  • A neighbor gave me this charger and said it's not working. In this video I repair it with new diodes in place of selenium rectifier; new power cord, and put a new meter faceplate on it!

    Great vid! Wondering if you gave it back to your neighbor?

      Hi, actually no; the charger was a gift he gave me. I still have it and use it.

    Those meters should have a metal guard or something I have seen so many busted lens. In fact I don't think I ever saw one that didn't end up busted.

    I have a marquette charger from the 50s that I have to get at, but I need the sign place to remake the logos before I sand down the case , seems to be a fairly rare one

      Oh yeah; keep that. Take good pictures of it and you may be able to get someone to recreate the logos.

    unfortunately, you jumped the part where your installed the diodes. I could 100% be sure which side the stripe was place on the output or input, I watched another video where he used a stud type diode, and says he used one with the case as the cathode. it looks like the anode is connected to the circuit breaker, can you confirm this?

      I don't remember exactly where in the circuit the circuit breaker was located on this charger. The best way to identify the correct orientation of the diodes is to follow the circuit to the battery clamps. The diode's cathode end (the end with the silver line) points toward the positive battery clamp. If the positive clamp comes into the charger, through the circuit breaker, then to the diode, then yes - the diode cathode will point to the circuit breaker. If the battery positive clamp comes into the charger and goes directly to the transformer, then the cathode end of the diode will point towards the transformer.

      @@davida1hiwaaynet Thank you, That is the best info I can find on these things. I saw a repair website that sold the "button diodes" in a case, but they are listed as discontinued. It seems now that the the newer units being replace have more electronics in them. I like these because I use them for my electrolysis tank.

    I have an old Canadian Tire charger- looks similar to the Schumaker one you got working. I'm not 100% sure about the wiring with the diode bridge ( you know of a schematic for these ?) but the strange thing is the no load voltage is good - ~ 13V but hooked up to a battery and it goes over 15V.

    I know you collect, yet if you sold off the occasional unit. You could re-invest in more unique units for your collection.

    Nice charger, the old ones with a big heavy transformer are better than the silly chinesium flashing diodes and impulse repair units that never can repair a sulphated battery

    What did they switch to do a 6V battery? Were there two sets of primary windings?

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet  7 років тому +1

      There's a main primary, and then an auxiliary primary. When the main primary only is in the circuit, it is in 12V mode. When both the main AND auxiliary primary are in the circuit (in series) this alters the primary:secondary turns ratio, causing the transformer to put out a lower voltage for 6V batteries.

    Where did you get the new meter face?

      @davida1hiwaaynet  5 років тому +2

      Hi, they were actually a viewer appreciation gift from PLP Battery Supply!
      Check www.plpbattery.com/ for these meter covers.

    I have an old Napa 85-146 battery charger and it needs a glass buss type fuse and it's missing , would you have any idea what size fuse it needs ?

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet  6 років тому

      It would depend on what part of the circuit the fuse is in. If it's in the 120V input side, you would want to get one that is about 125% of the full load current draw of the charger. In other words, start with a 10 amp fuse (or so). Hook the charger to a depleted battery so that it is putting out its full rated charge current. Measure the AC current draw from the cord, and get a fuse that would carry 125% of that.

      I have a feeling my charger is for forklifts or something as the front toggle switch has a setting for 6 to 36 volts and 42 to 72 volts .

    I guess I should ask what size curcuit breaker was in your charger ? I would think it would be the same size in my charger .

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet  6 років тому

      It was a 15A breaker for the 10A charger, actually.

    How do you know what size diode to use?

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet  4 роки тому +1

      They come in standard sizes. I would use one which had a current rating well above the rated output of the charger.

    Does anyone know what year this particular model was sold/Made?

      Hi Dimitrios. I don't know when it was made, but hopefully some other folks will be able to offer more info. This was part of a group of "junk" electrical items I got from a neighbor.
