She stopped using it back in the early 70s when new fancy cookware came along. The old bean pot was put in my father's barn where he used it for dipping horse feed. Oh where were you when I was restoring our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove??? It had sat in a cabin next to our dairy barn for decades and the roof leaked! The cooking surface was a rusty mess. We moved it to the house barn and it was my project. I did not want to sand blast or use chemicals. I opted for some extreme measures in my book, but I was desperate. I soaked the surface with coke, then wiped it off, followed by olive oil and fine steel wool and lots of rags. And worked my way over the stove. We set the stove in the yard and lit a fire. It smelled like an Italian restaurant :-) She has graced our kitchen now since 2016 and looks new. No stove blacking was used. ~ Diane

I was just about to throw away a family heirloom Dutch oven, I glanced over at it and I said what the heck. Might as well give it a vinegar bath. I CAN NOT SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH! 😊
I inherited my Gramma's and have never used it, simply because I have never seasoned it, (nor cleaned it; as you have proven -can be done!).... this video is a game changer!.... thank you for sharing!....
This video was timely. We were given a BIG cast iron pot/lid and a round cast iron griddle (both 14 inch) 2 years ago from an old hunter/trapper. They were very rusted and since they've been out in our junk pile and gone through two snowy winters (Yikes!), I thought of throwing them away this coming summer. But after watching this video, them babies are gonna be rescued and used - by me!
I have an old cast kettle we use on a tripod over a camp fire. One season water was accidentally left in it and it rusted....BADLY. As I was just about to take a wire wheel grinder to it and start the seasoning process over, a friend came by and saw what was going on and said stop. This was his(quick) fix for the rusty kettle. Fill it 3/4 full with clean water, bring to a rolling boil over an open flame (outdoor only fix) at the boiling point quickly throw in a handful of baking soda (stand back, it foams up fast.) did this twice and could not believe the results. Kettle looked like new on the inside.Seasoned it and was back in use that afternoon. No wire brush, sanding or scraping needed. Thanks Skip !!
I do the vinegar step and, once neutralised, I sprinkle baking soda on the pot and then add concentrated lemon juice.... let it sit a couple of minutes and voila!! Ready to season....
I have one that is very rusted, been in our family from the 1900, and I want to keep, and restore to it’s glory of good old Deep South cookin. Thank you for sharing it’s a great help!
I love this! I am the proud possessor of my great grandma's (b 1884), grandma's (b. 1905) and mom's (b. 1932) cast iron pieces on top of what I purchased over the years. I have 2 sets of pans from 4" to 14", several different sizes Dutch ovens, 3 rectangular griddles, a 16" round griddle with a bail, the corn stick pan, round separate biscuit pan, waffle maker with stand, a humongous turkey fryer that sits on a turkey fryer burner outside and more! Now I know how to clean those pieces I dont use as often that have a bit of rust on them, especially the corn stick pan. Thank you so much for this video and I love your southern accent!
Nice collection! I would suggest using a Beewax based oil for those pieces that do not get used as much. I takes much, much longer for the oil to go rancid while sitting out of rotation.
I am so blessed to have found your video feed. My mom passed and a novice cook friend washed the skillets and let them soak. Given my state of mind I didn't think but the rust had me horrified. The two skillets sat for three years. I'd bought wire wheels and was about to buy some rust always from the auto shop. Thank God I saw YOU. I'm off to get a scrubby and get to work. I'm thanking you in advance. I'll send before and after pictures. I'm subscribed to YOU. Andrea thankful for my heirlooms and how to restore them.
I inherited that EXACT dutch oven plus a smaller one. Same size and all. It was left outside by the previous owner and stored with old cooking oil in it to the point that the lid stuck to the base. This video is a godsend. Thank you so much!
That's practical all mom would cook with all my life and l like to cook with. Mom would salt her pans with a little lard on stove. It worked. I love the video people use them.
Getting ready to sell about 100 collectible cast iron skillets: Wagner Ware, Griswold...etc. They were my husband's uncle's collection. Thanks so much for your video. I wanted to find out how to treat them without doing any damage. This was really helpful.

I may just go and find our old cast iron pan in the basement that I didn’t really know how to de-rust, clean & use. I keep hearing how healthy cast iron is to cook with. Video was very well done! Thank you!
Thank you for the information. I’ve watched several videos on seasoning and restoring cast iron skillet but you actually went in to enough detail to make me realize what I was doing wrong. I used this video to save my daughters 13” Lodge that her older sister left in a sink of water.
My Dad is the best I know regarding cast iron seasoning... He 'cooks' them in REAL FIRE, and then brillos them before starting the oil seasoning process...! His regular-use pots have a near mirror finish! One more thing: He KNOWS how to use them! 😋
My husband says his mother and grandmother used to build a big fire once a year and put all their cast iron pans on it to burn off the crud before reseasoning it.
@@ramp-b.1711, yes, you can. Before turning on the oven put aluminum foil on the bottom or on the the rack below the pan, pot, skillet depending on the type of oven you have. This will catch what drips off. There are also videos on how to do it...
I'm glad I've found this video. Someone who had my house before me left quite a few cast iron cookware and full of rust and I can't wait to get to working on them
My husband just went and picked one up from an antique store close by in Taylor TEXAS. 10 bucks! Exact size as this one in the video. Can’t wait to season it!

Amazed! Amazing!!! My phone must have heard me today and placed you in my UA-cam feed. I pulled my lid (which I never use) out of the cabinet today, and said, "Goodness! How am I ever going to get all that rust off? I've never used this lid and it looks terrible." I will be doing this pot cleaning this week. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🤗

Being from the deep south I have a long relationship with cast iron cookware. This is the only video that actually made sense about restoration. See you on Facebook I want to join the group! Thank you & God Bless
Love this and thank you so much. My husband brought home what he thought was a gigantic planter from a neighbor who was getting rid of his dead mother's old junk. It is, in fact, a huge cast iron cooking pot. The kind that the old timers would put over a fire to cook huge stews or boil down cane in. God bless its heart, it is rusty like crazy because it has been left out in the weather for years! I didn't know what to do to remove all the rust that has accumulated inside and out, but, thanks to your video, I know what to try. Will do this as soon as the rain ends here because I want that precious find to be restored to all her former glory. God bless from me here in southwest Virginia...a mountain girl through and through.
You got lucky all the way around, I went looking for mine to find out my hubby used it as an oil pan draining my truck and got rid of it. Needless to say it wasn’t a quiet time for about 6 months in the house. Our son was about 3 kept saying daddy want gum gum you dum dum 😆
It's just crazy that so many people toss these cast iron pots and pans out ! I've always cleaned them like you, and put them to use again. Great informative video, thank you ! ✌️🇨🇦
May I ask if it’s white distilled vinegar or the dark type.. I’d like to try this but wanted to make sure which type of vinegar please! Thank u blessings from California 😁🙏

I have that same pot. It was just as horrible and I did a cleaning on it, awhile back, but it didn’t come out as well. Didn’t know about using vinegar. Thanks for that tip! I have lots of other cast iron pots and use some of them often. Blessed to have inherited a major collection. I even have two shapes of corn muffins pans. But, haven’t managed to clean them well enough to make the muffins come out nice. Thanks for your great video!

Wow!!! I just received some cast iron pieces from a friend that were never used and need some serious tlc. I have this exact piece that you've cleaned here and I honestly thought it may be a lost cause. So thankful I came across this video. Thanks!
Wow....what a difference made on the Dutch oven. That's amazing. I had a couple of cast iron skillets with the same amount of rust. I didn't use the method you used with the 50/50 vinegar and water, however I did use dish soap and water first along with the sos pads to clear and clean them. I managed to get all the surface rust off. I did follow everthing you did after to season the pans with the exception I turned the heat on the stove and let the pans smoke on top stove instead of the oven. Set the alarm off several times but the pans look great. 👍 I will definitely try the vinegar and water method once I locate the other cast iron in the garage. Thanks for all these fantastic tips. Can't wait to view your other and up coming videos.😄😄😄😄👏👏👏👏

I inherited my Gramma's and have never used it, simply because I have never seasoned it, (nor cleaned it; as you have proven -can be done!).... this video is a game changer!.... thank you for sharing!....
You are absolutely welcome and thank you for watching.
That is awesome! You will love them when you are finished with the restoration.
That is awesome information. If I ever get a tea kettle, I will have to try that.
I saw a site where others built a fire and threw it in. Rust does burn. It's used in thermyte.
@@castIroncookware Thank you for that information, I'll definitely do that!
I want to thank you so much for sharing how to restore cast iron Dutch pot. It was very informative.
I own several cast iron pieces. Thank you for sharing the way for me to keep my pieces for many years to come.
This was perfect - all the necessary info and no extra talk.
Great, right!
That's practical all mom would cook with all my life and l like to cook with. Mom would salt her pans with a little lard on stove. It worked. I love the video people use them.
This video was perfect for exactly the reasons you stated! I so agree with you!
Getting ready to sell about 100 collectible cast iron skillets: Wagner Ware, Griswold...etc. They were my husband's uncle's collection. Thanks so much for your video. I wanted to find out how to treat them without doing any damage. This was really helpful.
I have two Griswold skillets that I use often.
Where will you be selling them?
@Jackee Schwartz by chance, have you sold them yet? And if you have not, where will you be selling them at?
@@MzClementine I'll be selling them on my eBay store called Planet Einstein. Don't have them listed yet. Still cleaning them.
The stuff I find myself watching!!!😂😂😂 honestly super satisfied with this video the guy seems like a genuinely good person
What he said. 5 stars
Amazing... Thank you! great tip for keeping my iron pots... God Bless

Sir, thank you for educating me, imparting your knowledge.
I enjoyed how you made that
cast iron shine.
BLESSING
Beautiful! It's truly amazing what a difference the seasoning process made. I am more confident in looking for old cast iron for a discount price! These cast iron pots and pans are truly generational and to be treasured.
Indeed!
@@curtischildress9580 I have one like this(dutch oven), my Mother gave my husband, It got too heavy for her to lift off stove when full of food, I'm going to pass this down to my daughter , It is a treasure, ...Thank You~
@@toosexy7955 These old pots will last forever. Tell your daughter to keep passing it down in the family. I'm the 4th generation to actually own my pot...it came from my great grandparents.
After watching numerous videos about cast iron I came across yours thankfully. Might I say you made this an incredibly easy, informative and idiot proof experience. Love this video.
Good morning. I speak spanish, but I understood your explanation well. You speak very clear and relaxed. Now I know how to properly care for my cast iron cookware.
Thank you for the cast iron restoration lessons. My mum gave me a nice cast iron frying pan. It has a bit of rust at the bottom and I didn't know what to do. I know now because of your great video :)
I may just go and find our old cast iron pan in the basement that I didn’t really know how to de-rust, clean & use. I keep hearing how healthy cast iron is to cook with. Video was very well done! Thank you!
I did ..and this upload was a genius god sent of information on restoring cast iron
Thank you for the information. I’ve watched several videos on seasoning and restoring cast iron skillet but you actually went in to enough detail to make me realize what I was doing wrong. I used this video to save my daughters 13” Lodge that her older sister left in a sink of water.
I have watched several videos on restoring cast iron pots and you by far is the best. Thank you!
You are such a passionate man. You enjoy what you do.
Can you put them in the oven to season??
@@ramp-b.1711, yes, you can. Before turning on the oven put aluminum foil on the bottom or on the the rack below the pan, pot, skillet depending on the type of oven you have. This will catch what drips off. There are also videos on how to do it...
If you measure your shortening, and your dry ingredients , you will never have a "crud" to burn off.
I'm glad I've found this video. Someone who had my house before me left quite a few cast iron cookware and full of rust and I can't wait to get to working on them
I have one of these with some rust & can't wait to use your technique to repair it!! So glad I found your channel! Love cast iron.
I don’t even own a Dutch oven, but now I really want to find a rusty one. Awesome job bud!
Thank you so much. I hope you find one soon.
My husband just went and picked one up from an antique store close by in Taylor TEXAS. 10 bucks! Exact size as this one in the video. Can’t wait to season it!
I have the Dutch oven but never had a lid. It belonged to my grandmother. I am 67 and I never knew her. I have had it for 50 years. I have an ugly lid I use for it. It it is the only one that I have found that fit it. I love the pan. Use it all the time. Thanks for the info.
Amazed! 🤗
I’m new to restoring and you have been a great deal of wisdom! Cast iron has become my passion between the history, cooking and restoration of it. Thank you and I look foreword to many more videos!!
Thank you for this video. It's good to know that we can our cast iron when it's rusty instead of throwing it away. Carolyn
That’s probably the most gorgeous Dutch oven I had ever seen!
I recently bought a Dutch Oven and getting ready to restore and use. Great tips! Thank you so much!
Just got a few pans as a 'throw in' at an auction for other stuff. Excited to watch your other videos on cleaning up these very old, well used pans I got. So interesting what you can learn!
Indeed...👍🏾
thank you, my cousin, wasn't taught how to take care of heirloom items so I sent her this
Being from the deep south I have a long relationship with cast iron cookware.
That is awesome. So far, I have not restored at these that large yet. Hopefully I'll get the chance eventually.
That's an awesome story! Enjoy it and make lots of stew. ❤

This is a GREAT video. It hits every important point in the cleaning and seasoning process. No need to see any other video; you will learn the process entirely here, and it is as time saving as you can get!
Cast iron newbie here. I'm finding tons of this stuff at the thrift stores. Thank you for these excellent tutorials, they make caring for them easy. Best to you and yours.
You are absolutely welcome. It sounds like you have been bitten by the cast-iron bug too.
@@castIroncookware Thank You
The staining just adds character
Beautiful job.
Thank you.
I rescued a cast iron dutch oven from the scrap yard. I was never seasoned . But has some rust issues. I plain on bringing it back to life. Thank you for the video.
Thank you, this is awesome. I just followed your instructions and cleaned up a cast iron pot I found at a yard sale. Looking forward to cooking in it!
It is so rewarding being able to use a piece that you have put back in service yourself.
I have a beautiful cast iron vintage wood burner that needs to be cleaned ... thanks for sharing
My husband bought me a Dutch Oven, this is awesome, didn't know how to clean it safely, thank you for your Video 👍💕🙂
Man... I remember the waterless cookware people at the county fair always bashing cast iron when I was a kid. Because of that, I always thought cast iron was nasty. Thanks to people like yourself, I eventually bought a piece of cast iron, and that piece now takes center stage in my kitchen. I absolutely love my cast iron! Thank you so very much for this wonderful video!!!
You are absolutely welcome. Cast iron cookware has definitely stood the test of time.
I cried for weeks after realizing that i left my cast iron at my old apartment when i moved 300 miles!!
We have half a dozen cast iron skillets of various sizes in our kitchen plus a cast iron griddle. The smallest one my wife uses for cooking her eggs. For biscuits, pizza, pancakes and such I like using the griddle.
I love your videos, I got about 4cast iron pans and a Dutch oven as well. LOVE them. Best cookware ever. Thank you for teaching us how to keep these beauties looking/ working their best.🙌💯👏
I truly appreciated your teaching on seasoning. I couldn’t figure out why my my cast iron griddles would rust in certain spots!! God bless you!
I had a cast iron pan that I had for sale at an antique show. I had a lady ask me how I got the pan all black. I answered "by using it". 🤣🤣 ✌🏻❤
Truth.
I've got one of these Lodge dutch ovens I bought new over 30+ years ago that I don't think I ever used or seasoned it and it is just in the garage all rusted. Didn't know how to use cast iron before you tube! Now I've got to dig it out and get to reviving it! Thanks
Having fun
Food tastes much better cooked in cast iron. I use mine for fired eggs, omelets (I put in oven at 300). Have fun. If you have glass top stove check the warranty. Some you can't use copper or cast iron.
This is exactly what I needed to watch. I love caste iron, and I have a few. I need to learn how to de-rust the older pots and pans that I have picked up from the second hand stores. Thank you 😊 💓
WOW I would give you a kabillion likes if I could!! That was amazing and very helpful with rust issues and how much your simple yet effective way of cleaning works in the kitchen!! Thank you so much for showing and sharing!! ...and yes..I wish I had an iron Dutch oven too! I have 1 antique 8 inch skillet I use for baking 🙂👍👍❤
I am so glad I found you here. I found a bunch of old cast iron pans!
It sounds as though you have a lot of work ahead of you. You will enjoy every minute of it. You will be especially proud when your finished.
I have three ovens , Furphy 20 inch. A stew in one would feed 50 people. I never clean the outside, and I never use detergent in any of my ovens. Cheers. Doug👍👍
I really like cooking with cast iron and I have I want a dutch oven and I haven't had one for years and years but this man is the best to clean and care for this cast iron he is the best
Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate the time you took to carefully explain each step. Now I finally know how to properly clean and season my cast iron wares.
Fantastic result. I’ve got 2 Dutch ovens, one is rusty. Was never sure how to season them but after watching this I’ll try your method on the rusty one. Many many thanks.
My neighbor was putting a brand new rusty sauce pan in the trash but I rescued it! I started your method but I didn’t get all of the rust off but I got 90% off. I don’t have a scrubby but I plan to get one this weekend. I’ll have to recover my strength before I do scrubbing again lol! It has raised letters & numbers inside on the bottom so the scrubby will have to do the job!😆
I have a couple of rusted cast iron pans in my garage. I will definitely try your method for restoring them. Thanks so much.
I was so impressed. I just bought and started using my first cast iron wok. I didn't know anything about cleaning and seasoning. Thank you so much.🍳
Thank you for sharing the most gentle fast and beautiful way to clean rust off have a beutefull life
Just found the exact same Dutch oven with Lid with about the same amount of rust. .......$5 saved it from the scrap heap.
Now with your advice i will start to clean it up
I have that same pot.
You are so very welcome.
Thank you for the lesson, I own one that’s about 90 years old that certainly needs this technique because I loved using it for cooking, but just keep it as a keepsake. Will be using again, I’m so excited 😆
Thanks for this information
Thank you so very much for sharing your video. I have 3 very small iron pots, they are just for decorations. But they got real rusty. This video is so helpful. Have a Blessed day.
Absolutely the best video concerning rust removal out there!
Thank you so much. That is very encouraging and thank you for watching.
I have the same pot and use it once a week on average, i have had this pot for 41 years and it is great did not know it was a Lodge brand but tat is a great thing to learn
..... Thanks for the video
My husband love these pots and pans and skillets they’re heavy but I keep them clean for him thank you for the guidance and keeping them like new because he loves them👍😄
You are so very welcome.

Thank you, your third person I've watch. You di it perfectly. I'd rather follow you your better. God bless for being on here!🍲
Thank you so much for a very thorough and well explained process. I had great success with my old Lodge Dutch Oven I picked up at an auction following your techniques. I'm looking forward to cooking in it soon! Many, many thanks again!!!
You my man are an artist, saving a piece of history and art. Love you collection. Great job~!
Truly I could NOT believe you brought that Dutch oven back to full operation! I have soo much trouble having my cast iron pans be nonstick!
I have a Dutch oven exactly like the one you restored. Of course it has rust, and I didn't realize how easy it is to remove it.
Fabulous idea! The only ways I've ever done are harsh and tedious. Will try this next time I find a cool cast iron pan. Only thing I'd change is using gloves, the vinegar is super acidic and burns skin. 🙏🏼✌🏽
That is amazing! I just bought a cast iron pot for $3.00 at a yard sale. Wish I had bought the kettle too. I didn't buy it because it was too heavy. It was $5.00. Now I know how to restore them. Next, I need to learn how to cook in them.
Love your collection ! I have one of these Dutch ovens in my car and about to clean it up. Thank you for the great video, was very helpful.
Hey there! Something that's worked for me. I buy my wife new washcloths for stocking staffers at Christmas. Innocent and pain free 😉
Thanks Steven, this was by FAR the best video for rust removal,I LOVE old cast iron cookware,I have about 100 pieces, slowly restoring and gifting them to my kids,GOD bless, and thanks again!!
I'm sure that your kids will definitely appreciate them. Especially as they grow older.
I just used your method and it worked like a dream for removing rust from my carbon steel skillet. Just a heads up to people as well, I was able to use apple cider vinegar. I diluted it 1:1 still and it worked well.
@Deb Harris I just followed the directions in the video other than using ACV. If I remember correctly, I just scrubbed it with ACV every 5-10 minutes for about 30 minutes. It was quite obvious when I could stop as the rust just disappeared.
Acetic acid is acetic acid. Apple cider or white distilled vinegar same acid.
