Wasn't Barbenheimer just a gimmick to keep fans from pitting the films against each other? Plus, it worked because the movies were so different in tone and subject that it was funny. That marketing can't be recreated repeatedly for terrible films.
@@hope-cat4894 I think the idea was that the audience carried that campaign (I'm not sure if they created it, though), and it ended up with both movies being successful. So it's the audience that needs to "do their part" to help make sure movies do well, according to Stuckmann.
Not sure if he meant it as our responsibility, but I think it is not stupid to suggest that if you liked a movie, or if you like theatrical releases in general, talk about them and recommend them. Word of mouth still needs to be actually done, regardless of a movie's merits.

As some pro said, "99% of the time, the criticism and suggested fix is _wrong,_ but that audience member was bothered by _something;_ it's your job to figure out what threw them off and make the correct tweak." A rando could say "This room looks like ass, it's the green walls; I don't like green walls," when actually the problem is the red sofa doesn't work in the room, and the same rando when shown the same room just with the curtains opened and the sofa swapped out for a basket bench will respond "actually the green walls look good now, I don't know what you did but I like the green" Film makers (who know what they're doing) don't run test screenings to listen to follow every single audience suggestion; they do it to identify problem-areas that trip up the audience where it shouldn't.

the only thing that validates criticism is the accuracy of the criticism. Who makes the criticism, why they criticize, how long they've been a critics.... it's all irrelevant. What mattes is the substance of that criticism.

There is an anecdote I always like to use. There's a football(American) player by the name of Johnny Manziel. Dude was insanely popular. And had talent. But when he got to the pros he was a bust. Why? Because nobody ever told him how to improve. What he was doing wrong. They said "You're awesome Johnny" and because of that he never did improve. If someone had the balls to tell him that he needed to party less and work harder. Watch tape. Maybe he'd still be playing. This notion that criticism is inherently negative is incredibly harmful. And there are a lot of people who have never reached their full potential because of it.
It is not the notion that criticism is inherently negative that is harmful. It is both that people, including this podcast, are terrible at giving criticisms without sounding condescending or hostile and that, yes, it is inherently negative but that is fine. To most, criticism is an unnecessary negative experience to go through, so they avoid giving it and getting it. The panel basically admitted this when they conceded getting criticised hurts. We humans tend to avoid getting hurt.

Even if you were using them as hyperboles they still don't make your argument valid. Also, I don't know where yoi get your data, but a quick research here tells me that well between 2009 and 2019 around 25% of young adults (16-34) go to the cinema AT LEAST once a month. That's almost one third, which is not a low percentage. Second, he is talking from his perspective as someone that now works with Cinema and up until recently mostly as a movie critic hence someone that goes to the cinema a lot more often. I usually watch Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahn for quick review and this really shows. While Jahn not always right, he still shows passion in reviewing movie (and some games). Stuckmann on other hand begin to make "safe, non critical" review for every title, it felt like he walk through mine field, trying not to trigger anything, he seems lost passion

I watched him in middle or HS school then I grew up and realized he had no original opinions and lacked a personality. He’s extremely safe and generic for movie reviews and acceptable opinions. He’s got a lot of subs but I’m sure that his engagement has the depth of a kiddie pool.
Jeremy Jahns actually seems like he’s having fun and isn’t pretending to be some incredible critic whom we should agree with on everything. I used to be a fan of Stuckmann until I realized how the guy just kind of rambles on without actually saying anything of substance.

The whole point this clown seems to try to make is that when he was still a critic, criticizing a movie was good, but now HE wants to make movies, others are no longer allowed to criticize movies because one of the movies they criticize in the future might be made by him. And is it just me or is this guy talking in circles and smashes into the same obstacle again and again? In his efforts of avoid saying that there are bad movies, he tries to circumvent it, like he's driving in his car, comes up to a roadblock and then goes right, right again, right again and right again, only to end up at the same roadblock. And it baffles him. Then he decides to be clever and instead of going right, he goes left 4 times, only to, you've guessed it: end up at the same roadblock again and be baffled again. Then he decides it's wiser to just give up his "argument" and says "you get my point", only to launch into an incoherent rant. But then as he is rounding up his "argument", he starts to explain that there are good movies and that there are movies that..... and I think "what are you doing? Shut up." He then realises that there is actually a word that describes movies that aren't good and that that word is "bad" and he's baffled to find himself right back at where he ran into that roadblock the first time.

I bought a blu-ray for the first time this year (the rest were gifted). It was Puss in Boots 2. Physical media would still be succeeding if people revered the things that were being put on the disks. These days they don’t care if they can never see a thing again.
I think that same thing applies to books too. We live in an age of digital books, but people still buy paperbacks. I buy physical books when I'm worried they'll be censored in the future or I just want the copy in my hand without worrying about charging a Kindle. I buy DVDs for the same reason. Some of my favorite cartoons haven't aged well and I don't want them changed.

Digital media is extremely susceptible to altering, but the bright side is theres always going to be more pirates than companies, and you can almost always find a place online to get whatever version of what you want. Pirates are always going to outnumber moral-prudes/corpos, and the more the powers that be fuck things up the healthier the anti-censorship community becomes.
One thing that bothers me is that streaming "stuff" doesn't even get a physical release in my country. It's one of the reasons I gave up on Marvel after the Endgame - I can't be collecting these movies (even if they were good) because there's large chunks of the "saga" that is behind monthly subscription fee now. If I could buy a proper physical version of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or some non-Marvel stuff like Stranger Things - I would. WandaVision, Loki, even if those were good enough, I can't buy it. Same with Star Wars, there's so much "content" that's stuck on that shitty platform, I'm not going to support their business model, if I can't buy Disney+ shows on disc, then there is no "saga" there is no value in collecting whatever they put into cinemas eventually. Even if it's good.
Nah. Physical media is dying cause its less convenient, takes space, is less ecological and more expensive to distribute. Its fine for the hobbyist and/or collector, but as a consumer product its inferior in almost every way for all parties involved
@@Keijoz Anyone who grew up with looney tunes, Star Wars on VHS, or anything of the like, or has read V for Vendetta, knows that to be less than the whole story. Convenience is not just a readily accessible library of mostly crap. It is also having unimpeded limitless access to a piece of media you can trust is unadulterated. Physical media is more convenient than on-demand when you WANT what you buy. Media on-demand is more convenient if you are searching without aim for something tolerable to watch. Movies are remarkably low profile. As long as you have space for a medium sized shoebox, you have enough space to store a media collection in the hundreds of hours. Questionable methods can even shrink that to the size of a wallet. I just don't buy it that anyone who has rejected physical media has done so because they had nowhere to put it. I highly doubt that customers are interested in the environmental impact of CD collecting, and even less so that they are worried about the cost to manufacture and distribute, especially as the disc copy of a film, show, or game is typically priced the same as (at worst within 10%, disregarding sales) the cost of the purely digital version. If you are proposing that studios are propagandizing the public into preferring digital media over physical, or bribing retailers to withdraw from physical media commerce in order to assuage these issues themselves, I would be aboard. But you seem to be suggesting that the shift is a consequence of customer driven, fair market capitalism in a media landscape just as good as it was when CDs sold well, which will require some convincing. With all that said, my point remains, with one modification: People would be buying more physical media if they cared for what was on the discs, AND if they were made aware of the frivolity with which they were spending their money on media when doing so digitally. They simply haven't yet been sufficiently burned by the sheer cynicism, transience, and greed of the industry, which earns more money by ruining or robbing you of a thing than letting you keep and enjoy it.

Honestly, seeing EFAP take down Chris Stuckman gives me such a massive joygasim since I really hate this guy. With Red Letter Media, they come up with their own logic based on what they believe. Stuckman on the other hand, just regurgitates what the common and popular opinion of a movie is. That's why many people consider Stuckman an absolute shill and a fraud because he'll frame whatever false narrative, throw any group of people under the bus and even throw his own family under that same bus just to generate the most sympathy and likes. The idea that time/effort should directly correlate with pity/lack of critique is absolutely crazy. Looking back at my college days. I could spend an entire year on an argumentative paper covering the HRE and instead spend that time on a creative writing piece and submit that instead, it deserves loads of critique!

Dude a lot of creators create stuff because they love the medium but also because they aren't totally happy with the stuff that's available. Indie animation is a clear demonstration of that.
The bit where the crew are all talking about scenes that get cut from movies despite being really good or important, reminds me of that story about The Grey. Where they cut out the final fight with Liam Neeson and the wolf. As if cutting a fight with a goddamn wolf was the right decision? Movie is practically building towards that climax XD.
General audiences don’t want experimental they want a return to traditional. We’ve almost had a decade of subversion it’s time to try traditional stories and characters. Not a morally grey hero but binary good and evil or a classic romantic love story. I don’t see predictable as bad, a BJ has a predictable outcome doesn’t deter you from doing it. People have an itch for classical storytelling and it isn’t being scratched.

It's really a beautiful thing watching Stuckmann have a public freakout about the future of "cinema" when you know for a fact over the last four years he's been dancing with glee at the thought of his political activist buddies shoveling pure garbage down the throats of audiences, and now that the world has rightfully called him out on what he defines as "cinema" to be nothing more than propaganda, Stuckmann also rightfully now fears for his place in the hierarchy of entertainment media. "The death of cinema" from his perspective is actually the return of good cinema from the perspective of the rest of the world. Things will be set right once Disney is chopped up and all its IP sold off piecemeal to better IP holders.

1:25:20 I have never been a big "You gotta see this one in the theater, it's so much better there than on a home entertainment system" kind of guy....but then I saw Top Gun: Maverick in the local cineplex back in 2022. One of the rare movies that I went back to the theater to see again the following weekend, it was that good. And a big part of that was having that big screen, with the big sound system that you could feel in your bones. So that movie you absolutely need to see in a modern theater. Might be some others out there, but that was the one that sprang to mind....

45:09 I think the problem may be that a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that results are going to be immediate with therapy. That can sometimes be true, but it often isn't. It's often a long and difficult process, especially when you first start and you're just beginning to get to know your therapist.
You also have to tell your therapist what you want them to do. If you want them to give you things to practice on when you're not having sessions, do that. If you don't give them feedback, they'll just use talk therapy, which might not be enough. I had to do this, and it's actually helped. Therapists need feedback to know if their methods are helping or hurting. If that still doesn't work, it's time to find someone new.
I watched this stuckman video when it came out, first stuckmann video I have watched for a long time primarily because he has been so lame lately. I watched it because I was curious to see what the "other" side was thinking and coping. Just now found your video and I had the exact same thoughts as you all did. Bravo!
The way how Stuckman tiptoes about the true reason is annoying, because it’s so obvious why he stopped with rating films and criticizing them. I stopped watching him back in 2018 because he just became so boring. I remember back in 2016 something just changed about how he reviewed movies.

They introduced the shield being infiltrated by hydra before winter soldier, they had lady sif introducing something about Thor 2 before the movie, but they were never something essential to the movie's plots, you could always get that thing by watching the movies, they were just little treats, and after that they started going on to bigger adventures detached from the movies I think if EFAP watched the show they'd probably give it a 2 or 3 at most, but they'd definitely have a better time with it than the latest Disney ones
i tried watching that show, then they made it all about the annoying hacker chick i couldn't stand, and even made her the team leader after the regular protag defected to hydra/became legion. I forgot Coulson was even in the show half the time.
I really liked season 1 and 2 of Shield, but I started getting bored once they started introducing the inhumans. They also kept Nick Fury as a cool guy in the show which puts it in a better place than Secret Invasion.
When is comes to buying physical media. I think as you get older, and your affinity for collections begins to diminish, you become more and more selective about the physical media that you buy. In my early 20's I had a massive DVD, VHS, and Blue Ray collection. I also used to have a big comic collection. But I sold most of those things because I got tired of the space that they take up. Now my collections are about quality not quantity.

Am I going to spend what little free time I have watching the Marvels, going for a walk, catching up on sleep or something else? If something is really good Ill find time for it. Not sure if he meant it as our responsibility, but I think it is not stupid to suggest that if you liked a movie, or if you like theatrical releases in general, talk about them and recommend them. Word of mouth still needs to be actually done, regardless of a movie's merits.

There is an anecdote I always like to use. There's a football(American) player by the name of Johnny Manziel. Dude was insanely popular. And had talent. But when he got to the pros he was a bust. Why? Because nobody ever told him how to improve. What he was doing wrong. They said "You're awesome Johnny" and because of that he never did improve. If someone had the balls to tell him that he needed to party less and work harder. Watch tape. Maybe he'd still be playing. This notion that criticism is inherently negative is incredibly harmful. And there are a lot of people who have never reached their full potential because of it.

First, going once or twice a month to a cinema is NOT a lot. and your examples like the "80 hours a week" are absoutely out of proportion so not relevant. Even if you were using them as hyperboles they still don't make your argument valid.
Also, I don't know where yoi get your data, but a quick research here tells me that well between 2009 and 2019 around 25% of young adults (16-34) go to the cinema AT LEAST once a month. That's almost one third, which is not a low percentage.
Second, he is talking from his perspective as someone that now works with Cinema and up until recently mostly as a movie critic hence someone that goes to the cinema a lot more often.

I usually watch Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahn for quick review and this really shows. While Jahn not always right, he still shows passion in reviewing movie (and some games). Stuckmann on other hand begin to make "safe, non critical" review for every title, it felt like he walk through mine field, trying not to trigger anything, he seems lost passion

Stuckman is one of those people that has more subs than most cities and I've never even heard of him.
I watched him in middle or HS school then I grew up and realized he had no original opinions and lacked a personality. He’s extremely safe and generic for movie reviews and acceptable opinions. He’s got a lot of subs but I’m sure that his engagement has the depth of a kiddie pool.

The whole point this clown seems to try to make is that when he was still a critic, criticizing a movie was good, but now HE wants to make movies, others are no longer allowed to criticize movies because one of the movies they criticize in the future might be made by him.
And is it just me or is this guy talking in circles and smashes into the same obstacle again and again? In his efforts of avoid saying that there are bad movies, he tries to circumvent it, like he's driving in his car, comes up to a roadblock and then goes right, right again, right again and right again, only to end up at the same roadblock. And it baffles him. Then he decides to be clever and instead of going right, he goes left 4 times, only to, you've guessed it: end up at the same roadblock again and be baffled again. Then he decides it's wiser to just give up his "argument" and says "you get my point", only to launch into an incoherent rant.
But then as he is rounding up his "argument", he starts to explain that there are good movies and that there are movies that..... and I think "what are you doing? Shut up." He then realises that there is actually a word that describes movies that aren't good and that that word is "bad" and he's baffled to find himself right back at where he ran into that roadblock the first time.
he's the king of circular, emotional delusion. just watch his "response to batman v superman rewrite" and witness him repeat the same excuse for 30 minutes, all the while pulling out every piece of emotional guilt based manipulation he can think of. he is a drama queen. just a confused depressed person in general and i only say because his misery seems self imposed. he'd probably be happier living openly as a gay man. anybody happy with their wife and children would never prioritize coming out as "pansexual." I bring this up because I think this confusion plays an important role in understand what is wrong with him. If you go through videos of him hanging out with his youtube buddies, he's excited and happy and they constantly make gay jokes together. it's like he's a young boy excited that his mom is letting him sleep over his friend's house or something. but when you look at the vlogs from his wife's channel where they go somewhere or do the same thing he did with his buddies, he is miserable and irritated.
Let’s just all focus on the positives. No criticism or negativity. Every film is now 10/10 and no one’s feelings are hurt.

the minor issue is that it's wrong, it doesn't take much effort to put a steak on and just forget about it. A refinement would be "it takes more heat to burn a steak than it does to cook it well".
It doesn't change the ultimate meaning, but as a rhetorical device meant to convey a point the fact that it's quite easy for someone incompetent to fuck up a steak with very little effort kind of undermines the point that it's trying to convey.

Granted steak *_is_* already cooked extremely hot so it's not something most people generally need to worry about, but the actual process is still more dictated by heat than time.

I bought a blu-ray for the first time this year (the rest were gifted). It was Puss in Boots 2. Physical media would still be succeeding if people revered the things that were being put on the disks. These days they don’t care if they can never see a thing again.
I think that same thing applies to books too. We live in an age of digital books, but people still buy paperbacks. I buy physical books when I'm worried they'll be censored in the future or I just want the copy in my hand without worrying about charging a Kindle. I buy DVDs for the same reason. Some of my favorite cartoons haven't aged well and I don't want them changed.

Digital media is extremely susceptible to altering, but the bright side is theres always going to be more pirates than companies, and you can almost always find a place online to get whatever version of what you want. Pirates are always going to outnumber moral-prudes/corpos, and the more the powers that be fuck things up the healthier the anti-censorship community becomes.
One thing that bothers me is that streaming "stuff" doesn't even get a physical release in my country. It's one of the reasons I gave up on Marvel after the Endgame - I can't be collecting these movies (even if they were good) because there's large chunks of the "saga" that is behind monthly subscription fee now. If I could buy a proper physical version of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or some non-Marvel stuff like Stranger Things - I would. WandaVision, Loki, even if those were good enough, I can't buy it. Same with Star Wars, there's so much "content" that's stuck on that shitty platform, I'm not going to support their business model, if I can't buy Disney+ shows on disc, then there is no "saga" there is no value in collecting whatever they put into cinemas eventually. Even if it's good.

Convenience is not just a readily accessible library of mostly crap. It is also having unimpeded limitless access to a piece of media you can trust is unadulterated. Physical media is more convenient than on-demand when you WANT what you buy. Media on-demand is more convenient if you are searching without aim for something tolerable to watch.
Movies are remarkably low profile. As long as you have space for a medium sized shoebox, you have enough space to store a media collection in the hundreds of hours. Questionable methods can even shrink that to the size of a wallet. I just don't buy it that anyone who has rejected physical media has done so because they had nowhere to put it.
I highly doubt that customers are interested in the environmental impact of CD collecting, and even less so that they are worried about the cost to manufacture and distribute, especially as the disc copy of a film, show, or game is typically priced the same as (at worst within 10%, disregarding sales) the cost of the purely digital version. If you are proposing that studios are propagandizing the public into preferring digital media over physical, or bribing retailers to withdraw from physical media commerce in order to assuage these issues themselves, I would be aboard. But you seem to be suggesting that the shift is a consequence of customer driven, fair market capitalism in a media landscape just as good as it was when CDs sold well, which will require some convincing.
With all that said, my point remains, with one modification: People would be buying more physical media if they cared for what was on the discs, AND if they were made aware of the frivolity with which they were spending their money on media when doing so digitally. They simply haven't yet been sufficiently burned by the sheer cynicism, transience, and greed of the industry, which earns more money by ruining or robbing you of a thing than letting you keep and enjoy it.
Chris realizing that being objective instead of voluntarily joining the shill cult could have saved Marvel (and therefore cinema... somehow), is peak fire, and my only joy in life. Though getting to say shortman bad is also my only joy. As is getting to watch the end of the video after being called away during the live stream. Honestly, seeing EFAP take down Chris Stuckman gives me such a massive joygasim since I really hate this guy. With Red Letter Media, they come up with their own logic based on what they believe. The idea that time/effort should directly correlate with pity/lack of critique is absolutely crazy. Looking back at my college days. I could spend an entire year on an argumentative paper covering the HRE and instead spend that time on a creative writing piece and submit that instead, it deserves loads of critique!

General audiences don’t want experimental they want a return to traditional. We’ve almost had a decade of subversion it’s time to try traditional stories and characters. 1:25:20 I have never been a big "You gotta see this one in the theater, it's so much better there than on a home entertainment system" kind of guy....but then I saw Top Gun: Maverick in the local cineplex back in 2022. One of the rare movies that I went back to the theater to see again the following weekend, it was that good. And a big part of that was having that big screen, with the big sound system that you could feel in your bones. So that movie you absolutely need to see in a modern theater. Might be some others out there, but that was the one that sprang to mind....

You also have to tell your therapist what you want them to do. If you want them to give you things to practice on when you're not having sessions, do that. If you don't give them feedback, they'll just use talk therapy, which might not be enough. I had to do this, and it's actually helped.
Therapists need feedback to know if their methods are helping or hurting. If that still doesn't work, it's time to find someone new.

What Mauler is talking about here is exactly what agents of shield was, they had their own storyline with Coulson being resurrected with alien blood, what that did with his mind, having an undercover team to work with him.
They introduced the shield being infiltrated by hydra before winter soldier, they had lady sif introducing something about Thor 2 before the movie, but they were never something essential to the movie's plots, you could always get that thing by watching the movies, they were just little treats, and after that they started going on to bigger adventures detached from the movies
I think if EFAP watched the show they'd probably give it a 2 or 3 at most, but they'd definitely have a better time with it than the latest Disney ones

I really liked season 1 and 2 of Shield, but I started getting bored once they started introducing the inhumans. They also kept Nick Fury as a cool guy in the show which puts it in a better place than Secret Invasion.

When is comes to buying physical media. I think as you get older, and your affinity for collections begins to diminish, you become more and more selective about the physical media that you buy. In my early 20's I had a massive DVD, VHS, and Blue Ray collection. I also used to have a big comic collection. But I sold most of those things because I got tired of the space that they take up. Now my collections are about quality not quantity.

There's definite specializations that make for easy mismatches, or being too generalized that a person with a specific need should probably go for a specialist. I don't know how much BetterHelp specifies or breaks down using its system, but you don't really wanna go in for Couple's Therapy with a guy who specializes in autistic children.
