What we throw out goes back into our food supply. Everything runs in a cycle and mindless consumption is corrupting that cycle. This is not just an environmental issue, it's a YOU issue. The average American is expected to throw away 90,000 pounds of trash in their lifetime.
Cutting down on plastic is imperative to insuring our wildlife and food supply does not become completely wiped out for future generations. The ocean is a big concern for me with our coral dying all over the planet as plastic whirlpools the size of continent are forming, extinguishing entire species and killing countless marine wildlife. If a washed up whale stomaching 64 pounds of plastic they had digested doesn’t make you sick, I really don’t know what else to say. Most adults don't need straws, but the elderly and disabled people can find them very useful. They are pretty necessary but I agree that encouraging reusable ones is the best way.

I work residential for mentally and physically disabled individuals and we always use reusable straws. Im trying to get a compost bin for the house i work at but most of my coworkers have the mindset "im not being paid for that" so its difficult.
gloriASMR very true, plastic straws should be the minority and only used when plastic.
Make them compostable straws made form bamboo. Same amount able to be produced, without the harmful side effects plastic ones have.
Jessica Kellgren-Frozard (I hope I’m spelling her name right) actually made a really good video of this subject! She’s disabled and needs straws to drink, and she tried all kinds of straws but the plastic ones are the only ones that work for her (bc of the way they bend and stay in shape). She is all for saving the planet, but said that you need to think of the fact that disabled people sometimes *have* to use prepackaged food bc they can’t cool themselves or use plastic straws

Sonya Chatman I’m a college student so I can’t afford to go zero waste all at once. Instead I chose one new zero waste product to buy a month. Now I have reusable grocery bags, a safety razor, menstrual cup, a glass straw, a bamboo toothbrush, Reusable face wipes, and I buy most of my clothes second hand. It’s a small difference but I feel good about it
Hey! I think your age is the best thing in regards to this! talk to your parents about it, they may not adopt it straight away, but remind them that this directly effects your future! This is the world you have to live in, and they should try their best to make the world a better place for you! I am not as young as you but the world is changing in our lifetime, you are obviously very smart for your age for acknowledging this, I'm sure your parents are super proud and will respect that you want them to adopt a less wasteful lifestyle! :)
Buying LESS is actually overall better for the environment given how much energy is used to produce most products let alone package and ship them, regardless of how reusable they are, so don't feel like what you own (or don't) dictates how able you are to go zero waste, just try get your parents to do things like swapping out plastic bags and straws, and that makes a big difference over a whole family without having to spend a penny!

I’m 13 and just convinced my parents on why we should go eco friendly because it not only effects their future but their kids and grandkids’ future as well. I’m super happy and we have already bought bamboo toothbrushes and metal straws. I have also bought myself a reusable tumblr and am using the web browser and app ecosia. for every 45 searches you make, their team plants one tree. I would definitely check it out if I were you!

depends on where you live. in some areas they won't compost or recycle the bristles and the cellophane wrap it comes in. if you want to get one, research what can be composted and recycled where you live. if you can't compost or recycle the bristles and wrap, its probably not worth it considering they don't do the best job at cleaning your teeth :)
Or use a reusable toothbrush where you only have to change the toothbrush heads. It’s not as good but it’s better than nothing and cleans your teeth really well

I’ve never thought about parchment paper, thank you! My family is super super wasteful, I’m trying to get into a zero waste lifestyle but it’s hard when you’re a teen!! I’m mainly just trying to get into a healthier routine for when I’m older.
You can do it! By seeking out this kind of information, you are on your way. As GI Joe says, "knowing is half the battle".
Even something so simple as using both sides of your paper is a good start (use every inch of that scrap paper!!). For me, one of my favorite things that I can do is reuse containers as if they were Tupperware (butter, juice jugs, those dansk cookie tins, etc). I packed lunch in those things lol. That was the thing to do growing up. I didn't even realize it was recycling until I grew up.
Try to make changes where you can. A little goes a long way. 😄

Ryan it’s not me making them seem bad, it’s just stating facts :) most families that aren’t super conscious about the environment are super wasteful, my family is just another one of them! When I said my family that included me too, I wasn’t trying to target them. Sorry if you took it the wrong way!

Bella Morris it doesn’t matter if we use them or not, a factory has still made them and they are still on the planet. No matter how hard we try the people with the money to make a change don’t gaf they think they’re hot hsit and are really the entire problem

Amanda Lynn Also if less people buy a product at a store then the store will request less of the product and the factory won’t make as much. For example, let’s say 10 people use 5 plastic bags every time they shop, but then 1 of those people decides to stop using plastic bags, then the store will only have to have the amount of bags for 9 people. I hope that makes sense.

Aidan Neumann: The Texas Legislature passed a law that stops cities from banning plastic/single use bags... specifically because of the Austin ordinance. I guess they didn’t want good public policy and a healthy planet.

Wren Sierra My dog avoids it like the plague whenever i have it on but try not to let it get in contact with their skin or fur, it can cause a lot of problems and the dog may die. If it does get in contact wipe it off asap and maybe even bathe them if its all over them. If any symptoms persist take them to a vet.

You can make your own toothpaste! Ocean Wise has a great video on how to make it. It's also great since toothpaste has little microplastics in it that you are putting into your body! I do this in my dorm right now and lemme tell you, It smells like clean laundry, I have to pay like two dollars for the dryers here so I'm saving a shit ton, and for those who have to pay for their electricity right now dryers use a TON of electricity and will save sooo much on your bills.
Agreed. They seem so wasteful to me. I've never needed one, I dry my clothes on a clothes horse as well and it works just fine.
You only need to pay attention to washing your clothes in the morning and drying them during the day (preferably with an open window, otherwise just make sure to air out your house afterward) so you don't get super high humidity while sleeping. And they also take up some space while you're using them (when you aren't you can just fold them away (kind of like an ironing board)).

Take a reusable container with you when you go out to eat at a restaurant! If you don't finish your meal and want to box up the rest, you save from wasting a cardboard/styrofoam container
@@mone1391 This is for restaurants where you stay there to eat the food, not fast food places. These will usually let you bring your own stuff home because they don't tend to have many,if any, take out containers and will just throw the excess food in garbage when they're taking it away.

5:50 in Sweden, the baking paper sheets are thrown in the ''kompost'' bin. The ''kompost'' thrash (aka food waste) is then recycled into ''eco-gas / fuel'' and used for buses

Jaquelyn Alpizar there are lots of community initiatives like that in South Africa. A womens group used to knit washing peg bags out of plastic bags, with a coat hanger knitted into the design. They looked really fab. And all over Africa they take tin like coca cola cans and design it into cars and animals - anything really.

I also think we should start demanding companies start making stuff to last again! 30 -40 years ago when you bought say a vacuum it would last you years and some even had lifetime warranties. Now unless you spend $400 on one you lucky if it last you until next year. Clothes aren't as thick so they wear out alot faster! Even our cars aren't made to last near as long. If we start being more conscious of what we're buying and ONLY buy stuff that's good quality, companies will get the picture. Also there's this product called the trolley bag system for when you go to the grocery store. (As someone who's been a cashier many times I can tell you MOST cashiers LOVE reusable bags! So much easier to pack!)
This is because, with time, the world switched to a linear economy. I worked on this for a school project and basically, in a linear economy, the products are made with cheaper material to be less expensive but they are not meant to last a long time. Whereas a product made within the concept of circular economy is more expensive, but is meant to last as long as possible and is reusable.
One of the solution to improve waste management in the world is to switch back to a circular economy :)
Worst part is that companies are making products of bad quality ON PURPOSE... They want you to buy new stuff so what do they do? Make it less long-lasting so you spend more money on their companies. There is actually a name for this horrible system: Planned Obsolescence.

Amanda Murphy If you buy a vacuum from companies like Riccar or Miele then you can get one that lasts for decades. Riccar vacs are famous for having amazing cleaning ability as well as being made from mostly metal parts resulting in an incredibly long lasting vacuum. Plus they use filters and self-sealing bags so that the vacuum actually leaves the air cleaner compared to before you vacuum. Miele also has great reliability but their main claim to fame is their top notch filtering and their own special way of sealing the bags before removal. I remember talking to a guy who mentioned how he once just ran his Miele vacuum upright for a bit to act as an air filter and within half an hour the room was dust free. These aren't the only good companies but they're probably the most famous for making great vacs.
purplegill10 that's great that the make good quality vacs...but the price tag! Holy moly 1500? Ouch!!! I don't know about others but I can't afford to spend that much on an item like that. Lol I'll stick with my shark that I've had for 4 yrs and still runs amazingly well. ( I take good care of it tho. More then most would think too)
I love how more and more vegans are trying to transition to an even more environmental friendly lifestyle. It shows that just being vegan isn't the finish line, but that there's still room to grow and do more. Been using most of these tips in my daily life already, but some are still new to me. I've been a vegan for a couple months now and I haven't been recycling or doing literally any of this, so excited to start tomorrow. I'm going to buy more food in bulk and also bake my own bread and make my own tofu instead of buying the pre-packaged stuff.
Starbucks takes ten cents off your drink and Dunkin will give you the refill price when you bring your own cup! Target and whole foods offer five cents off per reusuable bag. I have great ones that fold up into nice little squares from IKEA and keep them in my bag so I can always use them. It adds up.
But I just want to politely disagree on the straw issue. I don't use straws personally because I read they cause wrinkles when I was younger and I almost never use them, but people with disabilities often do need straws - straws were originally designed for hospital patients use. Depending on their circumstances, it might be difficult for them to remember to bring them, or it may be physically difficult for them to keep a reusable straw clean. If you like reusable straws, you are physically capable of keeping them clean and mentally capable of remembering them - please use them and carry them everywhere you go. Same with all the other things on this list. But let's not make life difficult for those who are already struggling.

Ya, i had a manager tell me off for bring a reusable cup into dunkin an i tried to order the $2 special drink. She told me she'd charge me full price if I used my cup. I HATE using their cups. I will park an walk in just so I can do my reusable cup. Was NOT happy and every other one doesnt do thar
@@jessa3142 all of the Dunkins in my area seem to take Reusable cups for refills if tea or coffee. If you want anything else, unfortunately they don't. So even though the discount is miniscule at Starbucks, I tend to go there instead
Just BE CAREFUL! I used to work at Bulkbarn and somethings are really worth it for saving plastic and wrappings, but things like pastas are not. We receive them at the back of the store in the same packages you see at your local super market and we just unpack them to put in the main container. You may think you are eco friendly by doing that but the wrapper still exists; you just don't see it :-)
I saw this recently in the local bio store. There were a lot of products in bulk BUT I saw where they come from. From some big plastic bags...
My city gave everyone kitchen compost bins and big wheelie bins for there food scraps, the truck comes and picks them up every two weeks :)

We did this for years in my city in the UK but since the credit crunch in 2008 local government has had their budgets cut and this is one service that went
we have this system too in my area (north-eastern Italy). We have our own bin in the kitchen and when it's full we put the bag into a couple of big bins on the street that get emptied every two or three days. We've had this for at least 10 years and it's going pretty well.

About rinsing your recycling: In my country we are strongly advised NOT to rinse our recycling, because it just will waste too much water. The recycled products will be cleaned and heated anyway. It may be different in every country, but please inform yourself for your country before you take on this advise!

Yeah, in Sweden we don't have to clean the things we're going to recycle, as long as the things are emptied.

There are ways to filter your water so you don’t have to drink gross tap water depending on your region! You can even get water bottles with filters attached that allow you to drink water from anywhere, I have one and I love it!

I've looked through tons of comments and I hope it's already been said, but... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH ON ESSENTIAL OILS IF YOU HAVE PETS!! Many essential oils, especially the ones we usually gravitate toward because they smell nice, are TOXIC to animals! Love your family more! ♥

Another reusable item I love is silicone cupcake molds, they’re awesome! No more paper liners.
Savannah's Vegan Eats I used to have those and I loved them! I would use them to separate food in my kids lunch boxes too! Then I decided I’d be all super green by using them for my daughters cupcakes at her bday party and forgot to tell the gmas and gpas and kids not to throw the silicone liners away...you can guess what happened to them. So just remember to tell people not to pitch em!
I don't completely trust all those silicone products. Who knows what they will find 10 or 20 years down the track that heating or cooling this stuff is toxic. like what happened with alloy cans, plastic food or drink containers, plasticants or Teflon or the silicone they first used in breast
implants, those Gynecological tapes, stainless steel hip and knee replacements that broke down inside the body.

Switch your hairbrush and toothbrush for bamboo ones. When you go to the grocery store don't use the plastic produce bags, get cloth ones or keep your produce loose. If you don't have a bulk store near you then buy items in the biggest bag possible in order to reduce waste overall.

I just bought myself a new bamboo thoothbrush from like a super regular store and it was like 1,50€ or so. So basically the same price as a regular thoothbrush unless you use an electric one. I even like the brush part of it more than on the plastic ones.
I think it it a good idea to switch the toothbrushes. But switching your hairbrush? That just creates more waste. Keep the one you have and if ever it breaks, than buy a new ecological one.

We have silicone straws at home - have tried metal, glass and paper but donr like the feel of them as much but the silicone ones are softer and last longer I your drink!!
LUSH shampoo bars are the actual best. Every other one I've tried it kinda sad, get the LUSH ones!

The bath bombs are honestly the best nothing compares. I've tried some other shampoo bars from Amazon and was disappointed after being used to the LUSH ones.
And they are eco friendly, they use high quality ingrediants, and if there is a LUSH near you they will let you test just about any product.

Lush is good for certain items but the shampoo bars can be drying for certain hair types. They also are pushing the peta insane rhetoric. I cant give them my money anymore because they are advocating for peta and want us to all get rid of our pets , stating they would be better off dead than in our care. Typically i can overlook companies taking a side on certain small issues but not something that is this big and important to fight against.

Oh how funny, I was just looking into buying some of these. A lot of times I just don't take the plastic at the store, but every now again I still do. Looking up the reusable canvas bags. I also buy a lot in bulk like rice, nutritional yeast, etc. I'd really like to move away from using plastic bags for those - I just end up transferring them to a mason jar when I get home so that it doesn't sit in the plastic and stores a lot better than being in the plastic bag. Now to look to see what I can use for that too. :)
If you're in Canada, Bulk Barn will weigh your jars before filling so you can buy your rice right in the jar, skipping the plastic bag.

While microfibercloths are better than paper, they realese microfiber when you wash them that goes straight into the ocean and our food chain. Just cut a towel into smaller cloths and use them instead.

All synthetic cloth, yes your yoga pants and running shorts shed microfibers. Minimize shedding of fibres by washing only when necessary, front loaders shed significantly less and use a wash bag!
Cutting up an old towel is free too, bonus!

A lot of people don’t know this but a lot of tea bags are changed to without the string so it’s just the bag which is compostable! Also paper towels are compostable if they have no chemicals on it!:)
The thing with the paper towels is the plastic they usually come wrapped with. Also it takes lots of water and energy to make and transport the from manufacturer, store, then home.
If you knit you can make plastic yarn out of grocery bags and knit them into something cool that you can reuse as long as you want.
yeah its good for making dish scrubbies and things like that. i havge just started to learn to crochet, but i am a cheapskate, so i am in the process of turning everything i own into yarn :P

@@amandadion1090 in the same way that you turntshirts into yarn. cut strips about an inch( ish?) thikh horizontal across the bag, but leave an inch uncut at alternating sides ( so it zigzags up the whole bag. when you stretch it out you get one big loop. snip the loop so you have one long strip, and give it a twist as you go to wind up the working end into a yarn shape. you can cut individual strips and join them, but this way you get a longer yarn with less joins.
I use family cloths and have made a ton of unpaper towels. I use damaged clothing for cleaning. I sewed the bottom of an old shirt closed to hold my clothespins. There's a lot of simple things to do to cut waste. Love the vids!

I prefer the cloth pads too. I don't ever feel like a swamp with cloth pads. I only use them at night. During the day I use a menstrual cup.

I started a compost 3 years ago, and love it. I compost my tea bags....string and all!....among paper towels & many other things.
Plus every fall I have a huge pile of compost to store for next springs garden & then I start the pile over again.

Here in Australia our biggest retail grocery shops have banned the use of plastic bags. You either have a reusable bag on you (or purchase in shop) or just carry it naked.

What to do when you live in a family who doesn’t want to change in a eco-friendly life??
Hi! I've had the same problem when I started becoming a vegetarian. I explained to my parents why I wanted to be a vegetarian without judging them for not being one. I did my research on what I thought their concerns would be, e.g. nutritions, and what they could do to help me achieve being a better person. I think it starts with the small things and helping your parents in finding a way that is comfortable for you both. You can't do all the things at the same time, but start for example with the plastic bags. When you go shopping with one of your parents, bring your reusable bag and say no to the plastic bag they might want to give you. And if you have a bag with you, you can start already packing groceries for you parent(s) while they are waiting, which will give your parent(s) a good feeling of you engaging, and you made your impact. If they ask questions about it, then tell them why you do this again and ask them questions as well: 'Do you feel like you have an impact? What would be things that you see that could be better?' Try to open up a conversation about eco-friendly and sustainability. But one big NO is to try to change your parents immediately and don't judge them for not joining you in your journey. They just need to support it. I've been a vegetarian now for over three years and my sister became vegan in those years and my brother as well. My parents only eat sustainable fish and almost no meat. It took time, but we decreased our intake of meat, milk and cheese by more than 80% in 3 years. Change and progress are long and frustrating roads, but they are worth it. Keep that in mind! Good luck and if you feel like discussing things or want tips, feel free :)
Tell them it's money-saving and reusing glass jars from jams, sauces, condiments, etc. are great for organizing the pantry and making your food last longer fresh. reuse plastic Tupperware that isn't good for food storage anymore and organize crafts, nails, hardware, etc.
Move out! Or try mentioning it over and over. You can’t make your family do anything that you want them to do. So live your way and they might just follow, and if they don’t then just accept it.

I’m so happy about this video. I live in the middle of now where where it rains a lot so we collect our recyclable and take it to town, about we have a certain area where we burn the rest of the trash and compost the food we don’t use.

The cleaning products I use (I live with a cockatoo, 2 cockatiels, and a dog)-
Diluted white vinegar for windows/glass and general purpose cleaning (do NOT use on stone countertops)
Diluted white vinegar with a bit of non-toxic oil for wood furniture
Diluted rubbing alcohol for granite
F10 for any non-porous surface that needs a really good disinfecting (like bathroom surfaces and tile flooring)
With the diluted rubbing alcohol, I keep the birds away from the area until it completely dries. Once dry it’s completely nontoxic to them- but you don’t want them smelling the fumes while it’s wet. I wish I could use F10 (veterinary hospital disinfectant) or vinegar for the granite but unfortunately both of those products would stain the granite and/or eat the finish. Besides the rubbing alcohol all the products mentioned are 100% animal safe.
For a replacement for the essential oils, grapefruit seed extract (or “GSE”) is animal safe and an excellent natural disinfecting product. It’s so animal safe that I use a couple drops when sprouting seeds for our birds to prevent spoilage in Florida’s humid and mold fostering environment- the birds actually eat it in small amounts. It’s that safe. Most GSE is marketed for cleaning so it’ll have directions on the back for use that relate to cleaning common household surfaces. I don’t believe you can use that on granite either because it’s probably acidic (most acids and granite don’t get along) but it wouldn’t hurt to check.

Naomi Alwis Yes this is important to note, microfibers get into our water supply in the same way as microplastics, so that's another thing to avoid (though ideally we need to lobby companies to stop making them in the first place)

Linnea Brian many bags that the tea is in contain plastic, so yeah there are some teas with non plastic bags for teabags but not many :/ you can always compost the tea inside if you have teabags containing plastic
Whenever I buy tea, the bags are never made of plastic because the plastic would melt in hot water.
My state is starting a ‘ban’ on plastic bags and straws, my city also stopped recycling too because it cost too much so 🤷🏼♂️ I love the idea of living a more eco friendly way but my family just thinks I’m weird lmao

Jacey Jacobs honestly I just saw a lot of excuses. Plus plastic had allergy risk as well and other categories. She just doesn’t want to use it. Also silicon and metal straws are very easy to clean you just buy the little scrubber with it and on amazon most of the sets come with it also a silicon tip for the metal ones. If they want to continue to use plastic straws then they can bring their own straws just like how I bring my own straw, cutlery set, and to go box. We can make the change so can they. They just provide their own.

It depends on a country. Here in France they don't ask for washing your recyclable containers. You should just empty them.
Use fleece or wool dryer balls. They're reusable and also biodegradable. Plus if you add safe essential oils ur laundry smells delicious
