- Ukulele & Bass Ukuleles With A Mixer - HUGE Comparison!
A look at how different ukuleles and bass ukuleles sound going through a mixer and PA.
*SPOILER* They sound very different!
A huge comparison of 14 different instruments including passive electro acoustic ukuleles, active electro acoustic ukuleles and both active and passive bass ukuleles.
Jude joins me trying out the Ukumaniacs new PA system to see which of our ukuleles sound best ready for our upcoming gig supporting @4stringboy being hosted by @TheUkuleleProject in Maesteg, Wales.

yes please would love a video about PA,s and mixers.
Will definitely be looking into this, glad you like the idea.
Great education, thanks!
I've been on the fence for years now about buying a DI, thinking that direct into board was all I needed for bass. Now I'm going to get one.
Your channel just keeps getting better and better!
A good idea that helps is to use a Di box with built in Preamp. For an acoustic-electric you use a Para Di box.
Behringer make the
1. ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver. An. excellent copy of the Tech21 Sansamp Para DI.
2. BDI21 V-Tone Bass Driver. An excellent copy of the Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver.
Both these are worth checking out.
Thanks Ian, another advantage of a using DIs is that cable from instrument into DI by feet and then XLR to mixer along floor as XLRs don't loose as much signal as a very long instrument cable.
Thanks MusicMike, yes love my Behringer BDI21, use it often.
This was really helpful and informative. And yes. I really need to know about mixers and PAs, and I really need you to start from ground zero on that. Thanks for what you do.
Will definitely be look at all aspects of PAs Cate, glad this video helped too.
hope everyone feels way way better soon-ish
Hi Tony, yes we are all feeling much better now Thank You.
In the 90's I had a Studiomaster mixer, then around 2002 I bought a small eight channel Behringer for my daughter to put her fretless bass through. Behringer get a lot of stick but I have been impressed with their mixers. I quickly bought one of their ten channel mixers for vocal PA use, and in 2010 the Xenyx X2442USB for a small festival I run. These days I use the XR18 digital mixer which gives lots of individual monitor feeds, and I can save settings for different acts and locations.
Rather than adjusting the volume for each instrument with the slider you would be better increasing the gain until the clip light comes on before backing off a little, so that however hard you play the light stays off. Once you have set the gain stage use the slider to set the volume you need. That way you get the maximum clean signal into the channel without distortion and don't have to amplify too much at a later stage.
The passive ukes tend to be the cheaper ones, with poorer quality piezo pickups and you will never be able to make the proverbial silk purse..... That said, you should be able to improve the sound by using the three band EQ you have on the X2222 mixer to suit the uke, maybe adding a little reverb. Alternatively an external pre-amp or a seven or ten band EQ pedal could improve the sound. Behringer have a couple of inexpensive pre-amp/active DI boxes that might be the answer. Failing that, if the instrument sounds good acoustically, use a microphone to input the instrument into the mix, though that requires a degree of discipline not always found with musicians.
If you eventually get something like the XR18 you could set up eighteen channels each tailored to suit one of your instruments, save the whole lot then recall the ones you intend to use on a particular gig.
Excellent info, Thanks. Yep, I’ve been using Behringer amps in all sort of settings, venues, groups etc. for years and find they are excellent value for money and have never let me down.
Yep totally agree with setting the gains etc. this was very much a quick look to see how the different ukes were sounding. I have actually bought the Behringer ADI preamp pedal but just haven’t had a chance to test it out with the mixer too but will definitely be doing that soon. 👍
@@UkuleleWales I don't have an ADI box myself, but a number of acts used them at the festival over the years, from a sound guy point of view they gave me a good signal to work with and everyone seemed to get a decent tone from their instrument.
Thanks Rachel, very interesting and informative. If the group I am in ever gets into more performing this could be on the list.
Glad you enjoyed Loree. I will look at PAs properly in the future, great for smaller groups or for a few player / singer in a larger group.
Great advice Rachel👍
Thanks Chris, much appreciated.
Pinky surpassed all the competition, active and passive. 10! 🥇Sincerely, President of the Pinky Fan Club. 💕
As president, Pink is very glad to have passed your test! LOL Agree though always sounds fab!
I'd like to hear the passive pickups played through an external preamp compared with the active pickups, please.
Will definitely look to do this Dave, nice suggestion.
Thanks for the video on mixers. ❤ I have the same one, and haven’t used it for a while. Gonna get it out again. ❤
Thanks Trent, yes love the Behringer mixers, have used them for years - awesome value too.
Great video! Would love to see a mixer video, love all the little knobs :D
Will do Maria, PA video for the future.
Hi Rachel I tested the Mike Preamp MIC100 from Beringer instead of a normal DI-Box yesterday. Great. The tube inside makes the sound much warmer and the combination of levels for input and output brings a lot of flexibility. And on the meters you can see direct that everything is okay with your uke. And my electric bass sounds on this preamp superb.
Thanks Christian, sounds interesting, I will definitely be looking into one of these. I've got the Behringer ADI-21 V-Tone for Christmas so really looking forward to try that out as well.
A Di (Direct Injection) converts an unbalanced, high impedance, signal output of an instrument to a balanced low impedance mic-level signal.
Both these are worth checking out.
the lava sounds a bit tinny maybe you need to adjust the eq on the uke or/and the PA mixer
with Bass as a player and running sound. I much prefer to go bass -> effects ( or not) -> BDI21 to Pa and amp on stage. Use the amp on stage just as a stage monitor so the band can hear bass, turn amp slightly across stage, dont need it booming our. this is also handy incase you need to change the amp settings on stage it wont affect the PA. This gives the Sound guy more control. With this saiid some Pa systems that dont have a seperate Sub-woofer in some venues, may need a bit more bass from an onstage amp.
allot of electric basses and electric guitars are passive and work fine. again you can use a Di Box with preamp built in like the ADI21 and BDI21.
so dont forget about trying some DI Boxes with Built in EQ The ADI21 and BDI21 are only $35 usd. might pay to get some of these and try them both with active and passive instruments. you will find it will make a difference to the sound. and will improve things for your group.
Hi, yes I have the Behringer Bass V-Tone and will be getting the acostic version soon. Totally agree, great, cheap preamps / DIs and well worth investing in. I've used it in a few videos too. ua-cam.com/video/42wKY4nY3OM/v-deo.html
@@UkuleleWales It would be a good idea to do an update to this video explaining about external preamps like the V-toner series and other Para Di etc. and with some samples going through your mixer with and without for both active and passive. then others will see there is a solution especially for passive instruments.
Thanks ❤…
You're welcome 😊
Hi Rachel. Just came across this and it is so useful. Tomorrow, 2 of us are setting up with our church group in our town (deluge permitting) to do ‘Ukulele Carols with Free Hot Chocolate’ as people are en route to the Christmas ‘market’ (although that’s pushing it for Leamington!)
I’ll be using my Behringer 1002B mixer, battery powered, and it will feed into a church portable battery PA or, in an emergency, my Samson Expedition Express (brilliant bit of kit that has rescued us more than once - with internal battery).
I have 2 acoustic ukes to hook up, and 2 mics. My uke is the Clearwater Roundback Baritone (reentrant D), which is passive. The other uke is a Kala tenor, active. I have a Baggs EQ/DI and an ART active DI so all kitted out. However, I always find it stressful setting it all up and you can rely on me forgetting to switch something on and going into a flap!
This vid and the setting up the PA one just help me to remember all the stages. Thank you/diolch yn fawr! Laura
Sounds like you have a great set up there Laura and very glad to have reminded you of the set up stages. Hope your gig went well. 😊
Looks like the Kanilea has an active Mi-Si pick up in!
It does indeed! Taking a closer look at the power socket I could see MISI on it.
I run my passive ukuleles through a Radial Active Stage Bug D.I . box to an amp or pa system. Pete's ukes are passive, I have 2, one a Revelator, the other a tenor acoustic.
I've not used a actibe DI so good to know. I will dfinitely try out some pre amps in the future to see what can be done. It is shocking the difference though through a PA compared to a normal amp as well.
Fab Rachel, really useful... love The magic Fuke Tmber bsss..!!
Have you ever been at a venue and heard a Microphone squeel. This is when there is too much Gain, can happen to instruments too. so you need to set the gain so it is under the peak and wont squeel. this can also happen when turning the volume of the instrument or mic etc. so if you need more volume turn down the Gain. a Pa system will only be able to do so much with a passive pickup.
the best thing to make a passive instrument sound good. is to get a Di box with built in Preamp. For an acoustic-electric you use a Para Di box.
Behringer make the
1. ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Driver. (para Di style) An. excellent copy of the Tech21 Sansamp Para DI.
2. BDI21 V-Tone Bass Driver. An excellent copy of the Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver.
Both these are worth checking out.
Hi Paul, Thanks. No turning the gain up would just make it sound worse. If need be either an active DI box or a preamp pedal would help more. As MusicMike has said, more gain just causes the horrible feedback. Hopefully see you Monday.
Thank you for this. Really interesting and helpful. I too would like a video on PAs etc. And what all the buttons do…gain etc? Also, am I the only one that finds everything seems to work loose when the jack is also the strap button? This has happened three times with me on different ukes. And why do you get a hiss on some amps and not others, same instrument?
Hi Eillen, yes will definitely look at doing PAs. I've had a couple of loose strap button jack sockets but have either managed to tighten then or add just a drop of superglue to fix them, agree, it is annoying though.
As for hiss and amps and instruments, there can be so many factors that can cause it, I'll try and cover it in a video one day.
I Didn't watch the video closely, But the ukuleles that you don't like the sound of try twiddling with the high low and mid knobs you might be surprised.
(According to how I was taught best results will be High and low, Mids are typically not touched)
Hi, I have tried various EGs on mixers and of course the passive instruments don't have EQs built in to them. I think using a preamp pedal is or an active DI box would solve issues though.
I have no need for a mixer but this was an interesting video anyhow. 90 sec charging in that one uke, I want that battery tech in my EV!! By the way, do you have a tutorial video about how to do that muted strum you used? I tried to look at your hands but could not figure out what you were doing there.
Hi Olli, the 90 sec charging pickup is a MiSi Rechargeable Active pickup if that helps. I use a chuck / chunk strum, I've done a tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/QBL3gBA-Uwo/v-deo.html
Hello Rachel.. bumpertastic info.. Q. I know you go through the scale when you’re testing but the you play a tune I know.. but can’t remember what it is.. what is it? And how to play it.. cos it’s lovely.. thanks. Jo x
It’s Fly Me To The Moon Jo, or at least part of it. 👍
