- In this video, I compare the sound on the Vangoa laminate walnut concert ukulele with a side sound hole to get your opinion of whether or not the side sound hole is louder for the player.

The open sound port is definitely louder. Even to the point where the volume is overdriving the microphone and causing distortion. With the port covered, it doesn't distort.
I agree. It’s definitely louder with the side port!
Cool idea! Our subjective experience of the volume probably matters most. In addition, a simple decibel comparison of the two would provide objective info on the difference.
Great point! Thanks for watching and commenting!
If they are I think it's subtle - common misconception about sound holes is that it isn't actually where most of the sound comes from. The sound hole is basically a vent that allows the top to vibrate freely thereby allowing it to do its job. I've played ukes with good bracing, thin tops and small sound holes that are louder than those with ports and large sound holes. That's because the vast majority of the sound comes from the lower bout. If you cover a sound hole you are restricting the air passage more so stands to reason sound will change. But it's just because of less air transfer.
Of course - some sound DOES project from soundholes, front or side as they are open gaps - stands to reason - but they are not the main projection point.
Great points! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@stevesstrings5243 No problem - had a very long discussion with a master luthier on this topic I was recalling. Fascinating stuff. If you think about something like a violin - they can be seriously loud, but the sound holes are actually pretty tiny. In fact - really only there to allow that air transfer - but their tops under the bridge are like a drum!
This is very very interesting. Thanks so much for sharing this comment! Also very cool to see you out and around the community :)
Interesting, Thanks Steve!
You are welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Very interesting. What a gold mine of a channel as well! I'll be following you with great interest 😊
Thanks! I’m glad you found it interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice Jam & Side sounds holes def help me to do repairs inside the instruments too !
Thanks! That’s definitely an added bonus! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks Steve,
Open did seem louder,
I made a sopranino with a side hole, I will try the experiment myself.
Sounds like a plan! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@stevesstrings5243 I did it.
It makes huge difference in mine.
@@garyteters7273 I have put some in my cigar box guitar builds. I’m thinking of adding some to some other instruments too.
The sound port open seemed to be marginally louder. The closed sound port was more muted and not quite as bright sounding.
In person, to my ear, the open sound port is definitely louder for the player.
Open sounds better to me!!!!!!!)))👍🏼😊🎸
Me too! Thanks for watching!
How did your channel have such a wonderful talent that is full of strange charms unique to your videos? Well done. The video I'm watching right now is the best and the best. In the future, positive energy will surely rush towards you, so please make more good videos of you in the future. Even if I don't have to rush, watching your videos makes me feel like I'm getting more and more loved, so I'm really happy. I'm sincere with my heart as a precious relationship to you by chance. It finally stopped, and today, while the blue dawn color is reflected on the window, I accidentally sip an Americano while watching a video of an algorithm on UA-cam that guided me. To you, whom I met by chance, as a precious relationship, I give you my heartfelt praise and support. Last night, the rain seemed to stop for a while, but it finally stopped. Watching your video, I take a sip of Americano. Before I even opened my UA-cam channel, I had a good feeling of excitement at the door.
You are too kind! Thanks for watching and commenting!
From my UA-cam viewer's point of view I'd have to rate your experiment a failure. With that mic and UA-cam sound it was hard for me to tell a difference. What did your ears hear? I do like playing an inexpensive similar Irin tenor with a side sound hole when accompanying my own singing. I can definitely hear that ukulele better than I can hear other ukes that don't have a side sound hole.
To my ear, the open port was definitely louder. It overpowered the microphone.
Hardly any difference I would say.
But perhaps I should listen to it with earphones.
I suspect if I ran them through a better amp and experimented with the nobs, I could get a range of sounds out of them. I'm new to using pedals so I have a lot of learning to do. Thanks for your comment!
