I'm still super sick so I whipped up this marathon of great TG16 games in the meantime. I'll get back to my usual stuff hopefully as soon as this weekend.
Damn, Riggs, I hope you get better, man.
I can't wait until you talk about AEW: Fight Forever since you and I are both fans of old-school wrestling games.
@@kenterminateddq5311 I'll have my video up as soon as I'm allowed to post it public ;)
Bonk 3 was absolutely released as a HuCard in both North America and Japan. There was also a CD version, but it’s mostly the same other than the soundtrack and some extra multiplayer minigame modes.
I’ve got just one thing to say: I frickin’ love Bonk. Something about the whacky graphics, chill OST, and that head flutter move. It’s just dope.
This is great! I'm prepping for the Analogue Duo and I've been trying to slowly expand my collection. Plenty of titles here that are new to me, thanks!
If Legendary Axe is a hidden gem, EVERY good game on TG16 is a hidden gem!
TurboGrafx-16 and me go way back to its release and frustrations two years later when new game releases barely trickled in. The Legendary Axe or R-Type should have been pack in for sure. Vasteel is my absolute favorite game mostly vs a friend. Also love Bomberman 93, Military Madness, Beyond Shadowgate, Gate of Thunder & Air Zonk
I still wanna get the Turbo-Grafx Mini.
The OG Turbo-Grafx was such an underrated console of the 90s.
@@kenterminateddq5311 Yeah I have them, the TurboDuo (CD games are region free!) & PC Engine. Too bad NEC didn’t know what they were doing in North America as hundreds of fantastic PC Engine games left stuck in Japan never to be ported to NA.
Military Madness will always be number one for me . The satisfaction of watching your squad of Charlies obliterate a full unit of Hunters due to perfectly executing the surround and support mechanic is one of the most greatest feelings in all of retro gaming
Discovering this system through the TurboGrafx Mini a few years back was such a joy. Great selection of games here.
Order of the Griffin. One of my all time faves.
I beat that. It's a hidden Goldbox game. Great fun! Had to hand map all the levels.
Can't remember the name after all these years, but there was some kind of rpg racing game i had as a kid that i loved. Never could beat the last boss but the game was really cool. You'd go in this dragon warrior style over world, find towns, race in the local track to unlock better parts.
Really cool game
TG16 was all about those Silent Debuggers and Military Madness.
I'm surprise you didn't mention Ninja Spirit. That game was incredible!
Bonk 3 came out on both CD and Chip. The chip version has more animation.
The Legendary Axe games WERE actually two completely different games in Japan. They only named the second one that here in the US. (maybe Europe too) I love both games, but they're not the same franchise.
Yeah it was released as Dark Legend in Japan...should've just kept that name here.
TG16 / PCE is an awesome system. So many great games for it. A lot of them never came out in the US but all of them are easily playable today.
Hope you feel better soon, John.
Fun Fact: They didn't really want to do a mascot character for the TurboGrafx 16 like Nintendo did with Mario and Sega with Sonic the Hedgehog. He kinda became the mascot in America by default because at the time the American consumer was used to a console having a mascot, and was more or less expecting there to be one.
Keith courage and Air zonk were the 2 games i played as a kid. I have fond memories of both.
I’m happy you are showing love for the turbo Grafx not many played that the Neo geo or the 3DO during the 80s and 90s since the world was all about Nintendo Sega and Sony I was blessed to have them and see all of gaming from 1980 to Now thank you John Riggs for all you do
Man I wish I had the money back in the day to buy the Turbo Duo but I was already buying games for NES, SNES, Master System and Genesis. And I was studying and working. Good reviews and cool video John!👉😃👈
You're the one who introduced me to Chew Man Fu. Such an awesome game, one of my favorites on the system. Love the TG16. Stoked out of my mind waiting for Analogue's new Duo console to ship!
I discovered some of these when I got my Coregrafx Mini two Christmases ago, and that device might be the best gaming purchase I’ve made over the last few years. It legit made me wish I had taken the TG16 plunge back in the day. Neutopia, Dungeon Explorer, Blazing Lazers, Alien Crush, Chew Man Fu…Lords of Thunder is now my favorite shmup ever, and I had never even heard of it a few years back.
Great video mate 👍🏾
I don't have very much experience with this platform; so this video is good for that. One game a roommate and I played on another roommate's system was Moto Roader. It is surprisingly addictive.
There are both CD and HuCard versions of Bonk 3
TurboGrafx, Yes Sir!
I loved the turbographx-16, had it when I was 9. Had Blazing lasers, Keith Courage (half the game wasnt so bad) Chu man fu, R-type, Victory run. I wish I had taken better care of it.
I just got a turbo 16 and its amazing i cant believe i never played one before
Bonk 3 was on Hu Card too not just Turbo CD
I don't know how to say this without sounding like I'm "bashing" you, this is a great video, John, and I wish it had timecodes :)
Growing up Neutopia, keith Courage, and World Court Tennis were my favorite games for TG16 games. Just to focus on one, World Court Tennis was an RPG Final Fantasy type game where the battles were Tennis matches. Fantastic system. I still have my original and the mini console.
john, love your videos, greetings from argentina, do you play on Original hardware?
Tiger Road is a great game, I have it on the Switch. It's part of the second Capcom Arcade collection. I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it.
Devil's Crush - In Japan, the symbol on the top screen WAS a pentagram. They changed it for the international releases to avoid offending sensitive westerners. This also came out for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. And there was a Genesis-only sequel called Dragon's Revenge. Personally, I don't think it's as good though.
Blazing Lasers - Ironically, I think there are TOO MANY powerups. Not the variety of them, but how many come up on the screen. Once you get the powerups you want, it actually becomes a chore trying to keep them, because it's so hard to avoid hitting another powerup by accident.
Sad to not see Splatterhouse on the list iknow its not a HIDDEN gem but feel it belongs on any TurboGrafx list
You play as a slinky? It looks like the little green and purple Slinky things on Marble Madness
Man. I played a lot of Alien crush on my turboExpress. I had my TurboGrafx mini hooked up for a while, specifically to play alien crush. I recently discovered that A) you can still buy games on the ps3 store and B) that Alien Crush was available. So that’s where I play my turbo Grafx pinball, now.
Meanwhile, what kind of a tg-16 list doesn’t have the criminally underrated TaleSpin? The TG version is by far the best. Strangely, the TG version of Darkwing…
Ehh…
Ninja Spirit, Bonk 3, Chew-Man-Fu, Pac-Land and Paradol Stars were my favorites released on the system. I honestly never heard of Cratermaze until last year. Probably an unofficial sequel to Heiankyo Alien.
Oh! And Tricky Kick. Fantastic puzzle game.
I picked up Bloody Wolf a few years ago at a game shop next to a Tattoo place called "Bloody Wolf"
I had and played almost all of these amazing games. Only a couple I missed while we had our system.
My cousin was going to give me his Sega Master System and TurboGrax 16 , like 30 years ago, but I didn't feel right about it. I can't say I regret it even though the TurboGrax 16 is super expensive now, but I just enjoyed hanging out with my cousin. I never get to see him anymore because he has kids now.
I've never played a TurboGrafx console, i feel i have missed out on so many great games. Gonna price up one or purchase the mini me thinks. Great content as always John.👍🏻
I was a SNES fan boy but I loved my TurboDuo. I sank way too much time in Ninja Spirit, Ys, Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder. Also an impressive port of Street Fighter II if you were willing to go through the hassles of importing.
Pretty cool. An underrated console.
You can jump with the motorcycle in Bloody Wolf, that alone makes it awesome.
The quest mode in Final Lap Twin is my favorite TG16 game of all time. Its a cross between Zelda and Pole Position.
Military Madness was mine and my buddies top TG16 game...it....was.....awesome...lol...Slow as hell...but IDK something so fun
That was my favorite too . Nothing beats the feeling of obliterating the entire unit of a more powerful enemy through skillful use of the surround and support mechanic . Just 👌🏻 chef’s kiss
Solid s stuff John thanks displaying some games that are on the mini that aren’t… and emulation now a days is probably the way to go and add these roms to those minis is so easy nowadays… keep it up
Tiger Road arcade is indeed the game of games man. It’s so good!
This is crazy.. I've never even heard of most of these games :)
I loved Bravoman!
"Bravo"
Hello, I've been watching your show for quite a long time and enjoy all your episodes. And are you trips that you go to the game store? My question is is there any way to port PC engine games on to the sega Genesis?
If I remember correctly Bonk was supposed to be the very distant ancestor of Zonk.
When I had this system everyone wanted to play Splatterhouse.
I would play the heck out of a Unicorn Crush pinball game
Crater Maze is a great chill game.
That pinball game looks like a cross between Contra, Life Force, and pinball.
The best thing about Download is the profane Engrish. The worst thing about Download is how difficult it is to find info about it on the Internet, because of the name.
The "Monsters" in Alien Crush look like the aliens from Contra.
Hidden gems > Keith Courage, Bonk....looking forward to the master system hidden gems like Alex Kidd in miracle world, or that lesser known Game boy hidden gem Tetris 😂
And that Zelda game they remade to be a hidden gem on Switch too. Can't forget that one.
I own this console but I’m not going to play on it ever again nothing was a big deal the graphics were 16 bits it’s time to move on enjoy the PS5 Xbox series X Nintendo Switch PC
Well I wish I could play these Turbo graphic 16 games without emulation
There's almost no difference unless you use a crt. With emulation you can even have less input lag!
My favourite emulation is Powkiddy x39 pro so I get ya it is awesome but you can't really play Turbographic 16 games
In another time-line we're playing slinky eternal as slinky guy getting to erase off brand toys nobody wanted as gifts and decided to take out their pain from rejection on all the kids who tossed them to the side and never played with all because they didn't have movable limbs nor any projectiles for guns.
All this takes place in a world made from mega blocks since the Legos weren't lying in the junk bin.
In your opinion is Bonk's Adventure better on Turbo-Grafx16 or NES? It seems that Bonk's Revenge and Air Zonk are only on Turbo Gafx16. So to play those games it seems like the Turbo system is a system to get.
I haven't played Download yet but Soldier Blade is my pick for best shooter on TG-16.
No love for Veigues Tactical Gladiator, Psychosis or Samurai Ghost?
i heard that legendary axe 1 and 2 were not included with the TG16 mini konami put out because the dev, victor musical industries, wanted nothing to do with their own game. how crazy is that?! it won awards in EGM magazine back then, it was GOTY! it was sorely missed on the tg16 mini. while legendary axe 2 is.. weird.. it has excellent music for sure. the supergrafx had some awesome arcade ports. a few are actually on the tg16 mini. the tg16 was a very capable system back then, too bad it didnt last. it didnt have much 3rd party support in the way of major devs like capcom and konami for example.
Hope you are feeling better.
Almost every PC Engine game is worth a gem, even duckwing duck that was on the AVGN.
A lot of these games had good graphics for the 80s.
Wonder if Riggs preordered a analog duo??
Keith courage was a pack in game. Not exactly a hidden gem.
Nice list.
This console deserved a controller with more buttons. That was a major flaw... Also, its cpu can put on screen 482 different colors simultaniacely... more than the snes and much more than genesis... but you can't notice that on the games 🤔
Nobody talks about the big twist in the middle of Bloody Wolf. Whatsupwitdat?
Shockman just came to Nintendo switch. they need to put some more tg-16 games on there!
Keith Courage reminds me of NES Xanax.
Wish they had western style games maybe somebody will start making them. Like to see Robocop, Batman and Big Bang Pro Wrestling playing on the TurboGrafx16.
Again, there is no "n" in the word "turret"...
My favorite Turbografx 16 game goes to Soldier Blade greatest game released on the system
lol I like how half the games were shoot em ups
Best video!
Pc engine and turbo grafx was the coolest console of its time
I own Splatterhouse
Somer Assault should have been called Slinky Assault.
There is a Gekibo 2 for the PlayStation 2 :D
Splatterhouse? Ninja Spirit?
can you play japan tg16 games on the American tg16 console ?
You have to get an adapter. The cards pins are offset but are not region coded.
Cratermaze alone is reason enough not to get that fugly chunk of black plastic called Turbo Grafx 16. Get the white PC Engine, nothing else. It is cheaper, looks cooler, and has nice looking HuCards instead of lame text-only designs. Cratermaze on the PC Engine is Doraemon! Yes, you see that right, it is a ROBOT-CAT! The music is much cooler too. Second reason YOU MUST get a PC Engine, is Final Soldier, the best of the Soldier series that never came out on TG16.
Good TG16 game? That's easy. Ninja Spirit.
Are the Bonk games really 'Hidden Gems'? I never owned a TG-16 but I knew who Bonk was.
Really wish Nintendo would strike a deal with Konami and put these games on the Switch Online!
everyone knows devil crush bro.
post-apocalyptic= post atomic horror
I have no opinion on the TurboGrafx-16
Check out the Underrated games on Genesis, Master System and even the SG-1000 ua-cam.com/video/QBqfy3urG1s/v-deo.html
