I remember walking on her deck and sitting on the twin oerlikons as a boy with my dad. Seeing what they're doing to her makes me happy knowing she'll be around for future generations.
Thanks, I have never got to go see her in person but watching the restoration work online has really been nice, I love to see old ships like this one being restored. It was definitely a huge honor to get to help out towards raising money to fix her up.
I was very excited for this build and to see the video, i was not disappointed. I really like D guard bowies. You forged an Awesome knife and did the USS Texas proud.
As part of community service I was voluntold to sandblast the side of her hull. That was in 2001. I ended up volunteering to stay on just to be a part of history.
Thanks! That's one reason I wanted to do a video about it, now whoever wins it in the auction can watch the build process, I just hate that the camera card corrupted and I lost the heat treating footage. I appreciate you watching.
Great job on the D Guard Bowie, it's really nice! Glad you decided to show your mistakes! Most makers won't do that! Everybody makes mistakes, no big deal, just do it again and get it right! 🤔🙄👍
Matt, Beautiful work, well done and thanks for sharing this. Selfish request for a beginner blacksmith is any fine details you would be willing to share in your videos are amazing and really appreciated, like detail on how you pin the spacers, what grits you use for the final hand sanding, etching process, etc. You inspire us beginners to get in the shop and make art. Thank you.
I was extremely happy to get the piece they sent, The history is definitely amazing, the flooding of the torpedo blister at Normandy to increase the firing range has always blown me away. I am going to have to make a knife for myself out of it for sure. I appreciate you watching.
Thanks! Not currently, I have in the past but, I quit taking orders due to people not paying. I do occasionally sell some of the pieces I make for youtube, they can be found on my etsy shop at Thekiamichicraftsman. I appreciate you watching.
I'm not certain, there were some individuals in the group that had some testing done on it but I can't find their post. The majority of what I had read from the other makers is that it was just mild steel, no real details. You can find the group on Facebook at: facebook.com/groups/451588253509037 I appreciate you watching.
There is a group on Facebook called Battleship Texas Artisans, they will be able to help you out if anything is still available. I appreciate you watching.
There was a big discussion over that on the Artisans page on Facebook and the final verdict was that the deck was replaced with pine at some point. Working with this wood at the shop, it is definitely pine no doubt. I appreciate you watching.
@@Mysticmountainforge hey thanks for responding. I could see the wood becoming a cheaper option at some point given those battleships haven't seen action in so long. Keep up the good work 👍

@@Mysticmountainforge no problem man! Also that was a really good chat about mistakes at the end. It's something beginners struggle with a lot.
Incredible.

Is it a simple a36 mild steel or an alloyed mild
Steel? I’m a little curious to what the composition of the steel they used on the ship.

Include the messed up bits into a future blade pattern?
That would be a great idea for some canister Damascus. I appreciate you watching.

Welcome, and thanks!
How do I save a part of the ship?
