  • A great moment in all histroy of music. Wotan and the other Gods give the ring to the Giants and the opera finnish there. BUT not the story, it is not finnish, Wotan is in big trouble. But actually it is a good end.

For fifty years Furtwaengler has been my favorite Wagnerian (and Beethoven) conductor. I see no need to change my opinion after this.

Furtwaengler's interpretations of Wagner have a unique and unsurpassed pathos!
Listening to them I always have the feeling that this is the real Wagner.

He was great, no argument there, but Wagner's descendants and the Bayreuth folks believed that nothing ever matched Arturo Toscanini's performances----transcendent. Unfortunately he left no full performances behind on recordings.

To all who are struck by the sheer splendour of the sound, be appraised that the Rome RAI Orchestra in 1951 was regarded as a less than second-rate outfit. Furtwaengler got the splendour of heaven opening to welcome God Himself out of a group of people who had not been good enough for better orchestras. This is a miracle.

Magnificent even through the shadows of 1951 sound no one could touch F for world he creates. Wagner’s genius shines like a beacon, the harps especially are glorious

Look up the orchestra he got it out of, and you will call it a miracle. The RAI Rome Symphony Orchestra was professional, but no better than that. Here it shone with mystical splendour.

Furtwaengler lives! Wagner is god. Singing so wonderful all around. Imagine if it had been recorded in today's technology, or even just 30 years ago, the sheer beauty of this exerpt! Regarding the carpers about the orchestra and minor instrumental glitches--to paraphrase Oscar Wilde: 'A cynic is one who knows the price of everything--and the value of nothing.'

Sound quality and recording is not up to par, but the rendering is the most correct from the orchestra point of listening, tempo and harmony.
