Foreigners attempt strange Indonesian Drink 🇮🇩

- During a road trip from Bukit Luwang to Lake Toba with a bunch of Dutchies we stopped at a roadside cafe. I reached for what I thought was a bottle of tea, but was in fact Badak, a strange Indonesia drink. How did we react to this weird tasting beverage?
The journey, in what is called a "tourist bus" but is actually a shared taxi, cost 230,000 Rupiahs and included a ferry ticket from Parapat to Samosir, the island in the middle of Lake Toba.
I stayed in the Samosir Cottages Resort which has it's own little pier for the boat to pick you up and drop you off with maximum convenience. For one night I paid an average of 685,000 Rupiahs which is pretty high considering there are guest house rooms nearby for 100,000 but felt like having a proper hotel experience after staying in very basic accommodation in Bukit Lawang and Medan.
I will be renting a motorbike / scooter to do some adventure riding and exploring the Lake Toba area thoroughly. Stay tuned for those VLOGS.

BADAK is a kind of Sarsaparilla, actually originally an American drink ;)
There are two well known Sarsaparilla brands from Indonesia; Badak from North Sumatra and Indo Saparella from Special Region of Yogyakarta. Badak was established by a Swiss national named Heinrich Surbeck in 1916 in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra and Indo Saparella was establish ca.1960 in Yogyakarta. Both brands can be found in some local restaurants and stalls.
Sarsaparilla is a soft drink, originally made from the Smilax ornata or other plants, but now sometimes made with artificial ingredients. In most Southeast Asian countries, it is known as sarsi, and there is a Sarsi brand. It is similar in flavour to root beer.
Sepertinya bisa dipakai untuk bersihkan kamar mandi biar lebih cling 😁

Well, that Badak drink is created by a Swiss chemist and botanist, Heinrich Surbeck, in 1916. No wonder it tastes like cough syrup.

0:54 Most warungs (street food hawkers) always serves boiling hot beverages. That's why they come with a small plate, you can use it to drip some of the drink from the cup into the plate so it can cool faster, and drink directly from it.
