Tom and Jerry were fictional characters that starred in a series of early sound cartoons produced by the Van Beuren Studios. The series lasted from 1931 to 1933. When Official Films purchased the Van Beuren library in the 1950s, the characters were renamed Dick and Larry to avoid confusion with the famous cat and mouse team of the same name. Today, animation historians refer to the characters as Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry. - Розваги
This was the first Van Beuren Tom & Jerry I watched in my life. All thanks to the Toon Factory DVDs I've collected.
I never knew Tom and Jerry had voices, until I watched this cartoon. Characters back then rarely revealed their voices, they only made noises like screams, grunts, groans, and etc.

The voices here were done by the pioneering black comedy team of Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles. Some of their works can be found elsewhere on you tube, and they were said to be the direct inspiration for Amos & Andy. Lyles died a few months after this film in 1932 from tuberculosis, and Miller would later write for Amos & Andy.

I was looking at other Tom and Jerry episodes to put this show in perspective. This is the only one where they talked and it was in "Broken English ".

Isn't it wierd that Joseph Barbera who worked on Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry in the 30's later met Wiliiam Hanna, who together created an animated cat and mouse named Tom and Jerry in the 40's, to avoid confusion Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry were renamed Dick and Larry, I am dead serious.

I'm not sure if the fact that this doesn't bother me means that I'm used to/ignore racism, or that I've just been educated about history enough that I'm aware of the different social conditions in which cartoons like this were made...
On another note: those skeletons were pretty cool.

I believe this cartoon was meant to not only entertain, but poke fun at African Americans, especially at the time it was released, 1937. CMON SON. You would have NEVER seen a cartoon of some black people from Africa coming to America portraying stereotypes of white people (not that it makes it right). This cartoon was meant to entertain, but also degrade black people. Yea i know bunch people are gonna read this and say that racism is gone and to just get over it. But whatever...
