Raven's Camera Roll all this sound like a bunch of extra damn work just to try live forever in a horrible ass world like this. That's why I eat meat. To ensure I die.
Sophie Ollis I live in North Carolina it hot here and I know coconut oil melts so wound I have to refrigerate the tooth paste and where did you get your mouthwash bottle
I had tried using just baking soda... I got used to it, but a dental assistant told me to be careful because it could be too abrasive. this seems much gentler and much more creamy and pleasant! I just started using baking soda rinses for canker sores this year and it's amazing! Thanks for sharing these with us, I might be looking for a cool bottle in my kitchen for something today....
Ahh yes, baking soda alone is okay once in a while but as your main toothpaste it's probably too abrasive and can lead to receding gums and damaged tooth enamel. It's got great healing properties and is great in smaller doses, though. I hope you do try these recipes! Let me know if you do! :)
I had heard the same thing about baking soda being abrasive and I've heard of people who have used it since they were little and they're 90 now with most of their teeth. Here's a link to a website that rank kinds of toothpaste by their RDA or relative dentin abrasion, baking soda has an RDA of 7 while Crest and other name brands can be over 90 -100 which is considered by the ADA as highly harmful and abrasive. dendds.com/uploads/RDA_index.pdf Do your own research and read up about abrasion and where certain brands rank as far as their RDA goes. Of course the ADA will tell you that RDA shouldn't be used to determine toothpaste and whatnot but I think it's still important to note where baking soda ranks compared to conventional toothpaste.
I just want to say that it is amazing there is no music, the background is clean, the girl doesn't wear make up (I guess), everything in this video is so simple, calm, clean... There isn't much of such a good minimalist content on UA-cam. Thank you so much!
Here’s my deodorant recipe to share, right consistency and effective. Equal parts of room temp coconut oil, (semi-solid) baking soda and corn starch. Makes a great paste and does not stain clothes, YAY! If sensitive to corn starch, you can use arrowroot powder. Add essential oils, a few drops. I like a few of peppermint, a few drops of lavender.
I have started to begin my journey into a zero waste lifestyle. And my I just say, I love it! It is a far healthier life style, I always feel more energized, and it is as eco-friendly as you can get. You have helped me so much and I love your videos. Your recipies and tips are beyond helpful and you are one of my favorite zero-waste youtubers.
I tried both of these recipes and now have been using them for months! I keep them in cute little jars by my sink, and I use a tiny plastic spoon that I got from a little single-serving chicken salad box to scoop out the toothpaste. A little taster spoon from the ice cream shop would be great too! Works great, and leaves my mouth feeling minty and baking-soda fresh! Took a few days to get used to the baking soda taste but now I love it and associate it with clean!
Thank you for posting your recipes, I am a health professional & have no calms using these ingredients! Bicarb is used in places never even thought of by most folk. The key is use sparingly! Cheers
Hahaha, I love this comment. Some people react to new information with defensiveness (which only does them a disservice). That's okay... we live on and do our own thing :)
I am a dental student; the abrasiveness of the baking soda is not sensible in the long term but try just brushing with your soft toothbrush instead! Toothpaste isn't necessary to remove plaque/food debris, which is the whole point of brushing your teeth :)
Ash Lieberherr thanks for the reply! So do you mean it's better to brush with a soft toothbrush and no toothpaste at all? Or is it better to use this recipe with a soft toothbrush? I'm very interested in dropping commercial toothpaste but really scared about messing up my teeth..
If you're interested in discontinuing the use of commercial toothpastes, in terms of the health of your teeth, it would be much better to brush only with your soft toothbrush. This will ensure you're removing all the plaque without using anything too abrasive that will eventually destroy your gums and your enamel :)
I was told by my dentist that toothpaste really doesn't do much. It's really just for us for the "taste" to get us to want to brush our teeth more. I still use toothpaste because I feel dirty without it but yeah :)
This really helped, I've been moving towards a zero waste lifestyle for nearly 2 years now and never got around making my own toothpaste. Today I ran out of it and decided to make it on the spot, it took me just a minute and I really liked the outcome. I used peppermimt and lemongrass essential oils. Love the mix of both!
I have the same problem in Thailand. I know I can keep it in the fridge, but it's just a lot of extra work. I really wish there could be another DIY toothpaste that doesn't use coconut oil so that it keeps its firm shape.
You might want to mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl until it becomes creamy and smooth and than you place it into a jar. For the mouthwash you should use a small funnel when you're adding in the baking soda into the bottle.
Symphoney Peterson I’m sure u can blend some mint water or plain mint into the mix, but it can easily go bad. I’m not for sure about all that but u should experiment
You could infuse the mint into the coconut oil by putting the coconut oil into a double boiler with the mint leaves and let it infuse for a bit in the melted oil. After infusing, take the leaves out and allow the oil to harden again then make the toothpaste! 🙂
Thanks for sharing. Very useful. Thank you. I tried the toothpaste recipe at home. It's really easy to make. However, since i try to use natural ingredients most of the time, I tried a different type of mouth wash. I infused natural mint leaves which i plucked freshly from my garden in some water. After some time, i used the liquid as mouthwash - it works great and no chemical added! Purely safe and natural... Thanks again.
Loved your video. May I suggest mixing in a bowl and then pour it into the container. This would allow enough room to get a good mix going. With the mouthwash bottle a funnel would prevent the mess. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas.
Thank you! For toothpaste I've been using a 3:1 ratio of water and baking soda but it has to be constantly mixed which means rinsing the toothbrush each time before submersion. Maybe that's not a lot to do but I'm definitely going to try your recipe. Plus its cream - wonderful. For the mouthwash; first I'm going to return the one I just bought but incorporate some of it's ingredients into yours. Changes; I'll reduce water from 10 ounces (approx. 300ml) to 7 and add 1 ounce coconut oil, 1 ounce witch hazel, 1 ounce aloe vera juice. I'll use 2 drops tea tree oil and 3 drops peppermint oil. Thanks again!!
Witch hazel is only 14% alcohol but even 1 ounce of it makes the mouthwash taste terrible. Once the temperature dropped, the coconut oil solidified and is floating in the mouthwash. Next try, I'll remove both of these ingredients. Oh and 3 drops of peppermint oil is a tease so I'll increase by my drop at each attempt to get that right minty fresh aaaawwwww feeling.
Hi! I know this a really old video, but I've been trying to 100% start with the zero waste lifestyle and with more natural products and lifestyle, now that my daughter start to understand more (16 months today) I want to show to her from very young age how much help with can give to the environment and how healthy we can live without harm animals, oceans, and all that things. I just start my channel so is nice to found this amazing community and share this amazing tips with each other.
Thank you for your lovely comment. I’d highly recommend checking out Rehana Sara (UA-cam) / Rehanajomeen (Instagram) - she’s a good friend who has a beautiful baby daughter and lives zero waste. She shares wonderful tips around sustainable childcare etc and is a beautiful soul.
I'm new to making homemade items and came across this video. I was wondering what kind of essential oil do you recommend? like what brand? There are so many options out there... are there "safer"/better ones for internal use (toothpaste and mouthwash)? Sorry if this may seem like a stupid question. Just curious and want to get the right items for making these products. Thank you in advance :)
Welcome! I would recommend using a high-quality essential oil that is organic and 100% pure. Cheaper oils are made just for diffusing and not for consumption or skin application. No such thing as stupid questions - I'm glad you asked! Just make sure it's 100% pure.
keb19 I'd recommend looking for essential oil for internal use. You can find food grade essential oil in a variety of flavors. I prefer lemon because I don't like the taste of peppermint.
keb19 hey I'm a random person, but theres a brand called "Doterra" its an amazing essential oil brand its definitely quality.. but you do get small bottles and its quite expensive but i do recommend doterra
keb19 I would recommend making an extract with vodka and mint leaves or lemon zest or whatever edible plant you'd like, just to make sure that what you're ingesting is safe to consume if you don't trust essential oils completely
the doterra are so highly potent also that you only would need to put in a toothpick amount a whole drop would be way too much! so very cost effective even if it doesn't seem like it at the start!
I made some toothpaste today using your recipe as a guide. I added some activated Charcoal for whitening and cannabis oil to prevent gum disease. Thanks for the recipe!
I attempted to make toothpaste last week after watching your zero waste bathroom essentials, too eager to wait for your tutorial before i gave it a go! I followed a mixture of blogs and can’t remember the exact quantities of coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint essential oils that i tried but the mix I made has a very sharp bitter taste. I’m trooping through but was wondering if that was something that you have gotten used to or if it was just to do with the quantities i used?
I love the recipe it works great and my mouth feels incredibly fresh! I was looking at the rest of your videos and i would like to see how you make your deodorant! 🙂
Something I tried to add to this is lemon juice! It reacts with thr baking soda and fizzes, and it changes the texture a little. I'm not sure if it has any benefits pertaining to teeth, but it makes your breath smell better
Hej, quick question. What essential oils do you use? Because a LOT of essential oils are in general toxic like eucalyptus, thyme, tea tree etc. and i cant find good sources for which ones are toxic and which aren't.
villekullArt so i know im a random person... but there is an essential oil brand called "Doterra" its quite expensive... but i do believe that most of their oils are ingestible but.. if its not they do say on their website... idk
villekullArt Frankencense essential oil is really good for your teeth and oral health along with many areas of your health. (So is peppermint). To ingest frankencense or create a mouth wash, add 2-3 drops to 3 cups of water. Doterra and Young Living are the highest quality brands of oil, but I haven't used expensive oils before...
Wow it’s rlly cool how that lasts you a whole year, where as my family and I go through a traditional toothpaste tube on average every three months. I can’t wait to try a this recipe!
I'm going to give this a try! I love the idea of using simple products - I hate looking at the back of products I either put in my body or on my body and having a list a mile long containing half the periodic table and using chemicals I can't even pronounce.
Okay I love this video because I’m all about eco-friendly things, but I would advise you not to use straight essential oils, as it is very bad to be mixing them around in your mouth. I recommend you use this recipe because it is awesome, but please use peppermint extract to avoid damage to your mouth. Oils are not meant to be washed around in your mouth so stay safe! 👍
I’m def gonna give these a try. Easy enough for anyone👍 Love the no nonsense approach to filming it too, low-fi and just how it will look when I make it🙌
when I was young I used to live in Dubai and there I learned about the salvadora persica Miswak which is amazing natural plant that's used for teeth cleaning for looong time and I really enjoy using them, and they are zero waste and proved effecient but I wish that the tree would grow in the west ... rn I like to stock on them every year.. or have my relatives send them to me
Both my parents are dentists. I'm interested in the zero waste lifestyle and I was curious about the baking soda. They both agreed that the daily use of baking soda on teeth can be really harmful. So I don't recommend this. I'm waiting to discover another healthier method
This is a common misconception. If you take a look at the hardness scale you'll see that tooth enamel is a lot tougher than baking soda. However, if you already have lost enamel or tooth decay you might want to use clay instead.
I use a baking soda mixture to brush my teeth but I only use it once every couple of days. In between, I just brush my teeth with a little bit of peppermint essential oil! My dentist says I have some of the whitest and strongest teeth he's seen :)
I love this and Im very excited that Sophia makes no waste things but I would honestly stay away from baking soda from all times. I would try activated charcoal instead.
WARNING: Proceed with CAUTION; the deodorant was fine at first (I loved the smell and protection) for the first couple of weeks; then I begin to notice dark circles under my arms before the skin irritation started (I have sensitive skin); something like a chemical burn, before my skin started to peel; I followed the directions (opted out of the peppermint essential oil to keep it simple) but her ratios may be off because the recipe was way too strong for my skin; I think it was the baking soda that was way too harsh since it is an abrasive; didn't like the toothpaste either, way too salty for regular use; only the mouthwash worked out; DISCLAIMER NEEDED for folks with sensitive skin; I appreciate the host effort and what she was trying to do is help people live clean but results will vary; would NOT recommend the deodorant P.S. I wish I could add photos so you can see what it did to my skin
I commented 3 weeks ago that this had made my teeth sensitive and went back to using my old regular toothpaste my teeth are seriously agony now 😭 I honestly feel like crying
Oh I'm sorry dear maybe stick with regular toothpaste or substitute the baking soda for some charcoal powder it's less abrasive compared to baking soda
Technically you don't need toothpaste...just brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush. The goal is to disturb the plaque so it doesn't sit on your teeth. And rinse by using 1/16 teaspoon of peroxide in 4 oz of water (and if you're like me and can't stand the taste of peroxide (no matter how little the amount) use 1 or 2 drops of a minty food grade Essential oil) Oh and don't forget to floss... I have EXTREMELY sensitive teeth and this is how I brush my teeth. I haven't had any cavities and my dentist recommended a toothpasteless toothbrush. If they are to the point that you want to cry, rinse with water and drop of orajel to desensitize your mouth before you brush your teeth. Like when I say I have extremely sensitive teeth, I can feel the AIR from the spinny thingy the dentist uses before she even touches my teeth...and this is even AFTER she has just numbed my entire face with Novacane. This method helps with my sensitivity issues.
@@tiffanyn480 thank you for this post.. I have extremely sensitive teeth as well and I've been wondering how I can do this without my special toothpaste...that...honestly isn't doing it's job anymore.
Really? Turmeric? The yellow powder that stains everything yellow and does not wash off? I would be scared it would do the opposite of whitening teeth! Interesting..
I make my own deodorant and use empty underarm deodorant container. Just hold against armpit until gets warm rolls on easy. Coconut oil & Cornstarch& baking soda. Use on my feet keep them soft and no odor
Hey I found your cool bottle for the mouth wash p. Saw it on EBay it's called a slow gin bottle. But I typed in glass bottle with flip top... Thinks it's 500ml I like its shape for storage. 👍😀
hi, I love this DIY but i was wondering about the absence of fluoride? My dentist said it was essential to have branded toothpastes as they have fluoride. Thank you!
Hi, if you search about fluoride you are going to see that it's a myth. This website is just an example www evolving wellness com/post/never-use-fluoride-toothpaste Actually a lot of people try and look for toothpaste without it. :) Hope this helps
Dentists will tell you that because they're trying to sell a product, believe it or not. In fact, we don't actually need toothpaste at all, the brushing is what's necessary and the toothpaste adds lubricant. But we'd be just fine without it.
Fluoride is essential as a public health tool to prevent caries. This is because our diets are usually full of sugar, which gets turned into acid by the bacteria in our mouth and the acid wears away at the enamel. Fluoride helps to anchor the calcium ions on near the surface of our teeth, creating a barrier of sorts that helps protect against the acid. (www.nature.com/news/2004/040122/full/news040119-8.html) Now if you don't have a crappy diet, don't eat that much fruit, and drink tons of water then perhaps baking soda is enough to neutralise the acids in mouth before bed and brushing will get rid the biofilm on top of our teeth. But baking soda is not recommended for anyone with receding gums, as you may be scraping away at the exposed dentin and damaging the tooth.
@AndreiaMachado Hi, I just wanted to inform you that a blog post is not considered valid evidence. And neither does the fact that a lot of people do a thing make the doing a good thing. That is one of the points against fluoride, isn't it? (That just because most people brush with fluoride, doesn't make fluoride worth using). Nevertheless, there are some issues I'd like to point out from your link. Firstly, you should alway be wary of sources that advertise, promote products or have links to products in the post. I'm not saying they are all liars, but just to be wary. That blog post has several. Secondly, also be wary of headline that sensationalise. They are clickbaiting and therefore trying to sell you something. And not the fun, Buzzfeed kind. Thirdly and most importantly, sites that proclaim without citing, as seen here "The biggest scientific proof for not needing the fluoride in water is that tooth decay has dropped at the same rate in countries with, and without, water fluoridation." should also be taken with a grain of salt. So where is this scientific proof? What study showed this? It doesn't take long to dig up an article. Here's a systemic review that shows fluoridation DOES help with caries (tooth decay) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28289474?log$=activity. It took me 2 minutes to find. Links to Wikipedia pages are sadly not acceptable. Not saying that EvolvingWellness is a shit site, but just trying to raise awareness on how research and science journalism should be done. I do understand the fear of fluoride being used in public water as children are the most susceptible to bodily and neurological damage (the mechanisms of which we do not yet understand), however there are easy ways to remove it (boiling, filtering), so I can't say the outcry in this article of it being a violation of human rights has any basis. I hope you found this useful.
I wanted to use this recipe, but perhaps, I'd use less baking soda. I've researched that it might be too abrasive. My grandpa never used any toothpaste, he only used sea salt with a tree twig as a toothbrush. At 91, before he passed, he still had most of his teeth. Since sea salt helps in making our teeth stronger, instead of having equal parts with baking soda, I'd probably take half for each tbs. Ex. 2tbs coconut oil, 1.5 sea salt, 0.5 baking soda and essential oils. Do you think this would be a better idea?
This is a common concern but baking soda is softer than tooth enamel on the hardness scale and so it wont hurt your teeth. If you have cavities you could leave the baking soda out and it'll still work fine.
I used to have really sensitive teeth, painful with eating ice etc. Now I have been using this baking soda toothpaste for quite a while, and have had no sensitivity at all. And my teeth are great!!
No, I live in London and it doesn't get warm enough here for it to melt. But if you live in a hot climate you can always either keep it in the fridge or spoon it into your mouth (it melts in the mouth anyway so wont make a difference).
I made some yesterday for the first time and mine melted :/ I'm an hour outside London (and I used lemon essential oil and some stevia instead of peppermint and it tasted so good I wanted to eat it!)
Please do proper research or ask the opinion of a dentist before sharing things like these on the internet. It is great you adopt this lifestile and I admire you, but you should take care what you share cause lot of people take into account your opinion (right or wrong...)
Thanks for the great video! Do you not worry about ingesting essential oils? They're not food grade, and I would worry about ingesting them (they're for topical, not internal use)
Hey love, not too sure where you live but some places do sell coconut oil in bulk!! (Bulk Barn in Canada does) I know that jar will get reused for something else but just a little tip if ya didn't know!! :))
Thank you. I find as much stuff in bulk as possible. Unfortunately the UK has a lot of catching up to do and doesn't sell much in bulk or without packaging.
Hi, Sophie! Loved the recipes. I made another jar of toothpaste today and I think I used too much peppermint essential oil. It feels really weird on the tongue. Do you know how to fix it? Thank you!
adding food grade activated charcoal gives your toothpaste a little bit of whitening power (apparently, but i think so) and it makes it look different from the deodorant!!
I'm surprised by the way you made the toothpaste. I would have melted the coconut oil for better blending. But great ideas, i cannot wait to try these homemade products. Thanks
Hi! I've been using this recipe for a while, and I LOVE IT. Stopped using it, though, several dentists told me that baking soda can demineralize your teeth. Not sure how much baking soda you have to introduce your teeth in for this to happen, but was too scared to take the risk. Now I'm using a lush tooth powder, but I'm not very fond of it. The "clean feeling" has got nothing to do with my home made paste. Where have you investigated whether or not it is harmful?
Too much baking soda isn't good as it's abrasive. Adding a little to coconut oil is okay as long as you're not overdoing it. I've used LUSH tooth powders before and they're okay, but they now come in plastic containers (they use to come in recyclable cardboard). That's why I stopped using them.
just ordered what you showed us in this video, cant wait to get them and make my own versions of mouthwash and toothpaste. one thing im not so sure is: the peppermint i order is in liquid form, and it doesnt say it is essential oil - so i assume it is for food making. hopefully it serves the purpose too. thanks.
Ahh yes it does sound like you’ve bought peppermint for cooking. I think it would be sugar-filled and therefore not good for your teeth. Luckily peppermint essential oil tends to be fairly affordable... and you can always bake cookies with the other one!
Blue Ollis i ordered from iherb website, i had a look, the product i ordered showed me the ingredients which are organic sunflower oil and organic peppermint oil - would be ok to use?
I am making both today! Not exactly "dirt cheap" ingredients, both the coconut oil and the essential oil was quite expensive... Don't know if that depends on where you live in the world, but hopefully they will last me a long time!
Compared to buying a new product every 6 weeks or so it's really affordable. Particularly because I buy in bulk. I'm glad you've made some for yourself, I'd love to hear how you get on!
Doesn’t the coconut oil clog the drain? I know every time I’ve swished/oil pulled with coconut oil, even if it said to spit in sink, I’d be afraid of it hardening 🤷🏼♀️. This may be somewhere else in the comments, but I didn’t feel like scrolling that long. I LOVE the ingredients! Thanks for sharing!
Yes! This is something I probably should have mentioned in the video because I have received a lot of questions about it. DO NOT SPIT IN THE SINK! Spit in your bin.
♥️ this, I’ve been looking for a thyroid friendly toothpaste, never considered making one! Thank you for sharing this hun you have so much great tips in your videos and your dog is too cute 🥰 xxx
Erin N sorry I’m one year late but yes as she says coconut oil does clog up your drain so she recommends to spit it in the bin... Hope this helps.. have a good day!!
Hey, I recently started watching your stuff, and I was hoping to ask you; could you please put your recipe in the description so that we can just make the stuff if we’ve forgotten the exact amounts?
Hi Sophie! Question, I live in Greece, and now that is spring time and it gets warmer, the coconut oil becomes liquid in it's jar. It hardens again during winter... So how can I make this recipe? Does it work if it's melted? Or should I keep my toothpaste in fridge? -Thanks in advance :)
Hi Sophie, love the vid an eager to try it. But just read about the essential oil, peppermint oil is toxic to ingest? Is there a particular brand of peppermint oil i'm supposed to purchase?
Hiya! I hope you're well, I'm in a bit of a panic at the moment. Freaking out about the things we're consuming and the chemicals we're being fed, I'd love some advice on this...I'm struggling to make a decision. Can this toothpaste be used twice daily?....every day, seven days a week. Also, how are your teeth now compared to when you started using this? Last question, are you visiting a dentist and having postive or negative feedback? Thank you so much for making this video xxx
Great questions! Try not to panic too much, I know it's a lot emotionally when you realise the harm these things we've considered safe our whole lives can do, but breathe and keep moving forward doing better each day. Yes, I've used this toothpaste for years exclusively twice daily and had no trouble with it. If you already have cavities or eroded tooth enamel I'd suggest speaking with a dentist first, but if you have healthy teeth then this toothpaste is safe to use. I have been to the dentist and only had a clean bill of tooth health ever since using this DIY. I haven't had a filling or any other issue since using it.
NOTES ON THIS VIDEO
1. Please spit in your bin as coconut oil can clog your drains.
2. Baking soda is softer on the hardness scale than tooth enamel so will not damage your teeth if they are in a healthy condition. However, if you have cavities or decay already the baking soda may be too abrasive as your protective layer of enamel is no longer present.
3. The essential oils are completely optional so if you don't want to use them orally just skip this step.
Blue Ollis hahah I was just about to ask you if you spit in the bin 🎯
It disappears in my mouth when I use it
Omg no wonder why my sink keeps getting clogged 😭
Are the essential oils food grade? Any essential oils I have seen say that they are for external use only.
get a food grade one!! so you dont get sick.
For anyone watching here are the recipes;
Toothpaste
2 parts coconut oil
1 part baking soda
(Optional) 20 drops peppermint essential oil
Mouthwash
Full jar/bottle water (approx 300ml)
1 tea spoon of baking soda
(Optional) essential oil to taste
Thank you so much! I couldn't handle the sound effects
But here in india oil remains in liquid form.
Is it cold pressed coconut oil?
pivotdudee can you eat essential oil?
Luna and Natalie no you can't. You're supossed to spit the mixture either is toothpaste or mouthwash.
ALWAYS USE FOOD GRADE ESSENTIAL OILS AND RESEARCH WHICH CAN AND CAN'T BE USED FOR PREGNANCY OR ANY CONDITIONS YOU MAY HAVE SUCH AS EPILEPSY!!
Spinelli or itsy use peppermint extract, which is literally meant to be consumed
...or your pet may get fatally sick! essentials oils can be extremely toxic to pets.
Spinelli THANK YOU for saying that. I know nothing about those oils other than waht i see on blogs and i was like😵 when you added it. 😂
AAA I WISH I KNEW I PUT CINNAMON OIL ON MY WRIST AND NECK AND I HAVE HUGE RED MARKS LMAOO
Ugh, upper case sentences will do more damage to your health! Stop it
can you please make a series where you do DIYS for zero waste, minamalist, eco friendy, and vegan things? ♡
Thank you for your suggestion, I have plenty of recipes coming up (vegan food, zero waste products, etc)!
Sophie Ollis please make a video of how you make your deodorant!
I will!
That's so true with the baking soda!
Woops. I have been using just baking soda
I had heard the same thing about baking soda being abrasive and I've heard of people who have used it since they were little and they're 90 now with most of their teeth. Here's a link to a website that rank kinds of toothpaste by their RDA or relative dentin abrasion, baking soda has an RDA of 7 while Crest and other name brands can be over 90 -100 which is considered by the ADA as highly harmful and abrasive.
dendds.com/uploads/RDA_index.pdf
Do your own research and read up about abrasion and where certain brands rank as far as their RDA goes. Of course the ADA will tell you that RDA shouldn't be used to determine toothpaste and whatnot but I think it's still important to note where baking soda ranks compared to conventional toothpaste.
You can substitute with arrowroot! It’s much gentler
Awesome!!! Thank you for this video. I'm gonna make this for my wife and Surprise her with it as a gift. She'll love this.
Oh, she'll love that! What a thoughtful gift. :)
Husband of the year
I'm really looking forward to the deodorant recipe!
Dan Christopher husband goals 😊
Im tearing up at how sweet that is!
I boiled fresh mint (I didn't have essential oils) and used the water. Tasted great!
Genius
Can I do this with the toothpaste too? How would I use it? I have a ton of mint growing in my yard.
Bro just use lemon
Good video. No obnoxious or cute music, no long pauses while waiting for you to fill bottles, etc. Good presentation!
I like a few of peppermint, a few drops of lavender.
thank you for leaving in the mixing noises I love them
Danielle wow I thought it was just me 😂
Same
I have started to begin my journey into a zero waste lifestyle. And my I just say, I love it! It is a far healthier life style, I always feel more energized, and it is as eco-friendly as you can get. You have helped me so much and I love your videos. Your recipies and tips are beyond helpful and you are one of my favorite zero-waste youtubers.
That's so wonderful!
Cheers
What kind of person gives this a thumb down? I mean this girl is helping the planet u humans live on.
Hahaha, I love this comment. Some people react to new information with defensiveness (which only does them a disservice). That's okay... we live on and do our own thing :)
Perfect name for this video:
Deodorant in my mouth, toothpaste under my arms
Thanks for the recipes! Any dentists watching? I'd love to hear from you. Is this sensible in the long term?
Thank you! That's very helpful :)
HERE IN INDIA WE NEVER HAVE THAT TYPE OF COCONUT OIL (IT'S ALWAYS IN melted form because of the weather and heat.!!)
It’s the same product just solid here because it’s cool all year round in the U.K.
Put it in your refrigerator. That should keep it solid.
@@danielw.7705 Thank you
@@danielw.7705 It'll melt as soon as it's in your mouth so no need for it to be solid.
I grow my own mint, would making a paste with the mint be a good replacement for the essential oil?
Symphoney Peterson I’m sure u can blend some mint water or plain mint into the mix, but it can easily go bad. I’m not for sure about all that but u should experiment
Using a pestle to crush the leaves ? I think it could work! Good idea!
I understand that arrowroot powder can be used instead of baking soda, to reduce abrasion. These are nice recipes
Yes! I do the same recipe with arrowroot instead of BS and it works great.
Loved your video. May I suggest mixing in a bowl and then pour it into the container. This would allow enough room to get a good mix going. With the mouthwash bottle a funnel would prevent the mess. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas.
Thank you for the suggestions! I think mixing before adding is a great idea, I’ll do that next time.
Where did you get the mouth wash jar from🤔
Oh and 3 drops of peppermint oil is a tease so I'll increase by my drop at each attempt to get that right minty fresh aaaawwwww feeling.
activated charcoal powder in toothpaste is wonderful
Ahh I have tried this and it's great for detoxing the body! Thanks for the tip!
Sophie Ollis i was just about to ask about this. do you think making this & also adding the charcoal would be okay?
Yes, that's a great idea!
Activated charcoal ruins teeth as it's really abrasive no dentist would recommend
I don’t get why people keep recommending activated charcoal. it actually doesn’t have any benefits for your teeth
Thanks so much for the the time to reply and guide me in the best direction :)
I have been making your version of the toothpaste for the past 2 and a 1/2 years. It works great. Thank you thank you thank you
Could you also do the deodorant as well?!
Yes, you'll have access to my deodorant recipe very soon ;)
Niamh Maw please make sure your oil is safe to put in your mouth
Niamh Maw add vanilla extract or cinnamon
I love the simplicity of it! Most DIYs are so complicated and for show. I haven’t made the toothpaste yet but the mouth wash is amazing. Thank you 🙏🏼
I love the recipe it works great and my mouth feels incredibly fresh!
I was looking at the rest of your videos and i would like to see how you make your deodorant! 🙂
Something I tried to add to this is lemon juice! It reacts with thr baking soda and fizzes, and it changes the texture a little. I'm not sure if it has any benefits pertaining to teeth, but it makes your breath smell better
this recipe is perfect! i used tee trea, jasmin and grapefruit oil for de scent :)
Great combo!
I have allergies, and moving into a new smaller space on my own. I have been working my way to zero waste living. i would love to try these recipes!
Does the coconut oil toothpaste clog the drain?
I would recommend spitting it in the trash or toilet because coconut oil will clog your drain
Wow, I'm blown away by how simple those ingredients and recipes are! I'll definitely give it a go when I run out of my current toothpaste!
Hej, quick question. What essential oils do you use? Because a LOT of essential oils are in general toxic like eucalyptus, thyme, tea tree etc. and i cant find good sources for which ones are toxic and which aren't.
You're right, some are not meant to be ingested or used without dilution. I use a 100% pure peppermint essential oil.
villekullArt so i know im a random person... but there is an essential oil brand called "Doterra" its quite expensive... but i do believe that most of their oils are ingestible but.. if its not they do say on their website... idk
villekullArt Frankencense essential oil is really good for your teeth and oral health along with many areas of your health.
(So is peppermint).
To ingest frankencense or create a mouth wash, add 2-3 drops to 3 cups of water.
Doterra and Young Living are the highest quality brands of oil, but I haven't used expensive oils before...
villekullArt coconut oil pepermint or neem
I usually use dottera essential oils. They work great for this especially the peppermint one.
Melted coconut oil is amazing for mouth wash!! Just mix in desired essential oil.
Hey there :) I realy like the recipe, but doesn't the Coconut Oil clog the pipes?
Good question! No because I'm only using a small amount (a pea size) and I use warm water to rinse (so it melts).
Thanks a lot:)
Wow it’s rlly cool how that lasts you a whole year, where as my family and I go through a traditional toothpaste tube on average every three months. I can’t wait to try a this recipe!
thank you so much for sharing your recipe with us:) i will try it.Greetings from Berlin LOTTA
Hi to Berlin! :)
lafille lotta what's the image you have?
ladama it is the Skyline of New York:)
I'm going to give this a try! I love the idea of using simple products - I hate looking at the back of products I either put in my body or on my body and having a list a mile long containing half the periodic table and using chemicals I can't even pronounce.
Would I be able to add charcoal to make it a whitening toothpaste?
Absolutely!
is it possible if i use the liquid coconut oil instead of cold pressed? because cold pressed is hard to find and expensive as well
Yes, as long as it’s pure and organic.
@@blueollis i can't find cold pressed coconut oil too. but then it won't be as creamy as your recipe. is anything i could add to make it more creamy?
I’m def gonna give these a try. Easy enough for anyone👍 Love the no nonsense approach to filming it too, low-fi and just how it will look when I make it🙌
when I was young I used to live in Dubai and there I learned about the salvadora persica Miswak which is amazing natural plant that's used for teeth cleaning for looong time and I really enjoy using them, and they are zero waste and proved effecient but I wish that the tree would grow in the west ... rn I like to stock on them every year.. or have my relatives send them to me
That's so interesting! Thank you for sharing. I've never heard of it before, I'll have to look into it.
Mouthwash is soooo expensive! This is the first zero waste recipe that I came across, thank you soooo much! ♡
It's pricey AND toxic! Keep clear! I'm glad you liked the recipe... it's easy, cheap and good for your health :)
You can use charcoal instead of backing soda
I've also heard that baking soda is fine with a soft brush and don't brush 'aggressively.'
I use coconut oil alone for brushing my teeth. It’s great for fighting bacteria, bad breath and it also whitens the teeth!
hi. do you mean std coconut oil can have in buckets in supermarkets?
You could also mix the ingredients in the pitcher and then pour it into the bottle
You could probably add turmeric to the tooth paste
Yeah, I've tried that before. Works really well to whiten the teeth!
Really? Turmeric? The yellow powder that stains everything yellow and does not wash off? I would be scared it would do the opposite of whitening teeth! Interesting..
Haha yes, it's great for teeth whitening, just not for anything else
FreakyBo0o yeah I know is weird but it does whiten your teeth. I found out by drinking golden milk
I use 2 tsp xylitol with this mix and also peppermint flavouring not oil. The xylitol is well researched and anti bacterial.
Can't wait to make these, Sohpie!!! Thank you!
Oh, I'm so glad! Be sure to tag me in a photo of them! :)
I make my own deodorant and use empty underarm deodorant container. Just hold against armpit until gets warm rolls on easy. Coconut oil & Cornstarch& baking soda. Use on my feet keep them soft and no odor
This was amazing.
Is there a similar way to make home made detergents?
Greetings from Banja Luka
I like to use either castile soap or soap nuts to wash my clothes! Hello to Banja Luka!
Thank you, i will try that.
Sophie Ollis how much Castile soap do you use for a full load of laundry?
A quick squeeze (probably about 1 tbsp). You don't need a lot as it's highly concentrated.
Thanks great vid, you could use simply salty water for mouth wash as brine kills bacteria dead one time. And it’s cheap.
Hey I found your cool bottle for the mouth wash p. Saw it on EBay it's called a slow gin bottle. But I typed in
glass bottle with flip top... Thinks it's 500ml I like its shape for storage. 👍😀
I add activated charcoal to mine also. It really whitens your teeth.
You should try a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash recipe, super great!
I"ll definitely try these as soon as I get to Hawaii. Beginning a zero waste journey after a major move. i'm excited!
What about floss?
Still searching for that ethical and zero-waste floss!
Sophie Ollis you should look into water piks!
I have. Again, it's more plastic!
A metal tool and/or a vegan "silk" floss perhaps. (:
i suggest using miswak, because it does have alot of health benifits and does not need any toothpaste~
hi, I love this DIY but i was wondering about the absence of fluoride? My dentist said it was essential to have branded toothpastes as they have fluoride. Thank you!
Hi, if you search about fluoride you are going to see that it's a myth. This website is just an example
www evolving wellness com/post/never-use-fluoride-toothpaste
Actually a lot of people try and look for toothpaste without it. :) Hope this helps
Dentists will tell you that because they're trying to sell a product, believe it or not. In fact, we don't actually need toothpaste at all, the brushing is what's necessary and the toothpaste adds lubricant. But we'd be just fine without it.
Sophie Ollis thank you so much!! I was never aware of this.
(www.nature.com/news/2004/040122/full/news040119-8.html)
Now if you don't have a crappy diet, don't eat that much fruit, and drink tons of water then perhaps baking soda is enough to neutralise the acids in mouth before bed and brushing will get rid the biofilm on top of our teeth. But baking soda is not recommended for anyone with receding gums, as you may be scraping away at the exposed dentin and damaging the tooth.
@AndreiaMachado
Hi, I just wanted to inform you that a blog post is not considered valid evidence.
If you have cavities you could leave the baking soda out and it'll still work fine.
make sure your oil is food grade people
Thank you... YES!
I used to have really sensitive teeth, painful with eating ice etc. Now I have been using this baking soda toothpaste for quite a while, and have had no sensitivity at all. And my teeth are great!!
That’s wonderful to hear! 🙏🏻
but doest your toothpaste melt in the summer?
No, I live in London and it doesn't get warm enough here for it to melt. But if you live in a hot climate you can always either keep it in the fridge or spoon it into your mouth (it melts in the mouth anyway so wont make a difference).
yeah you're right, i was just curious :) used it today for the First time, its amaaaziiiing
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I made some yesterday for the first time and mine melted :/ I'm an hour outside London (and I used lemon essential oil and some stevia instead of peppermint and it tasted so good I wanted to eat it!)
That's okay... still totally useable! It melts in the mouth anyway either way.
Do you keep the mouthwash in the fridge? Water, even filtered water, contain microorganisms and grow bacteria if left at room temperature. ❤️
Please do proper research or ask the opinion of a dentist before sharing things like these on the internet. It is great you adopt this lifestile and I admire you, but you should take care what you share cause lot of people take into account your opinion (right or wrong...)
I love sharing information. I did extensive research before publishing this video and it's all safe.
Blue Ollis could you include the source where you have found this recipe?
Irene it is the public’s responsibility to do their own research.
I make my own as well, but, I add a drop of Tree Tree (antibiotic) to each. Thank you for sharing. Love and Light. ❤
Thanks for the great video! Do you not worry about ingesting essential oils? They're not food grade, and I would worry about ingesting them (they're for topical, not internal use)
If you want to make the mouth wash anti-bacterial, just add a few drops of tea-tree oil into the mixture.
Sophie Ollis yes, but I bought the ones they reuse
just ordered what you showed us in this video, cant wait to get them and make my own versions of mouthwash and toothpaste. one thing im not so sure is: the peppermint i order is in liquid form, and it doesnt say it is essential oil - so i assume it is for food making. hopefully it serves the purpose too.
I messed up first time and remade it today...I love them both! Thank you for sharing this :)
your voice makes everything better 💚
Very nice video👌🏻you can also add salt to your mouthwash it’s antibacterial👍
♥️ this, I’ve been looking for a thyroid friendly toothpaste, never considered making one! Thank you for sharing this hun you have so much great tips in your videos and your dog is too cute 🥰 xxx
Love how simple this is! Does it ever clog your drain? I’ve just heard coconut oil does that sometimes 🤔
Great, thanks for sharing and so inexpensive to put together and all natural ingredients. Awesome.
I have reusable silicone squeezed bottles and I use that for toothpaste
Peppermint and lemon EO makes a nice toothpaste flavour
