bro in my high school days we technically had smartphones, but nobody used them that way. Apps were still really awkward back then and the service was pretty slow most times. Suffice it to say we really didn't utilize the functionality of smart phones; we used them to call and message and that was pretty much it. You might think it's a little overboard banning smart phones for teens but I think it would be super viable. HS is a time when children need to build social skills... you really can't do that in front of a screen all day

My children didn't get a phone or their own computer until they were old enough to work and earn their own money to pay for the device and also pay for their own stand alone cell phone plan. We also didn't have TV in the house. By the time they actually accomplished this they were mature enough and educated enough to handle this. By the way, they were not socially ostracized by not having a phone and excelled in their education.
