They said that they were unpredictable trigger happy murderers, I thought that while they can be aggressive, that’s only when prompted, and really easy to avoid. But after comparing my play through to others, I saw the differences before being struck with the realization that the scavengers actually responded to my weird attachment and treatment of NPCs. It felt so weird to know that the entire time, they were the things I pretended they were. It was like talking to a dog, while it secretly understands English. The next few times I played, I actually felt like they were watching me and I was so paranoid. After trying hunter though? Yeah I’m not sad when they die or scared of them anymore, and after doing more research on their AI, they are much more predictable and their friendship is more like an exchange. I just don’t personify them as much anymore and when I have limited cycles or an objective, they feel more like obstacles, but still my favorite.

I'm surprised that despite mushrooms being drugs, they're really cheap on rep. Also, if a nomad scavenger sleeps in a shelter with you for any reason, they become your follower for the next cycles (like Daszombes' scav wife)
(pretty obvious but) failed shelters are actually exempt from this! i got a failed one in chimney canopy and a white scav had managed to sneak in with me prior, every cycle i died he always (understandably) ran off. very unlucky lol
The reason drugs are expensive is scarcity. If you were the only person of the planet with wheat, a LOT of people would be willing to sell their first, second, and third born for it.
I havent been attacked by the scavs since I realized I was unintentionally acting scary and threatening, then started lying down and moving slowly till they trusted me
Rainworld AI (especially scavs) is something that is so interesting so thanks a lot for making this video! It sucks that there isn't that much rainworld content like this in the game community because honestly I could listen to useless information and fun facts about rainworld all day. It's such a neat little game ❤️
It is an incredibly cool game. I do have plans to make other videos like this, though they’ll probably be delayed for a while with downpour Not that I’m complaining
Pretty good, concise video. I think the only thing missing is an examination on the way the different modes impact your experience with Scavs. The difference between Survivor and Monk kind of just comes down to increased rep gain for Monk. But Hunter starts at -30 which will make most of them try to kill you, unless you roll a particularly docile individual Scav. But the routing for Hunter is designed intelligently around this in that virtually all Scav activity in or around Farm Arrays is Toll, and the Sky Islands route leads to a lot of areas with only minimal Scav roving. So a smart player can either route around them or build rep quickly in a controlled environment. A heat map of global Scav activity would probably be more or less like a nucleus of Scavs in GW, IC, and SC and relatively little noise in the outer areas, so I think the designers understood a need for players to have the option to take a longer route around them.
This is one of the things I love about rain world, it tells you virtually NOTHING on how the systems work, meaning you have to read signals and figure it out on your own.
Something weird about Scavengers I've observed is that idle groups of them seem to experience periodic, rhythmic pulses of some sort.. They all twitch in sync, and sometimes bug out or boggle their eyes during this quick blink of a period. It's especially visible with Toll tribes as they're the only ones who sit still in big enough groups, long enough to see it.. I'm not really sure what to make of it. I need to observe other Scav tribe types in action to see if they do the same thing (if my memory serves, I think they do.) Perhaps it's some kind of link to each other, something psychic, if you will? Since they seem to have no other way of communicating besides gestures, but they're clearly intelligent enough to have relatively coordinated group behaviors. I dunno. What does everyone else think?
Absolutely going to go see this for myself by doing safari ... Probably do the toll group in east outskirts. the toll before farm arrays I think? I am going to try and give them things with the beastmaster mod too. Will they use rarefication, singularity or rifles? Could the Scavenger AI be modded onto vultures? That wouldn't be a nightmare at all.
You can actually pick up spears from tolls when they're under attack to fight the predator (usually a vulture tbh) and they won't hate you for it. Also if you have a weapon and don't fight the predator you get a small reputation hit.
Legit learnt a lot on scavs, and I'm starting to like the toll guys a lot more from knowing they follow on us just to check up on our slugcat, yeah even if they're trigger happy with spears, also the jokes were hilarious, kudos. Hopefully you get a nice grade, gl
1:21 "Enough talking" i hate/love that my brain immediately followed this up with "have at you! I love these guys. Because if you’re standing, they’ll stab you. But if your crawling, they don’t see you as a big threat. They’ll still stab you, but hey.
You know, kinda wish I saw this earlier. You would've saved many scavenger lives... In my defense, they started it. I first found one randomly as I was exploring. I had a cherrybomb and a spear in my hands (I was going through territory I knew to have many lizards). The scav just sat there. So did I. After a few seconds of staring contest, seeing it didn't attack me, I regurgitated a pearl I had (I didn't know they like them so much, I just hadn't yet found a use for those) been keeping for many cycles. The scav gets visually excited so I pick up the pearl instead of the cherrybomb and proceed to get closer. Out of nowhere 3-ish scavs emerge from hidden pipes and start throwing rocks and spears at me. I run away and after following me for a bit they stop with the spears above heads animation. That interaction changed the course of my story from "the explorer" to "the scav hunter". I'll return and see if it's not too late to make friends with them. Thank you for this awesome and informative video! And yes, I did read everything in the nerd round. Do not underestimate me. Have a good day lads
scavs are my favorite and i always try to befriend them or at least make them like me, not only because theyre less of a threat but also because i feel bad hurting them. theyre so scrunkly and i love watching them interact with the world n stuff

I remember being so confused by tolls my first time. I only made it to the ocean and I was so frustrated with the scavengers because I was like LET ME BE FRIENDS WITH YOOOOU
Drainage system scavengers and I are the best of buddies :) and it was so good and we saved them so many times that they basically saw me as their leader and followed me around and kept saving me , they brought me food and when I had to finally leave, I left two colored pearls, and when I got to shaded citadel after a looong journey, I was welcomed (I guess word got out i was a friend of the scavengers; as I instantly was let through tolls for free, and gave pearls to every single time I saw scavengers. Well once I got to shaded, I was greeted and given a lamp and food, and they protected me all the way through until I had to leave to go to the scissor bird place, (which it looked like they literally waved like the toll guy.
Dude, you basically gave solid chunks of gold to ancient European tribes every time you met them, saved their members from death multiple times, and basically gave them two chunks of platinum as a farewell gift. Of course you’d be welcomed as if you were Christ visiting Lepers!

04:31 "Scavenger strongholds are the only vents in the game without lights" Flooded shelters, whether they are always disabled in the campaign or due to a precycle, aren’t marked. In addition, there are plenty of "one-way vents" where they only have lights in one direction. Examples I recall the exact position of are an entrance into the Gutter in Chimney Canopy, a vent in the middle of Garbage Wastes in shallow water, and a vent in Shaded Citadel near a shelter in the bottom-most area of the map (not directly next to Memory Crypts, but much more to the West, in a room that contains a kelp)
Really liked this. Thank you for making it. I have 2 questions though. 1. You said helping scavs fight enemies makes them like you more. But that's still dangerous though isn't it? You also said later on that attacking the scavs will anger them. So what happens when you accidentally kill a scav or 2 while attempting to help them? Does that still count against you? And 2. Could you please make a video about rain world's lizards? Because I find BOTH the scavs and the lizards the most interesting and fascinating. Because scavs have a karma system. And lizards can be tamed. (Lol but you cant have the best of both worlds. Scavs hate lizards. And tamed lizards eat everything that isn't you XD)
You are right. Helping Scavengers attack predators is dangerous, as regardless of how high your reputation is, if you kill a Scavenger, they will kill you. Man I've always thought of scavengers as pieces of trash who need to die because they will randomly kill you out of nowhere! This video was very enlightening and I believe it might be extremely accurate, MAYBE I won't murder every scavenger on sight now.
I just want you to know that for a period of time we didnt have a internet service and i didnt have data and this is the only video i had downloaded on my laptop. I watched this on loop CONSTANTLY as i played Rimworld for hours.
I do find it funny that this says "they'll talk to you" under the ally status, while the animation the scavs near you were doing is just their idle fidgeting animation, called like "scratching" or something - they're just digging around at the ground eating bugs and stuff LOL
For toll scavengers: They will allow you to take spears for self defence (Or defence of other scavs) if there is a predator of some kind nearby. Slugcats can survive being hit with a spear pretty often as long as it's not a headshot. I've gotten one stuck in my side once after being attacked. Used it to spear a batfly later.
Nah, if you take a spear from the toll camp they will try to kill you or lower your reputation, you are stealing from they but if you have high reputation with tolls they will let you go with the spear without killing you. Then no, they don't allow tou to steal their spears.

I typically try my best to stay on their good side if I can. Pissing off the one enemy with a fatal projectile that can pop up out of nowhere isn't great and it's convenient to have them around and on your side if their are particularly tricky enemies also in the room.
Even if i never played the game, and just got to know it from some building ecosystem video, i'm really love your video. Waiting for your Lizard guide video.
worth noting you can increase your reputation just by giving passing scavs anywhere items of value, not specifically at merchants and tolls. The best way to survive your first scav encounter is to 1) drop to crawl 2) drop your items for them and 3) don’t throw things near them. do this 2-3 times and scav encounters become a breeze

You can imagine my surprise after I found out the rest of the fandom hated them, because they were my favorites.

@@storm_fling1062 You were either playing hunter who has low global reputation with scavengers at the start, or artificer who has -100 reputation with them, or you just got particularly unlucky with that scavenger's personality.
I'm surprised that despite mushrooms being drugs, they're really cheap on rep.
Also, if a nomad scavenger sleeps in a shelter with you for any reason, they become your follower for the next cycles (like Daszombes' scav wife)
Maybe it’s because they don’t have the same reaction we do when consuming mushrooms. Different creatures respond to chemicals differently.
(pretty obvious but) failed shelters are actually exempt from this! i got a failed one in chimney canopy and a white scav had managed to sneak in with me prior, every cycle i died he always (understandably) ran off. very unlucky lol
Hey, I know it's been a wiles since you commented this, but could you give a link to the aforementioned "Scav wife" video?

The reason drugs are expensive is scarcity.

I havent been attacked by the scavs since I realized I was unintentionally acting scary and threatening, then started lying down and moving slowly till they trusted me
I love their intelligence
Rainworld AI (especially scavs) is something that is so interesting so thanks a lot for making this video! It sucks that there isn't that much rainworld content like this in the game community because honestly I could listen to useless information and fun facts about rainworld all day. It's such a neat little game ❤️
It is an incredibly cool game.
I do have plans to make other videos like this, though they’ll probably be delayed for a while with downpour
Not that I’m complaining
"why would you want to kill them? To steal from them mostly."
*The artificer entered the chat*
I dunno. What does everyone else think?
probably bc of code limitations and not intended
Absolutely going to go see this for myself by doing safari ... Probably do the toll group in east outskirts. the toll before farm arrays I think?
I am going to try and give them things with the beastmaster mod too. Will they use rarefication, singularity or rifles?
Could the Scavenger AI be modded onto vultures? That wouldn't be a nightmare at all.
“No that’s not called trading that’s called armed robbery” cuts to “London” was funny
Hopefully you get a nice grade, gl
gotta say, this was actually a very informative video, even for someone who accidentally got the chieftain achievement

Kudos! Never would have guessed this was your first tutorial. GIVE US MORE 😬
Planning to do another one in the future, will take some time tho
Ever since I played artificer, the image of scavs hauling deer skulls up the wall, into metropolis has been in my head.

"I smell pearls!"
Lol, that bit/part there just made me laugh. This did help me understand more on the Scavengers even if I don't have the game myself. Anyways, keep this all up!
I have introduced multiple friends to the game and this video is one of the first things I show them.

04:31 "Scavenger strongholds are the only vents in the game without lights"
Flooded shelters, whether they are always disabled in the campaign or due to a precycle, aren’t marked.
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDD
I do want to make a lizard video, but I probably won't get around to making it for a while (due to downpour coming out + hollow knight guide in december)

Man I've always thought of scavengers as pieces of trash who need to die because they will randomly kill you out of nowhere! This video was very enlightening and I believe it might be extremely accurate, MAYBE I won't murder every scavenger on sight now.
They are shockingly smart. I love it. I hope a big youtuber plays this game again.
I just want you to know that for a period of time we didnt have a internet service and i didnt have data and this is the only video i had downloaded on my laptop. I watched this on loop CONSTANTLY as i played Rimworld for hours.
this is one of the reasons scavengers are my favorite creature because wwell, their ai is really unique
@@CowpokeScav I am actually correct, you can even check the wiki. If a predator is in range of a toll slugcat is allowed to use a spear to defend itself/other scavs

I typically try my best to stay on their good side if I can. Pissing off the one enemy with a fatal projectile that can pop up out of nowhere isn't great and it's convenient to have them around and on your side if their are particularly tricky enemies also in the room.

worth noting you can increase your reputation just by giving passing scavs anywhere items of value, not specifically at merchants and tolls. The best way to survive your first scav encounter is to 1) drop to crawl 2) drop your items for them and 3) don’t throw things near them. do this 2-3 times and scav encounters become a breeze
