Susan Smith is an American woman who was convicted of the homicide of her two sons, three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, in 1994 by drowning them in a South Carolina lake. The case gained international attention because of Smith's false claim that a black man had kidnapped her sons during a carjacking. Her defense attorneys, David Bruck and Judy Clarke, called expert witnesses to testify that she suffered from mental health issues that impaired her judgment when she committed the crimes. Smith was originally sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years' imprisonment. According to the South Carolina Department of Corrections, she will be eligible for parole on November 4, 2024.
Smith's defense psychiatrist diagnosed her with dependent personality disorder and major depression. Dependent personality disorder (DPD) is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people. Major depressive disorder (MDD), also known simply as depression, is a mental disorder characterized by at least two weeks of pervasive low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities.

I remember this one! I was watching the news with her asking for her kids return and thinking something wasn’t right…then I heard the news that she was arrested and the hairs on my arms stood up on end! Literally hair-raising for me…

This one was shocking and heartbreaking.
When this came on the news, I saw the bit where she and her estranged husband, the father of their little boys, were making an appeal to the public. They were outdoors, if I remember correctly.
Her eyes were closed and she seemed to be fake crying.
I turned to my husband and said, "She's lying! She's done something to those boys!"
But I couldn't have imagined the way it would end, what she had done to her own children. I would say it broke the hearts of everyone who heard about it.💔

Since she never says their names: They were 3-yr-old Michael Daniel Smith, and 14-month-old Alexander Tyler Smith. Susan will be eligible for parole in 2024. I don't believe she should ever re-enter society.
How the heck is that possible? She killed 2 children. People dealing drugs get more time than Susan.

Oh, and at the time of her first parole hearing, she'll be 52 years old. In the past several years, she is said to be behaving... in anticipation of her parole opportunity.... but in previous years, she has been very hard to control. She has abused drugs in prison, carried on sexually with a prison guard, and self-harmed. She very suddenly quit all that when it was mentioned to her that she probably wouldn't look too good to the parole board.
@@lego65100 she was diagnosed with depression and dpd tbf which somewhat explains those behaviours, id say the sex is more of an indictment on the guards and not her. probably shouldnt re enter society but its hard not to feel sorry for someone molested for years (to the point of developing stockholm syndrome iirc)
I don't understand how murderers aren't in for life. What we do have is a God and His judgment.
The husband is just devastated, incapacitated. He is a study in grief.

He looks totally shell-shocked, the way he should look, the way you'd think any parent whose kids' are missing, would look, but Susan looks like she's been laying on the beach sipping cocktails for a month in comparison.
@@rsmith8434 Same. I feel like, especially if he knew she was cheating, he probably knew. I just wonder how he kept himself from killing her once it all came out. I guess some of us just have better self-control than selfish narcissists like Susan have. Can you imagine the feelings he must have felt though? The feelings absolute devastation, rage and betrayal. What it must have done to him. I just want to acknowledge and recognize what a strong person it takes to endure what that man went through as a father, a husband and a human being. Such a contrast from the weakness and selfishness and cowardice susan exhibited. What she did to Michael and Alex, those precious little boys, her own babies, was beyond monstrous. To watch them through the car window as the car sunk beneath the water, seeing their little faces terrified, probably screaming, crying, begging, pleading and trying to get out, and then for her to turn and just walk away as if they were less than garbage, as if their existence, their lives, meant nothing. Dear God, it's devastating!
She wasn’t crying- she was laughing. Like a kid who can’t act to save their life.
I remember when this happened. My mom and I were in the kitchen chatting and drinking coffee. My mom looked at the television and said, “that woman did something to her children” Later on when it was announced that she did harm her children. That’s when I became aware of being able to tell someone is lying just by looking and listening. This case made me be interested in body language and true crime.
I remember this case and the first time I saw her on TV, I said she did it, she’s killed her kids. Man did I take heat from everyone. My family said, a mother wouldn’t do this to her kids and that I didn’t know, because I didn’t have kids. When it came out she was guilty I knew to never go against my intuition and I haven’t been off EVER.
EVERYONE knew she was guilty.
I feel you. This case was local for me and everyone around upstate SC rallied around the whole “small town mom that just wants her kids back” story just because people didn’t want to think this could happen in their back yards. I knew something wasn’t right about this from the rip. I wanted to give her the benefit of a doubt and believe boys were still alive but even before she went on all the morning news shows, I knew she killed her sons and did I take heat from everyone I knew because of it.
Right. I remember this and back then, this type of thing was unprecedented. Susan Smith was the Columbine of killer moms. Everything about her was off, but what that meant was just unimaginable so people defended her. Everyone claims now that they were clockin her from the start, but in reality there were alot of people who believed her. Needless to say, me being black, all it took was that ridiculous police sketch and everybody I knew was like "🤨 oh here we go..."
Some of us, are given an intuitive sense; a gene; a chemical flowing in our blood that others don’t. It’s wise to trust this part of yourself, it has carried you far, and will continue to do so. Trust it.

Susan Smith stood on the shore as the car drifted out on the river. She felt panic as the car floated, was not sinking, then her oldest son woke up. He began to call for his mother and then started to cry. This woke up the younger boy and he began to cry. She was now in total panic. The car was floating and the boys were making lots of noise. Then the drivers side of the car began to sink in the front. Her children are calling for her, obviously distressed. And she felt relief as the car began to sink. She stood and waited until the boys could no longer be heard before she left. And all she felt was release. Parole doesn't seem possible to me. I'll be waiting to see what transpires. I know her ex-husband has moved on to a new life, new wife, new kids. But he will never be released by what happened to his sons. Parole cannot be an option. Not then. Not ever.
I’m hoping he’s there to make sure she never gets out.

I had young kids when this happened and knew the first time she did an interview that she was guilty because of one simple thing. She’d done her hair and makeup. You don’t have much time to do that at all with little ones that age to begin with. When 2 are gone, you wouldn’t eat, sleep or even think of how you looked. Makeup, hairspray and big bow around your ponytail - not a chance!

I remember a friend come to me with a mangled mess on the back of her head, we untangle it 😖 for hours, she was emarrased but knew being a mother of two id understand exactly how she let it get that bad. 1st her son had been unwell ....then was in hospital ...then she was nursing all his needs at home, shed spent a week scrapping it back to wash her face and spraticly adding kirbygrips to keep it of her face! MY POINT it took her over a week to remember she even had hair, and of course none of us even noticed how she looked till way after the fact once the baby was back to himself.
I prefer the new format, with written introductions underneath each member of the panel, while you guys immediately dive into the content. It's more effective too.

I remember this terrible crime and as soon as it was on the news, my husband looked at me and said, “she did something to her kids, you would never let someone take our kids”. “No mother would let that happen”. Horrible, horrible act. 💔💔💔💔💔
I vividly remember this when it happened. I remember from the very beginning thinking she was guilty because the “perpetrator “ would have to leave my dead body on the side of the road to take my children. And then….no tears when she was “crying “! Ugh! Any mother saw straight through that!
Thank you! That's exactly it! She had to let him take the kids because he had a gun? Any normal mother would either jump in front of the gun, wrestle it out of his hand, etc. I'd be injured, bleeding and no longer to stand if the police found someone had taken my children.
I lived in Spartanburg when this happened. My mother knew Susan did it without ever seeing speak. She said there was no way a mother got out of her car without her children and let them drive away. She said the fact that she is alive and unharmed means she was involved.
Her fake-crying sounds so much like laughing 😩.

I know someone who works in the prison where she is currently housed. They said she is a piece of work even to this day. She is always stirring up crap with other inmates and officers. I wish I could share more but I don't want to put my friend's job in jeopardy. Bottom line is she is thriving in prison and would be a huge risk to society.

Just my two cents.... Steve Harvey did a bit about her once. The one thing that stands out to me is when he said that she didn't have any cuts, scratches or bruises, and that "you can't take a real mother's kids and they wouldn't be any evidence" of a fight.
The term "mama bear" exists for a reason. Even mothers of a different species will fight for the safety of her children.
I've been looking forward to this. I will never forget when this happened because my two boys were almost exactly the same age at the time as hers and I found myself emotionally connected in a way that wasn't healthy for me. I believed her UNTIL the very moment she wiped her hair out of face! Instead of tears that should have been there but weren't. How was she even talking when I could barely breath? When Chase you said you had a redflag because of her hair grooming I almost spit out my coffee. I pointed that out to everyone who would listen to me. Thank you all for your time on this one. Its so important the work and the gifts you all share to help us get to the truth.

I remember when this happened. It came in the news, and within a minute or less, every single person in the room said, "she did it." I've never seen anyone MORE obvious.
I remember this so specifically. I knew she was lying right away. I hadn’t had my own children yet, but I would have cried for the children I baby-sat, let alone my own. This was huge at the time, and everyone knew she was guilty. Broke every woman’s heart.
The reason she said it's a tragedy is because she knows the outcome. A person who doesn't know where their children are, you wouldn't call it a tragedy because you're hoping for a happy ending.
I thought the same thing.
Think she said tragedy because it’s a tragedy for her that she’s still being grilled and won’t get away with it.
She looks and sounds like she feels hopeless because rather than the freedom she was after she has imprisoned herself to relentless attention and focus on the kids and is getting tired of the act.
I remember when this happened and how shocking it was. At that point I was pregnant with my first child. I had two little boys close together just as she had. My first born died in 2016, and Susan Smith is even more shocking to me now. Being a mother who has lost a son, it really jumped out at me when she prematurely called it a "tragedy.". I know first hand how a mother hangs onto hope as long as she possibly can.

I’m glad you mentioned the line in the second video where she said, “you’ve got to take care of each other”. That really struck me - who tells a baby and a toddler to take care of each other? They’re too young to even be able to take care of THEMSELVES, let alone others. That statement really stood out to me. I remember when this case was in the news - I was a kid myself, then, and couldn’t imagine a mom doing that to her children. 😢

I was 22 when this happened. I had no kids, didn't especially enjoy being around kids, and at that point would've been perfectly happy never having kids. I had absolutely no concept of how it felt to be a parent. But from the first moment I saw her and heard her, I kept thinking to myself "that's not how a mother would react".

I have never physically hated someone as much as her and Casey Anthony. I literally get sick at my stomach listening to their lies. Blaming their actions on being molested as a child is insulting. I'm sure I'm gonna make someone mad by saying this but I don't care if you was molested it does not give you the right to kill your children. Their father would have happily taken care of them. One of the saddest things I have heard is that the boys were holding hands when they were found.
I completely agree. There are many who suffer horrific abuse that would never hurt a child and I hate when they use that as a justification. Especially women like her or Anthony that lie about abuse to use as an excuse.
I'll never forget when this happened. I will never understand something so horrendous.
My daughter was a toddler when this happened. If someone with a gun tried to take her, it would have been on. A mother will fight to the death to protect her babies.

I live in SC. Michael went to day care with the daughter of my friend of 38 years. Michael came to the birthday party of my friend's child in Union SC. I was there. Susan dropped Michael off and when returned she did not interact with any children or adults. Michael was having a great time. When this tragedy hit the town and the news it was incomprehensible but so many people noticed her lack of grief. We couldn't tell my friend's little girl until she was old enough to understand because she loved Michael so much. Also a psychologist friend was the professional asked to be a part of the prosecution team. He said her guilt was so immediately noticed. I hope she doesn't get to leave what should be her forever house.
My husband lost our 4 year old granddaughter in Walmart and I about lost it. But I went to an employee with her picture on my phone and said my husband lost my granddaughter, gave her name what she was wearing. I was totally panicking but gave them all the information so they could lock down the store and help find her. They found her a few minutes later but I would have waited to die if anything had happened to her. She's my heart! It took me awhile to calm down from that.

I think I snorted a bit because that reminded me that up in the hills of Tennessee where I was raised, the old timers would say, "Well, I wouldn't say he's a chicken, but he sure does have hen house ways."

Nancy, the scrapwhisperer's wife here. I see a different scenario between Susan Smith and her husband. When they are interviewed together I do not believe he is holding her hand. I believe that she is holding his hand. His hand is in her lap because SHE wants it there or put it there. She needs him to believe her. They are an estranged couple knowing things about each other that the public doesn't know.
I think he desperately wants to leave her side but is cooperating for the sake of his children. His children are gone but no one asks him how he feels or how he is doing. All the attention is on his wife. When they first were interviewed as a couple, I could not take my eyes off him. His glare and stillness commanded so much attention. As he sat there stiffly, I senced sorrow but mostly intense anger. I felt he knew things and was holding them in. His body is not leaning into her but is faced straight ahead towards the camera or interviewer. He barely even responds to anything she says. There is no comforting. He is angry and I think he is angry with Susan.
They were seperated when this happened and he was by her side because he wanted to find his kids. Her family was just awful to him during all of this time.
Guys, she didn't mean "normality", she meant to say "formality". She was thinking "act normal" while trying to talk and combined the 2 terms. I remember this case and the first interview with her I was screaming at my TV "she did it!!" (I wasn't even on the panel then) : )
Those kids suffered and suffered and suffered and suffered! They were at an angle such as to be staring down into the gathering water. They stared at their death for like 45 minutes before the water actually started covering their faces. This person is one of the evilest people I think I've ever seen in my life.

As I was watching this and heard/saw her say "It's a tragedy", I winced and drew back. I was dumbfounded to hear her say that.
I know NOTHING about body language but remember this case very well. On watching her first public statement I turned to my husband and said, "did you SEE that? She did it. I've never seen a more fake cry or uncaring mother." Even a blind man could have seen it.
Good for you. I watched in disbelief that any mother could murder & lie, but intrinsically something didn’t feel right either.

I was looking at the husband while she was talking. He looked like he was looking into hell and had been for a while. I actually saw him comeback with a kind of jerk from wherever he was. He looks like he was off wondering if she killed them.
A normal mother wouldn't cave to a gun or anything. A normal mother defends her children like a tiger.
You're exactly right. A normal mother would take a bullet for her children. She would take any form of violence against her or her children to save them. Literally laying down her life for her children. This thing is subhuman and if she was ever human she left her Humanity behind decades ago. There are no words...

I lived in SC when this happened and I remember thinking that she seemed like she was faking and not even NEAR as lost, frantic and heartbroken as I would have felt had my children been kidnapped. I would have been out for blood! She was just way too calm. Her poor husband was devastated and it showed. He cried real tears. It was so horrible.
Her fake crying in the first clip was absurd. No one on earth bought that.
I saw this when it happened. At the time, I felt she was holding back a smile, even hiding a laugh behind a fake cry. Seeing it all these years later, I completely feel the same way.

I lost my cat's medicine briefly yesterday . I couldn't believe I had lost it, and went over every room fairly swiftly . There was fear for my cat's big discomfort, and unnerving shame and guilt at myself, at the possibility having to admit to my vet I needed a refill already due to my stupidity, and also an odd fear that a family member would stop in and witness my bad furry parenting . I was almost shaking looking for this cat medicine, I was worried, sad, mad at myself, ashamed, shaky, a little paranoid..and then I found it under a blanket on the couch .
Just as a point of comparison, seeing Susan Smith not losing her marbles over her abducted children was a real eye opener .
But I see what Chase said about dissociative people who have had rough childhoods regarding that she doesn't seem to be all over the place .

I remember watching this story in the news with a friend who called it right off the bat. She said you don’t have your children missing and go on national tv with your hair and makeup looking perfect.
I would be more anxious and stressed if my dog was missing…
I will never forget this, I had two kids very close in age at the time and this really broke my heart 😭
I remember this case too. Blew me away that any mother would kill her kids because her boyfriend didn’t want kids. I raised three kids and would still die to protect them. My grandkids too. Those precious babies who were loved by the father. Why not let him raise them and walk away?
Men I can tell you exactly what happened to me when I lost my little 4 year old son at the mall for 25-30 minutes.
I was 8 months pregnant with my 3rd and my two year old daughter was in the stroller. My son was complaining because I made him hold on to the stroller so I told him he could let go for a minute as we passed the stairs. He was going to walk to the right of the stairs and I would walk to the left and we would meet right after we passed the stairs but he wasn't there I looked all over than I went to the second floor and looked in the book store that we always went to, he wasn't there... I went back down stairs and he wasn't there I walked in a store and told the cashier I lost my son... I entered hell...the next thing I remember was sitting on a bench in the mall surrounded by police and I looked up to the right because I heard a familiar voice and there was my husband who worked 20away from the mall. I don't remember talking to the police or anything I was in a place way beyond tears. As I looked up at my husband to the right of him I noticed something moving going up and down I looked and it was my son skipping with a big smile on his face when he saw his father he said hi daddy. I don't remember driving home or anything it was the most horrible half hour of my life.

Every time she does her fake cry you can see her start to laugh. So bizarre.
Same thing in the video starting around 53:00. Every time the husband blinks, which happens a bunch this time, it’s right after she says something that sounds like BS. Consistently.
That poor husband- it appears with each video he’s putting all the pieces together.
I remember this because they showed how long the babies were in the car before it filled up with water and they drowned. It was several minutes. It was traumatizing to see that video reenactment. Those poor, poor babies. I never understood why she didn't just give them to their Dad if her new boyfriend didn't like kids.
The "boyfriend" didn't want her either. She was just a side piece to him. He was wealthy "high society" and she was poor and from the wrong side of the tracks. He explained how they'd never work out and wished her to move on in the same letter where he said he did not want the children. So he had dumped her before she killed her kids, hence she knew already there was no future with him.

The very first thing I noticed about Susan Smith and felt it was incredibly obvious in the first two videos is that she's smiling. In the second she's actually trying to hold back a laugh.
When I saw the interviews with the guy in Colorado who murdered his pregnant wife and put his two little girls in oil tanks I saw that same smirk. That same sinister smile and the first thing I thought was he reminds me of Susan Smith.

Yes i do remember her blaming a black man and I also remember the composite sketch. I also remember that she had the sympathy of most of the country at the time. I also remember David Smith apologized to the black community afterward which showed a lot of class.
I think there’s something in the dad’s eyes; as if he’s putting it together in the midst of this interview. I remember watching the news when this happened and even my naive, 20 year old self seemed to be creeped out by her flat, blasé attitude during the whole search and rescue part. When I had kids, I lost my youngest in the Winn Dixie parking lot for 20 seconds and damn near lost my sh!t!! Thanks, gentlemen, for such interesting and educational videos.
I hear ya. Lost my 4 year old in Wal mart once for about that same length of time (she liked to play hide & seek in the clothes racks). I nearly had a heart attack!

This moment in time was the first time I ever saw my dad outraged. I remember him yelling at the TV she deserves the same. "Put her in a car". "She needs to suffer as her children did".
I saw a documentary where they took the same make and model of her car, same conditions,weight etc. and let it sink. It might have actually been the detectives or state attorneys to determine just what those little boys endured to show for evidence. Anyway, the length of time it took that car to fully sink seemed like an eternity and to try and fathom just what terror they must of felt is almost too overwhelming for me!! She’s a monster!! All for a man she was obsessed with and a man that stated he never even entertained the thought of being with her !! It still so unimaginable what she did !! I read another post from a woman stating she herself served time with her and she said she’s treated like some kind of rockstar there !!!
Why do people who commit these heinous crimes even try to fake cry? It's so glaringly obvious they aren't sincere tears of fear and grief.
My husband was working at that police station at the time of her original statement. They knew immediately she was lying and where the car was. Every moment of that search was designed to pull the truth from her.

I remember when this happened. My housemates and I were watching this, and we all knew straightaway that Susan was lying. We could tell intuitively and pick out behavioral cues, but to listen to the analysis is fascinating.
Those poor babies! Hard to believe she is eligible for parole in 24.
When I was a young Mother and this PERSON killed her babies.....I saw these news clips.....I REMEMBER when she said, "I didn't sleep very well last night."..I screamed

Just watched this again and it reminded me at the time that this happened, she always had her hair freshly done with big bows . No mother would worry about her hair in a tragedy.

I caught bits and pieces of it. I thought she was just young and scared, until she said the baby had just told her he loved her. At his age, he probably wasn't putting words together, so when I heard that, I knew. I was sick over it, but I knew.

When that happened I knew she was lying from day one.I'm a mom and I would die at the hands of the "kidnapper" before leaving my children. There was no way I believed her. No loving mother would give up her children to anyone. I knew she was lying and people argued with me saying you don't know what you'd do...yes I do. I'd either get away with my kids or be found dead with them.
I remember when this happened as well and same...no way was she telling the truth. Unbelievable.
When this happened years ago, I knew INSTANTLY she was lying, why, because I’m a mother that would be inconsolable if this happened to my child!
My mom, at the time, said she was lying. Why? “She closes her eyes can’t she can’t stand to look at what she did.”

I remember when they pulled the car out of the lake. Both those sweet babies strapped into their car seats. I was horrified how any mother could do this to her children. Imagining their terror as they drowned. I hope the families have found some sort of peace. RIP to two little boys for whom a nation grieved.

I saw the second clip at work with several coworkers. When it was over, I stated out loud that she did something to those kids. My one coworker told me what a horrible person I was for saying that. I had 2 kids and coworker none. I told her that she looked too good. She went out of her way to look good for the camera. If someone had try to take my kids, I would’ve been bruised, have scrapes and face red and swollen from crying. She did not even have a broken nail. No mother would be that calm and put together at that time. My coworker apologized when it came out that she did it.
