Anyone who has seen/heard plenty of Eddie Murphy’s old stand-up routines should not be surprised by how well he pulled this off. He was always imitating people in his family, as well as celebrities like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, etc.
This is how comedy was written. Subjective, and creative. No punches being pulled. Taking risks, and going all in. It is rare these days that we ever get to see a hit hollywood comedy. Who cares if you are offened at this point.

Eddie was too good at playing multiple people and giving them LIFE. I first thought that Eddie did everyone but the grandma. Then years later I learned that he played the grandma too.. then found out he was the Richard Simmons parodied character at the beginning. Eddie Murphy as always been crazily multitalented and deserves way more credit than he has gotten for his acting.
His writing style has to be perfect to have him interacting with himself in a comedic sense... And it definitely worked in most of his movies especially Coming to America
