and not of the best sound quality.
I bought the Trix TGV speed record model a few years ago, and I was so disappointed by it after having tested it that I just put it back in it's box and left it there.
The Modell looks great, but the germans have to work on the sound!
Quick question; new to the hobby. Do these units go in reverse?
yes
A shame the marker lights do not work…
A thousand bucks, and you still can't get the valve gear out of neutral.
Oh, good. Yet another Big Boy model. Because there aren't enough of those around already...

Whaaaaaaat...........??????
Nice, but I'm just not wowed. Don't care for the sound. It looks good, a little weathering applied would really take that sanitary look away.
It’s already obsolete, now it needs PTC added 😂
what no smoke
Regala la caja!!!!!!!
This loco is kinda a disappointment for $1,000. Yes, cosmetically it is accurate to the prototype, however, the sounds are HORRIBLY inaccurate. Why would a company put sounds of a non-articulated locomotive on a 4000 class?
Yeah I agree also there is no bell and stuff

Looks good, Sounds bad, but the Draw pull makes me speechless. Absolutely worse for such a heavy loco.
Martin Anschutz well, you can use a Loksound with a ESU Lokprogrammer to make an accurate Bigboy sound
Fan of the model, not a fan of the sounds. Needs Tsunami2, or ESU. Or better yet, TCS
To me, any HO locomotive that is well beyond $400 is overpriced to me. The reason is that prices are getting close to the "used car" area, haha.
