Aaargh!! It’s Albert!!! I was up at 3am Aussie time watching this so excited!! Happy to report that Albert is getting stuck into his chop, he has it for two meals a day even though it’s mostly flung all over the room, stuck to his beak and then wiped all over me I’m sure some must be going in! (His daily weight is very stable) I’m also offering the millet much higher so his lunging behaviour has stopped, we’ve also trained him to go back into his cage with clicker training and rewards. I can’t tell you how much difference that’s made to all of us especially now that he’s not a baby anymore and really getting his own mind! Seeing this again has really inspired us to start getting proper training “sessions” going again... I’m sure Albert is convinced that his slaves have been slacking off...

judith weymark it’s always so tempting!! I was on my best behaviour for Dave and Jamie, I only accidentally give them to him now when he tricks me... slowly becoming less and less as I catch on to him! So speedy....

It’s so true, little parrots are just as trainable as the bigger parrots, but they are fast, you really have to watch body language. Albert is a fantastic little bird, great partnership.
Budgies are a challenge but mine are quite eager to work for treats.

Yes often we lovebird keepers get bit before managed to read their body language :'( we also cannot see them pupil dilating since their eyes are dot black. Doing my best with mine tho hehe

Lovebirds are the prettiest parrots, often overlooked coz it's size and cost. It's aesthetically perfect.
I have lovebird, they are very smart, perfectly adapt on your lifestyle, when I go to bed, or wake, without screaming if I want to sleep longer😁 they can learn everything spontaneously.. Perfect little bird 😍

To be honest, I didn't think you could train a love bird, but this little one seems eager to learn. Always happy to see the human parents love their little feathered child to get the best training. Thank you!
you can train all your parrots... and pretty much any other animal too, as long as you find out what motivates them. i mean, obviously, you need to pick tricks that the animal can do and understand, but it's certainly possible.
tzxazrael, I'm beginning to agree with your statement, and having Jamie&Dave from birdtricks, makes it a much smoother journey.
Any parrot can be trained. For lovebirds if you want them to be more trained i suggest you raise the baby, because if it's too old you can't tame it anymore (i mean you can but it'll be so hard). :)

I just bought some of your pellets for my baby bird, can’t wait to see how much he changes just by a healthier diet! I have him eating vegetables and fruits but just now about to start with the pellets!!! Thank you so much for making videos you are the reason my bird is such a kind and well mannered bird!! Birdtricks methods work well for lovebirds! Lovebirds are incredibly smart and learn quickly, but yes, they move fast, and you have to be quick to click at the right time. Using their methods, I have trained 8 lovebirds over the last 7 years to target, step up, step off, fly to me, fly to a perch, allow me to touch their heads, wave, and give kisses. I have captured scratching, puffing up, yawning, and wing stretching. One lovebird, I trained to ring a bell with his foot, another, I trained to pick up a Kinderjoy ball and put it in a Kinderjoy basketball hoop. The treats: a small pinch of white millet or canary seed, or a small piece of pine nut/walnut (to introduce these, the nut size has to be similar to the size of a white millet seed).
That birdie is so cute! And also - proof that you can and should train small birds too, not just the big/medium ones. Is it just because they are a type of parrot? I can't imagine training a sparrow like that for example. I suppose there are behaviors that you can train to absolutely anybody with a brain, but not this "easy" maybe. P.S. I just love how at 12:43 it says "Albert's humans", not owners :) :)
I'm pretty sure you can teach finches. People manage to target train giant lizards. Even train them to hunt for their human. Birds are smarter than reptiles in general. I'm pretty sure that statement that you can train anything with a brain is correct!
You would most likely teach something like a sparrow to target with a different part of their body (such as a foot) since they have such little beaks. Even fish learn targeting, spinning, jumping through hoops.
I target trained my red eared slider (found in the garden), but it took him 2 months to figure it out, versus a minute or so with the 8 lovebirds I have trained.
AWWWW, that is my Keeco!! I have one that looks just like that. I call him my Keeks. He flies to me all the time just like that.
This was super helpful. I’m quite stuck training my lovebird at the moment, and since she’s my first lovebird I don’t have prior knowledge of the species. One of the worst things too which I wasn’t aware of before I got her is that it is so, so hard to find training resources online that tailor to lovebirds. It’s either budgies, or big parrots. 😕 thank you for this little snippet, it’s been very helpful. If you ever train more lovebirds in the future please share some tips on your channel, I’m sure many people would be very grateful for the help!

Clicker training is great with all animals but I have found its especially effective in smaller birds 😊
Thank you for sharing training a smaller bird! I have two pyrrhura's and I recognize how smart and fast they are. I personally like that, and they are also very willing to train.

I can relate to this woman! My lovebird is 4 months old and he's so fast! The tip about offering the treat is really helpful. Johari does the same thing where he will step onto the treat. I'm going to try holding his reward higher up from now on. More of these small bird training sessions, please!!!

I have a budgie and I have awalys referred to millet as birdie crack cause just the sight of it makes them literally do anything. I have actually been bit because I was to slow to get it into place once the bird saw it

'Albert's humans' oh my god that is adorable
I have to interject that having a small bird as a class pet was the best decision I EVER made in teaching. My budgie would ask every single morning “wanna go to school?!?” and LOVED the kids attention. The kids also learned respect for animals and I have hundreds of letters from parents and kids about how our budgie was the highlight of the year. He was kept out of reach in his cage until he was let out, in a very controlled environment. I’d never want a pet I had to leave alone 8 hours a day - they so badly want to be with their crew. I hope schools read up on how positive a class pet is for children’s emotions.

My love bird gives me all kinds of trouble during training. He’s my Velcro bird.. can’t turn/ walk away from him without him flying as fast as he can to me.. I watched the conure video and I’m trying to apply those training techniques.
Sooo cute. I learned so much! I have small birds too and they climb on the treat too. Hand position up high is so much better. Its hard to find treats for small birds too.

This is so helpful. My nanday conure gets aggressive during training if I'm not quick enough she just moves so fast and treats seem to have a value of 1000 to her lol 😂

I have this exact lovebird coloring. A darker factor peach face and "Baby" has that same personality, he wants to go to everyone and love everything. He also insists on being friends with my whole flock. From my conure to my macaw. He kind of adopted my macaw as his doll at this point 😂

At this stage, with him being so bitey, he just flies to the hand that has the treats and tries to bite hard, trying to get it. -.- I'm going to assume it's because he's a toddler...

Hey I love watching your videos! I just got a Budgie about two weeks ago, she is around 3 months old. I want to form a bond with her and take her out of the cage without her flying away. Is it possible to train a parakeet and how can I do this?
We have a jenday conure that is so smart! He is always up for a training session and retains things so well! I grew up with my dad having two U2’s and always said I would NEVER adopt/purchase a cockatoo. Welllllll now our local rescue has a female LSC2 that was from a resort and We are going to meet her at the end of the month. Any tips on mtg her for the first time? I know the time and patience that goes into having a too and growing up with them I always said I’d never have one lol but her story just wormed her way into my heart but I am so nervous for our first meeting 😵
What happened at the meeting? Did you end up adopting her?

My Lovebirds always go crazy and climb around their cage because they hear the other bird chirping in the beginning of the video.
I have a green PF lovebird like that too, his name is Ocha and I love him so dearly. Funny when I watch the video, looking at that bird, I knew he isn't my bird even tho the colors and species are the same... Do owners develop instinct to recognize which bird is theirs? :))

OMG budgies are so much fun and so smart. I spend most of my time with my Quaker but I got a budgie named lemons 5 years ago and He is one of my favorite pets of all time ever.
Hey, can you do a video on extreme phobia? I tried to help my aunt with her AG and it was too terrified to take food by hand, bowl, or by my aunt. I target trained the other AG after getting it familiar with the target stick but I've never come across any bird as phobic as the first

Hi! I have a lovebird and I've been trying to train him thr best I could and watching your videos to help me out! The one problem I'm trying to fix is every time I hold or give him food he will attack me any tips to help me out or just to help with biting

I would love to see you work with smaller parrots more often. I don't have enough space for a larger parrot but I'm gathering these techniques would work for budgies as well.
LthrWrstlr1 we don’t see people bring in the small ones to classes very often at all.
@@BirdTricks I would love to see someone bring you two budgies! Mine have been such a challenge to train, I think because their flock instinct is so strong, and they basically have ADHD and can't stay still. I know it would be better to train one at a time, but I live in an open concept loft and they can see each other at all times. On the bright side broccoli florets are their level 10 treat. Thanks for sharing this, Albert is so cute, his little sound effect when he flies to someone is almost like his own clicker.
@@BirdTricks I guess it seems more worth the expense for expert training for larger (more expensive) birds but from this video I can tell these techniques would probably work for any type of parrot. Just the little guys are way more energetic and harder to keep up with. LOL

@@BirdTricks I used to breed parrots as a teenager (budgies, cockatiels, rosellas and love birds) but gave that up when I moved to Boston. I'm thinking of getting a pair of budgies again (from a pet store) because I miss having birds and I also live in a small in the city. Would the chop diet be the same for budgies?
Hello bird friends. i have a 3 month old female lovebird. i was feeding her the chick food mix that i fed her with syringe thingy. a little under a month ago i started trying to introduce the smallest pellets available, and it's avian vet tested, but she doesn't seem to have the strength to bite into them, so i blend them into powder and i feed her the way i used to with the baby mix, but this time i feed her with a teaspoon.. she is my first bird, and i want to do it right. does any of you know what i can do to make her eat the pellets as they are, and what age should they be able to bite into pellets or overall just get their full beak strength?

Can you flight train smaller birds . I know outside wouldn't be the best for them with predators but more just as a precaution if they ever got out . I'd really like to get a bird but I'm a bit nervous with bigger birds . So a smaller bird would be a better fit .
My lovebird is outdoor flight trained. Pretty impressive. Have found him sitting in a tree next to the driveway waiting for me to get home.

@@samcarlsson I had one that lived 17 years. Start with one bird train him and then get him a mate a year later. They are cute as a pair and they will still play with you. Don't fly them outside both at the same time. Keep one as an anchor bird.
Remember that birds live a very long time, require a lot of attention, and expensive food. It is not a pet. This is a partner.

my lovebird is green satan. he bites and attacks at me for absolutely no reason (we'll be laying down and all of a sudden he's going after my face). i still let him out and try to interact with me i just with he liked me!
Could someone explain me what the purpose of that clicking thing is? I got 2 lovebirds so maybe I can try using it too some day, thanks in advance
They have some videos on clicker training that you can watch :) it's basically just a tool to tell the bird it did something right and a treat is coming :) it makes rewarding more precise, you could also use a marker word instead of the clicker :)
