Badak was established by a Swiss national named Heinrich Surbeck in 1916 in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra and Indo Saparella was establish ca.1960 in Yogyakarta.Both brands can be found in some local restaurants and stalls. Sarsaparilla is a soft drink, originally made from the Smilax ornata or other plants, but now sometimes made with artificial ingredients. In most Southeast Asian countries, it is known as sarsi, and there is a Sarsi brand. It is similar in flavour to root beer.

Like the milo you were served, people never ask for cold, so he automatically thought hot (panas). You just needed to know word dingin (cold). That drink is a type of root beer, but not carbonated. I think it is nasty too. It is more like tea (teh). In a lot of places in Indonesia, you do not have coke or soda, but you can buy a bottle of cold tea (normally very sweet or manis) James (American guy)

While I was In Capitol Jakarta, I love Coca-Cola very much. The when in Toba, Laguboti, samosir....it's so strange...the cocacola was kind of sharp, then I try Badak. I figured out, Badak apparrently is suitable and tasty only you are in TOBA. I enjoy coca cola if only I return to Jakarta

Badak is actually have the same taste like root beer but without float. Usually you drink it with ice cube and salt in it.

Badak ia actually a sarsaparilla drink and mostly indonesian people don't like the taste same as you, my mother said the taste is like (balsem) an indonesian hot cream for cramp
