    Hey! I am watching all of your videos one by one atm. I really ike your video style and already have learned a lot about arcade sticks. As I am a huge NES enthusiast I would reeeeeeally love to see a video dedicated to the popular kind of simple arcade sticks which came out for NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis and so on. Maybe a comparison, a mod or just a close look from someone with arcade stick experience. Just a thought... ;-)

    This is really neat! I elected to use a third-party 6 button Genesis controller and soldered a 20 pin harness directly to the pads. When I feel like playing Genesis I just plug it into my retro Brooks board and go. It's a little bit more hassle but in exchange I can use it on my Atari 2600 as well.

    I totally agree best way to play the excellent shmups library of PCE and MD/Genesis is with arcade sticks. I use one of your featured legendary sticks (Konami Hyperstick) with Tototek so I'm wondering why you dissing it? Personally, I think it works really well. How would you rather have the buttons configured or mapped differently? Also, it'd be great if you could compare objectively the latency of the two adapters using test suite to see which performs better.

    • @ScanlineCity
      @ScanlineCity  5 років тому +1

      Honestly, I don’t mean to dis it. It does work decent for the most part and its cheap. And in the case of SHMUPS you typically only need 2-3 buttons, so layout does not matter as much. I do wish it had the traditional 6 button street fighter layout such as the Brook Duo here where Cross=A, Circle=B, R1=C, Square=X. Triagle=Y, and R2=Z. However, I completely understand why each adaptor did what they did including the brook 3 button layout - because they are better layouts for modern gamepads with 4 face buttons. When you think about an original genesis pad - its really the same 6 button layout as an arcade stick. That’s why you can’t go wrong with the traditional street fighter layout - you will never find yourself with a badly designed button map. As I mentioned in the video though I hope Brook gives us a layout where the ABC are mapped to the square, Triangle and R1 since most games are in fact only 3 buttons. If you love the Tototek, keep using it dude!

    The only fault is that you can't use an Edladdin Seagull 78 or a RetroGameBoyz Gen2A52 with this Brook Adapter connected to your fight stick. You still need a padhacked Genesis OCB to access those.

    How do you feel about HitBox and the rise in popularity it has? Apparently Daigo Umehara has moved to HitBox as his main controller. Does this make normal fightsticks obsolete? Like the Hori VLX?

    • @ScanlineCity
      @ScanlineCity  5 років тому +2

      Well that’s certainly an interesting question as it really depends on why you play these kinds of games in the first place. For many people it’s all about winning, be it online or in tournaments. For me it’s all about fun and nostalgia…getting together with friends and feeling like your 8 years old again in the arcade. For me nothing will ever replace arcade sticks because that’s what everyone including myself played on in the glory days. If performance and winning is all that matters then perhaps hitbox will be the way to go as they progress. It’s similar to the emulation vs real hardware argument. In many cases you can make the argument that emulation is superior on paper, such as resolution and more recently latency reduction. However, I always prefer real hardware because it always gives me a stronger sense of nostalgia and is consequently MORE FUN.

      @@ScanlineCity a bit late, sorry, but none of those pcbs will ever support the Sega Genesis or Master system since the input protocol for those systems is an "evolution" (more like a hack) of the old atari input protocol which consists in thinkering with the logic of he multiplexer IC found in the Genesis pads.
      What I have done to add Megadrive support to my cthulus is to add a 74HC157's in line of the data/clock/V+ signals activated by an on/off switch so I can switch back and fort between multiplexed and well,.... non multiplexed IO...
