      Easy:
      Wash with soap and water, dry it well with a towel (even better if you can heat dry it on the stove) and put it away.
      If you don't use it everyday and/or live in an area with a humid climate you should put a thin coat of oil on it everytime after washing it.
      That's literally all you need to know.

    Great explanation. I did a similar process for my cast iron pans, eight years ago, and they are still outstanding. Can wash with soap and water. Used Flax oil, baked on at 450 degrees, let the oven cool with the pan still in the oven, and did this five times. My fry pans were used by my mom, back in the 1940's, and they still work.

    I love cast iron, have been collecting it for over 40yrs. My son also has started a collection. He & his fiancee have a pegboard that is on the wall by their range. They receny picked up a kettle ( for stews,etc., to can up for the winter. They bought it at a swap meet/ flea market. A very nice addition. I just used salt on a cast iron saucepan. Yes, you can make pasta in a cast iron pot. I have been using that pan for 25(?)yrs. Loved your antics while you presented your video. ❤

      Use vinegar, salt and fill the pan with water. Let it boil for a few minutes without scrubbing the burnt portion.If desired add a few drops of liquid soap. Take a wooden spoon and gently remove the burnt food. Remove from heat. Allow it to cool and wash as usual. Do not put cold water in a hot nonstick as it causes the pan to wobble. If it was badly burnt apply a little oil, heat and rewash.

    Another thing to know about cast iron is that it can crack. Before buying a used cast iron pan hold it by the handle and let the pan hang down (vertically). Then give the back of the pan a good flick with your finger. If it rings it’s a good pan, it it makes a thud it has a crack.

    Thank you very much Brandon! This video was especially helpful and interesting. The pan was in sad shape and ended up looking almost new, and the process is very easy. I have an old cast iron fry pan I'll try this on. Recently, I bought an enameled cast Dutch oven, beautiful, and did much research on prepping it for use by seasoning it with oil. Used grapeseed oil, but it was a *disaster* and nearly ruined the pan because the oil turned into a glue-like substance and was almost impossible to remove. It took days of scrubbing with a variety of implements and products. Any suggestions?
    Your humor in this one is fantastic....love your videos!

      No matter what you hear you absolutely 100% can use dish soap. You can even scrub with a nylon brush and it does not affect the seasoning if you reseason it after washing for like 5 minutes on stove

    • @llofdarkwater9152
      @llofdarkwater9152 6 місяців тому +2

      @KN-lu5ty - Absolutely agree. I only need a few drops of dish soap most of the time. I've been using everything from 100 year old pans to relatively new pans. Never harmed any of them. Sometimes I only need salt and water, but most of the time, dish soap and water. The key is to make certain they are completely dry after washing, and then give a quick reseason on the stove top, and it's good to go. (I use my cast iron almost daily, and I rotate the ones I use.)

    • @KN-lu5ty
      @KN-lu5ty 6 місяців тому +2

      @@llofdarkwater9152 Yep daily here too even multiple times a day and no need to reseason even every time maybe once every couple times. Don't understand at all the constant parroting about no dish soap lol!! It's sad because people literally don't try cast iron because they hear they can't wash them. And they're life changing

    Potatoes don't have oxalic acid. Rhubarb leaves do have. Hence we don't eat rhubarb leaves. Only stem. Oxalic acid will kill you. But potatoes do have ascorbic acid which is good old vitamin C. In any case, potatoes have acid and that helps cleaning the rust. Excellent video, nonetheless.

      After doing some research I have come to the conclusion that you are incorrect. There is oxalic acid in potatoes (and many foods we eat), but rhubarb leaves just have a much higher concentration of it that would poison humans.
