DVORAK 9th is obviously one of the best symphonies ever. My youth orchestra is playing the whole thing next month. Happy to see on this list, I play the cello

Omfg finally someone else who loves Prokofiev's 2nd symphony!!! (Personally) I think it's one of the most innovative pieces ever written. The emotions in this piece are so hard to describe in words; all I can say is that they appeal to someone with anxiety issues like me haha
I love Prokofiev's 3rd symphony as well these two are my two favourite symphonies!!! I like how this recording makes the trumpets in the last movement really stand out
Also, Dvorak's 9th before Shostakovich's 8th??? Like seriously?!!! Come on!!

Interesting choices. I would have made a point, my personal opinion, to have included Mahler's 3 and second. Both Finales are some of the most beautiful music I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Mahler 3 in particular...I envision overlooking yosemite national valley at sunset whenever I hear that ending. I urge you to listen to it while looking at pictures and seeing for yourself. But very good job, great list.

That reminds me of a music student who decided to"bait" his music teacher (a known lecturer on the greatness of J. S. Bach). He says to the teacher "you know, I don't like Bach at all, I think he is greatly over-rated." Everyone in the class waited in silence for the fur to fly. The teacher said simply "Well, I am sure Mr. Bach will be greatly saddened to hear that," meaning that Bach is an accepted fact. So it is with Mozart. It's a done deal.

    Here's my 10 cents' worth:
    10. Dvorak 7
    9. Berlioz Fantastique
    8. Brahms 3
    7. Haydn 49
    6. Beethoven 5
    5. Tchaikovsky 5
    4. Mahler 2
    3. Schubert 8
    2. Beethoven 3
    1. Mahler 9
Hard to pick, as there are so many. To me, the 3 standout symphonic composers are Mahler, Beethoven & Haydn (all in very different ways); so MANY of their symphonies could be considered. And a number of other composers aren't too far off - esp. Schubert (4, 5 & 9), Brahms (1 & 4), Shostakovich (5, 8 & 10), Sibelius (almost any of them), Dvorak (6, 8 & 9), Bruckner (7 & 8), and Tchaikovsky (4 & 6). Mozart was of course a supreme genius, but to me his symphonies are not his best works - tho nos 38 & 39 come pretty close. A couple of others which nobody seems to have considered are Franck's only symphony, Elgar no.1, Gounod no. 2, and Gorecki no. 3. I assume Berlioz's 'dramatic symphony' Romeo & Juliet doesn't count - or else it would be way up there in my top 10!

An interesting list but I would take out the Mahler 4 and replace it with the Shostakovich 7th if your going for powerful, dramatic music. Of course the Mahler 2nd and 8th are the most dramatic symphonies in the repertoire

  • @herodot2

Good list, although only 2 of you top 10 symphonies would have made my top 10. Actually my top 10 would be rather monotonous: Beethoven 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, Bruckner 7, 8, 9, Schubert 8, 9. Order to be figured out.
Tchaikovsky? Close. Schumann? Close. Brahms, Mahler, Prokofiev? No.

Well, according to the vote of top 151 conductors, Mozart 41st came 3rd in the greatest symphonies list, just below Beethoven 3rd and 9th.
    Just sayin........
(I see an intense debate on Mozart here)

In fact, Mozart excellent on the forefront of music, that is to say, the melodic plane. But the accompaniment of Mozart are often low, the counterpoint is simple, virtuosity is average, unlike JS Bach and Beethoven. Structures are often mild, it was the Viennese style of the time, the way I love this style, do not see it as discrimination. I much prefer Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach than Mozart or Hyadn for classic pure.

A done fact is a sophism. To say Mozart is the greatest because he is Mozart is an anti-intellectual argument. Mozart is one of the greatest composer of course, we are all agree. But Mozart is not the only one "kid composer", his father was behind him you know. Chopin and André Mathieu were as young as Mozart at their beginnig.

I am a Mozart aficionado, but he wouldn’t make my top 10 symphony list either. Maybe not even my top 10 symphonist list (Beethoven, Bruckner, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Mahler, Shostakovich, Brahms, Dvorak come ahead of him, and if I think long enough I may find a tenth one).
But Mozart does make my top 10 opera and top 10 sacred music lists (requiem, c major mass). And my top 10 concerto list would have more Mozart than any other composer (at least the clarinet concerto and the A major, c minor and d minor piano concertos would be on there).
Mozart was in my view best at mixing the orchestra with something else - a solo voice, a solo instrument, a chorus.

I am not aware of a Stravinsky symphony other than ‘en ut’, and this one would probably not make the top 10 list even of the most diehard Stravinsky fan.
The Symphony of Psalms is a true masterpiece, but it’s a sacred work rather than a symphony, despite the title.
Scriabin wrote symphonies, but his tone poems are more famous,

@Jeb Clar No. Bruckner was more influential, but Mahler developed symphony to unprecedented heights. For me, Mahler is better, although I love Bruckner very much. You love Bruckner, and I love Mahler, but let's go without fanaticism, please.
