Isn't choosing to be an atheist the same as choosing to deny a God? Where as being religious is choosing to accept a God. No amount of scientific research or discovery will ever be able to prove nor disprove whether or not a God exists, because it would exist beyond the bounds and laws of logic and science. So, a Christian is no more naive to choose God than an atheist is to choose NO God. There will never be absolute proof on either side. Therefor, your choice is based on faith. You have none.
I see what some people are saying that his dissertation is more philosophical than scientific. The thing is, evolution is not just of the body but also of ideas and social norms. For instance, things like love, guilt, and altruism have arguments that they are developed traits that aided in creating a cohesive group dynamic to increase the chances of survival. He was trying to broach a similar connection to religion. At least that's what I think, if someone wants to refute me go ahead.
I'm reading his dissertation right now. Its really deep. It is not only helping me understand the perspectives of others but is really helping me to understand and define my own belief system. Buy the book. Its called "Evolution and Religion: Questioning the Beliefs of the World's Eminent Evolutionists" Good stuff!
He explains it quite clearly. His dissertation is in Zoology, yet part of his portfolio of work revolves around a statistic involving philosophical beliefs. This is why history and philosophical science is relevent within his hard science discipline. He is answering a direct question, and not discussing his entire coursework. Simply spaeking to a questionaire which is only a part of his portfolio. Listen up.
I grew up with the ideals of Christianity and Jesus the savior etc. and sometimes it feels like I've no choice but to believe because I've believed my whole life. I was taught the 'seed' of doubt of my faith is sown by Satan himself. So naturally I'm extremely conflicted as to drop my faith and live my own life, and risk being self-conscious that I let Satan win. (which ironically would mean I didn't truly let go of my faith) I don't know man. I just don't have the capacity to be an atheist..
The foundation of those beliefs came from egypt and have a 5000+ year history. Everything we know today came from this religious base- Including Science, observation, and Mathematics. All Numbers we currently use are created from dividing a circle or "sun" with a cross, The amount of numbers we chose to make before repeating again are 9, 7 for each major planet, 1 for the sun and 1 for the earth. Dr. Graffin is a smart guy. Little doubt exists about that. However, after listening to him explain his dissertation on test results that are completely obvious to those who pay attention to this stuff, I have to question the leniency of the critical methods Dr. Graffin's dissertation was afforded.
@ironicsomething No. A PhD usually lasts 5 years, you have to take 2 years of coursework, write research papers, and then do an original dissertation that contributes to human knowledge. The survey is probably part of his dissertation, dissertations are usually the size of a small book. Don't discredit PhD's, it takes a lot of work and effort.

I believe when he talks about religion being compatible or incompatible with evolution, he doesn't just mean Christianity, Judiasm or Islam, I believe he is referring to Naturalism, which can be considered a religion. Or you can consider it this way: Einstein once said "Science without religion is boring. Religion without science is blind." But Einstein also said that he didn't believe in a personal God. Steven Hawking also mentioned the "Mind of God" but he was referring to laws of physics.

I am open to the "mystical" component of the "religious" experience, but I kinda feel that religion right now is causing a lot of problems in the world. I'm not so sure that biologicl "evolution" is going to a good place though b/c of all the chemicals/pollutants & things we're doing to ourselves-its almost as if we are in a race with ourselves to see which component will be destroyed the fastest....

I'm not a fan of generalizations. I can't speak for other disciplines but I'm 19 working on my Bachelor's in Political Science and if anything, I've learned to be skeptical. I'm not a moron. I take things I and other people say with a grain of salt. Academia isn't taught by the state, it's funded by the state. Politicians aren't the teachers.

It's more psychological then it is philosophical. He goes more in depth as to why in,"Is Belief in God Good, Bad, or Irrelevant." Every action we make is triggered by either our hardwiring, education, or environment. The chemicals that flow through the brain and cause you to think the way you do are more biological.

@ronocko There's no clear cut this is baby this is toddler it sort of fades over periods days weeks months and years until you look nothing like you did before. With evolution this happens over many generations, we can observe it in bacteria because they have such short lives that we can see more generations in actual observable time. Look at dogs artificially selected for another example all come from the grey wolf and look at the great diversity between all breeds today.

Anarchy is, IMO, humanly impossible. As social animals humans group together due to our "Strength in Numbers" type instincts. In the group one or more will always be looked to for guidance, advice, etc making them informal leaders. Also since humans form groups, within these groups there will develop a set of rules, norms, mores, and taboos which is a fundamental system of law and order. Anarchy is an ideal, and nothing in it's ideal form can exist.

Having emotional needs is not a good reason to believe in a god. In my opinion comforting yourself with ideas like an afterlife is sign of weakness and denial, which is not ok. We have to confront ourselves with the truth: There is no god and the meaning of life is only what we make it. And that isnt bad : )
@ronocko There's no clear cut this is baby this is toddler it sort of fades over periods days weeks months and years until you look nothing like you did before. With evolution this happens over many generations, we can observe it in bacteria because they have such short lives that we can see more generations in actual observable time.
Look at dogs artificially selected for another example all come from the grey wolf and look at the great diversity between all breeds today.

Anarchy is, IMO, humanly impossible. As social animals humans group together due to our "Strength in Numbers" type instincts. In the group one or more will always be looked to for guidance, advice, etc making them informal leaders. Also since humans form groups, within these groups there will develop a set of rules, norms, mores, and taboos which is a fundamental system of law and order. Anarchy is an ideal, and nothing in it's ideal form can exist.
